The effect of solar radiation on the near-term rotation rate of Asteroid Itokawa via the YORP effect is predicted using the detailed shape model, rotation pole, mass estimate, and optical properties derived from the Hayabusa mission to Itokawa. Based on these estimates Itokawa is decelerating at a rate which will halve its rotation rate in only 50-90 thousand years, a large deceleration that should be detectable in a future appartion. The implications of such a large deceleration for Itokawa's past history are discussed and related to possible seismic shaking.  相似文献

Abstract Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) has been used to infer finite strain fabrics in plastically deformed rocks, but there are few studies of magnetic properties in fractured fault rocks. Changes in magnetic and fractal properties of fractured granites from the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University (DPRI) 500 m drilling core towards the Nojima Fault and of the well-foliated fault gouge are described. Fractal analysis of fractured granites shows that the fractal dimension ( D ) increases linearly toward the gouge zone of the fault. In weakly fractured granites ( D = 1.05–1.24), it was found that the degree of AMS correlates positively with the fractal dimension, suggesting a fracture-related magnetic fabric due to fracturing. In strongly fractured granites ( D = 1.25–1.50), weaker, nearly isotropic AMS is found, suggesting erasure by the fragmentation of the magnetic minerals. Within the fault gouge zone, an isotropic AMS fabric was found, as well as twofold increases in magnetic intensity and susceptibility. These changes reflect the production of new magnetite grains, subsequently confirmed by hysteresis studies, which suggests that fault gouge might be regarded as the source of the regional geomagnetic field contrast along active faults. Thus, AMS is clearly a potentially useful tool for inferring the fracturing texture of magnetic minerals in fractured rocks and detecting active faults from the high susceptibility contrast of fault gouge.  相似文献

During the 1929 activity of Hokkaido-Komagatake volcano, the Plinian eruption of a phenocryst-rich andesite was preceded by a small eruption of more mafic magma formed by magma mixing. A similar eruption sequence has been reported for some other eruptions (Pallister et al. 1996; Venezky and Rutherford 1997), suggesting that eruption of a mixed magma is a precursor of phenocryst-rich magmas. For the purpose of understanding the tapping processes of the phenocryst-rich magma chamber, we investigated the temporal variation in the erupted magma and estimated the viscosity and density of the end-member and mixed magmas with constraints drawn from petrography. For the precursory mixed magma we estimate 33dž vol.% phenocrysts, andesitic-dacitic melt composition, 3 wt.% H2O content, and temperature of 1040°C. In comparison, for the climactic, silicic end-member magma we estimate 48Dž vol.% phenocryst, high-silica rhyolitic melt, 3 wt.% H2O, and temperature of 950°C, respectively. The mafic end-member magma, which was not erupted, is thought to be an almost aphyric basaltic-andesitic magma, based on mass balance calculation of the phenocryst content. The proportion of the mafic end-member magma component in the mixed magma was calculated to be 20-40 wt.%. On the basis of these data, we estimate magma viscosities of 103.9, 106.9, and 102.0 Pa s for the mixed, silicic end-member, and mafic end-member magmas, respectively. The calculated density differences among these magmas are inconsequential when possible errors are considered. We calculate the minimum excess pressure required for dike propagation to be 31 MPa for the silicic end-member magma and 8 MPa for the mixed magma, using the estimated viscosity and dike propagation model of Rubin (1995). If we assume that excess pressure is limited by the wall rock strength of the magma chamber, excess pressure retainable in the magma chamber is less than ca. 20 MPa. This suggests that the mixed magma was able to ascend to the surface without freezing, whereas the viscous silicic end-member magma could not. The formation and precursory eruption of the mixed magma are, therefore, effective and necessary initiation processes for the phenocryst-rich, viscous magma eruption.  相似文献

