Collision and stress trajectories in Taiwan: a finite element model   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Field analyses of Plio-Quaternary compressional deformations in Taiwan have enabled us to reconstruct the paleostress trajectories resulting from the collision of the Luzon arc (Philippine Sea plate) with the Chinese continental margin (Eurasian plate). The direction of the maximum compressional stress σ1 shows a fan-shaped pattern that we interpret as resulting from the collision of a rigid body (the Luzon arc) indenting a more deformable material (the thick sediments of the Chinese continental margin). Simple analytical models qualitatively explain the fan-shaped pattern, but the influence of various parameters such as boundary conditions and rheology cannot be quantitatively accounted for by this approach. Consequently, we have used a finite element technique to compute the stresses and strains induced by the push of a rigid body against a two-dimensional, viscous material. The boundary conditions are the velocities based on plate kinematics. A motion in the N300°E direction best explains the stress trajectories observed in central Taiwan. Viscosity contrasts as well as small changes in the shape of the northern edge of the indenter have little influence on the computed stress pattern. The most important parameter is the direction of convergence. Our model quantitatively explains the general pattern of the stress trajectories observed in the collision zone of Taiwan, between the Philippine Sea plate and Eurasia.  相似文献

During the seismovolcanic crisis of 1976–1977 at La Soufrière on Guadeloupe, a magnetic network of 12 reference markers was set up. Measurements of the intensity of the earth's magnetic field, carried out up to once a day at each marker, showed volcano-magnetic variations of several nanoteslas (nT). The variations, at certain markers, were more or less concealed by transient magnetic variations due to anomalies in conductivity. As early as 1978, measurements were resumed and a telemetering network was coupled with the network of reference markers, to which 4 new markers were added. A detailed study of conductivity anomalies was carried out on the entire volcano. Contrasts in conductivity linked to the existence of a superficial conducting surface, on a SSW/NNE axis, located south of the volcano, caused a great lack of homogeneity in the field variations measured at the surface. Variations greater than about 10 nT appeared in the difference in intensity of the earth's magnetic field between two stations.No long-term magnetic variation was observed between 1978 and 1984. On the network of markers, the accuracy of measurements of volcanic effects was at best 2 nT. Measurements carried out on the telemetering network during the night refined these results, since their accuracy was 1 nT. The only significant volcanic crisis between 1978 and 1984 (5–7 January 1981) seems to be observed by telemetering stations. All the measurements carried out in periods of volcanic inactivity make it possible to re-examine the crisis of 1976–1977. Though volcanomagnetic effects over short periods cannot be accurately determined, variations with a time constant of several weeks were present over the entire volcano. These variations were as high as 7–8 nT in remote stations and they can be linked to the three major phases of eruptive activity at La Soufrière during the crisis of 1976–1977.  相似文献

We present a review of the principal methods used for the seismic detection and identification of active underwater volcanism, based on our experience in French Polynesia. In particular, we descrobe the 5-year activity in the Tahiti-Mehetia area, during which more than 32000 earthquakes were detected by the Polynesian network. We discuss the use of the following three types of seismic waves: conventional (mostly body waves), seismic tremor, andT waves propagated in the low-velocity acoustic channel of the ocean. For each of these waves, we discuss the principal characteristics of the signals, their spectral content, the type of information they provide on the activity of the volcano, and the various limitations faced by their use in detection or monitoring of underwater volcanic edifices. We present a review of the principal swarms monitored by the Polynesian network, and discuss their characterization as either volcanic or tectonic.  相似文献

Late Cenozoic formations in Boso and Miura have been affected by several tectonic events. Tectonic analysis enables us to reconstruct six different paleostress types: (1) early extension affecting the Oligocene/early Miocene Mineoka Group, (2) and (3), relatively minor compressional and extensional events probably early Pliocene in age, (4) major NNE-SSW compression dominating prior to 2 or 3 Ma ago, and (5) and (6) more recent major NNW-SSE compression to the west and WNW-ESE extension to the east, both types affecting the Pleistocene and prevailing since 1–2 Ma ago. The counterclockwise change from NNE-SSW to NNW-SSE compression is not accurately dated, but very likely occurred between 2 and 3 Ma ago; it is compared to similar evolutions in other areas of the Izu collision zone. We conclude that it corresponds to a major counterclockwise change in the direction of plate convergence (from SSE-NNW to SE-NW). The relationships between the directions of convergence and the distributions of Plio-Quaternary compressional paleostresses in and around the collision zone are described through a simple analogy, for the two stages of Plio-Quaternary collision. This counterclockwise change in stress fields and relative motions, also described in the Taiwan collision zone along the same Philippine Sea plate-Eurasia boundary, is interpreted as a major event at the scale of the plate. The possible significances of the other paleostress types identified in Boso are discussed. We conclude that tectonic analysis in and along collision boundaries provides a key for understanding kinematic evolution.  相似文献

