Three mangrove restoration methods were tested at Nu’uuli, Tutuila Island, American Samoa. Since clearing 27 years ago converted
the mangrove into a mudflat, the ecosystem was sufficiently altered that it could not self-correct; the ecosystem showed no
natural regrowth despite an ample supply of propagules. While several years of monitoring may ultimately be required to determine
the project’s success, and several decades could be required to fully return the full suite of functions, the project’s low-cost,
nontechnical restoration techniques, using readily available materials, have proven to be modestly successful, with 38% sapling
survival after six months. Several years of monitoring will be necessary to determine if the restoration site’s small elevation
deficit relative to a reference site ultimately requires modifying the site’s physical structure to correct the hydrology.
Direct community participation in the project was critical to reduce the risk of human disturbance of the restoration site.
One year project costs were about USD 2,150 orUSD2,150 or USD 13,030 ha−1. Labor comprised 84% of expenses; replicating the restoration project in developing countries would cost less due to lower
wage levels. Six months after initial restoration activities, there was a highly significant difference betweenBruguiera gymnorrhiza andRhizophora mangle sapling survival, with 21% and 45% of the original 42R. mangle and 95B. gymnorrhiza saplings remaining, respectively. The lowerR. mangle survival may have resulted from an unavoidable need to source saplings from an area with different environmental conditions
than the restoration site. Saplings were transplanted into tires filled with sediment as a simple, low-cost method to raise
the elevation of the sediment surface. Saplings were also transplanted adjacent to rebar and without any support mechanism.
There was no significant difference in sapling survival by treatment for individual or combined species. The restoration project
is a model for the community-based, simple, low-cost approaches to ecological restoration needed in the region. Pilot projects
using similar techniques may be worth pursuing at the other 15 Pacific Island countries and territories where mangroves are

The quantity and quality of lignin phenols (Σ8, Λ, S/V, C/V and (Ad/Al)v) in the sediments of three small Lobelia lakes with neither inlets nor outlets were investigated and compared with palynological data and lithology of the profiles.
The method of alkaline CuO oxidation was used. Substantial differences with respect to sedimentary lignin concentration and
provenance recorded along the profiles and among the sites are in good agreement with pollen data describing the dominant
type of vegetation and with indices of soil erosion in the lakes’ catchments. This relation shows that the compositions of
lignin degradation products in these lakes are closely related to the local environmental conditions. In all the lakes gymnosperm
wood is the main source of lignin products; however, each lake is characterized by different S/V index values. Especially
good correlations were obtained between pine pollen proportions in sediments and the S/V index. The correlation between the
C/V and (Ad/Al)v indices indicates a higher degradation of organic matter when non-woody tissue is more abundant. This pilot study illustrates
the usefulness and potential for a wider application of lignin oxidation products in palaeoecological reconstructions. This
kind of data would be of special importance when investigating local presence/absence of woody plants and the role of angiosperms/gymnosperms
in local vegetation. Estimates of lignin biodegradation levels, as well as the data on diagenetic processes, may afford supplementary
information on possible disturbances in sedimentation. 相似文献
Radiotracer 210Pb and contaminant copper were used to estimate sediment accumulation rates in 4 cores from the Ajkwa River estuary and mangrove tidal channels in western Irian Jaya. Mass accumulation rates (4.5–13 kg dry wt m−2 yr−1) were within the envelope of expectations for a region of high rainfall, great river catchment relief, and rapid tectonic uplift of mountains. Copper accumulation rates were enhanced 40 fold in surface sediments, compared to pre-1950 sections of the sediment cores. These recent sediments with enhanced copper concentrations come from Freeport Indonesia mine tailings over the last 27 years. Variations in sediment core profiles of Al, Fe, and organic carbon were small, indicating no great change in bulk sediment composition. Sulfur concentrations decline toward the sediment surface, suggesting a decline in rates of microbial sulfate reduction. Enhanced sediment copper concentrations will be a useful tracer of sediment dispersal from the Ajkwa River estuary along this coast. 相似文献
The compositional variation of chromite and associated olivine in chromite-rich and chromitepoor cumulus layers of the Panton Sill is described and a diffusion-controlled crystallization mechanism is proposed to explain this variation. =(Mg/Fe2+)liquid/(Mg/Fe2+) chromite6, is to deplete the surrounding magma in chromium and decrease Fe2+ relative to Mg such that a chemical gradient exists between the overlying magma, through which the cumulus grains settled, and the magma in contact with settled chromite grains near the magma/crystal pile interface. Postcumulus equilibration of olivine and chromite with the surrounding magma results in higher Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) ratios of both olivine and chromite and higher Al content of chromite. The extent of this postcumulus modification is directly related to the proportion of chromite to olivine in a particular layer. This model can be extended to stratiform intrusions elsewhere in which chromite coprecipitates with olivine, orthopyroxene or plagioclase and displays similar compositional trends. 相似文献
The dynamical evolution of triple systems has been studied by computer simulations. A function (t) has been defined, where p is the maximum distance of the components from their centre of inertia, and t is the time. The value of is used to indicate the current size of the triple system. The minima of have been followed during the course of evolution of the triples. A distribution of f(min) has been obtained, which is described by the following statistical parameters: the mode is equal to 0.65d, the mean value min= 0.750d, r.m.s. is 0.477d, the asymmetry is 0.218, the excess is 2.04 where d is the mean harmonic distance between the bodies in the equilibrium state of the triple system. New Giant Metre-Wave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the five-component pulsar B1857−26 provide detailed insight into its pulse-sequence modulation phenomena for the first time. The outer conal components exhibit a 7.4-rotation period, longitude-stationary modulation. Several lines of evidence indicate a carousel circulation time of about 147 stellar rotations, characteristic of a pattern with 20 beamlets. The pulsar nulls some 20 per cent of the time, usually for only a single pulse, and these nulls show no discernible order or periodicity. Finally, the pulsar's polarization-angle traverse raises interesting issues: if most of its emission comprises a single polarization mode, the full traverse exceeds 180°; or if both polarization modes are present, then the leading and the trailing halves of the profiles exhibit two different modes. In either case, the rotating-vector model fails to fit the polarization-angle traverse of the core component. 相似文献

