Climate change, particularly due to the changed precipitation trend, can have a severe impact on soil erosion. The effect is more pronounced on the higher slopes of the Himalayan region. The goal of this study was to estimate the impact of climate change on soil erosion in a watershed of the Himalayan region using RUSLE model. The GCM (general circulation model) derived emission scenarios (HadCM3 A2a and B2a SRES) were used for climate projection. The statistical downscaling model (SDSM) was used to downscale the precipitation for three future periods, 2011–2040, 2041–2070, and 2071–2099, at large scale. Rainfall erosivity (R) was calculated for future periods using the SDSM downscaled precipitation data. ASTER digital elevation model (DEM) and Indian Remote Sensing data – IRS LISS IV satellite data were used to generate the spatial input parameters required by RUSLE model. A digital soil-landscape map was prepared to generate spatially distributed soil erodibility (K) factor map of the watershed. Topographic factors, slope length (L) and steepness (S) were derived from DEM. Normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from the satellite data was used to represent spatial variation vegetation density and condition under various land use/land cover. This variation was used to represent spatial vegetation cover factor. Analysis revealed that the average annual soil loss may increase by 28.38, 25.64 and 20.33% in the 2020s, 2050s and 2080s, respectively under A2 scenario, while under B2 scenario, it may increase by 27.06, 25.31 and 23.38% in the 2020s, 2050s and 2080s, respectively, from the base period (1985–2013). The study provides a comprehensive understanding of the possible future scenario of soil erosion in the mid-Himalaya for scientists and policy makers.  相似文献

R chondrites are a distinct group of chondritic meteorites with unique mineralogical and chemical compositions. They contain various types of Al-rich objects [Ca,Al-rich inclusions (CAIs), Al-rich chondrules and fragments], whose mineralogical compositions and classifications were previously determined by Rout and Bischoff (2008). Here, we report on the bulk compositions of 126 such Al-rich objects determined by broad-beam electron probe microanalysis. Most of the CAIs, except a few, are significantly altered by complex nebular and/or parent body processes and the determination of their pristine composition is difficult. We found that the simple concentric spinel-rich inclusions have high Al2O3 (21–72 wt%) correlated with their high modal spinel. The subgroup of simple concentric spinel-rich CAIs have a high Al2O3 (21–57 wt%) and also sometimes high FeO (up to 36 wt%), due to a high hercynitic component in the spinel. One simple concentric spinel- and hibonite-rich CAI H030/L, identified as a HAL-type CAI by isotopic studies reported elsewhere, has a highly refractory composition (Al2O3~72 wt%). Most of the simple concentric spinel- and fassaite-rich CAIs have consistently high CaO (~2.5–17 wt%) compared to other simple concentric spinel-rich inclusions group, where only some inclusions have high CaO (up to 15 wt%). Simple concentric spinel- and Na,Al-alteration product-rich CAIs are heavily altered and have high Na2O (up to ~12.5 wt%).The three analyzed fassaite-rich spherules have high CaO and Al2O3, and complex spinel- and fassaite-rich CAIs have high CaO (up to 23 wt%) and SiO2 (up to 41 wt%). Most of the complex spinel- and plagioclase-rich CAIs are altered and contain high amounts of secondary oligoclase. However, a few are less affected by secondary alteration and these are characterized by relatively high CaO (up to 24 wt%) and Al2O3 (18–33 wt%); complex spinel and Na,Al-alteration product-rich CAIs are similar to the concentric spinel- and Na,Al-alteration product-rich CAIs. Due to Fe- and alkali-metasomatism, the vast majority of the inclusions in this subgroup were heavily altered, either in a nebular or parent body environment. As a result of this alteration, they contain high FeO and Na2O+K2O+Cl.Almost all inclusions have a Ca/Al-ratio below the solar ratio. This suggests that significant Ca/Al fractionation occurred during the formation of most CAIs, most probably due to disequilibrium condensation of spinel prior to melilite. However, a distillation process cannot be ruled out for some CAIs in producing the spinel enrichment. Some porous and fine grained CAIs may have been produced by agglomeration of refractory dust rich in spinel and fassaite. The HAL-type CAI, H030/L, most likely formed by distillation, similar to most of the HAL-type inclusions. Phase equilibrium analysis, in the CMAS system, shows that the fassaite-bearing spherules most likely formed by metastable crystallization and disequilibrium processes. Al-rich chondrules are characterized by >10 wt% Al2O3, and most of these also have high FeO and Na2O. Considering their bulk compositions, their precursors seem to have been a mixture of a ferromagnesian chondrule component rich in olivine and an anorthite–spinel–pyroxene–nepheline-rich CAI component. The mineral assemblages of some of the less altered Al-rich chondrules conform to those predicted by phase equilibrium studies.  相似文献

Summary Three dimensional magneto-elastic equations pertaining to the problem of propagation of axial Rayleigh waves on the surface of elastic cylinder of isotropic material have been solved. Two cases have been considered — first, when the density varies linearly and second, when it varies inversely as the radius vector and frequency equations for both the cases have been obtained.  相似文献

Papandayan is an A-type active volcano located in the southern part of Garut Regency, about 70 km southeast of Bandung, Indonesia. Its earliest recorded eruption, and the most violent and devastating outburst, occurred in 1772. The latest eruptions occurred in the period from 11 November–8 December 2002, and consisted of phreatic, freatomagmatic, and magmatic types of eruption. During the latest eruption period, GPS surveys were conducted at several points inside and around the crater in a radial mode, using the reference point located at the Papandayan observatory, about 10 km from the crater. At the points closest to the erupting craters, GPS displacements up to a few decimeters were detected, whereas at the points outside the crater, the displacements were at the centimeter level. The magnitude of displacements observed at each point also showed a temporal variation according to the eruption characteristics. The results show that deformation during eruption tends to be local, e.g. just around the crater. The pressure source is difficult to be properly modeled from GPS results, due to the limited GPS data available and differences in topography, geological structure, and/or rheology related to each GPS station.  相似文献

