Assessing the extent of local trace metal pollution in marine atmospheric particulates presents a number of difficulties, and one potential approach to the problem has been evaluated by reference to a series of aerosols from the lower troposphere over the Eastern Mediterranean. This region, which is less remote from the continents than open-ocean areas, has two significantly different atmospheric particulate catchments: being bordered in the north by nations having industrialized, semi-industrialized and rural economies, and in the south by the North African desert belt. The elemental chemistry of the particulates is illustrated in terms of the distributions of Fe and Pb, which are presented in the form of enrichment factor diagrams, and is shown to be essentially controlled by the dilution of a ‘European’ background material, common to ‘remote’ regions of the latitudinal belt, with crust-derived, desert components. Major local perturbations in the dilution relationship can occur when either crust-derived or pollutant components strongly dominate the total particulate population. The extent of these local perturbations can be tentatively assessed using appropriate enrichment factor diagrams, which offer a framework within which to interpret the elemental chemistry of marine atmospheric particulates providing sufficient data is available for their construction. By using such an EF diagram it is suggested that the Eastern Mediterranean atmospheric particulates have not suffered local pollution on a gross scale with respect to Pb.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We propose a method for spatial downscaling of Landsat 8-derived LST maps from 100(30?m) resolution down to 2–4?m with the use of the Multiple Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) models coupled with very high resolution auxiliary data derived from hyperspectral aerial imagery and large-scale topographic maps. We applied the method to four Landsat 8 scenes, two collected in summer and two in winter, for three British towns collectively representing a variety of urban form. We used several spectral indices as well as fractional coverage of water and paved surfaces as LST predictors, and applied a novel method for the correction of temporal mismatch between spectral indices derived from aerial and satellite imagery captured at different dates, allowing for the application of the downscaling method for multiple dates without the need for repeating the aerial survey. Our results suggest that the method performed well for the summer dates, achieving RMSE of 1.40–1.83?K prior to and 0.76–1.21?K after correction for residuals. We conclude that the MARS models, by addressing the non-linear relationship of LST at coarse and fine spatial resolutions, can be successfully applied to produce high resolution LST maps suitable for studies of urban thermal environment at local scales.  相似文献

A three-dimensional air quality model (MC2-AQ) developed for studying oxidant chemistry on regional to urban scales over North America was adapted and implemented for European conditions. The modelling system is based on the Canadian Mesoscale Compressible Community (MC2) Model, a non-hydrostatic meteorological model, to which modules permitting on-line calculations of chemical transformations, anthropogenic and biogenic emissions, and deposition were added. The transport of chemical species is done on the same grid and with the same advection, convection, and diffusion schemes as are used for the meteorological fields. The developed model is highly flexible and was adapted to different scales by allowing for self-nesting. In this paper we present model results for a high-ozone episode, June 18–26, 2000, over Europe. The modelling system was able to reproduce general characteristics (growth, extent, and dissipation) of the pollution episode. Accumulation of ozone precursors during weak wind and high-temperature synoptic conditions was essential for episode formation. Subsequent episode development and advancement across Europe was driven by frontal systems. A stationary front associated with a low-pressure system over Ukraine prevented the further eastward transport of the polluted air mass. The episode was terminated after the passage of a cold front advecting relatively clean Atlantic air mass.  相似文献

Dune mobility and vegetation cover in the Southwest Kalahari desert   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
As part of a wider project investigating the palaeoenvironmental significance of partially vegetated linear dunes in the southwest Kalahari, data collected in the latter part of 1992 concerning dune movement and vegetation cover suggest that sediment transport is occurring on some dune surfaces, and that the majority of surface activity occurs on the crests and upper slopes of the dunes. The data suggest that the limiting variables on surface sediment movement vary on different parts of a dune. On interdunes and lower dune slopes the primary limiting variable is available wind energy, while on dune crests and upper slopes it is vegetation cover. Ground cover by litter has much greater importance in protecting the surface sediment from erosion than rooted vegetation. From individual data points, no evidence is found to support a threshold vegetation cover below which sediment movement occurs. Rather, a gradient of activity is suggested whereby a reduction in vegetation cover increases the potential for sediment movement and surface change. However, dunes with differing amounts of mean vegetation cover display differing degrees of surface activity, and at this scale, a vegetation cover threshold in the region of 14 per cent may be recognized.  相似文献

We studied the behavior of gulls at night with an image intensifier telescope to determine whether they were active at night, and the extent of their foraging in coastal habitats of New Jersey in the summer, fall, and winter of 1989–1990. Regression models and Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated that date, time of day, tide, cloud cover, moon phase, and study location all influenced variations in the presence and nocturnal activities of gulls. For each site and species, an, average of 48–88% of the nocturnal surveys recorded gulls foraging or flying about. More laughing gulls (Larus atricilla) foraged at night at Brigantine Beach compared to ring-billed gulls (L. delawarensis) at the northern New Jersey sites. However, more gulls were flying about at the Raritan River site compared to the other places. We suggest that more laughing gulls fed at night compared to ring-billed gulls because the former were breeding. Breeding gulls spend half their time incubating or caring for chicks, and thus might have time constraints on foraging during the day. Laughing gulls foraged at all times of the night on some surveys, but were more frequent around midnight, and the number of flying laughing gulls decreased after 0200 hours. Ring-billed gulls, however, seemed to be equally active all night. Our data indicate that gulls can be active all night, and in all habitats.  相似文献