Clinopyroxenes from various lithologic units in a single tholeiitic dolerite intrusion 50 m thick were analysed with the electron microprobe. Microphenocrysts of augite in the chilled marginal rock have the least scattered CaMgFe ratios, around Ca38Mg50Fe12, and lowest Ti/Al ratios, less than 1/4, of the augites examined; they crystallized prior to emplacement. The augites which crystallized in situ are more Fe-rich and have higher Ti/Al ratios, close to 1/2. Pigeonite started crystallizing later than augite and formed rims to augite crystals. Continuous zoning from augite to subcalcic augite as was previously reported by Benson (1944) for the same dolerite is not observed. Subcaloic ferroaugites, however, link augite and ferropigeonite in the outermost margins of pyroxenes in the later segregations. The small scale differentiation in situ gave rise to globules, veins, and pegmatoids, in which sector-zoning of augite is well developed. The {100} sectors are enriched in MgSiO3, FeSiO3, and MnSiO3 components relative to the {010} and the {110} sectors, and are accordingly depleted in other components. The protosite theory of sector-zoning formation proposed by Nakamura (1973) is further developed and the environment which favours the development of sector-zoning is discussed. The formation of augite rims around quartz-rich xenoliths and the compositional characteristics of the augites concerned are due to local high silica activities. Comments are made concerning some lunar pyroxenes in the light of the present study.  相似文献

Rare-earth elements and Ba in Khohar, Abee, Indarch, Atlanta, Jajh deh Kot Lalu, and Nakhla were determined accurately by isotope dilution technique; for Atlanta only, Fe (total), Mg and Ca were also determined. Khohar shows in two aliquants a strikingly large, positive anomaly for Ce. A fragment of Abee is outstanding in having a large positive Yb anomaly and a zigzag RE pattern. It is considered that the Yb anomaly is not necessarily associated with the zigzaggedness in question. Anyway, these facts corroborate our previous observations that abundances of Ce and/or Yb could be sometimes anomalous in meteoritic and lunar materials.Atlanta also has a significant negative Eu anomaly, similar to the Eu depletions observed in lunar basalts and Ca-poor achondrites by other workers. Besides, this enstatite chondrite has a RE pattern which indicates that this meteorite is cumulate-type (solid-type) material separated perhaps from a considerably fractionated melt. Accordingly, it is suggested that it is not always appropriate to classify this type II enstatite chondrite as “chondrite”. Two fragments from Abee and Atlanta show different RE patterns. It is also observed that Ba abundances are sometimes sporadically and irregularly high.  相似文献

A new method for obtaining from volcanic surface features the orientations of the principal tectonic stresses is applied to Aleutian and Alaskan volcanoes. The underlying concept for this method is that flank eruptions for polygenetic volcanoes can be regarded as the result of a large-scale natural magmafracturing experiment. The method essentially relies on the recognition of the preferred orientation of radial and parallel dike swarms, primarily using the distribution of monogenetic craters including flank volcanoes. Since dikes tend to propagate in a direction normal to the minimum principal stress (T-axis), the method primarily yields the direction of the maximum horizontal compression (MHC) of regional origin. The direction of the MHC may correspond to either the maximum (P-axis) or intermediate (B-axis) principal stress.The direction of MHC obtained at 20 volcanoes in the Aleutian arc coincides well with the direction of convergence between the Pacific and North American plates. This result provides evidence that in the island arc the inferred direction of MHC is parallel to the maximum principal tectonic stress. In the back-arc region, general E-W trends of MHC are obtained from seven volcanic fields on islands on the Bering Sea shelf and the mainland coast of Alaska. These volcanic fields consist mostly of clusters of monogenetic volcanoes of alkali basalt. In the back-arc region, the trends of MHC may correspond to an E-W intermediate, a vertical maximum, and a N-S minimum principal stress.Implications for the tectonics of island arcs and back-arc regions are: (1) volcanic belts of some island arcs, including the Aleutian arc, are under compressional deviatoric stress in the direction of plate convergence. It is improbable that such arcs would split along the volcanic axis to form actively spreading marginal basins. (2) This compressional stress at the arc, probably generated by underthrusting, appears to be transmitted across the entire arc structure, but is apparently replaced within several hundred kilometers by a stress system characterized by horizontal extension (tensional deviatoric stress) in the back-arc region. (3) The volcanoes associated with these two stress systems differ in type (polygenetic vs. monogenetic) and in the chemistry of their magmas (andesitic vs. basaltic). These differences and the regional differences in orientation of the principal tectonic stresses suggest that the back-arc stress system has its own source at considerable depth beneath the crust.Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory Contribution No. 2503.  相似文献

