The rapid field response in March and April 1996 to diking-eruptive events on the Northern Gorda Ridge allowed the first detailed co-measurement of 3He, H2, and CH4 in plumes associated with a submarine eruption, and examination of the chemical transformation of these volatile species during aging of the plumes. The diking-eruptive event generated extensive event plumes with a low 3He/heat ratio of ∼0.4×10-12 cm3 STP gm-1 °C-1, while chronic plumes had 3He/heat ratios of 2.1–6.2×10-12 cm3 STP gm-1 °C-1. Hydrogen concentrations in the initial event plume (EP96A) reached a maximum value of 47 nM, 235 times that of ocean background concentration (0.2 nM). In contrast, roughly one month later H2 concentrations, although still elevated, had drastically dropped to 40 times background values. Methane concentrations in both event and chronic plume fluids were also elevated and similar to stable hydrothermal systems in unsedimented ridge environments, reaching a maximum value of 7 nM. The intense rapid interaction at very high temperatures of hydrothermal fluids with the host rock during dike intrusion or with seawater during extrusion of the basalt likely generated high, localized concentrations of H2. The data indicate, however, that maximum rates of H2 production during event plume formation could have lasted a few days at most. 相似文献

Abstract— Quantitative textural data for Northwest Africa (NWA) 032 and the LaPaz (LAP) mare basalt meteorites (LAP 02205, LAP 02224, LAP 02226, and LAP 02436) prvide constraints on their crystallization and mineral growth histories. In conjunction with whole‐rock and mineral chemistry, textural analysis provides powerful evidence for meteorite pairing. Petrographic observations and crystal size distribution (CSD) measurements of NWA 032 indicate a mixed population of slowly cooled phenocrysts and faster cooled matrix. LaPaz basalt crystal populations are consistent with a single phase of nucleation and growth. Spatial distribution patterns (SDP) of minerals in the meteorites highlight the importance of clumping and formation of clustered crystal frameworks in their melts, succeeded by continued nucleation and growth of crystals. This process resulted in increasingly poor sorting, during competition for growth, as the melt crystallized. Based on CSD and SDP data, we suggest a potential lava flow geometry model to explain the different crystal populations for NWA 032 and the LaPaz basalts. This model involves crystallization of early formed phenocrysts at hypabyssal depths in the lunar crust, followed by eruption and flow differentiation on the lunar surface. Lava flow differentiation would allow for formation of a cumulate base and facilitate variable cooling within the stratigraphy, explaining the varied textures and modal mineralogies of mare basalt meteorites. The model may also provide insight into the relative relationships of some Apollo mare basalt suites, shallow‐level crystal fractionation processes, and the nature of mare basalt volcanism over lunar history. 相似文献

Historically, carbonate spots have been identified as an indicator of gold mineralization throughout central Victoria, Australia.
However, the exact timing relationships between the growth of carbonates, development of deformation fabrics, and the introduction
of gold has only been determined in more recent times through isolated studies on individual gold deposits. Detailed examination
of the evolution of hydrothermal alteration associated with the Magdala gold deposit at Stawell recognized the fact that there
were at least two generations of carbonate growth, an early rounded ankerite phase that predated gold mineralization and a
later euhedral siderite phase coincident with gold mineralization. This pattern of carbonate growth is repeated in the majority
of significant gold deposits, including Bendigo and Ballarat, throughout central Victoria. Timing relationships within the
carbonates suggest that a fluid was introduced along bedding planes and early deformation fabrics prior to the main upright
folding events that significantly modified the original sedimentary basin. It is suggested that the early rounded carbonates
may have formed as a result of anaerobic oxidation of methane, derived from the sediments and advected along normal growth
faults within the sedimentary basin, through interaction with downward diffusing seawater sulfate. Although the growth of
the early carbonates is not related to gold mineralization, the change in the speciation of the carbonate during the later
carbonate event is critical and can be tracked using a simple geochemical index that can be used not only in areas of outcrop

