In horizontally layered soils of different electrical properties, electrical potential distribution becomes complex and the
obtained resistivity data may be limited in reflecting the actual soil profile. Thus the objective of this study was to identify
the factors that affect resistivity measurement on the cone penetrometer and further investigate the sensitivity of measured
resistivity to different types and concentrations of contaminants at the subsurface level. First, a theoretical resistivity
equation was derived to provide a means of computing the geometric factor. The effective volume of measurement on the cone
penetrometer was investigated and laboratory soil box tests verified the dominance of partially high resistivity regions within
the effective volume of measurement over the apparent resistivity. Such effect was found to lead to possible discrepancies
between the recorded resistivity data and the actual depth of measurement. Measurements on contaminated soil layers indicated
that resistivity cones are efffective in delineating inorganic contaminants in soils of high water contents, and detecting
NAPLs floating above the groundwater table provided that soils adjacent to the plume are not dry of water.

The atmospheric mass density of the upper atmosphere from the spherical Starlette satellite’s Precise Orbit Determination
is first derived with Satellite Laser Ranging measurements at 815 to 1115 km during strong solar and geomagnetic activities.
Starlette’s orbit is determined using the improved orbit determination techniques combining optimum parameters with a precise
empirical drag application to a gravity field. MSIS-86 and NRLMSISE-00 atmospheric density models are compared with the Starlette
drag-derived atmospheric density of the upper atmosphere. It is found that the variation in the Starlette’s drag coefficient
above 800 km corresponds well with the level of geomagnetic activity. This represents that the satellite orbit is mainly perturbed
by the Joule heating from geomagnetic activity at the upper atmosphere. This result concludes that MSIS empirical models strongly
underestimate the mass density of the upper atmosphere as compared to the Starlette drag-derived atmospheric density during
the geomagnetic storms. We suggest that the atmospheric density models should be analyzed with higher altitude acceleration
data for a better understanding of long-term solar and geomagnetic effects. 相似文献

Above- and below-ground productivities and tissue N content were measured monthly to quantify N incorporation to sustain eelgrass growth in Koje Bay on the south coast of Korea from January to December 2002. N acquisition was also estimated through measurements of N uptake kinetics, tissue biomass, and in situ inorganic N concentrations in water column and sediments. Above- and below-ground productivities were highest in summer and lowest in late fall and winter. Leaf tissue N content was highest in December and lowest in July, while rhizome tissue N content was highest in October and lowest in April. Estimated monthly N incorporation by leaf tissues based on the leaf productivity and N content ranged from 0.4 g N m?2 month?1 in November to 2.0 g N m?2 month?1 in May. N incorporation by below-ground tissues ranged from 0.1 g N m?2 month?1 in February to 0.2 g N m?2 month?1 in October. Annual whole plant N incorporation was 14.5 g N m?2 y?1, and N incorporation by leaf tissues accounted for about 87 % of total N incorporation. Maximum uptake rate (V max ) and half saturation constant (K m ) of leaf NH4 + uptake were significantly lower than those of root NH4 + uptake. Above- and below-ground biomass ranged from 20.8 g DW m?2 and 8.6 g DW m?2 in winter to 350.0 g DW m?2 and 81.3 g DW m?2 in spring, respectively. NH4 + concentrations varied from 0.2 to 4.3 mM in water column and from 93.0 to 551.7 mM in sediment pore water. Based on these measurements, annual N acquisition by root tissues contributed slightly higher than that by leaf tissues to total plant N acquisition. During winter, monthly leaf N acquisition was lower than monthly leaf N incorporation. A stability analysis of reinforced foundation soil is presented in this paper. A method based on the discrete element method (DEM) is suggested for calculating the bearing capacity on strip footings over multilayer soils reinforced with a horizontal layer of geosynthetics. The proposed method can estimate the ultimate bearing capacity and the distribution of tensile force developed in the geosynthetics of the footing system by Winkler springs to account for the compatibility between soil blocks and tensile elements to consider the tensile behavior between soil and geosynthetics. For footings on various multilayer soils with or without reinforcement of geosynthetics, the results of the method were compared to the field test results as well as to those obtained by various methods proposed by other researchers. 相似文献