Using MONTBLEX-90 mean velocity data, roughness lengths and drag coefficients are estimated at Jodhpur and Kharagpur. At Jodhpur, since the surface is not uniform the roughness length is estimated separately in three different subsectors within the range of prevailing wind directions and averages to 1.23 cm in the sector between 200° and 230° which is relatively flat with no obstacles on the ground. At Kharagpur, where the terrain is more nearly homogeneous, the average value (for all prevailing wind directions) is 1.94 cm. The drag coefficient CD at Jodhpur shows variation both with the roughness subsector and with wind speed, the average over all directions increasing rapidly as themean wind speed Ū10 at 10m height drops according to the power lawC D = 0.05 Ū 10 t-1.09 in trie range 0.5 < Ū10 < 7 m s−1. At Kharagpur, the drag coefficient is smaller than at Jodhpur by nearly 50% for the same range of wind speeds (> 3 ms−1).  相似文献

Parameterization of sensible heat and momentum fluxes as inferred from an analysis of tower observations archived during MONTBLEX-90 at Jodhpur is proposed, both in terms of standard exchange coefficientsC H andC D respectively and also according to free convection scaling. Both coefficients increase rapidly at low winds (the latter more strongly) and with increasing instability. All the sensible heat flux data at Jodhpur (wind speed at 10 m Ū10 < 8 ms−1) also obey free convection scaling, with the flux proportional to the ‘4/3’ power of an appropriate temperature difference such as that between 1 and 30 m. Furthermore, for Ū10 < 4 ms−1 the momentum flux displays a linear dependence on wind speed.  相似文献

Buffer/backfill material is an important engineering barrier in a deep geological repository of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). Its thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) performance is very important for the safe and stable operation of the HLW repository system. Natural graphite powder mixed with sodium bentonite forms a buffer/backfill material that can dissipate heat quickly and provide strong isolation. In this paper, the THM characteristics of bentonite–sand–graphite–polypropylene fiber (BSGF) mixtures, used as a buffer/backfill material, were studied through a series of laboratory tests. The influence of graphite and polypropylene fiber contents on thermal conductivity, swelling pressure, hydraulic conductivity, and strength properties of BSGF mixtures with different sand contents was analyzed. Experimental results indicated that the graphite content, the maximum graphite mesh number, and the initial dry density of bentonite–graphite mixtures influenced the thermal conductivity of bentonite–graphite mixtures. The addition of polypropylene fiber was found to enhance the shear strength and inhibit cracking without significantly affecting the expansivity, permeability, and thermal conductivity of the BSGF mixtures. This study provides a new buffer/backfill material that can improve the stability, functionality, and thermal efficiency of the HLW repository.

An investigation on quality of groundwater has been carried out in the river basin of Varaha located in Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh to find out the factors that are responsible for spatial variations of water vulnerability. The study area is underlain by the Precambrian rocks of Eastern Ghats over which the Recent Formations occur. Groundwater is a prime source for drinking and irrigation. The quality of groundwater is fresh and brackish with dominance of the latter. Groundwater samples are categorized into two major clusters A and B, using the dendrogram of cluster analyses. Out of these two major clusters, five sub-clusters I to V in the pre-monsoon season and six sub-clusters I to VI in the post-monsoon season are identified. The sub-clusters I to IV of pre-monsoon and I to V of post-monsoon seasons of the cluster A are characterized by less mineralized groundwater compared to those of V of pre-monsoon and VI of post-monsoon seasons of the cluster B, which represent highly mineralized groundwater. The low to high mineral content follows gradually from upstream to the downstream area, being higher in post-monsoon season in both the clusters A and B, depending upon the source, mineral dissolution, and precipitation, solubility and leaching of ions, ion exchange and adsorption processes. Spatial distributions of the sub-clusters give clues to understand the factors that cause variations of groundwater vulnerability at a specific site, vis-a-vis local and regional lithological and non-lithological influences. As a result, the quality of groundwater on a regional scale changes from Na+ > Mg2+ >Ca2+ > K+: HCO 3 ? > Cl? > SO 4 2? > NO 3 ? > F? in the cluster A to Na+ > Mg2+ >Ca2+ > K+: Cl? > HCO 3 ? > SO 4 2? > NO 3 ? > F? in the cluster B, following the topography. The classification of the area into the zones of relative groundwater vulnerability with respect to drinking water quality of the chemical composition of the sub-clusters helps the planners to identify the specific locations, where the inferior quality of groundwater can occur, for taking the remedial measures.  相似文献

Hydrogeochemical studies have been carried out in a coastal region, using multivariate statistical model, for better understanding the controlling processes that influence the aquifer chemistry. Two principal components (PC1 and PC2) are extracted from the data set of chemical variables (pH, TDS, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO 3 ? , Cl?, SO 4 2? , NO 3 ? and F?), which account for 79% of the total variation in the quality of groundwater. The PC1 (salinity controlled process) includes the concentrations of TDS, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl?, SO 4 2? and NO 3 ? , while the PC2 (alkalinity controlled process) comprises the concentrations of pH, HCO 3 ? and F?. The spatial distribution of PC scores identifies the locations of high salinity and alkalinity processes. The first process corresponds to the influences of geogenic, anthropogenic and marine sources, and the second one to the influence of water-soil-rock interaction. Thus, the present study shows the usefulness of multivariate statistical model as an effective means of interpretation of spatial controlling processes of groundwater chemistry.  相似文献
