Data from a line of magnetometers stretching along a corrected geomagnetic meridian ~ 302°E through western Canada are used to study the relationship between the convection westward electrojet and Pc 5 micropulsations in the morning sector. It was found that the dominant spectral bands in the Pc 5 range occur within the same latitudinal range occupied by the electrojet. The intensity contours and the character of the polarization parameters clearly show that the Pc 5 activity tracks the westward convection electrojet. The Pc 5 activity is found to be enhanced in conjunction with rapid reconfigurations of the electrojet. Evidence of spatial oscillations of the borders of the electrojet and variations in the intensity of the electrojet is presented. It is concluded from our study that the Pc 5 activity in the morning sector is closely related to the convection westward electrojet and its associated three-dimensional current system.  相似文献

In the companion paper (Lam and Rostoker, 1978) we have shown that Pc 5 micropulsations are intimately related to the behaviour and character of the westward auroral electrojet in the morning sector. In this paper we show that Pc 5 micropulsations can be regarded as LC-oscillations of a three-dimensional current loop involving downward field-aligned current flow near noon, which diverges in part to form the ionospheric westward electrojet and returns back along magnetic field lines into the magnetosphere in the vicinity of the ionosphere conductivity discontinuity at the dawn meridian. The current system is driven through the extraction of energy from the magnetospheric plasma drifting sunwards past the flanks of the magnetosphere in a manner discussed by Rostoker and Boström (1976). The polarization characteristics of the pulsations on the ground can be understood in terms of the effects of displacement currents of significant intensity which flow near the F-region peak in the ionosphere and induced currents which flow in the earth. These currents significantly influence the magnetic perturbation pattern at the Earth's surface. Model current system calculations show that the relative phase of the pulsations along a constant meridian can be explained by the composite effect of oscillations of the borders of the electrojet and variations in the intensity of current flow in the electrojet.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Understanding human dynamics after a major disaster is important to the region’s sustainable development. This study utilized land cover data to examine how Hurricane Katrina has affected the urban growth pattern in the Mississippi Delta in Louisiana. The study analyzed land cover changes from non-urban to urban in three metropolitan areas, Baton Rouge, New Orleans-Metairie, and Hammond, for two time periods, pre-Katrina (2001–2006) and post-Katrina (2006–2010). The study first applied a focal filter to extract continuous urban areas from the scattered urban pixels in the original remote sensing images. Statistical analyses were applied to develop initial functions between urban growth probability and several driving factors. A genetic algorithm was then used to calibrate the transition function, and cellular automata simulation based on the transition function was conducted to evaluate future urban growth patterns with and without the impact of Hurricane Katrina. The results show that elevation has become a much more important factor after Hurricane Katrina, and urban growth has shifted to higher elevation regions. The elevation most probable for new urban growth increased from 10.84 to 11.90 meters. Moreover, simulated future urban growth in this region indicates a decentralized trend, with more growth occurring in more distant regions with higher elevation. In the New Orleans metropolitan area, urban growth will continue to spill across Lake Pontchartrain to the satellite towns that are more than 50 minutes away by driving from the city center.  相似文献

A comparison of two separate MM5 land-use datasets (i.e., ‘US Geological Survey (USGS)’ and ‘Pollutants in the Atmosphere and their Transport over Hong Kong (PATH)’, each with different parameter values and different spatial distributions) was performed to understand the importance of land-surface processes and land-atmosphere interactions in the evolution of mesoscale weather phenomena during a high pollution episode in Hong Kong from 28 December 1999 through 1 January 2000. Also, a series of high resolution mesoscale numerical experiments was performed to investigate the possible roles of various surface characteristics or land-use parameters in this high pollution episode. Specifically, the relative importance of six land-use parameters including the roughness length, thermal inertia, soil moisture availability, albedo, surface heat capacity and surface emissivity are studied. Results from this study suggest that the soil moisture availability is the most important controlling parameter on the flow pattern and on surface fluxes. Sensitivity tests also show that the general flow pattern is insensitive to the other five land-use parameters  相似文献

