The shapes of sills and laccolithic intrusions and associated host rock deformation were studied at several locations on the flanks of the Henry Mountains. Diorite sills range from 0.5 to 10 m in thickness, are less than 1 km2 in areal extent, and have blunt terminations. The laccolithic intrusions range from 10 to 200 m in thickness, and from 1 to 3 km2 in areal extent. The host rock, principally sandstone and shale, is deformed along closely spaced cataclastic shear planes. This deformation is concentrated at contacts, especially near sill terminations and over laccolith peripheries. The diorite contains plagioclase phenocrysts which are usually sheared in a thin zone adjacent to each contact. Field observations suggest that sills are the forerunners of laccolithic intrusions which form only after magma has spread far enough laterally (greater than about 1 km2 in the Henry Mountains) to gain leverage to bend the overburden upward. Further injection of magma results in laccolithic peripheries or terminations with one of three distinct cross-sectional forms: (1) blunt termination of the diorite accompanied by bending and minor faulting of the host rock; (2) termination at a peripheral diorite dike cutting upward across the host rock; or (3) abrupt termination of the diorite against a nearly vertical fault zone.In order to study some of the processes of sill and laccolith intrusion, mechanical models for the driving pressure, physical properties, and flow behavior of the diorite magma are derived and discussed. A static driving pressure (equal to the difference between total magma pressure and lithostatic pressure) of up to 700 bar is estimated. The rheological behavior of the magma in the Henry Mountains is unknown. However, flow behavior is calculated assuming three of the more common models for fluids: Newtonian viscous, pseudoplastic, and Bingham. Suspended crystals probably contributed to the finite strength of the magma (estimated to be at least 103 dyn/cm2 for the Henry Mountains magma) which enables it to support dense zenoliths and also fixes maximum limits on the lengths of sills or dikes. Pressure in magma flowing along tabular intrusions of uniform thickness drops linearly in the flow direction for all three rheological materials. Thickening of tabular intrusions tends to make the pressure drop less rapidly, but pressure drops more rapidly in the tapered region near a termination. Pressure distributions under these and other conditions are derived in order to use them in the models of host rock deformation presented in Part II.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study experiments with reservoir representation schemes to improve the ability to model active water management in the National Water Model (NWM). For this purpose, we developed an integrated water management model, NWM-ResSim, by coupling the NWM with HEC-ResSim, and two reservoir representation schemes are tested: simulation of reservoir operations and retrieval of scheduled operations. The experiments focus on a pilot reservoir domain in the Russian River basin – Lake Mendocino, California – and its contributing watershed. The evaluation results suggest that the NWM-ResSim improves the simulation performance of reservoir outflow from this managed reservoir over the NWM default level pool routing scheme. The degree of this improvement depends on the suitability of the operation guidance; the reservoir operations simulation scheme could have acceptable errors for the purposes of water resources management, but not for flood operations. Results of the retrieval scheme of scheduled operations demonstrated better performance for sub-daily flood operations.  相似文献

Mode-superposition has been extensively used in computing the dynamic response of complex structures. Two versions of mode-superposition, namely the mode-displacement method and the mode-acceleration method, have been employed. The present paper summarizes the results of a systematic study comparing the accuracy of the mode-displacement and mode-acceleration methods when applied to structures with various levels of damping or various excitation frequencies. Profiles of the K line of Caii are computed for a two component solar chromosphere, chosen to simulate with a simple geometry the chromospheric supergranular network. Each component rises above the BCA photosphere, the boundary component representing the bright network with a sharp temperature rise and the cell component representing the darker region with an extended temperature minimum. Theoretical intensity profiles of the Can K core, calculated as weighted averages over the projected areas of the components, are produced for = 0.6 and 0.3. The line source function and the optical depth are obtained from a self-consistent treatment of the steady state and radiative transfer equations, with complete redistribution assumed for scattering in the line. The atomic model consists of two bound levels and a continuum. It is found that a 4600 K minimum can lead to the successful theoretical prediction of the observed limb darkening and 4300 K radiation temperature of the K1 feature only when very large values of turbulent velocity are assumed to exist in the cell region.Publications of the Goethe Link Observatory, Indiana University, No. 95.  相似文献