Nine submersible dives were made in three trenches off central Japan, between 2990 and 5900 m of water depth. Our observations confirm the interpretation that Daiichi-Kashima Seamount is a Cretaceous guyot formed on the Pacific plate that has traveled into the Japan Trench. We also confirmed the previous interpretation of a large normal fault that splits the seamount in two halves, the lower one being now subducting beneath the Japan margin. Compressional deformation was identified within the lower part of the inner slope in front of the seamount. The pattern of deformation that affects Quaternary sediments is in agreement with the present kinematics of the convergence between the Pacific plate and Japan. Deep-water (5700 m) clam colonies are associated with advection of fluids, driven by the subduction-related overpressures. In the northern slope of the Boso Canyon, along the Sagami Trough system (Philippine Sea plate-Japan boundary), the deformation affecting a thick upper Miocene to lower Pliocene sequence indicates two directions of shortening: a N175°E direction which is consistent with the present relative motion along the Sagami Trough (N285–N300°E) and a N30°E direction which could be related to a more northerly direction of convergence that occured during the early Quaternary and earlier.  相似文献

PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) contamination and its relationship to SPM (suspended particulate material) have been studied in the Seine Estuary, which is heavily polluted by these persistent and hydrophobic man-made chemicals. Two sampling cruises have been performed during different freshwater discharge conditions. PCB and SPM concentrations, as well as grain-size distributions in the particulate material have been determined. Water samples have been collected at fixed positions during a tidal cycle, and along transects within the estuary.PCB concentrations vary from 2 ng 1−1 in the marine zone to 250 ng 1−1 within the estuary, and reach 1.3 × 103 ng 1−1 in the turbidity maximum zone. During a tidal cycle, low PCB concentrations are observed at high water, and are in the same range in February as in July. High PCB contamination is observed at low water, but PCB concentrations are about five times higher in February. SPM and PCB variations are well correlated in both periods of observations. Higher PCB contamination during February is explained by higher SPM inputs, mainly due to particles of riverine origin. The transport of PCB within the estuary depends on the quantity and the grainsize composition of suspended material, which varies according to freshwater discharge and tidal amplitude.  相似文献

Deep-water samples collected during the Kaiko project are often associated with biological communities located on geological structures favorable to fluid venting. The evidence of fluid venting are the temperature anomalies, the decrease in sulfate concentrations, the content in methane and the lowC1(C2 +C3) ratio of light hydrocarbons. Because of large dilution by ambiant seawater during sampling it is difficult to compute the composition of the advected end-member pore fluid. Part of this fluid should originate in the “petroleum window”, i.e. at temperature about 60°C. Modeling the upward flow of water, taking into account the anomalies of temperature measured on the seafloor and the geochemical anomalies, leads to non-steady-state advection of the pore fluid. The occurrence of a deep component in the fluid has implications for the geological and tectonic models of the subduction zones off Japan.  相似文献

Noble gas elemental and isotopic abundances were measured in seven deep-sea water samples from five different sampling sites in the Nankai Trough, the Japan Trench and the Kuril Trench. The samples were obtained by the manned submersible “Nautile”. Most of the sampling sites are associated with clam colonies and/or fluid venting. Excesses both in3He/4He ratio and He concentration are observed in a seawater sample collected a few kilometers off the clam colonies which were found at a depth of 3830 m at the mouth of the Tenryu Canyon. Concentrations of noble gases (Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe) in this sample show progressive depletion from Ne to Xe relative to those in 1°C air-saturated seawater, which can be attributed to mixing of hot water ( 15°C) with cold ambient water ( 1°C). Isotopic compositions of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in this sample are atmospheric. These observations may reflect venting of hot pore water around the Tenryu Canyon. All the other samples show a significant excess in concentration of all noble gases relative to 1°C air-saturated seawater and the isotopic compositions are atmospheric. This excess of noble gas concentrations may appear to be air contamination in the samples. However, results of hydrocarbon analyses of the Kaiko samples imply that such large amount of air contamination is improbable. Decomposition of gas hydrate in deep-sea sediments is a more likely explanation for the observed excess of noble gas concentration.  相似文献

Résumé La reconnaissance de la fracturation dans le Jura souabe, et son analyse qualitative et quantitative (par traitement informatique) a permis de distinguer cinq épisodes tectoniques cassants, caractérisés successivement par: une distension N-S, des compressions N-S et SW-NE, une distension E-W et une compression ESE-WNW. Ces états de contrainte au sein de la plateforme européenne, en avant de la zone de collision Afrique-Europe, traduisent les mouvements relatifs de ces plaques au cours du Tertiaire.
Scouting of fracturation in Swabian Jura, and qualitative and quantitative (by informatical treatment) analysis allow to distinguish five breacking tectonic episodes caracterized by: (1) a N-S distension, (2) N-S and (3) NE-SW compressions, (4) a E-W distension and (5) a ESE-WNW compression. These stress fields inside the european platform, in front of collision zone Africa-Europa, attest relative motions of these plates during Tertiary.

Zusammenfassung Im Schwäbischen Jura lassen die qualitative und die quantitative Aufnahme der Frakturierung sowie ihre EDV-Analyse fünf aufeinander folgende Phasen der tektonischen Beanspruchung (tectonique cassante) erkennen: (1) Zerrung N-S, (2) Kompression N-S und (3) SW-NE, (4) Zerrung E-W, (5) Kompression ESE-WNW. Diese Spannungszustände in der Kollisions-zone von Afrika und Europa vorgelagerten europäischen Plattform geben ein Bild der Relativbewegungen dieser beiden Kontinentalplatten im Tertiär.
