Carrying assorted cargo and covered with paints of varying toxicity, lost intermodal containers may take centuries to degrade on the deep seafloor. In June 2004, scientists from Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a recently lost container during a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) dive on a sediment-covered seabed at 1281 m depth in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS). The site was revisited by ROV in March 2011. Analyses of sediment samples and high-definition video indicate that faunal assemblages on the container’s exterior and the seabed within 10 m of the container differed significantly from those up to 500 m. The container surface provides hard substratum for colonization by taxa typically found in rocky habitats. However, some key taxa that dominate rocky areas were absent or rare on the container, perhaps related to its potential toxicity or limited time for colonization and growth. Ecological effects appear to be restricted to the container surface and the benthos within ∼10 m. 相似文献

Delineating capture zones of pumping wells is an important part of safe drinking water and well protection programs. Capture
zones or contributing areas of a groundwater extraction well are the parts of the aquifer recharge areas from which the wells
draw their water. Their extent and location depend on the hydrogeologic conditions such as groundwater recharge, pumping scenario
and the aquifer properties such as hydraulic conductivity, porosity, heterogeneity of the medium and hydraulic gradient. Different
methods of delineation can be used depending on the complexity of the hydrogeologic conditions. In this study, a 3-dimensional
transient numerical MODFLOW model was developed for the Central Passaic River Basin (CPRB), and used with a MODPATH particle
tracking code to determine 3-dimensional transient capture zones. Analytically calculated capture zones from previous studies
at the site were compared with the new numerically simulated capture zones. The study results revealed that the analytical
solution was more conservative, estimating larger capture zones than the numerical models. Of all the parameters that can
impact the size, shape and location of a capture zone, the hydraulic conductivity is one of the most critical. Capture zones

Poisson’s ratio (static) appears as a parameter in models of soft-sediment geomechanical processes such as gas bubble formation and bioturbation, and in a number of practical applications, including acoustic imaging, but is rarely measured in soft near-surface (upper 20 cm) marine sediments. A new uniaxial apparatus was developed to assess Poisson’s ratios of cylindrical samples of soft cohesive sediments under finite-strain, unconfined, undrained conditions. No constraining membrane around the sample is necessary in the instrument. By monitoring the fluid level in a capillary, changes in sample volume can be determined to high precision (reproducibility). Measurements on reference materials, i.e., gelatine and polyurethane, also indicate high accuracy (veracity). For natural sediments from Nova Scotia, Canada, Poisson’s ratios range from 0.4951 to 0.5 with no indication of anisotropy; therefore, such sediments act as incompressible solids to short-term/small-magnitude stresses, as occur during bubble formation and infaunal movement. 相似文献

We present the results of a combined observational and numerical study to investigate cool plumes of nutrient-rich upwelled water that emanate near the Kahurangi Shoals and extend into Greater Cook Strait. Surface temperature and chlorophyll are mapped using satellite observations to produce surface climatologies, to validate a numerical simulation and to show the utility of using spatial temperature differences as a measure of upwelling. We find upwelling near the Kahurangi Shoals is strongly wind-driven in the weather band. Upwelling occurs at all times of the year, but its surface signature is only visible in summer months. The upwelled nutrient-rich water supports increased primary production compared to surrounding waters, particularly in summer when the water column is more stratified and surrounding surface waters are presumably nutrient depleted. 相似文献

Multi‐channel Advanced Very‐High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images of sea surface temperature (SST) in the New Zealand region have been archived since 1989. A comparison of these data with conductivity‐temperature‐depth (CTD) and expendable bathythermograph (XBT) data shows that the AVHRR temperatures are about 7% too high (when expressed in °C). Once the AVHRR temperatures have been corrected, they measure SST with an uncertainty of about 0.7°C. 相似文献

