A two-year long record from a triangular mooring array between the Lesser Antilles islands Tobago, Barbados, and St. Lucia is used to investigate the inflow into the Caribbean Sea, the amount of South Atlantic Water (SAW) carried with the inflow, and the role of North Brazil Current (NBC) rings in the observed variability. The data set consists of time series from temperature/conductivity recorders and current meters in the moorings, bottom-mounted inverted echo sounders at the Tobago and St. Lucia mooring positions, and supplementary shipboard measurements. The acoustic travel time measurements of the inverted echo sounders and the conductivity/temperature time series are used for continuous estimation of dynamic height profiles and geostrophic currents between the surface and 1000 dbar as well as the amount of SAW found at the mooring positions.The observations show a domination of intraseasonal variability between 0 and 15 Sv, superimposed on the long-term fluctuations. With time scales of one to three months, these represent the signature of the NBC rings. The baroclinic transport time series shows nine periods of increased variability, indicative of the rings interacting with the Lesser Antilles island arc; with the exception of one, these periods were associated with corresponding sea surface height anomalies. No marked seasonality was observed in the transport variability or the ring frequency.The arrival of individual rings leads to a weakening of the inflow into the Caribbean. Nevertheless, the rings carry large amounts of SAW into the area, and the immediate increase of the transport towards the end of a ring event suggests a subsequent flow of this SAW-rich water into the Caribbean. At St. Lucia, rings sometimes cause a short-term decrease of SAW content, indicative of an influx of northern hemispheric water and a blocking situation. The average transport of SAW into the Caribbean south of St. Lucia during the observations amounted to 5.5 Sv, with no significant seasonal cycle, but a small positive trend in SAW fraction as well as in transport of about 15% and 1 Sv, respectively; a corresponding trend in the baroclinic volume transport was not observed.  相似文献

Concentrations of Hg remain elevated in physical and biological media of the South River (Virginia, USA), despite the cessation of the industrial use of Hg in its watershed nearly six decades ago, and physical characteristics that would not seem to favor Hg(II)-methylation. A 3-a study of inorganic Hg (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) was conducted in physical media (soil, sediment, surface water, porewater and soil/sediment extracts) to identify non-point sources, transport mechanisms, and potential controls on Hg(II)-methylation. Data collected from surface water and sediment indicate that the majority of the non-point sources of IHg to the South River are within the first 14 km downstream from the historic point source. Partitioning data indicate that particle bound IHg is introduced in this reach, releasing dissolved and colloidal bound IHg, which is transported downstream. Extraction experiments revealed that floodplain soils released a higher fraction of their IHg content in aqueous extractions than fine-grained sediment (FGS). Based on ultrafiltration [<5000 nominal molecular weight cutoff (NMWC)] the majority of soil IHg released was colloidal in nature, providing evidence for the continued evolution of IHg for Hg(II)-methylation from soil. Strong seasonal patterns in MeHg concentrations were observed in surface water and sediment. The highest concentrations of MeHg in surface water were observed at moderate temperatures, suggesting that other factors limit net Hg(II)-methylation. Seasonal changes in sediment organic content and the fraction of 1 N KOH-extractable THg were also observed and may be important factors in controlling net Hg(II)-methylation rates. Sulfate concentrations in surface water are low and the evidence suggests that Fe reduction may be an important Hg(II)-methylation process. The highest sediment MeHg concentrations were observed in habitats with large amounts of FGS, which are more prevalent in the upper half of the study area due to the lower hydrologic gradient and agricultural impacts. Past and present land use practices and other geomorphologic controls contribute to the erosion of banks and accumulation of fine-grained sediment in this section of the river, acting as sources of IHg.  相似文献