This study investigates recent climate change over the Arctic and its link to the mid-latitudes using the ERA-Interim global atmospheric reanalysis data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF). Since 1979, sub- stantial surface warming, associated with the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gases, has occurred over the Arctic. The great- est warming in winter has taken place offshore in the Kara-Barents Sea, and is associated with the increase in turbulent heat fluxes from the marginal ice zone. In contrast to the marked warming over the Arctic Ocean in winter, substantial cooling appears over Siberia and eastern Asia, linked to the reduction of Arctic sea ice during the freezing season (September-March). However, in summer, very little change is observed in surface air temperature over the Arctic because increased radiative heat melts the sea ice and the amount of turbulent heat gain from the ocean is relatively small. The heat stored in the upper ocean mixed layer in summer with the opening of the Arctic Ocean is released back to the atmosphere as turbulent heat fluxes during the autumn and through to the following spring. This warming of the Arctic and the reduced sea ice amplifies surface cooling over Siberia and eastern Asia in winter. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the structural changes that macrozoobenthic communities underwent as a result of the annual summer hypoxia at the northern part of Gamak Bay, Korea. During this study period, summer hypoxia occurred at the northern part of Gamak Bay in July. Under hypoxic conditions, both the number of species and population density decreased rapidly. Species diversity also manifested lower values during this hypoxic period. Faunal composition changed seasonally with Capitella capitata dominant at the hypoxic sites in spring but disappearing in summer. The health condition of the benthic faunal community assessed by the composition of functional groups within community also changed due to the summer hypoxia from a slightly polluted condition to a highly polluted condition. From these results it has been shown that the recent macrozoobenthic community structure in Gamak Bay has returned to a state similar to what it was before dredging works commenced. 相似文献

Dinoflagellate cysts acquired from sediment cores were analyzed in order to reconstruct historical nutrient levels in Gamak Bay, Korea and Ariake Bay, Japan. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in Gamak Bay were characterized by high proportions of heterotrophic cysts such as Brigantedinium spp., Protoperidinium americanum and Polykrikos cysts, which suggested that nutrients levels may have already been high before 1970s, and then increased further to the hypertrophic conditions of the 1990s. In contrast, dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in Ariake Bay were characterized by high relative abundances of Lingulodinium machaerophorum and Spiniferites spp., which suggested that nutrient levels in Ariake Bay had increased gradually since the mid 1960s, and may have been significantly enhanced by the mid 1980s. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages reflecting environmental changes in the two bays are contrasting, perhaps due to different nutrient enrichment mechanisms. This suggests that the indicators of nutrient levels encoded in dinoflagellate cyst assemblages may exhibit site-specific information. 相似文献

Hypertemporal MODIS time series data provide a unique opportunity to investigate a dynamic relationship between leaf phenology and the climatic pattern of diverse, cloud‐prone Hawaiian ecosystems. Harmonic analysis summarized the complex greenness signals of Hawaiian tropical ecosystems into two main phenological wave forms – a moisture‐limited and a light‐limited type. Greenness maximums occurred during the wet season in dry and mesic ecosystems, and during the dry season in wet forests. The magnitude and periodicity of greenness fluctuations were also rainfall‐dependent. The annual greenness amplitude increased with increasing mean annual precipitation (MAP) in dry and mesic ecosystems. In wetter environments where MAP was greater than 3000 mm, however, annual greenness amplitude decreased with MAP. Annual greenness periodicity was stronger in drylands than in wet forests, and it weakened as annual precipitation increased. This result shows that rainfall is less important as a limiting factor in wet forests than it is in drylands. Therefore, leaf phenology is not governed by rainfall seasonality as forest wetness increases in the region. 相似文献
