For a period of 2 a, pore water composition in a heavily contaminated river floodplain soil was monitored in situ. Pore water samples were collected 12 times over all seasons in a profile ranging from aerobic to sulphidic redox conditions, and As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ca, Cl, SO4, DOC, IOC and pH were determined. The variability of pH, IOC, DOC and Ca was found to be rather small during the year and within the profile (rsd < 0.04, 0.16, 0.24 and 0.22, respectively). The temporal variability of the metal and As concentrations was small, too, whereas changes with depth were distinct. Under sulphidic conditions, concentrations were below 1 μg L−1 (Cd, Cu, Pb) or 10 μg L−1 (Zn, As). The data set was compared with results from a geochemical model that was fully parameterised from literature data and included equilibrium speciation, sorption and mineral dissolution. The general pattern of the solid–solution partitioning of Cd, Cu, Zn and As in the profile was predicted well by mechanistic geochemical modelling on the basis of solid phase composition. Metals strongly bound to organic matter such as Cd and Cu were predicted better than metals mainly present within a mineral. Detailed information regarding the presence of colloidal Fe and Mn in pore water might improve the prediction of the solid–solution partitioning of a number of metals. The study also indicates that the chemical behaviour of Pb is still not understood sufficiently.  相似文献

Detailed analysis of basal organic deposits underlying Hammock River marsh, Connecticut allowed documentation of water-level changes that occurred between 13,000 and 6000 yrs B.P. Four main periods of groundwater- and lake-level movements and related environmental changes can be identified.

1. (1) 12,500-10,200 yrs B.P. (lake stage): very rapid rise of the groundwater table of about 2 to 3 m, resulting in a shallow lake, followed by a more gradual rise of about 2.5 to 1.5 m.

2. (2) 10,200-7000 yrs B.P. (freshwater marsh, stage 1): slow overall rise of the water table interrupted by a drop of at least 1 m between about 9500 and 9000 yrs B.P. and of at least 0.8 m between about 8000 and 7500 yrs B.P., each event leading to oxidation and maceration of organic material.

3. (3) 7000-6400 yrs B.P. (complete desiccation of the swamp): rapid fall of the water table of at least 3.9 m. causing large-scale down-wasting of the accumulated peat.

4. (4) After 6400 yrs B.P. (freshwater marsh, stage 2): rapid rise of the water table.

The water-table rise of period 1 and the lowering of period 3 are attributed to predominantly local causes, while the groundwater fluctuations during period 2 are probably climate-related. The final water-level increase reflects the influence of Holocene relative sea-level rise.  相似文献

Management of water, regionally, nationally and globally will continue to be a priority and complex undertaking. In riverine systems, biotic components like flora and fauna play critical roles in filtering water so it is available for human use and consumption. Preservation of ecosystems and associated ecosystem functions is therefore vital. In highly regulated large river basins, natural ecosystems are often supported through provision of environmental flows. Flow delivery, however, should be underpinned by rigorous monitoring to identify and prioritise biotic water requirements. Currently, large-scale monitoring solutions are scaled from remote sensing data via measurement of field evapotranspiration for woody tree vegetation species. However, as there is generally a mismatch between field data collection area and remote sensing pixel size, new methods are required to proportion tree evapotranspiration based on tree fractional canopy area per pixel. We present a novel method to derive tree fractional canopy cover (FTCC) at 20 m resolution in semi-arid and arid floodplain areas. The method employs LiDAR as a canopy area field measurement proxy (10 m resolution). We used Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 (radar and multispectral imagery) in a Random Forest analysis, undertaken to develop a predictive FTCC model trained using LiDAR for two regions in the Murray–Darling Basin. A predictor model combining the results of both regions was able to explain between 71%–85% of FTCC variation when compared to LiDAR FTCC when output in 10% increments. Development of this method underpins the advancement of woody vegetation monitoring to inform environmental flow management in the Murray–Darling Basin. The method and fine scale outputs will also be of value to other catchment management concerns such as altered catchment water yields related to bushfires and as such has application to water management worldwide.  相似文献

World-wide many cetaceans drown incidentally in fishing nets. To reduce the unwanted bycatch in gillnets, pingers (acoustic alarms) have been developed that are attached to the nets. In the European Union, pingers will be made compulsory in some areas in 2005 and in others in 2007. However, pingers may effect non-target marine fauna such as fish. Therefore in this study, the effects of seven commercially-available pingers on the behaviour of five North Sea fish species in a large tank were quantified. The species tested were: sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), pout (Trisopterus luscus), thicklip mullet (Chelon labrosus), herring (Clupea harengus), and cod (Gadus morhua). The fish were housed as single-species schools of 9-13 individuals in a tank. The behaviour of fish in quiet periods was compared with their behaviour during periods with active pingers. The results varied both between pingers and between fish species. Sea bass decreased their speed in response to one pinger and swam closer to the surface in response to another. Thicklip mullet swam closer to the bottom in response to two pingers and increased their swimming speed in response to one pinger. Herring swam faster in response to one pinger, and pout and cod (close relatives) showed no behavioural responses to any of the pingers. Of the seven pingers tested, four elicited responses in at least one fish species, and three elicited no responses. Whether similar responses would be elicited in these fish species in the wild, and if so, whether such responses would influence the catch rate of fisheries, cannot be derived from the results of this study. However, the results indicate the need for field studies with pingers and fish. Based on the small number of fish species tested, the present study suggests that the higher the frequency of a pinger, the less likely it is to affect the behaviour of marine fish.  相似文献

