We present a numerical method that incorporates particle sticking in simulations using the N-body code pkdgrav to study motions in a local rotating frame, such as a patch of a planetary ring. Particles stick to form non-deformable but breakable aggregates that obey the (Eulerian) equations of rigid-body motion. Applications include local simulations of planetary ring dynamics and planet formation, which typically feature hundreds of thousands or more colliding bodies. Bonding and breaking thresholds are tunable parameters that can approximately mimic, for example, van der Waals forces or interlocking of surface frost layers. The bonding and breaking model does not incorporate a rigorous treatment of internal fracture; rather the method serves as motivation for first-order investigation of how semi-rigid bonding affects the evolution of particle assemblies in high-density environments.We apply the method to Saturn’s A ring, for which laboratory experiments suggest that interpenetration of thin, frost-coated surface layers may lead to weak cohesive bonding. These experiments show that frost-coated icy bodies can bond at the low impact speeds characteristic of the rings. Our investigation is further motivated by recent simulations that suggest a very low coefficient of restitution is needed to explain the amplitude of the azimuthal brightness asymmetry in Saturn’s A ring, and the hypothesis that fine structure in Saturn’s B ring may in part be caused by large-scale cohesion.This work presents the full implementation of our model in pkdgrav, as well as results from initial tests with a limited set of parameters explored. We find a combination of parameters that yields aggregate size distribution and maximum radius values in agreement with Voyager data for ring particles in Saturn’s outer A ring. We also find that the bonding and breaking parameters define two strength regimes in which fragmentation is dominated either by collisions or other stresses, such as tides. We conclude our study with a discussion of future applications of and refinements to our model.  相似文献

 Land-use changes on the Sheyenne Delta in southeastern North Dakota, USA, have prompted research on impacts to the unconfined Sheyenne Delta aquifer (SDA). This study examines effects of the saline discharge of a flowing artesian well that taps the Dakota aquifer (DAK) on SDA groundwater chemistry and soil salinity. Objectives were to map the saline plume in the SDA using induction techniques, to assess chloride migration in the SDA, and to evaluate induction sensitivity to moderately saline sands. Induction data, collected in a 2.9-ha grid, were compared to 31 soil profiles analyzed for gravimetric moisture, electrical conductivity, and chloride. Soil salinization is widespread, but only 7% of the area meets the 4-dS/m threshold for saline soils. SDA chloride distribution was determined on transects oriented with and perpendicular to the flow path determined from induction readings. Chloride was detected in the aquifer 550 m from the source, indicating a transport rate of 21 m/yr. Complex recharge and discharge patterns and hummocky relief contribute to a wide chloride plume at this site. A mass balance based on soil-water content and chloride concentration shows that only 4% of the chloride from the DAK well remains in the grid volume. Co-management between local communities and government agencies is promoted as a strategy to improve fisheries management. This paper considers the potential for co-management of sea turtle fisheries within four UK Overseas Territories (OTs) in the Caribbean, and for co-ordinated management among those territories. We focus on fisher incentives for engaging in co-management and on the potential to scale up co-management to a regional level. This paper presents data from Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, and Turks and Caicos Islands, where 110 turtle fishers participated in a socio-economic survey undertaken as part of the ‘Turtles in the UK Overseas Territories in the Caribbean’ project. Based on three established criteria for co-management (perceived crisis in stock, willingness to participate and community cohesion), results suggest that fisher support for co-management exists within each OT, but the extent of support for and views of specific management interventions varies among OTs. The implications of results for co-management in each territory, and for establishing co-ordinated management regimes in the region, are discussed in the context of current debates about the nature of resources and scalar (mis)matches between resource and management regimes.  相似文献

Recent global warming caused by humans and the prediction of a reduced Atlantic Ocean meridional overturning circulation in the future has increased interest in the role of the overturning circulation in climate change. A schematic diagram of the overturning circulation called the “Great Ocean Conveyor Belt,” published by Wallace Broecker in 1987, has become a popular image that emphasizes the inter-connected ocean circulation and the northward flux of heat in the Atlantic. This seems a good time to review the development of the conveyor belt concept and summarize the history of overturning circulation schematics.In the 19th century it was thought that symmetric overturning circulation cells were located on either side of the equator in the Atlantic. As new hydrographic measurements were obtained, circulation schematics in the early 20th century began to show the inter-hemispheric overturning circulation in the Atlantic. In the second half of the 20th century schematics showed the global ocean overturning circulation including connections between the Atlantic and the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Some recent schematics of the overturning circulation show its complexities, but as more information is included these schematics have also become complex and not as easy to understand as the simple Broecker 1987 version. However, these complex schematics, especially the quantitative ones, represent valuable syntheses of our developing knowledge of the overturning circulation.  相似文献