Field measurements were used to validate predictions for the initial dilution of negatively buoyant, cold‐water inflows to Lake Taupo, as part of a study to quantify mixing processes associated with the two largest inflows to the lake. The predictions were made using a formulation originally derived for positively buoyant, warm‐water inflows to cooling ponds. The formulation predicts the total dilution of an inflow during its inertia‐dominated phase between its entrance to the lake and the point where buoyancy forces are great enough to cause the inflow to plunge and form a submerged density current. In one of the measured inflows, the inflowing jet was free to entrain from both sides; in the other, entrainment was restricted on one side by attachment of the inflowing jet to the shoreline of a bay just upstream of the plunge point. In the former example, the unmodified coefficients from the cooling pond formulation provided an excellent prediction of initial dilution. In the latter example, entrainment was reduced and different coefficients were derived. In both examples the inflows remained attached to the lake bed throughout their course until their liftoff at depths of 45–55 m to form interflows. The difference between coefficients for the two inflows indicates that the coefficient values should be considered site‐specific. The formulation is not valid for inflows that separate from the bottom of the inflow channel before plunging. The entrance mixing formulation was incorporated in a more general model of lake stratification, DYRESM, which already includes a well‐documented routine for routing underflows down submerged channels on the bed of a lake. Application of the model to the inflows measured in Lake Taupo gave good results for two model outputs that were not involved in the calibration of the entrance mixing formulation, but that are affected by the result of the initial dilution calculation—the temperatures in the river plume after it has plunged, and the insertion depth. 相似文献

The relative distributions of mid‐ and late‐stage phyllosomas, and pueruli, of Jasus edwardsii from five research cruises off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand were analysed. A statistical approach was taken, using a bootstrapping with replacement method to test whether the observed mid‐ and late‐stage phyllosomas could have come from the same distribution. Differences in distribution between mid‐ and late‐stage phyllosomas were very close to significant at 95% confidence for two cruises, significant at 85% confidence for one cruise, and two cruises showed a non‐significant result. When all cruise data were combined into one analysis, the differences between mid‐ and late‐stage phyllosomas were significant with 85% confidence. On average, late‐stage phyllosomas were found 49 km further inshore than mid‐stage phyllosomas. One station during one cruise and one transect during another showed such high abundances that they affected the analyses. When these outlier data were excluded, the differences in mid‐and late‐stage distributions become significant with 99% confidence. One explanation for observed distribution differences is that the late‐stage phyllosomas swim shoreward—as the pueruli are believed to do. This implies an ability to navigate in both these early life forms. If the late‐stage larvae are indeed swimming horizontally, it is likely that this is most effectively accomplished by final‐stage phyllosomas, which have well developed pleopods, similar to those in the puerulus stage. 相似文献

This study reports the first in situ measurements of tensile fracture toughness, K
IC, of soft, surficial, cohesive marine sediments. A newly developed probe continuously measures the stress required to cause
tensile failure in sediments to depths of up to 1 m. Probe measurements are in agreement with standard laboratory methods
of K
IC measurements in both potter’s clay and natural sediments. The data comprise in situ depth profiles from three field sites
in Nova Scotia, Canada. Measured K
IC at two muddy sites (median grain size of 23–50 μm) range from near zero at the sediment surface to >1,800 Pa m1/2 at 0.2 m depth. These profiles also appear to identify the bioturbated/mixed depth. K
IC for a sandy site (>90% sand) is an order of magnitude lower than for the muddy sediments, and reflects the lack of cohesion/adhesion.
A comparison of K
IC, median grain size, and porosity in muddy sediments indicates that consolidation increases fracture strength, whereas inclusion
of sand causes weakening; thus, sand-bearing layers can be easily identified in K
IC profiles. K
IC and vane-measured shear strength correlate strongly, which suggests that the vane measurements should perhaps be interpreted
as shear fracture toughness, rather than shear strength. Comparison of in situ probe-measured values with K
IC of soils and gelatin shows that sediments have a K

We conducted a land change analysis to determine if the forest communities of presettlement and present contain areas that are analogous in composition, using surveys of the Holland Land Company (1797–1799) and U.S. Forest Service (1991–1993) from western New York. Gridded forest-type maps are produced from each survey using two models: a uniform model that assumes each data grid cell is occupied by a single forest type, and a mixture model in which grid cells are assumed to be occupied by multiple forest types in different proportions. The mixture model consistently detects a larger area of analogous communities in the two time periods at both global and local scales. 相似文献
