Edge waves on the New Zealand east coast

Tide gauge records from several New Zealand east coast ports show persistent oscillations in sea level with a period of 2.4–2.7 h. These are superimposed on local resonant oscillations, and appear to be associated with edge wave excitation on the continental shelf, possibly by meteorological disturbances. A shelf response is also excited by tsunamis.  相似文献

Current observations taken at depths between 630 and 830 m from the west coast South Island continental slope exhibit one‐ to four‐weekly periodicities superimposed on the semi‐diurnal tide. These variable flows at 630 m and otter large, longer‐timescale events have a significart onshore/offshore component of flow which leads to a similar transport of alongshore momentum and heat.  相似文献   

Dispersion and feeding of larval herring (Clupea harengus L.) in the Moray Firth during September 1985

A plume of herring larvae dispersing from a spawning site at Clythness in the Moray Firth (northern Scotland) was surveyed during early September 1985. Several cohorts of larvae were evident from the length distributions, and these were arranged in order of increasing length (age) towards the south-west. The spacing of cohort centres indicated a drift rate of 1–2 km day⁻¹.Calanoid copepod nauplii constituted the major proportion of the diet of larvae <10 mm sampled during the study. Cyclopoid copepod nauplii and gastropod veligers were not found in the diet although they were present in the water. The distribution of nauplii in the region was inversely correlated with the concentration of phytoplankton chlorophyll, and nauplii concentrations were above average in the vicinity of the herring spawning site. The drift trajectory of the herring larvae took them towards an area of high copepodite and adult copepod concentration—items which formed an increasing part of the diet of larger (older) larvae.  相似文献

Variations in the stratospheric ozone field inferred from Nimbus satellite observations

The ultraviolet Earth radiance data from the backscatter ultraviolet experiment on Nimbus 4 have been inverted to infer ozone profiles using a single Rayleigh scattering model. Two methods of solution give essentially the same results. Comparison of these profiles with simultaneous rocket sounding data shows satisfactory agreement at low and middle latitudes.Vertical cross-sections of ozone mixing ratio along the orbital tracks indicate that while the gross characteristics of the ozone field above 10 mb are under photochemical control, the influence of atmospheric motions can be found up to the 4 mb level.  相似文献

Detailed surveys of the crest of the East Pacific Rise at 6° and 11°S form the basis for estimates of sea-floor spreading rates of 8.2 and 8.3 cm/yr, respectively. These estimates are significantly higher than previous ones of 6.5 to 7.5 cm/yr. The high quality of the magnetic profile at 6°S allows identification of shorter magnetic events such as the two Olduvai events of Cox. DSDP drill-hole data indicate that the present spreading rates have persisted throughout the Cenozoic.  相似文献

Yi-Fu Tuan's cognitive theory of the construction of place suggests the need for a higher level of resolution in research on American local vernacular regions. A survey-based case study of the Allentown-Bethlehem area demonstrates that municipal data can substantially refine an existing county-based delimitation by revealing previously undocumented regions and subregions, areas with mixed regional identity, and areas lacking regional identity. The resulting delimitations of subcounty vernacular regions are sufficiently precise to disclose a striking correspondence with area school districts.  相似文献
