We report here results from a new search for orbital motion of the accretion powered X-ray pulsar 4U 1626–67 using two different
analysis techniques. X-ray light curve obtained with the Proportional Counter Array of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during
a long observation carried out in February 1996, was used in this work. The spin period and the local period derivative were
first determined from the broad 2–60 keV energy band light curve and these were used for all subsequent timing analysis. In
the first technique, the orbital phase dependent pulse arrival times were determined for different trial orbital periods in
the range of 500 to 10,000 s. We have determined a 3σ upper limit of 13 lt-ms on the projected semimajor axis of the orbit of the neutron star for most of the orbital period range,
while in some narrow orbital period ranges, covering about 10% of the total orbital period range, it is 20lt-ms. In the second
method, we have measured the pulse arrival times at intervals of 100 s over the entire duration of the observation. The pulse
arrival time data were used to put an upper limit on any periodic arrival time delay using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram. We
have obtained a similar upper limit of 10 lt-ms using the second method over the orbital period range of 500–10,000 s. This
puts very stringent upper limits for the mass of the compact object except for the unlikely case of a complete face-on orientation
of the binary system with respect to our line-of-sight. In the light of this measurement and the earlier reports, we discuss
the possibility of this system being a neutron star with a supernovae fall-back accretion disk. 相似文献

Construction of the Farakka barrage on the Ganga River in April 1975 to augment water supply to the Calcutta port has brought about a significant increase in freshwater discharge in its distributary, the Hoogly estuary. This has naturally resulted in major changes in the ecology of this estuary, causing modifications in the structure of its fishery resources, fishing pattern, and fish production. This paper presents observations on salinity, plankton, bottom biota, fishery resource, and fish production of different zones of the Hooghly estuary during the period 1982–1992. Comparison with similar studies made before and immediately after commissioning of the Farakka barrage (1975–1977) has revealed that the increased freshwater discharge has resulted in considerable decrease in salinity throughout the estuary. The freshwater zone now extends toward the mouth of the estuary. The true estuarine zone has moved seaward and the marine zone has been restricted to the area near the mouth of the estuary. This has effected major changes in plankton dynamics, sharp decline in the fishery of marine and neritic species in the upper estuary, caused a significant increase in catch ofTenualosa ilisha and an over twofold increase in the average annual fish landings from the estuary as a whole. New zonations have been proposed based on the presently, observed salinity values, which are the most significant factor in determining the fishery of any estuary. An interdisciplinary study of the ecology of the new zones is needed to establish their correct biological characteristics. 相似文献

The epicentral tract of the great Assam earthquake of 1897 of magnitude 8·7 was monitored for about 6 months using an array
of portable seismographs. The observed seismicity pattern shows several diversely-oriented linear trends, some of which either
encompass or parallel known geological faults. A vast majority of the recorded micro-earthquakes had estimated focal depths
between 8–14 km. The maximum estimated depth was 45 km. On the basis of a seismic velocity model for the region reported recently
and these depth estimates we suggest that the rupture zone of the great 1897 earthquake had a depth of 11–12 km under the
western half of the Shillong massif. Four composite fault plane solutions define the nature of dislocation in three of the
seismic zones. Three of them show oblique thrusting while one shows pure dip slip reverse faulting. The fault plane solutions
fit into a regional pattern of a belt of earthquakes extending in NW-SE direction across the north eastern corner of the Bengal
basin. The maximum principle stress axis is approximately NS for all the solutions in conformity with the inferred direction
of the Indian-EuroAsian plate convergence in the eastern Himalaya. 相似文献

87Sr/86Sr ratios of fourteen unaltered limestone and six fossil samples show a range of 0.7066-0.7118 for the depositional water of the Middle to Upper Pennsylvanian Madera Formation. The variation of these 87Sr/86Sr ratios may be due to the restricted depositional basin and nature of the source of the Madera Formation.While fossil and limestone samples are equally good for determination of strontium isotopic composition of depositional waters, leaches of calcareous shales contain significant amount of 87Sr leached from the noncarbonate fraction during acid treatment. 相似文献

Summary This paper deals with the stresses produced by a moving stress discontinuity between two semi-infinite transversely isotropic media. The solutions for the stresses have been obtained in simple closed forms for certain types of moving stress discontinuity. Discontinuities in the normal stress as well as in the shear stress has been considered. The non‐stationary rocking response of liquid storage tanks under seismic base excitations including soil interaction has been developed based on the wavelet domain random vibration theory. The ground motion has been characterized through statistical functionals of wavelet coefficients of the ground acceleration history. The tank–liquid–foundation system is modelled as a multi‐degree‐of‐freedom (MDOF) system with both lateral and rocking motions of vibration of the foundation. The impulsive and convective modes of vibration of the liquid in the tank have been considered. The wavelet domain coupled dynamic equations are formulated and then solved to get the expressions of instantaneous power spectral density function (PSDF) in terms of functionals of input wavelet coefficients. The moments of the instantaneous PSDF are used to obtain the stochastic responses of the tank in the form of coefficients of hydrodynamic pressure, base shear and overturning base moment for the largest expected peak responses. Parametric variations are carried out to study the effects of various governing parameters like height of liquid in the tank, height–radius ratio of the tank, ratio of total liquid mass to mass of foundation, and shear wave velocity in the soil medium, on the responses of the tank. We analysed local earthquake waveforms recorded on a broad-band seismic network in northwestern Himalayas to compute the intrinsic and scattered attenuation parameters from coda waves. Similar to other tectonically active and heterogeneous regions, attenuation-frequency relation for western Himalaya is Q −1 c = (113 ± 7) f (1.01±0.05) where Qc is the coda Q parameter. Intrinsic ( Q −1 i ) and scattering ( Q −1 s ) attenuations was separated using Qc and direct S -wave Q data ( Qd ) . It is observed that estimated Q −1 c is close to Q −1 i and both of them are much larger than Q −1 s suggesting that coda decay is predominantly caused by intrinsic attenuation. At higher frequencies, both the attenuation parameters Qc and, Qd are similar indicating that coda is predominantly composed of back-scattered S waves at these frequencies. 相似文献

Groundwater extracted from shallow aquifers in the Bengal Delta is contaminated with arsenic. The fluviodeltaic process that
creates aquifers, ironically, extends its role to also contaminating them with arsenic. The arsenic distribution maps show
a spatial association of arsenic-contaminated wells with palaeo/cut-off/abandoned channels. Weight-on-evidences analysis indicates
that the zones of contamination occur around palaeo-channels within a corridor of 500–700 m that contains most of the contaminated
wells. These corridors are interpreted to be the zone of channel shifting. Contaminated wells represent point fractal geometry
that can be separated into isolated points and clusters. Clusters occur within the zone of channel shifting as obtained by
weight-on-evidences analysis. Isolated points occur within floodplain or back swamp areas. Clusters and isolated point fractals
are interpreted to reflect the process of arsenic release into groundwater. The migration of biomass within the permeable
sandy domain of channel deposits is proposed to be the predominant process in generating clusters. The isolated points represent
restricted biomass spreading in less permeable clay-silt dominated floodplains. 相似文献
