This study focused on the development of a seasonal data set of the Hg air/surface exchange over soils associated with low Hg containing surfaces in a deciduous forest in the southern USA. Data were collected every month for 11 months in 2004 within Standing Stone State Forest in Tennessee using the dynamic flux chamber method. Mercury air/surface exchange associated with the litter covered forest floor was very low with the annual mean daytime flux being 0.4 ± 0.5 ng m−2 h−1 (n = 301). The daytime Hg air/surface exchange over the year oscillated between emission (81% of samples with positive flux) and deposition (19% of samples with negative flux). A seasonal trend of lower emission in the spring and summer (closed canopy) relative to the fall and winter (open canopy) was observed. Correlations were found between the air/surface exchange and certain environmental factors on specific days sampled but not collectively over the entire year. The very low magnitude of Hg air/surface exchange as observed in this study suggests that an improved methodology for determining and reporting emission fluxes is needed when the values of fluxes and chamber blanks are both very low and comparable. This study raises questions and points to a need for more research regarding how to scale the Hg air/surface exchange for surfaces with very low emissions.  相似文献

Mercury air/surface exchange was measured over litter-covered soils with low Hg concentrations within various types of forests along the eastern seaboard of the USA. The fieldwork was conducted at six forested sites in state parks in South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Maine from mid-May to early June 2005. The study showed that the Hg air/surface exchange was consistently very low and similar (overall daytime mean flux = 0.2 ± 0.9 ng m−2 h−1, n = 310, for all six sites monitored) with the various forest types. These flux values are comparable with those found in a year-long study in Tennessee (yearly daytime mean = 0.4 ± 0.5 ng m−2 h−1), but lower than many previous flux results reported for background soils. The Hg fluxes at all sites oscillated around zero, with many episodes of deposition (negative fluxes) occurring in both daytime and nighttime. While there were particular days showing significant correlations among the Hg air/surface exchange and certain environmental parameters, perhaps because of the low fluxes encountered, few significant correlations were found for any particular day of sampling between the Hg flux and environmental parameters such as solar radiation, soil temperature, air temperature (little variability seen), relative humidity, and ambient air Hg concentrations. Factors driving the Hg exchange as previously found for enriched soils may not hold for these background litter-covered forest soils. The results suggest that spatial variations of the Hg air/surface exchange were small among these different forest types for this particular time of year.  相似文献

Relative mercury concentrations are enriched by a factor of 10 in decomposition products of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, compared with living plant tissue. The mercury content of mangrove detritus is 3 to 30 times higher than values reported for marine phytoplankton. Detritus formation represents a natural mechanism for mercury enrichment in estuarine food chains.  相似文献

When performing landslide susceptibility mapping of rotational slides in fine grained soils, slope algorithms found in common GIS software have two major shortcomings. Firstly, these types of terrain algorithms only consider the slope angle at the surface. Secondly, the algorithm is local by its design i.e. it only considers neighbouring pixels. Due to the behaviour of a retrogressive rotational landslide, it would be more preferable to consider slope information as a predetermined cross-section angle from the base of the slope. This paper presents a new method using shadow casting algorithms for preliminary landslide susceptibility mapping in cohesive soils. A case study from western Sweden is also presented.  相似文献

In Part I of this paper, we derived a set of data tapers designed to minimize the spectral leakage of decaying sinusoids immersed in white noise. Multiplying a long-period seismic record by K of these tapers creates K time series. A decaying sinusoid is fit to these K time series in the frequency domain at a number of chosen frequencies by a least-squares procedure. The fit is tested at each frequency using a statistical F -test. In Part I, we demonstrated that the multiple-taper method is a more sensitive detector of decaying sinusoids than the conventional direct spectral-estimate.
In this paper, we present a number of extensions to the multiple-taper method. We explain how the technique can be modified to estimate the harmonic components of records containing gaps. We discuss how sinusoids at frequencies between FFT bin frequencies can be detected, and how this method can be combined with conventional multi-station stacking procedures.  相似文献

The Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is the most significant invasive alien marine species in South Africa and, although not normally found subtidally, has recently been observed colonising heads and stipes of the kelp species Ecklonia maxima in False Bay. We quantified this invasion and explored its ecological implications. Transects laid across kelp beds revealed that 10.34% of kelp individuals surveyed bore canopy mussels, with kelp heads (10.07%) being far more commonly infected than stipes (0.27%). Twenty kelp individuals with infected heads and 20 with infected stipes were separately collected for more-detailed examination. Wet mass of mussels on these kelp heads ranged from 2.5 to 2 462 g (median 86.4 g, interquartile range 14.8–353.8 g) and that of mussels on the stipes from 7.6 to 3 492 g (median 595.5 g, interquartile range 194.0–955.0 g). Mussel clumps consisted mostly of individuals <40 mm in length. Mussel clumps supported a rich biota of 80 invertebrate and 13 algal species. Larger clumps supported more epibiotic species, and those on stipes more species than those of comparable mass on kelp heads. The mussels and their associated epibiotic species negatively affected kelp buoyancy, but rarely enough to overcome natural buoyancy. Some kelp individuals that had been toppled by the weight of mussels and their epibiotic species, however, were encountered in situ. Implications of this invasion include large increases in animal biomass and species richness in the kelp canopy, plus reductions in kelp buoyancy and increased hydrodynamic drag on infected kelps, increasing their probability of being uprooted. Uprooted kelp individuals can raft long distances, potentially transporting both native and alien species to distant sites.  相似文献

A beam of collisionless plasma is injected along a longitudinal magnetic field into a region of curved magnetic field. Two unpredicted phenomena are observed: The beam becomes deflected in the directionopposite to that in which the field is curved, and itcontracts to a flat slab in the plane of curvature of the magnetic field.The plasma is produced by a conical theta-pinch gun and studied by means of high speed photography, electric and magnetic probes, ion analyser, and spectroscopy.The plasma beam is collisionless and its behaviour is, in principle, understood on the basis of gyro-centre drift theory. A fraction of the transverse electric fieldE=–v×B, which is induced when the beam enters the curved magnetic field, is propagated upstream and causes the reverse deflection byE×B drift. The upstream propagation of the transverse electric field is due to electron currents.The circuit aspect on the plasma is important. The transverse polarization current in the region with the curved field connects to a loop of depolarization currents upstream. The loop has limited ability to carry current because of the collisionless character of the plasma; curlE is almost zero and electric field components arise parallel to the magnetic field. These play an essential role, producing runaway electrons, which have been detected. An increased electron temperature is observed when the plasma is shot into the curved field. Runaway electrons alone might propagate the electric field upstream in case the electron thermal velocity is insufficient.The phenomenon is of a general character and can be expected to occur in a very wide range of ensities. The lower density limit is set by the condition for self-polarization,nm i / 0 B 2 1 or, which is equivalent,c 2/v A 2 ;1, wherec is the velocity of light, andv A the Alfvén velocity. The upper limit is presumably set by the requirement e e 1.The phenomenon is likely to be of importance, for example, for the injection of plasma into magnetic bottles and in space and solar physics. The parameterization of surface heat-flux variability in urban areas relies on adequate representation of surface characteristics. Given the horizontal resolutions (e.g. $\approx $ 0.1–1 km) currently used in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, properties of the urban surface (e.g. vegetated/built surfaces, street-canyon geometries) often have large spatial variability. Here, a new approach based on Urban Zones to characterize Energy partitioning (UZE) is tested within a NWP model (Weather Research and Forecasting model; WRF v3.2.1) for Greater London. The urban land-surface scheme is the Noah/Single-Layer Urban Canopy Model (SLUCM). Detailed surface information (horizontal resolution 1 km) in central London shows that the UZE offers better characterization of surface properties and their variability compared to default WRF-SLUCM input parameters. In situ observations of the surface energy fluxes and near-surface meteorological variables are used to select the radiation and turbulence parameterization schemes and to evaluate the land-surface scheme and choice of surface parameters. For radiative fluxes, improved performance (e.g. $>$ 25 W m $^{-2}$ root-mean-square error reduction for the net radiation) is attained with UZE parameters compared to the WRF v3.2.1 default for all three methods from the simplest to the most detailed. The UZE-based spatial fluxes reproduce a priori expectations of greater energy storage and less evaporation in the dense city centre compared to the residential surroundings. Problems in Noah/SLUCM partitioning of energy between the daytime turbulent fluxes are identified with the overestimation of the turbulent sensible heat and underestimation of the turbulent latent heat fluxes.  相似文献
