In this article, we document a detailed analytical characterisation of zircon M127, a homogeneous 12.7 carat gemstone from Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. Zircon M127 has TIMS‐determined mean U–Pb radiogenic isotopic ratios of 0.084743 ± 0.000027 for 206Pb/238U and 0.67676 ± 0.00023 for 207Pb/235U (weighted means, 2s uncertainties). Its 206Pb/238U age of 524.36 ± 0.16 Ma (95% confidence uncertainty) is concordant within the uncertainties of decay constants. The δ18O value (determined by laser fluorination) is 8.26 ± 0.06‰ VSMOW (2s), and the mean 176Hf/177Hf ratio (determined by solution ICP‐MS) is 0.282396 ± 0.000004 (2s). The SIMS‐determined δ7Li value is ?0.6 ± 0.9‰ (2s), with a mean mass fraction of 1.0 ± 0.1 μg g?1 Li (2s). Zircon M127 contains ~ 923 μg g?1 U. The moderate degree of radiation damage corresponds well with the time‐integrated self‐irradiation dose of 1.82 × 1018 alpha events per gram. This observation, and the (U–Th)/He age of 426 ± 7 Ma (2s), which is typical of unheated Sri Lankan zircon, enable us to exclude any thermal treatment. Zircon M127 is proposed as a reference material for the determination of zircon U–Pb ages by means of SIMS in combination with hafnium and stable isotope (oxygen and potentially also lithium) determination.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the Starzach site, a region featuring numerous natural CO2 emission spots, such as mofettes, that reappeared after a longer period of extensive industrial CO2 mining. We discuss the results of a detailed literature study on the geological setting and the activities related to the gas mining in combination with own measurements to introduce the site as an example on how gas leakage from an insecure CCS reservoir could manifest at the surface. The site is in particular interesting for such investigations as the CO2 emissions started to replenish after the end of the CO2 mining and offers the unique possibility to investigate an increase in degassing activity as it might be expected for an active CCS site where leakage is suspected. Based on the geological setting and soil, gas emission, and isotope investigations, we further discuss the source of the CO2 emission and the gas ascent to the ground surface via deep-reaching faults, latter being so far excluded by previous work. The combination of our extensive literature review and recent field investigations allowed us to draw new geological conclusions for the site that were under discussion for a long time and to give insight into the site’s potential for CCS-related analog studies in the future.  相似文献

In recent years, speckle interferometry has been successfully applied to various solar phenomena and provides a powerful tool to study solar small-scale structures. The present investigation lays special emphasis on sunspots and sunspot pores. The observations have been performed with the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) at the Observatorio del Teide (Tenerife) in the years from 1992 to 1994. Time series of high-spatial-resolution observations reveal the highly dynamical evolution of sunspot fine structures such as umbral dots, penumbral grains or the small-scale brightenings in the vicinity of sunspots observed in the wings of strong chromospheric absorption lines (moustache phenomenon). The reconstructed images show small-scale structures close to the telescopic diffraction limit of 0.16 at 550 nm. Furthermore, the high transmission of a Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) as the principal optical element of a two-dimensional spectrometer allows one to reconstruct directly images taken within a passband of 0.014 nm.  相似文献

Fusulinids from the Rosh Gol, Mastuj, Reshun Gol (East Hindu Kush) and Baroghil (West Karakorum) localities are studied. Five successive fusulinid assemblages from the Rosh Gol section characterize the Sakmarian (?), Yakhtashian-Bolorian, and Kubergandian stages of the Permian. Fusulinids of the Sakmarian (?) Stage are discovered in the Baroghil locality. In the Mastuj and Reshun Gol localities, rocks of natural outcrops, talus cones, and pebbles of the Cretaceous conglomerates yield predominantly the Kubergandian fusulinids accompanied sometimes by the Sakmarian (?) and Bolorian forms. Four new species Monodiexodina talenti, Nonpseudofusulina conaghani, N. yarkhunensis, and N. mawsoni are described.  相似文献