While remote sensing is able to provide spatially explicit datasets at regional to global scales, extensive application to date has been found only in the reporting and verification of ecosystem carbon fluxes under the Kyoto Protocol. One of the problems is that new remote sensing datasets can be used only with models or data assimilation schemes adapted to include a data input interface dedicated to the type and format of these remote sensing datasets. In this study, soil water index data (SWI), derived from the ERS scatterometer (10-daily time period with a spatial resolution of 50 km), are integrated into the ecosystem carbon balance model C-Fix to assess 10-daily Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) patterns of Europe from the remote sensing perspective on an approximate 1-by-1 km2 pixel scale using NDVI-AVHRR data. The modeling performance of NEP obtained with and without the assimilation of remotely sensed soil moisture data in the carbon flux model C-Fix is evaluated with EUROFLUX data. Results show a general decrease of the RRMSE of up to 11 with an average of 3.46. C-Fix is applied at the European scale to demonstrate the potential of this ecosystem carbon flux model, based on remote sensing inputs. More specifically, the strong impact of soil moisture on the European carbon balance in the context of the Kyoto Protocol (anthropogenic carbon emissions) is indicated at the country level. Results suggest that several European countries shift from being a carbon sink (i.e., NEP > 1) to being a carbon source (i.e., NEP < 0) whether or not short-term water availability (i.e., soil moisture) is considered in C-Fix NEP estimations.  相似文献

Summary The redistribution of kinetic energy in the 500mbar level is studied for 1966 as well as for 1967. The total kinetic energy is split up in three parts: a) the energy due to the mean flow, b) the energy due to eddies with a period of time longer than a month and c) the energy due to eddies with a period of time less than a month but longer than one day.The transport of these energies takes place in formally three different ways, namely by the mean flow, by longperiod and shortperiod eddies (or monthly and daily eddies).Both the transports in zonal and meridional direction are studied. As will be shown in section 2, this yields 16 transportterms. It turns out that for the 500mbar level in the region from 100°W to 30°E and from 30°N to 65°N and based on geostrophic approximated winds: a) the longperiod eddies are important, b) the role of the longperiod eddies as well as the role of the shortperiod eddies decreases with increasing latitude and c) the zonal transports and the divergence of those transports are mostly larger than the meridional transports, and the divergence of the meridional transports.

Zusammenfassung Die Verteilung der kinetischen Energie im 500mb-Niveau wird für die Jahre 1966 und 1967 untersucht. Die gesamte kinetische Energie wird dabei in drei Teile zergliedert: a) die kinetische Energie der mittleren Strömung, b) die Energie aus länger als einen Monat andauernden Wirbeln und c) die Energie aus kürzer als einen Monat, aber länger als einen Tag andauernden Wirbelelementen.Der Transport dieser Energien erfolgt formal auf drei verschiedenen Wegen, nämlich durch die mittlere Strömung, durch lang- und kurzperiodige Wirbelelemente (Turbulenzelemente von Monatsdauer bzw. von Tagesdauer). Es werden die Transporte in zonaler und in meridionaler Richtung untersucht; daraus ergeben sich 16 Transportterme. Für die Region von 100°W bis 30°E und 30°N bis 65°N erweist sich unter Zugrundelegung geostrophisch approximierter Winde, a) daß langperiodige Wirbel von Bedeutung sind, b) daß die Bedeutung langperiodiger wie auch kurzperiodiger Wirbelelemente mit zunehmender geographischer Breite abnimmt und c) daß die zonalen Transporte und ihre Divergenz meistens größer sind als die meridionalen Transporte und die Divergenz meridionaler Transporte.

In mylonitic gneisses of the Saint-Barthelemy Massif in the French Pyrenees, evidence was found that ultramylonite bands developed by ductile deformation of pseudotachylyte.In the gneiss a mylonitic shape fabric was produced by a continuous structural event during retrogression from amphibolite to upper greenschist facies. Decrease in temperature caused gradual hardening in the gneiss which led to the development of pseudotachylyte bands by intermittent seismic slip. These acted as weak zones in which ductile deformation was concentrated. A microstructure typical of ultramylonite was produced in these deformed pseudotachylyte bands.  相似文献
