Single crystals of experimentally deformed synthetic quartz showing optical deformation lamellae were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Dislocations are distributed fairly uniformly throughout the crystal. However, parallel to the trace of the deformation lamellae, which may be irrational, there are walls of tangled dislocations whose characteristics suggest that they are directly associated with the lamellae. The nature and formation of the optical image is discussed in detail.  相似文献

At the onset of plastic deformation some materials exhibit non-monotonic behaviour in that after initially yielding the flow stress decreases with continuing strain, passing through a minimum. Strain softening destabilizes homogeneous configurations and results in the formation of bands of localized deformation. Within these bands the macro and microscales of the deformation overlap and accordingly terms have to be included in the evolution equation for the plastic strain to provide the necessary information on the material's behaviour at the next smaller scale. In the model chosen here the evolution equation has the form of a reaction diffusion equation, whereby physically the diffusion term accounts for the nonlocal interaction between dislocations on neighbouring slip planes. The model predicts the band propagation velocity, the width of the propagation front and the strain profile.  相似文献

The deviatoric stress produced in a large-volume, high-pressure apparatus of the girdle-anvil type has been estimated from the density of free dislocations induced in natural olivine single crystals (initial density of 2×106 cm?2). Experiments at maximum pressure P=40 kbar and temperature T=1050°C for t=1 h in NaCl cell assemblies and various P-T paths yield specimens whose dislocation densities are unchanged from this initial value, implying that the deviatoric stress was less than 140 bar. In BN cell assemblies, the recovered specimen from high P-T experiments exhibit much higher densities of dislocations (~109 cm?2) which have been produced by steady-state plastic deformation of the olivine crystals under a deviatoric stress of ~3 kbar. This value of deviatoric stress in BN has been corroborated by observations of the subgrain size and recrystallized grain size in specimens of longer run duration (3 h).  相似文献

The microstructural development during the transformation of omphacite into pyroxene-plagioclase symplectites has been studied in some eclogites from the Seve nappe, Central Scandinavian Caledonides. The omphacite transformation can be described as a discontinuous precipitation reaction that occurred in two clearly defined stages to produce a coarser type A, followed by a finer, type B symplectite. Each type has its distinctive chemistry. The combination of microstructural and chemical characteristics of the transformation is used to reconstruct the early stages of the cooling history of the eclogites. In addition, based on a classification of phase transformations according to growth processes, the continuous exsolution reaction reported in high-temperature omphacites is combined with the discontinuous reaction in a time-temperature transformation (TTT) diagram to produce a more unified view of the exsolution in the omphacites.  相似文献

Lattice defects along (100) planes in an orthopyroxene, En92.8-Fs7.0-Wo0.2, have been observed in the transmission electron microscope. From an analysis of the electron diffraction contrast at these defects it is proposed that the defects are regions of iron and possibly calcium enrichment. The defects are completely coherent with the lattice of the matrix and appear to be metastable or transition zones. They do not have any direct relationship with the spinodal decomposition proposed for the exsolution textures in some of the lunar pyroxenes of Apollo 11 and 12. Possible cationic ordering within these zones is discussed and the effects of such ordering on magnetic properties are considered.  相似文献

Observations at 8 sites in the outer central Great Barrier Reef show M2, S2, K1, and O1 tidal currents flow directly off-shelf (northeast), when the corresponding tide at Townsville is at zero height and falling, with typical amplitudes of 12, 6, 3, and 2 cm s?1. On the slope (at 300 m depth), the vertically averaged long-shelf component was small. On the shelf, the eccentricity of the tidal ellipses decreases shoreward and the tidal ellipses rotate anticlockwise. The major axes of the tidal ellipses tilt left of cross-shelf, especially for the diurnal constituents. There is satisfactory agreement between the observed and modelled cross-shelf currents. The long-shelf velocity is sensitive to the long-shelf changes in amplitude and phase of the tide heights and high quality tidal data for open boundary conditions will be required if numerical models are to model these currents satisfactorily.  相似文献

Marine debris threatens Northwestern Hawaiian Islands' (NWHI) coral reef ecosystems. Debris, a contaminant, entangles and kills endangered Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi), coral, and other wildlife. We describe a novel multi-agency effort using divers to systematically survey and remove derelict fishing gear from two NWHI in 1999. 14 t of derelict fishing gear were removed and debris distribution, density, type and fouling level documented at Lisianski Island and Pearl and Hermes Atoll. Reef debris density ranged from 3.4 to 62.2 items/km2. Trawl netting was the most frequent debris type encountered (88%) and represented the greatest debris component recovered by weight (35%), followed by monofilament gillnet (34%), and maritime line (23%). Most debris recovered, 72%, had light or no fouling, suggesting debris may have short oceanic circulation histories. Our study demonstrates that derelict fishing gear poses a persistent threat to the coral reef ecosystems of the Hawaiian Archipelago.  相似文献

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) commissioned a special report on emissions scenarios in 2000 so as to forecast global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for a variety of assumptions. These scenarios have been subjected to a multitude of criticisms, alleging overoptimistic predictions for fossil fuel production rates. Intrigued by this controversy, this paper employs the Hubbert linearization technique to solve for ultimately recoverable resources (URR) of fossil fuels for six significant IPCC scenarios. The predictions are substantially higher than geological URR estimates found in recent literature, ranging from 19 to over 200% higher for oil, 16 to over 500% for coal, and 171 to over 500% for natural gas, depending on the scenario. Subsequently, the atmospheric CO2 concentrations resulting from full consumption of URR related to IPCC data, as well as literature-based URR, are determined with a simple model. The former concentrations range from 640 to over 1,300 ppm. In comparison, the peak-based URR in the literature yield 463–577 ppm. All of these figures are higher than the 450 ppm ‘threshold’ which some see as critical. Therefore, despite peaking fossil fuels, concern over climate change is still warranted. At the same time, the fossil fuel production inputs to the IPCC’s CO2 emissions models appear predominantly overoptimistic, which calls into question the accuracy of the climate change assessment outputs. Moving forward, the IPCC is encouraged to re-assess its fossil fuel forecasts, incorporating more reasonable scenarios for peak production of fossil fuels.  相似文献