Stream-sediment and soil geochemical data from the Upper and Lower Coastal Plains of South Carolina (USA) were studied to determine relationships between soils and stream sediments. From multi-element associations, characteristic compositions were determined for both media. Primary associations of elements reflect mineralogy, including heavy minerals, carbonates and clays, and the effects of groundwater. The effects of groundwater on element concentrations are more evident in soils than stream sediments. A “winnowing index” was created using ratios of Th to Al that revealed differing erosional and depositional environments. Both soils and stream sediments from the Upper and Lower Coastal Plains show derivation from similar materials and subsequent similar multi-element relationships, but have some distinct differences. In the Lower Coastal Plain, soils have high values of elements concentrated in heavy minerals (Ce, Y, Th) that grade into high values of elements concentrated into finer-grain-size, lower-density materials, primarily comprised of carbonates and feldspar minerals (Mg, Ca, Na, K, Al). These gradational trends in mineralogy and geochemistry are inferred to reflect reworking of materials during marine transgressions and regressions. Upper Coastal Plain stream-sediment geochemistry shows a higher winnowing index relative to soil geochemistry. A comparison of the 4 media (Upper Coastal Plain soils and stream sediments and Lower Coastal Plain soils and stream sediments) shows that Upper Coastal Plain stream sediments have a higher winnowing index and a higher concentration of elements contained within heavy minerals, whereas Lower Coastal Plain stream sediments show a strong correlation between elements typically contained within clays. It is not possible to calculate a functional relationship between stream sediment–soil compositions for all elements due to the complex history of weathering, deposition, reworking and re-deposition. The ability to achieve meaningful decreases in sediment loads to reservoirs requires a determination of the relative importance of sediment sources within the contributing basins. In an investigation of sources of fine-grained sediment (clay and silt) within the Perry Lake Basin in northeast Kansas, representative samples of channel-bank sources, surface-soil sources (cropland and grassland), and reservoir bottom sediment were collected, chemically analyzed, and compared. The samples were sieved to isolate the 〈63μt m fraction and analyzed for selected nutrients (total nitrogen and total phosphorus), organic and total carbon, 25 trace elements, and the radionuclide cesium-137 (^137Cs). On the basis of substantial and consistent compositional differences among the source types, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total organic carbon (TOC), and ^137Cs were selected for use in the estimation of sediment sources. To further account for differences in particle-size composition between the sources and the reservoir bottom sediment, constituent ratio and clay-normalization techniques were used. Computed ratios included TOC to TN, TOC to TP, and TN to TP. Constituent concentrations (TN, TP, TOC) and activities (^137Cs) were normalized by dividing by the percentage of clay. Thus, the sediment-source estimations involved the use of seven sediment-source indicators. Within the Perry Lake Basin, the consensus of the seven indicators was that both channel-bank and surface-soil sources were important in the Atchison County Lake and Banner Creek Reservoir subbasins, whereas channel-bank sources were dominant in the Mission Lake subbasin. On the sole basis of ^137Cs activity, surface-soil sources contributed the most free-grained sediment to Atchison County Lake, and channel-bank sources contributed the most fine-grained sediment to Banner Creek Reservoir and Mission Lake. Both the seven-indicator consensus and ^137Cs indicated that channelbank sources were dominant for Perry Lake and that channel-bank sources increased in importance with distance downstream in the basin. 相似文献

Quantifying human cancer risk arising from exposure to contaminated groundwater is complicated by the many hydrogeological,
environmental, and toxicological uncertainties involved. In this study, we used Monte Carlo simulation to estimate cancer
risk associated with tetrachloroethene (PCE) dissolved in groundwater by linking three separate models for: (1) reactive contaminant
transport; (2) human exposure pathways; and (3) the PCE cancer potency factor. The hydrogeologic model incorporates an analytical
solution for a one-dimensional advective–dispersive–reactive transport equation to determine the PCE concentration in a water
supply well located at a fixed distance from a continuous source. The pathway model incorporates PCE exposure through ingestion,
inhalation, and dermal contact. The toxicological model combines epidemiological data from eight rodent bioassays of PCE exposure
in the form of a composite cumulative distribution frequency curve for the human PCE cancer potency factor. We assessed the
relative importance of individual model variables through their correlation with expected cancer risk calculated in an ensemble
of Monte Carlo simulations with 20,000 trials. For the scenarios evaluated, three factors were most highly correlated with
cancer risk: (1) the microbiological decay constant for PCE in groundwater, (2) the linear groundwater pore velocity, and
(3) the cancer potency factor. We then extended our analysis beyond conventional expected value risk assessment using the
partitioned multiobjective risk method (PMRM) to generate expected-value functions conditional to a 1 in 100,000 increased
cancer risk threshold. This approach accounts for low probability/high impact outcomes separately from the conventional unconditional
expected values. Thus, information on potential worst-case outcomes can be quantified for decision makers. Using PMRM, we
evaluated the cost-benefit relationship of implementing several postulated risk management alternatives intended to mitigate
the expected and conditional cancer risk. Our results emphasize the importance of hydrogeologic models in risk assessment,
but also illustrate the importance of integrating environmental and toxicological uncertainty. When coupled with the PMRM,
models integrating uncertainty in transport, exposure, and potency constitute an effective risk assessment tool for use within

Research on soil fertility is presented in the context of runoff agriculture, a venerable farming system that has been used for millennia in arid to semiarid regions, where water is a major limiting resource for crop production. The agroecology of runoff farming was studied with the Zuni to evaluate nutrient and hydrologic processes, management, maize productivity, and soil quality in some of the oldest recognized fields in the United States. This ancient Southwest agriculture has functioned without conventional irrigation or fertilization by tapping into biogeochemical processes in natural watersheds connected to fields. Carefully placed fields are managed on alluvial fans and other valley margin landforms to intercept runoff and associated sediment and organic debris transported from adjoining forested uplands. We report on research to evaluate and link nitrogen and phosphorus, two key nutrients for crop production, in watershed, soil, and crop components of this agroecosystem. Nutrient data have been collected by observational and experimental methods for each component and the transport of nutrients from watershed to field to maize. The condition of Zuni agricultural soils suggests that their knowledge and management of soils contributed to effective conservation. This study and others indicate the need for further long‐term monitoring and experimental research on watersheds, runoff processes, field soils, and crops across a range of arid to semiarid ecosystems. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献
