—Gephart and Forsyth’s (1984) algorithm for stress inversion of earthquake fault-plane solutions has been applied to a set of ninety intermediate and deep events occurring in the southern Tyrrhenian region between 1976 and 1995. P- and S-wave data from local seismic networks in southern Italy, the Italian National Network and international bulletins, have been used for hypocenter and focal mechanism computations. Stress inversion runs performed after accurate selection and weighting of fault-plane solutions have allowed us to identify stress space variations at a higher level of detail than available from all previous investigations carried out in the study area. The maximum compressive stress has been shown to follow the depth-decreasing dip of the Wadati-Benioff zone, along the entire zone from a depth of 90 km, to the depth of the deepest events (about 500 km). Variations to such a stress pattern have been found, possibly related to mantle dynamics and the complex composition of the subducting structure. The diffused state of down-dip compression suggests that the Tyrrhenian subduction has already evolved to the point where the lower end of the slab has reached high-strength mantle materials, the load of the excess mass is entirely supported from below and most of the subducted slab is under compression. In agreement with the lack of large, shallow thrusting events in the immersion zone, the findings of the present study appear to agree well with geodynamic models assuming a passive subduction process with eastward roll-back of the Ionian lithosphere in the study area. In this context, the depth-decrease of the slab dip may also find a reasonable explanation.  相似文献

An in situ high pressure powder diffraction study, using high-brilliance synchrotron radiation, on lead feldspar (PbAl2Si2O8) was performed. Two samples, with Q od=0.68 and 0.76, were loaded in a diamond anvil cell and were compressed up to 11 GPa. Up to P=7.1 GPa the only phase present is lead feldspar. In the range 7.1–9.4 GPa sudden changes in the position of the reflections suggest the transformation of lead feldspar to a new phase (probably feldspar-like). The absence of split that would be compatible with triclinic symmetry rules out the monoclinic-triclinic transition, that was reported for the structurally similar strontium feldspar. At P>9.4 GPa some new extra reflections not indexable in the feldspar cell are present as well. During decompression the lead feldspar was the only phase present at P<6 GPa. Peak enlargement was observed with pressure, probably preliminary to amorphization. However almost complete amorphization was observed only after fortuitous shock compression at ∼18 GPa; the crystallinity was recovered at room pressure after decompression. The bulk modulus for lead feldspar was K=71.0(9) and 67.6(1.2) GPa for the two samples, in the range reported for feldspars. The cell parameters show a compression pattern which is similar to that observed in anorthite, with Δa/a 0c/c 0b/b 0; comparison with the high temperature behaviour shows that for lead feldspar the strain tensor with pressure is more isotropic and the deformation along a is less prominent. A turnover in the behaviour of the β angle with pressure suggests a change in the compression behaviour at P∼2 GPa. Rietveld refinement of the Pb coordinates was performed in a series of spectra with pressure ranging from 0.6 to 6.5 GPa. The combined analysis of cell parameters and Pb coordinates with pressure showed that the compression of the structure is mainly achieved by an approach of Pb atoms along a *. Complementary geophysical surveys on large landslides help revealgeologic structures and processes, and thus can help devise mitigation strategies. The combined interpretation of these methods enhance the result of each data set interpretation and makes it possible to derive a geological model of the landslide.We chose a test site on the Boup landslide (Wallis, western SwissAlps) to test high-resolution seismic reflection surveyscombined with ground penetratingradar (GPR), electromagnetic (EM) and electrokinetic spontaneous potential (SP) measurements.The results of the high-resolution seismic surveys suggest thatthe sliding is within a gypsum layer at 50 m depth and not as previously believed along a deeper (70 m) gypsum-shale boundary, also mapped seismically. Inversion of electromagnetic profiles (EM-34) with constraints from seismic data provided a model cross-section of conductivity values of the landslide (20–25 mS/m) and of the surrounding stable ground (10–15 mS/m), and it helped outline their boundary at depth.The accurate surface location of the landslide limit could be detected withelectromagnetic measurements of shallower depths of investigation (EM-31). Positive PS anomalies revealed an upward flow of mineralised water interpreted to follow the lateral boundary of the Boup landslide on its east side. Limited success was obtained withGPR profiling. This method can be hampered by conductive shallow layers, and itssuccessful application on landslides is expected to be strongly site dependant.  相似文献

The chemical mass balance of calcrete genesis is studied on a typical sequence developed in granite, in the Toledo mountains, Central Spain.

Field evidence and petrographic observations indicate that the texture and the bulk volume of the parent rock are strictly preserved all along the studied calcrete profile.

Microscopic observations indicate that the calcitization process starts within the saprolite, superimposed on the usual mechanisms of granite weathering: the fresh rock is first weathered to secondary clays, mainly smectites, which are then pseudomorphically replaced by calcite. Based on this evidence, chemical mass transfers are calculated, assuming iso-volume transformation from the parent rock to the calcrete.

