Persistent activity at Masaya Volcano, Nicaragua, is characterised by cycles of intense degassing, lava lake development
and pit crater formation. It provides a useful site to study the processes which govern such activity, because of its easy
accessibility and relatively short cycles (years to decades). An understanding of the present activity is important because
Masaya is visited by large numbers of tourists, is located close to major cities and has produced voluminous lavas, plinian
eruptions and ignimbrites in the recent past. We provide structural and geophysical data that characterise the "normal" present
state of activity. These indicate that the ongoing degassing phase (1993 to present) was not caused by fresh magma intrusion.
It was associated with shallow density changes within the active Santiago pit crater. The activity appears to be associated
predominantly with shallow changes in the pit crater structure. More hazardous activity will occur only if there are significant
departures from the present gravity, deformation and seismic signatures.

The Bleikvassli massive sulfide ore deposit is hosted by Proterozoic pelitic, quartzofeldspathic, and amphibolitic rocks
of the Uppermost Allochthon of the Scandinavian Caledonides. Staurolite-garnet-biotite and kyanite-staurolite-biotite assemblages
indicate that metamorphism reached the kyanite zone of the amphibolite facies. Geothermobarometry was conducted on rocks in
and around the deposit using a variety of silicate and sulfide calibrations. Temperature determinations are most reliant on
the garnet-biotite exchange reaction, with analyses obtained from 259 garnet rims and adjacent biotite. Results from nine
calibrations of the garnet-biotite geothermometer are considered, but compositional limitations of many calibrations involving
high Ca and Mn contents in garnet and AlVI and Ti in biotite make many of the coexisting mineral pairs unsuitable. Average temperatures calculated from the two calibrations
that most closely address the garnet-biotite compositions observed at Bleikvassli are 584 °C ± 49 °C and 570 °C ± 40 °C. The
application of two calibrations of the garnet-staurolite geothermometer on a limited number of samples yields 581 °C ± 2 °C
and 589 °C ± 12 °C, assuming a
H2O=0.84, based upon calculations of the modal proportions of gaseous species. Pressure determinations are less constrained.
Phengite and plagioclase-biotite-garnet-muscovite geobarometers give average pressures of approximately 5.0 kbar and 8.5 ± 1.2 kbar,
respectively. Pressures obtained from the sphalerite-hexagonal pyrrhotite-pyrite barometer average 7.7 ± 1.0 kbar. In consideration
of these results, the peak metamorphic conditions at the Bleikvassli deposit are estimated to be 580 °C and 8 kbar.

In the Proterozoic Schist Belt of Nigeria, lenticular bodies of metabasites and meta-ultramafics are frequently intercalated within staurolite bearing metapelitic schists. Such a metamorphosed mafic-ultramafic complex is particularly well exposed in the Mokuro riverbed between the towns of Ife and Ilesha. These outcrops display contact relationships with the surrounding metasediments, as well as between the individual mafic and ultramafic rock types. The most common mafic rocks are indistinctly layered amphibolites, accompanied by apatite rich amphibolites and massive amphibolites, in part rich in ilmenite and pyrrhotite. Among the generally massive ultramafic rocks, nearly monomineralic amphibole rocks predominate, while chlorite-amphibole, talc-chlorite-amphibole and talc bearing olivine-chlorite-amphibole rocks occur in subordinate amounts.Field, textural and geochemical evidence suggest that the mafic-ultramafic complex derived from a thick, structurally differentiated basaltic sill that contained doleritic portions in its interior. Slow cooling rates in these inner parts enabled crystal settling with the formation of ultramafic cumulates. Due to the enrichment of volatiles during the crystallisation process, higher amounts of apatite and sulphides, as well as late magmatic amphibole, were formed in parts of the mafic-ultramafic body.Mineral assemblages in the mafic-ultramafic complex testify to a metamorphic overprint under amphibolite-facies conditions. Thermodynamic modelling in the system CMFASH leads to an estimated P–T range of 1.5–3 kbar and 550–620°C for the metamorphic peak assemblage talc-olivine-chlorite-Ca amphibole-orthoamphibole. 相似文献

SummaryVariability and Anisotropy of Mechanical Properties of the Pittsburgh Coal Seam Results of an experimental program to determine the vertical variation of material stiffness and strength of an important coal seam are presented, with the aim of providing information for realistic modeling for purposes of analysis. The seam is divided into four zones, and data from each are evaluated statistically. It is concluded that this seam contains two zones with measurably different properties, which, however, are small compared to the observed scatter of data.