Non-conservative behaviour of dissolved Mo was observed during specific time periods in the water column of the Wadden Sea of NW Germany. In July 2005 dissolved Mo declined within 36 h from a level only slightly below seawater (82 nM) to a minimum value of 30 nM, whereas in August 2002 dissolved Mo revealed a tidal cyclicity with maximum values up to 158 nM at low tide. In contrast, cruises in August 2003 and 2004 displayed an almost conservative behaviour of Mo. The decrease in dissolved Mo during July 2005 and elevated values in August 2002 were accompanied by Mo enrichments on aggregates in the water column of the Wadden Sea. Along with Mo, dissolved Mn showed unusual concentration patterns in July 2005, with values distinctly below the common summer level (by a factor of five). A direct relation between the loss of Mo and scavenging by freshly formed MnOx phases could not be inferred from our data because both metals revealed inverse patterns. Parallel to decreasing dissolved Mo concentrations dissolved Mn showed an increasing trend while particulate Mn decreased. Such finding is compatible with the formation of oxygen-depleted zones in aggregates, which provide suitable conditions for the rapid fixation of Mo and parallel release of Mn by chemically and/or microbially mediated processes. Our assumption is supported by biological (e.g. number of aggregate-associated bacteria) and sedimentological (e.g. aggregate abundance and size) parameters. The production of organic components (e.g. TEP) during breakdown of an algae bloom in July 2005 led to the formation of larger Mo-enriched aggregates, thus depleting the water column in dissolved Mo. After deposition on and incorporation into sandy tidal flats these aggregates are rapidly decomposed by microbial activity. Pore water profiles document that during microbial decomposition of these aggregates, substantial amounts of Mo are released and may replenish and even enrich Mo in the open water column. We postulate a conceptual model for the observed non-conservative behaviour of Mo in coastal waters, which is based on the tight coupling of geochemical, biological, and sedimentological processes.  相似文献

A rocket-borne spectroheliograph designed to take monochromatic pictures of the sun in the Mgii line at 2795.5 Å was successfully launched from White Sands Missile Range on May 20, 1968. A double ?olc birefringent filter with a spectral bandpass of 2.1 Å was used to select the proper wavelength. Pinhole photographs in the soft X-ray region were also secured in the same flight. The Mgii and X-ray photographs are compared with simultaneous Caii and Hα spectroheliograms, radiomaps at 9.1 cm and 3.3 cm, a Fraunhofer map and a magnetogram and some preliminary results are discussed.  相似文献

Methane, ethane and propane carbon-isotope ratios are controlled by the maturity of the organic material in their source rocks. Isotope data of natural gases can be used in some instances to identify their source rocks. Migration seems to cause no essential changes in the carbon-isotopic composition of the gas components. Under certain circumstances the isotope-maturity relationship can be used in approximating displacement along fault systems or in determining the direction of gas migration.  相似文献

The theory of the olc birefringent filter is complicated and the general formulae describing its optical properties do not invite to any simple physical picture. Due to these formal difficulties, many of its inherent possibilities have not been fully appreciated. In this paper we point out some new possibilities for filters based on this general design.The detailed shape of the transmission profile is a function of the angles of the crystal plate optic axes. It is shown how unwanted transmission sidelobes can be suppressed to any desired level by altering the distribution of plate angles. By the same means, the transmission band can be split into two symmetrically placed replicas, and the distance between the two bands can be varied. In this way the filter can easily be tuned over half the free spectral range.Some of the error sources that are important to filter performance are discussed. An expression is given for the amount of parasitic light introduced by errors in the orientation of the plate optic axes and it is found that errors as large as 0°.5 can be tolerated. A laboratory experiment with 16 birefringent plates has shown that accuracies an order of magnitude better than this figure can easily be achieved. Manufacturing errors in the thickness of the plates can be compensated for by assembling the pile of plates in a particular way. The very strict tolerances usually quoted can therefore be considerably relaxed.  相似文献