本文报道了黑龙江嘉荫白山头地区一条新的地层剖面及其K/T界线的初步研究。新命名的“白山头段”代表乌云组下部的早古新世地层,含以Tiliaephyllum tsagajanicum等为代表的达宁早期植物化石。在白山头剖面上,作者发现可能为白垩纪末期的凝灰岩。结合与俄罗斯布列亚盆地含K/T界线的查加扬群标准剖面的对比,推测嘉荫地区的K/T界线可能位于白山头段底部与上述凝灰岩之上的一层炭质泥岩之间。  相似文献

Records of hydrologic parameters, especially those parameters that are directly linked to air temperature, were analyzed to find indicators of recent climate warming in Minnesota, USA. Minnesota is projected to be vulnerable to climate change because of its location in the northern temperate zone of the globe. Ice-out and ice-in dates on lakes, spring (snowmelt) runoff timing, spring discharge values in streams, and stream water temperatures recorded up to the year 2002 were selected for study. The analysis was conducted by inspection of 10-year moving averages, linear regression on complete and on partial records, and by ranking and sorting of events. Moving averages were used for illustrative purposes only. All statistics were computed on annual data. All parameters examined show trends, and sometimes quite variable trends, over different periods of the record. With the exception of spring stream flow rates the trends of all parameters examined point toward a warming climate in Minnesota over the last two or three decades. Although hidden among strong variability from year to year, ice-out dates on 73 lakes have been shifting to an earlier date at a rate of −0.13 days/year from 1965 to 2002, while ice-in dates on 34 lakes have been delayed by 0.75 days/year from 1979 to 2002. From 1990 to 2002 the rates of change increased to −0.25 days/year for ice-out and 1.44 days/year for ice-in. Trend analyses also show that spring runoff at 21 stream gaging sites examined occurs earlier. From 1964 to 2002 the first spring runoff (due to snowmelt) has occurred −0.30 days/year earlier and the first spring peak runoff −0.23 days/year earlier. The stream water temperature records from 15 sites in the Minneapolis/St Paul metropolitan area shows warming by 0.11C/year, on the average, from 1977 to 2002. Urban development may have had a strong influence. The analysis of spring stream flow rates was inconclusive, probably because runoff is linked as much to precipitation and land use as to air temperature. Ranking and sorting of annual data shows that a disproportionately large number of early lake ice-out dates has occurred after 1985, but also between 1940 and 1950; similarly late lake ice-in has occurred more frequently since about 1990. Ranking and sorting of first spring runoff dates also gave evidence of earlier occurrences, i.e. climate warming in late winter. A relationship of changes in hydrologic parameters with trends in air temperature records was demonstrated. Ice-out dates were shown to correlate most strongly with average March air temperatures shifting by −2.0 days for a 1°C increase in March air temperature. Spring runoff dates also show a relationship with March air temperatures; spring runoff dates shift at a rate of −2.5 days/1°C minimum March air temperature change. Water temperatures at seven river sites in the Minneapolis/St Paul metropolitan area show an average rise of 0.46°C in river temperature/1°C mean annual air temperature change, but this rate of change probably includes effects of urban development. In conclusion, records of five hydrologic parameters that are closely linked to air temperature show a trend that suggests recent climate warming in Minnesota, and especially from 1990 to 2002. The recent rates of change calculated from the records are very noteworthy, but must not be used to project future parameter values, since trends cannot continue indefinitely, and trend reversals can be seen in some of the long-term records.  相似文献