(on-line) and the resulting PT value satisfies inequalities 0 ≤ PT(t) ≤ 1. As a result, the hazard space (0–1) can be always divided into smaller subspaces (e.g., 0–10−5, 10−5–10−4, 10−4–10−3, 10−3–1), possibly named with symbols (e.g., A, B, C, D, …) called “hazard states” — which saves the prediction users from worrying of probabilities. The estimator PT can be interpreted as a formal statement of (reformulated) Comprehensive Method of Rockburst State of Hazard Evaluation,

Magma degassing at Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV) is characterised by an almost permanent SO2 flux and a HCl production rate which mainly depends on dome growth rate. Degassing processes have been studied through textural, H2O and halogen analyses of clasts collected between 1995 and 2006 on the dome and in pyroclastic flows and vulcanian eruption deposits. Cl, Br and I are strongly depleted in melts during H2O degassing with no significant Cl–Br–I fractionation, whereas F is almost unaffected. All magmas erupted at SHV have followed a multi-step degassing path from the magma chamber up to a shallow depth ( 1 km, P 20 MPa). From that depth, however, effusive and explosive paths are distinct; vulcanian eruptions are the result of closed system degassing (CSD), while effusive dome growth is the result of CSD up to a very shallow depth (≤ 200 m, P 5–2 MPa) followed by open system degassing (OSD). CSD is modelled using the H2O solubility law, the perfect gas law and partition coefficients of halogens between a rhyolitic melt and H2O vapour (dv − li). Gas loss characteristic of OSD is modelled using a Rayleigh law. Degassing induced crystallisation is introduced through the ratio of crystallisation and degassing rates, which ranges from 150–500. dv − lCl for OSD ranges between 50–300, increasing with melt Cl content. For CSD, the lower effective dv − lCl ( 20) is attributed to kinetic effects.
Dome forming activity has a greater impact on atmospheric chemistry than vulcanian eruptions because OSD is much more efficient at extracting halogens. The model shows that HCl flux is a good proxy for the dome forming eruption rate. Comparison between model and measured gas compositions suggests a high HBr–BrO conversion rate (BrO/Total Br 1/3) in the SHV gas plume.
The degassing behaviour of Cl, Br and I implies similar Cl/Br ( 160) and Br/I ( 90) in initial melts, volcanic clasts and high temperature gases. The low Cl/Br at SHV compared to other island arcs ( 250–300) is attributed to a shallow, pre-eruptive Br enrichment. The almost permanent dome extrusion at SHV since 1995 has likely had a significant regional atmospheric impact because of the very efficient effusive degassing and the high conversion rate of halogens into reactive species within the gas plume. 相似文献