A few large distant seismic events of distinctly high signal frequency, designated HFT (high-frequency teleseismic) events, are observed yearly by the Apollo lunar seismic network. Their sources are located on or near the surface of the moon, leaving a large gap in seismic activity between the zones of HFT sources and deep moonquakes. No strong regularities are found in either their spatial or temporal distributions. Several working hypotheses for the identity of these sources have been advanced, but many characteristics of the events seem to favor a hypothesis that they are shallow moonquakes. Simultaneous observations of other lunar phenomena may eventually enable the determination of their true identity.  相似文献

Very few data on heat flow are available in the area around the aseismic front of the Japanese Islands. In order to remedy this situation, measurements of the terrestrial heat flow were made at three locations in the eastern part of Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Honshu, Japan. The observed values of heat flow were 37 mW/m2 (0.88 μcal/cm2·s) at Soma, 52 mW/m2 (1.25 μcal/cm2·s) at Kashima and 19 mW/m2 (0.46 μcal/cm2·s) at Naraha, respectively. These data partially fill the gaps in the terrestrial heat flow data on land in northeastern Honshu, Japan. These values are considerably lower than the average heat flow over the world, but agree well with the previous estimation for the area.  相似文献

Precise determination of REE and Ba abundances in three carbonaceous (Orgueil Cl, Murchison C2 and Allende C3) and seven olivine-bronzite chondrites were carried out by mass spectrometric isotope dilution technique. Replicate analyses of standard rock and the three carbonaceous chondrites demonstrated the high quality of the analyses (accuracies for REE are ±1–2 per cent). Certain carbonaceous chondrite specimens showed small positive irregularities in Yb abundance. The Yb ‘anomaly’ (approximately + 5 per cent relative to the average of 10 ordinary chondrites) in Orgueil may relate to high temperature components. The REE pattern of Guareña (H6) exhibits comparatively extensive fractionation (about factor 2) with a negative anomaly for Eu (17 ± 1 percent) compared to the average H chondrite. This could be interpreted in terms of extensive thermal metamorphism leading to melting.Apart from absolute abundance differences, there appears to be small but recognizable fractionation among the average relative REE abundances of Cl, E, H and L chondrites. However, individual chondrites within these groups showed more or less fractionated REE patterns relative to each other. The distinction between H and L chondrites was well demonstrated in Eu-Sm correlation curves and absolute abundance differences of REE and major elements.Si-normalized atomic ratios of the REE abundances in different kinds of chondrites to those in Orgueil (Cl) chondrite were 0.58 (E), 0.75 (H), 0.81 (L), 1.07 (C2) and 1.32 (C3).  相似文献

Based on the lunar data on lanthanides, U, Th, Ba, and Sr, the partition coefficients for fractional solidification were estimated for these elements. The resultant values suggest the removal of solids with perhaps pyroxenic composition. The partition coefficient for europium can be judged to be normal as divalent europium dominantly present in the melt. When we go back following the trend of fractionation of abundances, we can reach the stage where there is no europium anomaly and where the thorium concentration level is chondritic. It can be imagined that the material corresponding to this stage was the directly original lunar material system. As a possibility, a zone melting is thought to be a possible process for the derivation of that material from chondritic material. The chondrite-normalized lanthanide patterns for silicate materials of two stony-irons appear to provide us with an intriguing clue to this problem.  相似文献