Boninites and related magnesian low-Ti magmas are generally regarded as partial melts of a moderately to severely depleted peridotite source. Incompatible lithophile element abundances indicate that this source was variably enriched in LREE, Zr, Sr, Ba and alkalis by some mantle metasomatic process. Low-Ti lavas from the Bonin-Mariana arc system, Cape Vogel, New Caledonia, Cyprus, Newfoundland and SE Australia have been analysed for Pd, Ir, Au, Cu, S and Se. Comparison of fresh glassy material with variably altered samples suggests sporadic loss of Au and Cu and essentially inert behaviour for Pd, Ir and Se during seawater and subsequent alteration. They are uniformly enriched in Pd (mean 15 ppb) and depleted in Cu (mean 20 ppm), S (mean < 54 ppm) and Se (mean 53 ppb) compared to average MORB (<0.8 ppb Pd, 72 ppm Cu, 800 ppm S and 196 ppb Se) and exhibit incompatible-like behaviour for these elements and Au.The data are compatible with fractionation of the chalcophile elements during multi-stage mantle melting. Primary MORB liquids are S-saturated in their mantle source and an immiscible sulfide component is retained in the mantle residue. This results in the preferential removal of metals having low DS/L- values (base metals) and concentration of those metals with high DS/L values (precious metals) in the residual mantle sulfide fraction. Subsequent remelting of this refractory source produces S-deficient precious metal-enriched magmas, as exemplified by boninites. The absence of correlation between incompatible lithophile element enrichment and chalcophile element abundances suggests that the latter were not added to the source during mantle metasomatism.The constraints imposed by the nature of the source region result in two fundamentally contrasting patterns of behaviour for exclusively chalcophile elements. Magmas generated in mildly depleted to undepleted source regions by low to moderate degrees of partial melting (e.g. MORB) are S-saturated and become rapidly impoverished in precious metals during the early stages of silicate fractionation, owing to the co-precipitation of an immiscible sulfide component. Magmas generated from a strongly depleted source are initially S-undersaturated and concentrate chalcophile metals in their liquid residua.The contrasting behaviour of chalcophile metals during the early crystallisation stage of MORB and low-Ti magmas lead to divergent predictions concerning the primary distribution of these metals in oceanic crust generated by these magmas. The similarity in composition of early Bushveld magmas and boninites suggests that these S-deficient, PGE-enriched magmas may be essential to the formation of platiniferous horizons in layered intrusions.  相似文献

Piping plovers breed in coastal areas where they experience intense competition with man. I studied habitat use (using transects) and foraging behavior (using focal animals) at three habitats on each of three nesting beaches over a 2-yr period (1988–1989) in New Jersey, USA, to understand how plovers use space. Piping plovers forage along in tidal oceanfront, in the dunes, and in backbays, and their relative use of tehse habitats partially depends on the presence of people. Within each habitat the plovers select sites that contain fewer people than the habitat as a whole. The time devoted to vigilance (when they are not searching for food) is directly related to the number of people near them, and to the overall human use of that habitat. Thus, in habitats with few people the plovers can spend 90% of their foraging time actively searching for prey and feeding, whereas on beaches with many people they may spend less than 50% of their foraging time in direct feeding behaviors. A diversity of habitats allows the birds to move between habitats to minimize interactions with people and maximize the time devoted to foraging. The results suggest that it is critical to maintain high habitat diversity in coastal environments to help mitigate competition with people.  相似文献

Multiple intertidal bars and troughs, often referred to as ‘ridges and runnels’, are significant features on many macrotidal sandy beaches. Along the coastline of England and Wales, they are particularly prevalent in the vicinity of estuaries, where the nearshore gradient is gentle and a large surplus of sediment is generally present. This paper examines the dynamics of such bar systems along the north Lincolnshire coast. A digital elevation model of the intertidal morphology obtained using LIDAR demonstrates that three to five intertidal bars are consistently present with a spacing of approximately 100 m. The largest and most pronounced bars (height = 0·5–0·8 m) are found around mean sea level, whereas the least developed bars (height = 0·2–0·5 m) occur in the lower intertidal zone. Annual aerial photographs of the intertidal bar morphology were inspected to try to track individual bars from year to year to derive bar migration rates; however, there is little resemblance between concurrent photographs, and ‘resetting’ of the intertidal profile occurs on an annual basis. Three‐dimensional beach surveys were conducted monthly at three locations along the north Lincolnshire coast over a one‐year period. The intertidal bar morphology responds strongly to the seasonal variation in the forcing conditions, and bars are least numerous and flattest during the more energetic winter months. Morphological changes over the monthly time scale are strongly affected by longshore sediment transport processes and the intertidal bar morphology can migrate along the beach at rates of up to 30 m per month. The behaviour of intertidal bars is complex and varies over a range of spatial and temporal scales in response to a combination of forcing factors (e.g. incident wave energy, different types of wave processes, longshore and cross‐shore sediment transport), relaxation time and morphodynamic feedback.
