The Chalk Group of the Central Downs of the Isle of Wight forms a relay ramp between two major inverted extensional faults. Mortimore (2011) presented a structural model of this key area based on a geological map constructed from detailed logging of a limited set of exposed sections. The area has been recently mapped at 1:10,000 scale by the British Geological Survey. Our interpretation of the geological structure differs significantly from that proposed by Mortimore, and suggests that Chalk has relatively uniform dips that progressively steepen towards the hanging wall of the E-W oriented basement faults. However, a suite of mapped extensional faults indicates an element of differential movement or transpression along the main basement structures.  相似文献

This paper presents a method to construct optimal transfers between unstable periodic orbits of differing energies using invariant manifolds. The transfers constructed in this method asymptotically depart the initial orbit on a trajectory contained within the unstable manifold of the initial orbit and later, asymptotically arrive at the final orbit on a trajectory contained within the stable manifold of the final orbit. Primer vector theory is applied to a transfer to determine the optimal maneuvers required to create the bridging trajectory that connects the unstable and stable manifold trajectories. Transfers are constructed between unstable periodic orbits in the Sun–Earth, Earth–Moon, and Jupiter-Europa three-body systems. Multiple solutions are found between the same initial and final orbits, where certain solutions retrace interior portions of the trajectory. All transfers created satisfy the conditions for optimality. The costs of transfers constructed using manifolds are compared to the costs of transfers constructed without the use of manifolds. In all cases, the total cost of the transfer is significantly lower when invariant manifolds are used in the transfer construction. In many cases, the transfers that employ invariant manifolds are three times more efficient, in terms of fuel expenditure, than the transfer that do not. The decrease in transfer cost is accompanied by an increase in transfer time of flight.  相似文献

Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) distributions observed in a sediment core from Lake McKenzie were utilized to quantitatively reconstruct the pattern of mean annual air temperature (MAAT) from coastal subtropical eastern Australia between 37 and 18.3 cal ka BP and 14.0 cal ka BP to present. Both the reconstructed trend and amplitude of MAAT changes from the top of the sediment core were nearly identical to a local instrumental MAAT record from Fraser Island, providing confidence that in this sediment core branched GDGTs could be used to produce a quantitative record of past MAAT. The reconstructed trend of MAAT during 37 to 18.3 cal ka BP and timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the Lake McKenzie record were in agreement with previously published nearby marine climate records. The amplitude of lower-than-present MAAT during the LGM potentially provides information on the latitude of separation of the Tasman Front from the East Australian current in the subtropical western Pacific. The Lake McKenzie record shows an earlier onset of near modern day warm temperatures in the early Holocene compared to marine records and the presence of a warmer than present day period during the mid-Holocene.  相似文献

From a watershed perspective, Boston Harbor, MA, USA is an ideal site for eelgrass restoration due to major wastewater improvements. Therefore, by focusing on site selection and transplant methods, high survival and expansion rates were recorded at four large eelgrass-restoration sites planted in Boston Harbor as partial mitigation for a pipeline construction project. Transplanted sites met and exceeded reference and donor bed habitat function after 2 years. Hand planting and seeding in checkerboard-patterned transplant plots were efficient and effective methods for jump-starting eelgrass growth over large areas. Although restoration through planting can be successful, it is highly site specific. Even using a published site-selection model, intensive fieldwork was required to identify sites at fine enough scale to ensure successful planting. Given the effort required to identify scarce potential sites, we recommend that future focus includes alternative mitigation strategies that can more adequately prevent eelgrass loss and address water quality degradation which is the leading cause of dieback, site unsuitability for planting, and lack of natural re-colonization.  相似文献

In coastal environments, the supratidal zone bridges marine and terrestrial ecosystems and is important for energy exchange. However, it is also subject to extensive anthropogenic disturbance, such as armoring of shorelines. Shoreline armoring is extensive along many coasts, but the impacts on biota are comparatively unknown. Between 2000 and 2002, paired and synoptic sampling regimes were employed to assess armoring effects on insects and benthic macroinvertebrates in the supratidal zone of Puget Sound beaches. Paired sampling showed natural beach sites had significantly more deposited wrack. Infauna was dominated by oligochaetes and nematodes; talitrid amphipods, insects, and collembolans were significantly more numerous at natural beaches, and crustaceans were more abundant at altered beaches. Insect assemblages were diverse, with taxon richness higher at natural beach sites. In the synoptic sampling, where sites with higher elevation modifications were used, there were fewer differences in invertebrate assemblages between armored and nonarmored sites. The results show that, where shoreline armoring lowers the land–sea interface, benthic infauna and insect assemblages are disrupted. Widespread shoreline modifications may decrease the availability of prey resources for fish and wildlife and decrease the contribution of organic material entering the nearshore ecosystem.  相似文献

The occurrence of micron to millimeter size globular heterogeneities in igneous rocks is frequently explained by processes of liquid immiscibility. However, such textures have also been documented in miscible magmatic pairs. In this study, the ability of miscible magmas to develop transient surface tensions and mimic the behavior of immiscible liquids is tested for the whole spectrum of magmatic compositions. We implemented a numerical model that includes the effect of gradient stresses (namely Korteweg stress) in order to investigate the role of such stresses in the evolution of diffusive interfaces. The results show that an initially elongated heterogeneity surrounded by a miscible and compositionally diverse magma will tend to minimize its contact surface by relaxing to a spherical shape, advected by a Korteweg stress driven flow. If the initial aspect ratio of the heterogeneity exceeds a critical value, surface minimization may be achieved by drop breakup. In addition, it is shown that two neighboring heterogeneities may coalesce to a single spherical drop. These results imply that even for fully miscible magmas, rheological barriers may prevent efficient mechanical intermingling and induce the formation of small-scale globular textures, analogous to those commonly observed in immiscible liquids. A better understanding of the role of Korteweg stress may be of the utmost importance for deciphering the textures generated by the interaction of compositionally diverse magmas.  相似文献