The mass balance results show the increasing loss of matter due to weathering of the primary phases, from the saprolite towards the calcrete layers higher in the sequence. Zr, Ti or Th, which are classically considered as immobile during weathering, are also depleted along the profile, especially in the calcrete layer. This results from the prevailing highly alkaline conditions, which could account for the simultaneous precipitation of CaCO3 and silicate dissolution.

The calculated budget suggests that the elements exported from the weathering profile are provided dominantly by the weathering of plagioclase and biotite. We calculate that 8–42% of the original Ca remains in granitic relics, while only 15% of the authigenic Ca released by weathering is reincorporated in the calcite. This suggests that 373 kg/m2 of calcium (i.e., three times the original amount) is imported into the calcrete from allochtonous sources, probably due to aeolian transport from distant limestone formations.  相似文献

An accurate measurement of the gravitational field of the Sun, needed for the verification of the theories of gravitation, requires the use of a geodesic test body. To eliminate the effect of non-gravitational forces (mainly the solar radiation pressure) we propose to use two twin space probes, whose surface has identical geometrical and optical properties, but with different mass. Their differential motion leads to the determination of the motion of an ideal geodesic point. We discuss in detail the various conditions which are needed to ensure the required degree of identity and submit as a possible solution two cylindrical probes, whose sides are covered by cavities to make them absorbing, rotating at a fast rate around an axis orthogonal to the ecliptic plane. We discuss briefly also the accuracy in the determination of the parameters of the metric field of the Sun obtainable from range measurements.Work done at the European Space Research Institute, Frascati, Italy  相似文献

Data concerning grain-size distribution, mineralogy, geochemistry, and chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations, obtained from 246 surface sediment samples collected in the Northern Adriatic sea (Italian area), provide the basis for a multivariate statistical analysis which evaluates the influence of riverine inputs, the differences among various depositional environments and the presence of polluted zones.Cluster analysis applied to grain size has identified nine groups of lithotypes associated with the morphology and the hydrology of the basin.In the Gulf of Venice, principal component analysis on clay minerals and carbonates has permitted recognition of two main areas located north and south of the Brenta river. More subareas correspond to other lithological types.Principal component analysis of nine metal (Hg, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, Fe, Ni, and Co) concentrations reveals that the studied sea area is more complex from the geochemical point of view. Three geochemical zones related to riverine inputs, different lithotypes and specific forms of contamination are identified. High pollution of both halocarbons and heavy metals is associated with fine grain size.  相似文献

A multiphase model is proposed to describe the mechanical behaviour of geomaterials reinforced by linear inclusions. This macroscopic approach considers the reinforced soil or rock mass as the superposition of continuous media. Equations of motion and constitutive laws of the model are first derived. Its implementation in a finite element computer code is then detailed. A modified implicit algorithm for elastoplastic problems is proposed. The model and its implementation are fully validated for rock‐bolted tunnels (comparison with scale model experiments) and piled raft foundations (comparison with the classical ‘hybrid method’). The diffusion rates of carbon and oxygen in two calcite crystals of different Mn contents have been studied between 500° and 800° C in a CO2-H2O atmosphere (P CO 2=1?5 bars, P H2O=0.02?24 bars) labeled with 13C and 18O. Isotope concentration gradients within annealed specimens were measured using a secondary ion microprobe by depth profiling parallel and perpendicular to the c axis. Despite the anisotropic structure of calcite, the diffusion of carbon and oxygen are both very nearly isotropic. Least-squares fitting of the carbon data to an Arrhenius relation gives an activation energy of 87±2 kcal/mole, with D 0 terms dependent only slightly upon direction: 1 $$D_{\text{0}} {\text{(}}\parallel c{\text{) = }}\left( {9\frac{{ + 12}}{{ - 5}}} \right){\text{x10}}^{\text{2}} cm^2 /s$$ , 2 $$D_{\text{0}} {\text{(}} \bot c{\text{) = }}\left( {5\frac{{ + 6}}{{ - 3}}} \right){\text{x10}}^{\text{2}} cm^2 /s$$ . These results are in close agreement with previous determinations. Results for oxygen diffusion, however, give D values much larger than those previously reported for dry conditions; at 650° to 800° C the D values are two orders of magnitude larger. The diffusion of oxygen, unlike carbon, is strongly dependent on water pressure, as well as Mn content, and does not fit an Arrhenius relation over the entire temperature range. On the basis of these observations and considerations of the defect chemistry of calcite, it is proposed that carbon migrates as a Frenkel pair. The diffusion of oxygen, however, appears to be more complicated and may depend upon several simultaneous mechanisms.  相似文献
