We present Doppler imaging and a Balmer line analysis of the weak-line T Tauri star TWA 17. Spectra were taken in 2006 with the University College London Echelle Spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Using least-squares deconvolution to improve the effective signal-to-noise ratio, we produced a Doppler map of the surface spot distribution. This shows similar features to maps of other rapidly rotating T Tauri stars, i.e. a polar spot with more spots extending out of it down to the equator.
In addition to the photospheric variability, the chromospheric variability was studied using the Balmer emission. The mean Hα profile has a narrow component consistent with rotational broadening and a broad component extending out to 220 km s−1. The variability in Hα suggests that the chromosphere has at least one slingshot prominence  3 R *  above the surface.  相似文献

Analysis of a suite of 2-D seismic reflection profiles reveals that the northwestern Sacramento Valley and eastern Coast Range foothills, northern California, are underlain by a system of blind, west-dipping thrust faults. Homoclinally east-dipping and folded Mesozoic marine forearc strata exposed along the western valley margin define the forelimbs of northeast-vergent fault-propagation folds developed in the hanging walls of the thrusts. Exhumed coherent blueschists of the accretionary complex and attenuated remnants of the ophiolitic forearc basement presently exposed in the eastern Coast Ranges are in the hanging wall of the blind thrust system, and have been displaced from their roots in the footwall. Deep, east-dipping magnetic reflectors in the footwall of the thrust system may be fragments of sheared, serpentinized and attenuated ophiolitic basement. Restoration of slip on the thrusts suggests that the Coast Range fault, which is the exposed structural contact between the coherent blueschists and attenuated ophiolite, originally dipped east and is associated with the east-dipping magnetic reflectors in the footwall. This interpretation of the reflection data is consistent with previous inferences about the deep structure in this region, and supports a two-stage model for blueschist exposure in the eastern Coast Ranges: (1) blueschist exhumation relative to the forearc basin by attenuation of the ophiolitic basement along the east-dipping Coast Range fault system in late Cretaceous; (2) blueschists, attenuated ophiolite, and forearc strata all were subsequently uplifted and folded in the hanging wall of the blind thrust system beginning in latest Cretaceous–early Tertiary. The blind thrust system probably rooted in, and was antithetic to, the east-dipping subduction zone beneath the forearc region. Active transpressional plate motion in western California is locally accommodated, in part, by reactivation of blind thrust faults that originally developed during the convergent regime.  相似文献

Snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) is an important coastal fish species in New Zealand for a variety of reasons, but the large amount of research conducted on snapper has not been reviewed. Here, we review life history information and potential threats for snapper in New Zealand. We present information on snapper life history, defining stages (eggs and larvae, juvenile and adult), and assess potential threats and knowledge gaps. Overall we identify six key points: 1. post-settlement snapper are highly associated with certain estuarine habitats that are under threat from land-based stressors. This may serve as a bottleneck for snapper populations; 2. the largest knowledge gaps relate to the eggs and larvae. Additional knowledge may help to anticipate the effects of climate change, which will likely have the greatest influence on these early life stages; 3. ocean acidification, from land-based sources and from climate change, may be an important threat to larval snapper; 4. a greater understanding of population connectivity would improve certainty around the sustainability of fishery exploitation; 5. the collateral effects of fishing are likely to be relevant to fishery productivity, ecosystem integrity and enduser value; 6. our understanding of the interrelationships between snapper and other ecosystem components is still deficient.  相似文献

We estimated population abundance of New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) pups on Bench Island off Stewart Island, New Zealand seven times between 1996 and 2012. Overall, there was a 29% increase in pup abundance from 1996 to 2012 at the Main Beach colony, corresponding to a mean annual growth rate of 1.6% and a doubling time of approximately 40 years. At the Sprat Point colony, there was an overall increase of 29% between 2003 and 2012 corresponding to a mean annual growth rate of 2.9% and a doubling time of approximately 25 years. The area occupied by both colonies has also increased. In 2006, we surveyed East Beach and counted a total of 201 pups. We obtained traditional ecological knowledge of fur seal distribution and breeding status from local Māori for 46 locations around Stewart Island, 36 of which have not been surveyed since Wilson in 1971–1974; this supports an expansion of fur seal presence and breeding areas in the region in the last 41 years.  相似文献