The frequency and intensity of hot weather events are expected to increase globally, threatening human health, especially among the elderly, poor, and chronically ill. Current literature indicates that emergency preparedness plans, heat health warning systems, and related interventions may not be reaching or supporting behavior change among those most vulnerable in heat events. Using a qualitative multiple case study design, we comprehensively examined practices of these populations to stay cool during hot weather (“cooling behaviors”) in four U.S. cities with documented racial/ethnic and socio-economic disparities and diverse heat preparedness strategies: Phoenix, Arizona; Detroit, Michigan; New York City, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Based on semi-structured in-depth interviews we conducted with 173 community members and organizational leaders during 2009–2010, we assessed why vulnerable populations do or do not participate in health-promoting behaviors at home or in their community during heat events, inquiring about perceptions of heat-related threats and vulnerability and the role of social support. While vulnerable populations often recognize heat's potential health threats, many overlook or disassociate from risk factors or rely on experiences living in or visiting warmer climates as a protective factor. Many adopt basic cooling behaviors, but unknowingly harmful behaviors such as improper use of fans and heating and cooling systems are also adopted. Decision-making related to commonly promoted behaviors such as air conditioner use and cooling center attendance is complex, and these resources are often inaccessible financially, physically, or culturally. Interviewees expressed how interpersonal, intergenerational relationships are generally but not always protective, where peer relationships are a valuable mechanism for facilitating cooling behaviors among the elderly during heat events. To prevent disparities in heat morbidity and mortality in an increasingly changing climate, we note the implications of local context, and we broadly inform heat preparedness plans, interventions, and messages by sharing the perspectives and words of community members representing vulnerable populations and leaders who work most closely with them.  相似文献

The relative contributions of dolomite to calcite weathering related to riverine fluxes are investigated on a highly resolved spatial scale in the diverse watersheds of Slovenia, which previous work has shown have some of the highest carbonate-weathering intensities in the world and suggests that dolomite weathering is favored over limestone weathering in mixed carbonate watersheds. The forested Sava and So?a River watersheds of Slovenia with their headwaters in the Julian Alps drain alpine regions with thin soils (<30 cm) and dinaric karst regions with thicker soils (0 to greater than 70 cm) all developed over bedded Mesozoic carbonates (limestone and dolomite), and siliclastic sediments is the ideal location for examining temperate zone carbonate weathering. This study extends previous work, presenting geochemical data on source springs and documenting downstream geochemical fluctuations within tributaries of the Sava and So?a Rivers. More refined sampling strategies of springs and discrete drainages permit directly linking the stream Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios to the local bedrock lithology and the HCO3 ? concentrations to the relative soil depths of the tributary drainages. Due to differences in carbonate source lithologies of springs and tributary streams, calcite and dolomite weathering end members can be identified. The Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio of the main channel of the Sava River indicates that the HCO3 ? concentration can be attributed to nearly equal proportions by mass of dolomite relative to calcite mineral weathering (e.g., Mg2+/Ca2+ mole ratio of 0.33). The HCO3 ? concentration and pCO2 values increase as soil thickness and alluvium increase for discrete spring samples, which are near equilibrium with respect to calcite. Typically, this results in approximately 1.5 meq/l increase in HCO3 ? from the alpine to the dinaric karst regions. Streams in general do not change in HCO3 ?, Mg2+/Ca2+, or Mg2+/HCO3 ? concentrations down course, but warming and degassing of CO2 produce high degrees of supersaturation with respect to calcite. Carbonate-weathering intensity (mmol/km2-s) is highest within the alpine regions where stream discharge values range widely to extreme values during spring snowmelt. Overall, the elemental fluxes of HCO3 ?, Ca2+, and Mg2+ from the tributary watersheds are proportional to the total water flux because carbonates dissolve rapidly to near equilibrium. Importantly, dolomite weathers preferentially over calcite except for pure limestone catchments.  相似文献

Controversy surrounds the sources and transport of land derived pollutants in the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem because there is insufficient knowledge of the mechanism of movement of organic contaminants and the cycling of organic matter in this dynamic system. Thus a sediment and sediment trap study was used to describe the composition of resuspended and surface sediments in the south central Great Barrier Reef and its lagoon. This region is characterised by strong tides (6–8 m at Mackay) and trade winds regularly about 15–20 knots. A series of organic biomarkers detailed the cyclical processes of sediment resuspension, recolonising with marine algae and bacteria, packaging into zooplankton faecal pellets and resettlement to sediments where the organics undergo further diagenesis. With each cycle the inshore sediments are diluted with CaCO3 reef sediments and moved further offshore with the strong ebb tide currents. This results in transport of land derived materials offshore and little storage of organic materials in the lagoon or reef sediments. These processes were detailed by inorganic measurements such as %CaCO3 and Al/Ca ratios, and by the compositions of hydrocarbon, sterol, alcohol, and fatty acid lipid fractions. Persistent contaminants such as coal dust from a coastal loading facility can be detected in high concentration inshore and decreasing out to the shelf break at 180 m approximately 40 nautical miles offshore. The normal processes would likely be amplified during cyclonic and other storms. The lipids show the sources of carbon to include diatoms and other phytoplankton, creanaerchaeota, sulfate reducing and other bacteria, land plants including mangrove leaves, plus coal dust and other petroleum contaminants.  相似文献
