The geology of Portreath preserved both in the natural outcrop and as building stones is assessed as a potential resource for visiting educational groups. Portreath is a former mining port, its expansion and historical development being closely associated with local and regional geology. A fieldwork programme and complementary literature search revealed that this location contains a wide range of accessible rock types suitable for student analysis.  相似文献

In this paper we explore the optimum assimilation of high‐resolution data into numerical models using the example of topographic data provision for flood inundation simulation. First, we explore problems with current assimilation methods in which numerical grids are generated independent of topography. These include possible loss of significant length scales of topographic information, poor representation of the original surface and data redundancy. These are resolved through the development of a processing chain consisting of: (i) assessment of significant length scales of variation in the input data sets; (ii) determination of significant points within the data set; (iii) translation of these into a conforming model discretization that preserves solution quality for a given numerical solver; and (iv) incorporation of otherwise redundant sub‐grid data into the model in a computationally efficient manner. This processing chain is used to develop an optimal finite element discretization for a 12 km reach of the River Stour in Dorset, UK, for which a high‐resolution topographic data set derived from airborne laser altimetry (LiDAR) was available. For this reach, three simulations of a 1 in 4 year flood event were conducted: a control simulation with a mesh developed independent of topography, a simulation with a topographically optimum mesh, and a further simulation with the topographically optimum mesh incorporating the sub‐grid topographic data within a correction algorithm for dynamic wetting and drying in fixed grid models. The topographically optimum model is shown to represent better the ‘raw’ topographic data set and that differences between this surface and the control are hydraulically significant. Incorporation of sub‐grid topographic data has a less marked impact than getting the explicit hydraulic calculation correct, but still leads to important differences in model behaviour. The paper highlights the need for better validation data capable of discriminating between these competing approaches and begins to indicate what the characteristics of such a data set should be. More generally, the techniques developed here should prove useful for any data set where the resolution exceeds that of the model in which it is to be used. On North Harris and southeast Lewis a weathering limit separates glacially-moulded bedrock on low ground from frost-shattered bedrock and blockfields on high plateaux. Analysis of the depths of horizontal stress-release joints demonstrates significant contrasts in bedrock weathering above and below this boundary, and the survival of gibbsite only in soils above the weathering limit indicates that it represents the upper limit of Late Devensian glacial erosion. The weathering limit declines regularly in altitude on either side of the former ice shed, and is therefore interpreted as a periglacial trimline defining the upper limit of a locally-nourished ice mass at its maximum extent, rather than a former thermal boundary between protective cold-based and erosive warm-based ice. Calculated basal shear stress values are consistent with this interpretation. The configuration of the trimline indicates that at the last glacial maximum the area supported an ice cap that achieved a maximum altitude of ca. 700 m above present sea level and declined in altitude to the west-northwest and east-southeast at an average gradient of ca. 20 m km?1. Extrapolation of the dimensions of this ice cap suggests that it terminated ca. 7–10 km west of the present coast of Harris, and was confluent with mainland ice a short distance east of the present coastline.  相似文献

We experimentally investigated the phase relations of a peralkaline phonolitic dyke rock associated with the Ilímaussaq plutonic complex (South Greenland). The extremely evolved and iron-rich composition (magnesium number = 2, alkalinity index = 1.44, FeO* = 12 wt%) may represent the parental magma of the Ilímaussaq complex. This dyke rock is therefore perfectly suited for performing phase-equilibrium experiments, since in contrast to the plutonic rocks of the complex, no major cumulate formation processes complicate defining a reasonable starting composition. Experiments were carried out in hydrothermal rapid-quench cold-seal pressure vessels at P = 100 MPa and T = 950–750 °C. H2O contents ranging from anhydrous to H2O saturated (~5 wt% H2O) and varying fO2 (~ΔlogFMQ ?3 to +1; where FMQ represents the fayalite–magnetite–quartz oxygen buffer) were applied. Reduced and dry conditions lead to substantial crystallization of alkali feldspar, nepheline, hedenbergite-rich clinopyroxene, fayalite-rich olivine and minor amounts of ulvøspinel-rich magnetite, which represent the phenocryst assemblage of the natural dyke rock. Oxidized and H2O-rich conditions, however, suppress the crystallization of olivine in favor of magnetite and clinopyroxene with less or no alkali feldspar and nepheline formation. Accordingly, combined low fO2 and aH2O force the evolution of the residual melt toward decreasing SiO2, increasing FeO* and alkalinity index (up to 3.55). On the contrary, high fO2 and aH2O produce residual melts with relatively low FeO*, high SiO2 and a relatively constant alkalinity index. We show that variations of aH2O and fO2 lead to contrasting trends regarding the liquid lines of descent of iron-rich silica-undersaturated peralkaline compositions. Moreover, the increase in FeO* and alkalinity index (reduced and dry conditions) in the residual melt is an important prerequisite to stabilize late-magmatic minerals of the dyke rock, for example, aenigmatite (Na2Fe5TiSi6O20), coexisting with the most evolved melts at 750 °C. Contrary to what might be expected, experiments with high aH2O and interlinked high fO2 exhibit higher liquidus T’s compared with experiments performed at low aH2O and fO2 for experiments where magnetite is liquidus phase. This is because ulvøspinel-poor magnetite crystallizes at higher fO2 and has a higher melting point than ulvøspinel-rich magnetite, which is favored at lower fO2.  相似文献