The properties of energetic (65–95 keV) cometary water-group ions in the extended solar wind pick-up region surrounding comet Giacobini-Zinner are examined using data from the EPAS instrument on the ICE spacecraft. In the outer part of this region, extending from cometocentric distances of several hundred thousand to a few million kilometres (the limit of pick-up ion detectability), it is found that large modulations of the ion flux occur (with JMAX/JMIN 102-103) which are related to the direction of the magnetic field. It is also found that the ions stream in a direction which is intermediate between the directions of the solar wind flow and the E × B drift, and that ions are present at energies somewhat above the local pick-up energy. These properties indicate that the waves which are excited by the unstable “ring-beam” pick-up ion velocity distributions do result in significant scattering of the ions in this region, both in pitch angle and in energy, but that they have insufficient amplitude to scatter the ions into near isotropy in the solar wind frame. Closer to the comet (but still upstream from the bow shock), the ion flux modulations are considerably reduced in amplitude and the ions respond less to the E × B drift, indicating that the ions are scattered nearer to isotropy in this region. Inbound, this transition takes place relatively abruptly at a distance of 4 × 105 km in association with an increase in the solar wind speed, after which the ion flux increases, and ceases to be modulated by the field direction, while the streaming direction is continuously antisolar and unmodulated by the direction of the E × B drift. Outbound, weak vestiges of the ring-beam ion anisotropy are present in the region immediately upstream from the bow shock (at −1 × 105 km), but these become more marked at distances in excess of t4 × 105 km, increasing gradually with increasing distance from the comet. It is shown that the evolution of the ion properties is qualitatively consistent with expectations based on quasi-linear diffusion of the ions by the magnetosonic waves observed during the encounter.  相似文献

We revisit the rotation dynamics of a rigid satellite with either a liquid core or a global subsurface ocean. In both problems, the flow of the fluid component is assumed inviscid. The study of a hollow satellite with a liquid core is based on the Poincaré–Hough model which provides exact equations of motion. We introduce an approximation when the ellipticity of the cavity is low. This simplification allows to model both types of satellite in the same manner. The analysis of their rotation is done in a non-canonical Hamiltonian formalism closely related to Poincaré’s “forme nouvelle des équations de la mécanique”. In the case of a satellite with a global ocean, we obtain a seven-degree-of-freedom system. Six of them account for the motion of the two rigid components, and the last one is associated with the fluid layer. We apply our model to Titan for which the origin of the obliquity is still a debated question. We show that the observed value is compatible with Titan slightly departing from the hydrostatic equilibrium and being in a Cassini equilibrium state.  相似文献

The oceanographic phenomenon known as El Niño is the subject of intensive recent study. Any hypotheses regarding physical causes and predictability of El Niño should consider its geological history. New geoarchaeological evidence suggests that the El Niño phenomenon did not exist along the northern and central coasts of Peru before about 5000 years B.P. Molluscan faunas from archaeological sites at Pampa las Salinas and Salinas de Chao permit temporal bracketing of a major structural change in the East Pacific water mass. The boundary between the warm Panamic Province and the cold Peruvian Province, which today occurs at about 5 degrees south latitude, was some 500 km further south from at least 11,000 years B.P. to about 5000 years B.P. This conclusion is corroborated by many other lines of evidence including phosphorite distribution, timing of glacial retreat, sea level change, radiolarian, diatom and fish scale distributions, and beach ridge patterns. The present day arid coastal climate of north central Peru is probably a post-5000 year B.P. development. Hunter–gatherer populations of the area would most likely have exploited more land-based seasonal resources from grasslands and forests before 5000 years B.P., and relied less upon the diminished productivity of warm water maritime resources.  相似文献

Diversity within a population has been linked to levels of both social cohesion and crime. Neighborhood crimes are the result of a complex set of factors, one of which is weak community cohesion. This article seeks to explore the impacts of diversity on burglary crime in a range of neighborhoods, using Leeds, UK as a case study. We propose a new approach to quantifying the correlates of burglary in urban areas through the use of diversity metrics. This approach is useful in unveiling the relationship between burglary and diversity in urban communities. Specifically, we employ stepwise multiple regression models to quantify the relationships between a number of neighborhood diversity variables and burglary crime rates. The results of the analyses show that the variables that represent diversity were more significant when regressed against burglary crime rates than standard socio‐demographic data traditionally used in crime studies, which do not generally use diversity variables. The findings of this study highlight the importance of neighborhood cohesion in the crime system, and the key place for diversity statistics in quantifying the relationships between neighborhood diversities and burglary. The study highlights the importance of policy planning aimed at encouraging community building in promoting neighborhood safety.  相似文献