Le but de l'étude est d'obtenir des valeurs réalistes qui puissent être utilisées dans une analyse par méthodes numériques. Le banc est divisé en quatre zones, et les résultats sont analysés de façon statistique, séparément pour chaque zone. On a conclut que ce banc contient deux zones dont les propriétés mécaniques diffèrent. Cependant ces différences ne dépassent pas l'ordre de grandeur des écarts dans les observations sur chaque zone.

Measurements of thermal conductivity on 106 disc specimens of rocks from 275 m of the Permian to Triassic section of the Southern Coalfield of the southern Sydney Basin have been carried out in an effort to explain a high rank gradient in the Permian coals. The samples came from six diamond drill holes north and west of Wollongong, although one hole only provided specimens of a syenitic sill (n = 17, mean thermal conductivity = 2.36 W/m°K, s.d. 0.03). When combined with previously published data on chip specimens, with which there is good agreement, from a further four drill holes the mean thermal conductivity for the late Permian and early Triassic sandstones and shales is 3.20 W/m°K.Heat generation by Permian volcanic rocks below the coal measures (from about 1 to 3 μW/m3), and by basement granitic rocks, appears to be consistent with previously reported heat flow for the southern Sydney Basin (about 80 mW/m2). This heat flow is a relatively high value for the east coast of Australia. Younger (Mesozoic and Tertiary) intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks produce local coal-rank anomalies, but do not appear to have any regional effect.The rank of coals above the Permian volcanic rocks appears to be little affected by the presence of the igneous rocks and the coal-rank decreases towards the major area of vulcanicity. Organic matter in sedimentary rocks interbedded with the volcanic rocks is of relatively high rank but it appears that these thermal effects do not extend more than about 100 m above the base of the coal measures. The area of high rank north and northwest of Wollongong seems likely to be a regional effect associated with a combination of high heat generation in basement and the Permian rocks, and high heat flow from the basement. Greater cover on the coal measures, together with an increase in the proportion of rocks of relatively low thermal conductivity in the cover, may also influence the rank in the Permian coal. 相似文献

Tracing variability of run‐off generation in mountainous permafrost of semi‐arid north‐eastern Mongolia 下载免费PDF全文
The headwaters of mountainous, discontinuous permafrost regions in north‐eastern Mongolia are important water resources for the semi‐arid country, but little is known about hydrological processes there. Run‐off generation on south‐facing slopes, which are devoid of permafrost, has so far been neglected and is totally unknown for areas that have been affected by recent forest fires. To fill this knowledge gap, the present study applied artificial tracers on a steppe‐vegetated south‐facing and on two north‐facing slopes, burned and unburned. Combined sprinkling and dye tracer experiments were used to visualize processes of infiltration and water fluxes in the unsaturated zone. On the unburned north‐facing slope, rapid and widespread infiltration through a wet organic layer was observed down to the permafrost. On the burned profile, rapid infiltration occurred through a combusted organic and underlying mineral layer. Stained water seeped out at the bottom of both profiles suggesting a general tendency to subsurface stormflow (SSF). Ongoing SSF could directly be studied 24 h after a high‐intensity rainfall event on a 55‐m hillslope section in the burned forest. Measurements of water temperature proved the role of the permafrost layer as a base horizon for SSF. Repeated tracer injections allowed direct insights into SSF dynamics: A first injection suggested rather slow dispersive subsurface flow paths; whereas 18 h later, a second injection traced a more preferential flow system with 20 times quicker flow velocities. We speculate that these pronounced SSF dynamics are limited to burned slopes where a thermally insulating organic layer is absent. On three south‐facing soil profiles, the applied tracer remained in the uppermost 5 cm of a silt‐rich mineral soil horizon. No signs of preferential infiltration could be found, which suggested reduced biological activity under a harsh, dry and cold climate.