The southern Irumide Belt (SIB) is an ENE–WSW-trending,late Mesoproterozoic orogenic belt located between the Congo–Tanzania–Bangweulu(CTB) and Kalahari cratons in central southern Africa. It isseparated from the late Mesoproterozoic Irumide Belt (IB) tothe north by Permo-Triassic graben, raising the possibilitythat the younger rifts reactivated a suture between the twobelts that has been rendered cryptic as a result of youngerKaroo cover. Both belts are dominated by calc-alkaline gneisses,but in addition the SIB contains abundant metavolcanic and metasedimentaryrocks. In this study we present detailed geochemical, isotopicand geochronological data for volcanic and plutonic lithologiesfrom the southernmost part of the SIB, the Chewore–RufunsaTerrane. This terrane comprises a wide variety of supracrustalto mid-crustal rocks that have major- and trace-element compositionssimilar to magmas formed in present-day subduction zones. Chondrite-normalizedrare earth element (REE) profiles and whole-rock Sm–Ndisotope compositions indicate that the parental supra-subductionmelts interacted with, and were contaminated by sialic continentalcrust, implying a continental-margin-arc setting. Secondaryionization mass spectrometry dating of magmatic zircon has yieldedcrystallization ages between c. 1095 and 1040 Ma, similar toelsewhere in the SIB. U–Pb dating and in situ Lu–Hfisotopic analyses of abundant xenocrystic zircon extracted fromthe late Mesoproterozoic granitoids indicate that the contaminantcontinental basement was principally Palaeoproterozoic in ageand had a juvenile isotopic signature at the time of its formation.These data are in contrast to those for the IB, which is characterizedby younger, c. 1020 Ma, calc-alkaline gneisses that formed bythe direct recycling of Archaean crust without significant additionof any juvenile material. We suggest that the SIB developedby the subduction of oceanic crust under the margin of an unnamedcontinental mass until ocean closure at c. 1040 Ma. Subsequentcollision between the SIB and the CTB margin led to the cessationof magmatism in the SIB and the initiation of compression andcrustal melting in the IB. A backscattered and secondary electron SEM study of the grain boundary microstructure in quartz mylonites sampled along the length of the retrograde Simplon Fault Zone established three characteristic components. (1) Fine isolated pores (≤?1?μm diameter) are scattered across two-grain interfaces, preferentially concentrated on surfaces in extension. Pores are uncommon on three-grain junctions and there is no evidence for fluid interconnectivity along three- and four-grain junctions. The fine porosity may develop by accumulation of original, mainly intragranular fluid inclusions to the grain boundary during deformation and recrystallization and by cavitation of grain boundaries during grain boundary sliding. Dynamic cavitation implies that the “ductile” mylonitic deformation is at least locally dilatant and therefore pressure sensitive. (2) Large “vug”-like pores (up to mm-scale) extend along multi-grain boundaries. Observed in all samples, they are most common in the higher initial temperature, coarse-grained samples with a microstructure dominated by grain boundary migration recrystallization. Grains bordering this connected porosity develop perfect crystal faces, undecorated by fine pores or pits. The irregular “lobate” optical microstructure of many migrating grain boundaries actually consists of a series of straight crystal faces. The coarse porosity is probably due to accumulation during dynamic recrystallization of (CO2-rich ?) fluid with a high wetting angle against quartz. (3) In one sample, interconnected sinuous ridges, ≤?0.2?μm high, are observed to follow three- and four-grain junctions and disjoint into more isolated worms and spheroidal globules. On two-grain interfaces, these are transitional to more branching vein-like or convoluted brain-like forms. The brain-like and globular forms have been observed, with varying frequency, through the range of samples, with the globules attaining sizes of up to 60?μm. Vein structures have also been observed on intragranular fractures. These topologies do not match across adjoining surfaces and must have developed into free space. The ridge-vein-brain-spheroid structure is distinctly different to that previously observed on experimentally healed microcracks and its origin is not unequivocally established. They could represent unstable meniscus necking of a thin grain-boundary phase of low viscosity, developed due to quasi-adiabatic shear and/or local stress-induced dilatancy during microcracking.  相似文献

Mean crustal velocity is a critical parameter for genesis of continental crystalline crust because it is a function of mean crustal composition and therefore may be used to resolve continental crustal growth in space and time. Although the best values of mean crustal velocity are determined from wide-angle reflection measurements, most studied here necessarily come from vertical averages in crustal refraction determinations. The mode of 158 values of mean crustal velocity is 6.3 km/s, a velocity which corresponds to a mean crustal composition of granodiorite to felsic quartz diorite; Archean crust may be slightly more mafic. Mean crustal velocities range from 5.8 to 7.0 km/s. The lowest values invariably are found in thermally disturbed rift zones and the highest values correspond to velocities in gabbro. Velocities in island arcs may be as low as 6.0 km/s but are typically 6.5–6.9 km/s which corresponds to andesitic composition; estimates of island arc composition are andesitic. If values of mean crustal velocity are not biased, this observation suggests that continental crust did not grow simply by addition of island arc material. Possibilities are that crust formed from fusion of island arcs and was later changed to more felsic composition by addition of material from the mantle or that the late Archean episode of major crustal growth did not involve processes similar to younger island arcs. Some crustal blocks might be changed in composition and thickness by such processes as underplating, interthrusting, necking and sub-crustal erosion. Specially designed experiments are suggested to determine this parameter so critical for understanding genesis of continental crust.  相似文献