Capping with layers of inert or adsorptive materials is used to control the release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH)in sediment but little is known about microbial degradation processes in these materials.A rich native microbial community inhabits the sediment bed,and capping media can influence enrichment and biodegradation activity of benthic microorganisms.The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of capping media(sand,organoclay,and powdered activated carbon[PAC])on microbial communities under oxic conditions typical of the capewater interface,where naphthalene degradation(model PAH)is likely to be maximized.Bench scale experiments compared naphthalene concentrations,nahAc biomarker abundance,microbial community composition,and cellular attachment in systems amended with adsorptive and non-adsorptive capping materials.Results indicate that activated carbon promoted and enhanced bioactivity;PAC treatments showed high biodegradation rates,nahAc biomarker levels,and attached biological growth consistent with enrichment of the PAHdegrading genus Pseudomonae.In contrast,sand did not enhance biological activity compared to media-free systems.Naphthalene strongly influenced microbial community composition at the species level in all treatments except organoclay,which promoted biological signatures commonly associated with impeding degradation activity.Data overall suggest that adsorptive capping materials can both promote(PAC)and inhibit(organoclay)bioactivity in the surficial layer of caps,indicating that media selection is critical to the design of bioactive capping systems.  相似文献

Most often, astronomers are interested in a source (e.g., moving, variable, or extreme in some colour index) that lies on a few pixels of an image. However, the classical approach in astronomical data processing is the processing of the entire image or set of images even when the sole source of interest may exist on only a few pixels of one or a few images. This is because pipelines have been written and designed for instruments with fixed detector properties (e.g., image size, calibration frames, overscan regions, etc.). Furthermore, all metadata and processing parameters are based on an instrument or a detector. Accordingly, out of many thousands of images for a survey, this can lead to unnecessary processing of data that is both time-consuming and wasteful. We describe the architecture and an implementation of sub-image processing in Astro-WISE. The architecture enables a user to select, retrieve and process only the relevant pixels in an image where the source exists. We show that lineage data collected during the processing and analysis of datasets can be reused to perform selective reprocessing (at sub-image level) on datasets while the remainder of the dataset is untouched, a difficult process to automate without lineage.  相似文献

Identification details of the 66 first-order selenodetic control points - i.e., points consisting of craters having diameters larger than 8 km - are given. The distribution of all 211 reference points of the network on the Blagg-Müller maps is also presented. The glaciomarine model for deglaciation of the Irish Sea basin suggests that the weight of ice at the last glacial maximum was sufficient to raise relative sea‐levels far above their present height, destabilising the ice margin and causing rapid deglaciation. Glacigenic deposits throughout the basin have been interpreted as glaciomarine. The six main lines of evidence on which the hypothesis rests (sedimentology, deformation structures, delta deposits, marine fauna, amino‐acid ratios and radiocarbon dates) are reviewed critically. The sedimentological interpretation of many sections has been challenged and it is argued that subglacial sediments are common rather than rare and that there is widespread evidence of glaciotectonism. Density‐driven deformation associated with waterlain sediments is rare and occurs where water was ponded locally. Sand and gravel deposits interpreted as Gilbert‐type deltas are similarly the result of local ponding or occur where glaciers from different source areas uncoupled. They do not record past sea‐levels and the ad hoc theory of ‘piano‐key tectonics’ is not required to explain the irregular pattern of altitudes. The cold‐water foraminifers interpreted as in situ are regarded as reworked from Irish Sea sediments that accumulated during much of the late Quaternary, when the basin was cold and shallow with reduced salinities. Amino‐acid age estimates used in support of the glaciomarine model are regarded as unreliable. Radiocarbon dates from distinctive foraminiferal assemblages in northeast Ireland show that glaciomarine sediments do occur above present sea‐level, but they are restricted to low altitudes in the north of the basin and record a rise rather than a fall in sea‐level. It is suggested here that the oldest dates, around 17 000 yr BP, record the first Late Devensian (Weichselian) marine inundation above present sea‐level.