Carbon sequestration in Africa: The land tenure problem   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The prospect of using tropical forest projects to sequester significant amounts of atmospheric carbon as one mitigation approach to climate change has received considerable attention. In the Kyoto Protocol, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) aspires to make such projects viable. This article examines the prospect of these projects in Africa, and argues that land tenure is much more than just a set of variables to be changed, and that instead it exists as a prohibitive obstacle to the implementation of afforestation and reforestation sequestration approaches. Five primary tenure problems are examined: (1) the disconnect between customary and statutory land rights, (2) legal pluralism, (3) tree planting as land claim, (4) expansion of treed areas in smallholder land use systems, and (5) the difficulty of using the ‘abandoned land’ category. The pervasiveness of these tenurial issues mean that the prospects for successfully implementing afforestation and reforestation projects in Africa are in reality quite weak. The current project approach to carbon storage in Africa needs to be significantly realigned with African reality in order for sequestration expectations to be practical.  相似文献

While extensively occurring natural resources play a fundamental role in the survival and recovery of postwar populations, their management is not presently part of the operational priorities in a peace process. Dependence on naturally occurring food, fuel, water, secure locations, and products that can be obtained and sold quickly for dislocated, war-weary populations is a primary approach to postwar livelihoods. The peace process, however, focuses on the logistical and institutional aspects of security, demobilization, reintegration and humanitarian efforts. The result is profound degradation of the spatially extensive resources necessary for longer-term recovery. The primary reason for the inattention to resource degradation in a peace process is that conventional conservation approaches do not fit with the priorities of a peace process or attend to the immediate needs of a postwar population; designed as they are for stable, peaceful settings. This article focuses on the need to derive postwar natural resource management approaches which can work with the in-place priorities of a peace process. Four such approaches are suggested, with successful examples from specific countries.

香山西岩体是东天山地区发现的唯一的一个铜镍-钛铁复合型含矿岩体,前人对香山西铜镍-钛铁矿床成因认识一直存在争议。本次通过矿相学研究结合电子探针分析,在香山西铜镍矿石中发现了铜镍硫化物与钛铁氧化物共生的现象,并首次测定了香山西钛铁辉长岩的SIMS锆石U-Pb年龄为278.6±1.8Ma(MSWD=1.2),与前人测得香山中岩体角闪辉长岩的锆石U-Pb年龄基本一致,证实了香山西铜镍矿与钛铁矿为共生关系,两者空间上渐变过渡。岩石地球化学研究表明,香山岩体(包括钛铁辉长岩)为同源岩浆经结晶分异作用形成的一套镁铁-超镁铁质岩体,具有拉斑玄武质岩浆分异演化趋势,并且经历了与地壳物质的混染。与中段和东段岩石相比,香山西辉长岩类具有相对高的REE、SiO2(平均48.99%)、K2O+Na2O(平均3.43%)、TiO2(平均1.26%)和明显低的Mg#值(平均62.4),表现出分异演化程度高于中段和东段。经反演得出香山岩体原始岩浆含MgO约10%,FeO约9%,TiO2约1.14%,与同一成矿带内其它含铜镍矿岩体原始岩浆成份相近,应为 普通的拉斑玄武质岩浆。因此,香山西钛铁矿床的形成机制可能是由普通的拉斑玄武质岩浆,经历了较高程度的分异演化导致钛铁氧化物在残余岩浆中逐步富集,岩浆在上升侵位过程中与地壳物质的混染,不仅促使了岩浆中硫化物的饱和,同时提高了岩浆体系的氧逸度,进而促使了钛铁氧化物结晶沉淀。对香山西钛铁矿床成因研究的启示意义在于,除我国攀西地区高钛的玄武质岩浆外,普通的拉斑玄武质岩浆,在有利的分异演化条件下(如初始低氧逸度、相对高度的分异演化、后期与地壳物质混染)也有可能形成大型钛铁矿床。  相似文献