Radionuclides released to the environment and deposited with or onto snow can be stored over long time periods if ambient temperature stays low, particularly in glaciated areas or high alpine sites. The radionuclides will be accumulated in the snowpack during the winter unless meltwater runoff at the snow base occurs. They will be released to surface waters within short time during snowmelt in spring. In two experiments under controlled melting conditions of snow in the laboratory, radionuclide migration and runoff during melt‐freeze‐cycles were examined. The distribution of Cs‐134 and Sr‐85 tracers in homogeneous snow columns and their fractionation and potential preferential elution in the first meltwater portions were determined. Transport was associated with the percolation of meltwater at ambient temperatures above 0 °C after the snowpack became ripe. Mean migration velocities in the pack were examined for both nuclides to about 0.5 cm hr?1 after one diurnal melt‐freeze‐cycle at ambient temperatures of ?2 to 4 °C. Meltwater fluxes were calculated with a median of 1.68 cm hr?1. Highly contaminated portions of meltwater with concentration factors between 5 and 10 against initial bulk concentrations in the snowpack were released as ionic pulse with the first meltwater. Neither for caesium nor strontium preferential elution was observed. After recurrent simulated day‐night‐cycles (?2 to 4 °C), 80% of both radionuclides was released with the first 20% of snowmelt within 4 days. 50% of Cs‐134 and Sr‐85 were already set free after 24 hr. Snowmelt contained highest specific activities when the melt rate was lowest during the freeze‐cycles due to concentration processes in remaining liquids, enhanced by the melt‐freeze‐cycling. This implies for natural snowpack after significant radionuclide releases, that long‐time accumulation of radionuclides in the snow during frost periods, followed by an onset of steady meltwater runoff at low melt rates, will cause the most pronounced removal of the contaminants from the snow cover. This scenario represents the worst case of impact on water quality and radiation exposure in aquatic environments.  相似文献

Ambiguous landscape histories can arise from equivocal or incomplete geomorphological, sedimentological or geochronological evidence. In this study, we apply quantitative analyses to robustly assess the origin and age of a field of rounded mounds, known as ‘The Hillocks’. Using clast analysis, the sediment is shown to be consistent with a landslide origin but inconsistent with other glacial sediments in the region. Cosmogenic 10Be exposure age dating suggests The Hillocks formed ~8 ka. Ground‐penetrating radar reveals that the deposit rests upon deltaic foreset beds; combined with topographical data, we calculate a deposit volume of ~15–27 M m3, consistent with the estimated volume of the proposed source area. Overall, our data support a rock avalanche origin, indicating that by 8 ka the valley was ice‐free at The Hillocks’ location, and the level of Lake Wakatipu was lower than 340 m asl by this time. The Dart River delta shoreline was situated somewhere between The Hillocks and the present day shoreline at that time, and has prograded at a maximum average rate of 1 m a?1 since ~8 ka. These findings are significant given the lack of landforms by which to constrain glacial or post‐glacial landscape histories in this region of New Zealand. Arid and Alpine ecosystems are known for extreme environmental changes during the Late Quaternary. We hypothesize that the world's largest Alpine arid ecosystem however, the Alpine Steppes of the Tibetan highlands, remained ecologically stable during the LGM and the mid-Holocene. This hypothesis is tested by distributional range of plant species, plant life forms and rate of endemism. The set of character species has a precipitation gradient between 50 and 350 mm/a, testifying for resilience to precipitation changes. 83% of the species have a wider vertical range than 1000 m used as a proxy for resilience to temperature changes. 30% of the species are endemic with 10 endemic genera, including plate-shaped cushions as a unique plant life form. These findings are in line with palaeo-ecological proxies (δ18O, pollen) allowing the assumption that Alpine Steppes persisted during the LGM with 3 to 4 K lower summer temperatures.During the mid-Holocene, forests could have replaced Alpine Steppes in the upper catchments of the Huang He, Yangtze, Mekong, Salween and Yarlung Zhangbo, but not in the interior basins of the north-western highlands, because the basins were then flooded, suppressing forests and supporting the environmental stability of this arid Alpine grassland biome.  相似文献