A Late Pliocene interval of the Neogene Siwalik (Himalayan) molasse exposed in the Jhelum Re-entrant, Pakistan, is examined for lateral variations in the environment and rate of fluvial sedimentation. A correlative pair of volcanic ash horizons within the Upper Siwalik section defines an isochronous interval of fluvial deposition. Stratigraphic sections measured through the interval at various localities in the Jhelum Re-entrant are analyzed in terms of fluvial stratigraphy and interval thickness, or net sedimentation rate. The stratigraphy indicates a fluvial system of laterally migrating streams leaving behind fining upward sedimentary cycles of lateral and vertical accretion deposits. Fully developed sedimentary cycles display point bar sands (lateral accretion deposits) of the stream channel environment topped by mudstones (vertical accretion deposits) of the overbank (floodplain) environment. The detailed sequence of vertical accretion deposits in these cycles indicates that the floodplain environment consisted of a stream-proximal, sedimentation-dominant zone and a stream-distal, pedogenesis-dominant zone.Broad lateral variations in the rate of molasse sedimentation appear to be related to the large-scale syntaxial tectonics of the northwestern Himalaya. Sedimentation rate increases toward the apex of the re-entrant, indicating that the syntaxial structure controlled the focus of molasse sedimentation during the examined interval of Late Pliocene time. In addition, sedimentation may have been influenced by mild flexures within the molasse basin.
Zusammenfassung Im Gebiet von Jhelum (nördliches Pakistan) reicht das Vortief der neogenen Siwalik-Molasse als Sporn weit in den Faltenbogen des nordwestlichen Himalaya. Die Verfasser untersuchten hier einen Abschnitt des Spätpliozän mit besonderem Hinblick auf laterale Wechsel der fluviatilen Ablagerungen und Sedimentationsraten. Die Obere Siwalik-Molasse enthält hier zwei Leithorizonte mit Tuff, wodurch die Altersgleichheit der fluviatilen Zwischenlagerungen sichergestellt wird. Die Schichtfolge dieser Zwischenlagerungen ist an mehreren Lokalitäten in bezug auf Sedimentationstypen und-raten analysiert worden. Die vorgefundenen Ablagerungszyklen deuten auf ein System von seitlich wandernden Flußläufen. Vollständige Zyklen zeigen Flußbettsedimente (meist Ufersandbänke) gefolgt von feinkörnigen Überflutungssedimenten. Die Feingliederung der Überflutungsfazies zeigt stromnahe Ablagerungszonen einerseits und pedogenetische Randzonen andererseits.Über das gesamte Untersuchungsgebiet ergibt sich eine klare Abhängigkeit zwischen Raten der Molasseaufschüttung und der Faltenbogentektonik des nordwestlichen Himalaya. Die Ablagerungsraten nehmen in Richtung des Bogenscheitels deutlich zu. Daraus wird geschlossen, daß während des untersuchten Zeitabschnittes die regionale Bogentektonik den Schwerpunkt der Molassesedimentation maßgeblich beeinflußt hat. Flache Flexuren innerhalb des Molassebeckens sind ebenfalls in diesen Zusammenhang zu stellen.

Résumé Une avant-fosse de la molasse du néogène Siwalik (Himalayen), en éperon dans l'arc plissé du nord-ouest de l'Himalaya, dans la région du Jhelum, Pakistan, a été étudiée quant à ses variations latérales environnantes et son taux de sédimentation fluviale. Dans la section du Siwalik supérieur, deux horizons-repères de tuffs volcaniques délimitent une période isochronique du dépôt fluvial. Les séries stratigraphiques de cet intercalaire ont été analysées en divers points en fonction de la stratigraphie fluviale et de son épaisseur ou en fonction du taux de sédimentation. Les cycles de sédimentation indiquent un réseau fluvial à migration latérale avec dépôts latéraux et verticaux, de plus en plus fins vers le haut. Les cours semblent être en transition avec le type traditionnel de haute et basse sinuosité. On démontre que l'ensemble des dépôts verticaux sont différentiés selon une zone proximale où la sédimentation domine et une zone distale où la pédogenèse domine.De larges variations latérales dans le taux de sédimentation semblent dues à la tectonique globale de l'éperon associée à la syntexis du nord-ouest himalayen. Une tendance vers une augmentation du taux de sédimentation / subsidence en direction de l'axe de l'éperon délimite un lieu de sédimentation molassique pendant l'intervalle étudié. De plus, l'auteur suggère que la sédimentation du bassin de l'éperon ait été influencée par de légères flexures à la périphérie de la structure régionale.