Observational evidence shows that gravitational lensing induces an angular correlation between the distribution of galaxies and much more distant QSOs. We use weak gravitational lensing theory to calculate this angular correlation, updating previous calculations and presenting new results exploring the dependence of the correlation on the large-scale structure. We study the dependence of the predictions on a variety of cosmological models, such as cold dark matter models, mixed dark matter models and models based on quintessence. We also study the dependence on the assumptions made about the nature of the primordial fluctuation spectrum: adiabatic, isocurvature and power spectra motivated by the cosmic string scenario are investigated. Special attention is paid to the issue of galaxy biasing, which is fully incorporated. We show that different mass power spectra imply distinct predictions for the angular correlation, and therefore the angular correlation provides an extra source of information about cosmological parameters and mechanisms of structure formation. We compare our results with observational data and discuss their potential uses. In particular, it is suggested that the observational determination of the galaxy–QSO correlation may be used to give an independent measurement of the mass power spectrum.  相似文献

Summary. Basement structures mapped in the Devonian Adavale Basin, eastern Australia, indicate two styles of lower-crustal involvement in the formation of upper-crustal structures. The first style is typified by thrust features in the upper-crustal sedimentary section and basement, a response to lower-crustal shortening over a wide area. The second style includes lower-crustal thrusting and thickening in a limited region, with associated uplift of the upper crust. These two styles suggest that the upper and lower crust were mechanically decoupled during Palaeozoic compressive episodes.  相似文献

Multilayer coatings for reflecting hard X-rays up to 80 keV, like W/Si and Pt/C, have been studied for several years. To go to higher energies, in the range of 100 keV to 250 keV, one needs coatings with smaller d-spacings than can currently be made with these material combinations, and a lower interfacial roughness. With the new material combinations of WC/SiC the interface roughness can be reduced down to between 0.23 nm and 0.25 nm enabling bi-layer thicknesses down to 1.0 nm to reflect efficiently. The production of thinner period coatings thus enables the possibility for focusing optic designs with reasonable focal lengths and throughput up to 250 keV.  相似文献

Biomarker compositions of particulate organic matter (POM) from the oligotrophic Lake Brienz and the eutrophic Lake Lugano (both Switzerland) are compared, in order to obtain information about organic matter (OM) production and transformation processes in relation to water column stratification. Eutrophic conditions in Lake Lugano are reflected by enhanced alkalinity, elevated total organic carbon (TOC) and chlorin contents compared with Lake Brienz. Lower δ13C values of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in Lake Lugano reflect enhanced OM respiration in the water column.Differences in OM dynamics between both lakes, as well as seasonal variations, are evidenced by TOC-normalised concentration profiles of total fatty acids (FAs) and total neutrals. In Lake Brienz, the results reflect the relative contributions of primary productivity and refractory, allochthonous OM to POM, governed by particle load and interflows due to density stratification. The depth trends at Lake Lugano are a result of high primary productivity, water column stratification and associated particle load in the upper layers, as well as microbially induced degradation close to the chemocline and greater preservation under anoxic conditions. Minor differences exist with regard to the OM composition. In both lakes, FA distributions and the composition of n-alkanols indicate a predominant autochthonous OM source (algae, zooplankton, bacteria). Inputs of OM from diatoms are reflected in highly-branched isoprenoid (HBI) alkenes, 16:1 n-FAs and 24-methylcholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol (either epibrassicasterol or brassicasterol). Differences in relative proportions of n-C16 vs. n-C18 FAs and alkanols, respectively, as well as in the percentages of C27, C28 and C29 sterols relative to the sum of sterols are related to differences in the abundances of chrysophytes, diatoms and green algae within the euphotic zone of both lakes as well as in bacterial activity and soil in-wash. High relative proportions of cholesterol in the autumn samples, most pronounced at Lake Lugano, were attributed to an increased input from zooplankton grazing in the water column.Differences in OM degradation processes are reflected in slightly higher chlorin index values and higher relative proportions of saturated vs. unsaturated n-FAs in Lake Lugano. Higher contents of branched chain FAs, 16:1ω7 n-FA, and enhanced 18:1ω7/18:1ω9 n-FA ratios suggest enhanced bacterial biomass in the water column of Lake Lugano close to the chemocline. Increasing proportions of saturated n-FAs and n-alkanols with increasing water depth, most distinct in the autumn for both lakes, argue for intensified bacterial activity and degradation of OM during autumn. High relative contents of sterols and low n-alkanol concentrations in POM close to the chemocline at Lake Lugano during spring are interpreted to reflect higher primary productivity in the photic zone, OM export to the deeper parts and enhanced degradation rates of more labile constituents (i.e. C13–C20 n-alkanols), as compared to Lake Brienz.  相似文献