An experimental programme was conducted in which eight full‐scale unreinforced masonry walls were subjected to cyclic face loading using a system of airbags. Of the eight walls, six contained a window opening and four were subjected to vertical pre‐compression. Combined supports at the vertical and horizontal edges ensured that under face loading the walls underwent two‐way bending. The test walls were found to possess good post‐peak strength and displacement capacity as well as reasonable energy dissipation characteristics. Significant strength and stiffness degradation and non‐symmetry of strength in the positive and negative displacement directions were also evident. Discussion of the causes of the aforementioned trends and their implications towards the seismic response of masonry walls is provided. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Where a distinct soil-rock interface exists, the bedrock medium is commonly treated as elastic half-space and the bedrock surface as the lower boundary of the soil-column model for site response analyses (or the lower boundary of the finite element model for soil-structure interaction analyses). While shear wave velocity in bedrock varies with depth, there has been no consensus amongst scientists and practitioners over the value of “effective depth” into bedrock at which the “half-space” shear wave velocity value should be taken for modeling purposes. This paper reports an interesting and important observation that the effective depth into bedrock is sensitive to the shear wave velocity profile of the overlying soil sediments. A simple and heuristic method, namely Resonant Period Equivalence (RPE) Method, is proposed herein for representing a stratified elastic bedrock of inhomogeneous properties by an equivalent homogeneous elastic half-space medium, which is characterized by a single equivalent shear wave velocity (VR) value. The proposed calculation method has been verified by extensive comparative analyses involving the use of programs SHAKE and NERA and employing the complete shear wave velocity models of both the soil sediments and the underlying stratified bedrock.  相似文献

The analysis and design of offshore structures necessitates the consideration of environmental loads. Realistic modeling of the environmental loads is particularly important to ensure reliable performance of these structures. In this paper, structural reliability analysis of offshore structures subjected to a time varying environment is investigated. In this work, an extreme value statistical model for the wave height is adopted as a basis for the performance assessment of a jacket structure. Due to the changing environment, the model parameters are modeled to be time varying. To deal with this issue, two segmentation algorithms are proposed and applied to the observed data in order to derive piecewise stationary processes for a statistical analysis. The investigation includes the extreme value modeling of the wave height in the characterization of the sea load. The implementation of the segmentation algorithms in the original data eventually leads to approximations of the safety quality of the existing structure within different time interval. The computed result is developed to reflect the time varying effects in the failure probability of structures. The results are compared with the traditional extreme values approach in view of the accuracy and information content. The investigation is also extended to a case where the design of the structure ignores the time varying property.  相似文献

Soil slurry dredged from seabed is becoming more widely used in land reclamation projects. A major problem encountered is that soil slurry is very high in water content and the dewatering process is difficult and time consuming. In this paper, the use of chemical flocculant for the dewatering of soil slurry is proposed and experimentally tested. Polyacrylamide (PAM) with different charge types/charge densities was tested in preliminary slurry dewatering tests. The results showed that the most effective flocculant, cationic PAM (CPAM) with +15 charge density, can reduce the volume of soil slurry (500% water content) by around 60% in 10 minutes. In contrast, the volume of pure soil slurry was almost unchanged. Slurry sedimentation tests on slurries with different flocculant contents and water contents were conducted. It is shown that, by adding flocculant into soil slurry, the rate of settlement under self-weight can be considerably increased in the tested range of water contents (100.7–879.5%). But the water content at the final state increases with flocculant additions. Slurry sedimentation curves displayed different characteristics with different flocculant contents as well as water contents. It is evidenced by particle size analysis that the addition of flocculant into soil slurry can attract soil particles and form large flocs (assemblage of particles), which explains the faster settlement rate in flocculant-treated soil slurry as compared with pure soil slurry. Scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed that flocculant-treated soil particles are more randomly oriented, while soil particles with no flocculant addition deposit in a more paralleled manner. This could explain the higher water content of flocculant-treated soil slurry at the final state.  相似文献

The kinetics of the photoinduced degradation and transformation of the antifouling booster biocide, Irgarol-1051, in natural coastal seawater was studied. The measured first-order rate constant for the degradation of Irgarol-1051 was 4.02 ± 0.1 × 10−4 h−1, while the rate constant for the formation of 2-methylthio-4-tert-butylamino-6-amino-s-triazine (M1), the most dominant degradation product of Irgarol-1051, was 4.6 ± 0.1 × 10−5 h−1. This considerably slower rate suggested that the transformation of Irgarol-1051 to M1 may not be the predominant pathway of the photodegradation process. During the photodegradation study, a new s-triazine species was observed in the degradation mixtures which, together with M1, appeared immediately upon photolysis and continued to accumulate in the degradation mixture throughout the entire study duration. This is in contrast to the behaviour of the recently identified degradation product of Irgarol-1051, 3-[4-tert-butylamino-6-methylthiol-s-triazin-2-ylamino]- propionaldehyde (M2), which was only detected in the degradation mixture after a long induction period. High-resolution tandem mass spectrometric analysis hinted that the new degradation product (M4) may possess a terminal alcohol and is likely to be an N-allylic alcohol derivative of M1. This suggests that M4 may, indeed, be a precursor of M2 via redox transformation at its N-allylic alcohol functionality.  相似文献
