We present the results of a systematic search for transiting planets in a ∼5 Myr open cluster, NGC 2362. We observed ∼1200 candidate cluster members, of which ∼475 are believed to be genuine cluster members, for a total of ∼100 h. We identify 15 light curves with reductions in flux that pass all our detection criteria, and six of the candidates have occultation depths compatible with a planetary companion. The variability in these six light curves would require very large planets to reproduce the observed transit depth. If we assume that none of our candidates are, in fact, planets then we can place upper limits on the fraction of stars with hot Jupiters (HJs) in NGC 2362. We obtain 99 per cent confidence upper limits of 0.22 and 0.70 on the fraction of stars with HJs ( f p ) for 1–3 and 3–10 d orbits, respectively, assuming all HJs have a planetary radius of 1.5 R Jup . These upper limits represent observational constraints on the number of stars with HJs at an age ≲10 Myr, when the vast majority of stars are thought to have lost their protoplanetary discs. Finally, we extend our results to the entire Monitor project, a survey searching young, open clusters for planetary transits, and find that the survey as currently designed should be capable of placing upper limits on f p near the observed values of f p in the solar neighbourhood. 相似文献

Maps of the 450- and 850-μm dust continuum emission from three star-forming condensations within the Lynds 1630 molecular cloud, made with the SCUBA bolometer array, reveal the presence of four new submillimetre sources, each of a few solar masses (two of which are probably class I and two of which are class 0), as well as several sources the existence of which was previously known. The sources are located in filaments and appear elongated when observed at 450 μm. They probably have dust temperatures in the range 10 to 20 K, in good agreement with previous ammonia temperature estimates. Attempts to fit their structures with power-law and Gaussian density distributions suggest that the central distribution is flatter than expected for a simple singular isothermal sphere.

The spatial variability in porosity, hydraulic conductivity, compressibility, and various grain size fractions is analyzed for several sets of samples from the Quadra Sand. This unit is a well-sorted, medium grained, horizontally stratified sand with relatively few silt or gravel interbeds. Both random and uniformly spaced sample plans are used. The heterogeneity of the flow parameters is characterized by frequency histograms and their estimated moments, by their sample autocorrelation functions, and the estimated power spectra. Emphasis is placed on the nature of the spatial dependence between neighboring values of the flow parameters. A nearest neighbor stochastic process model is fit to the data to consider its adequacy in describing the spatial dependence within the porosity and hydraulic conductivity sequences. Even though the Quadra Sand is relatively uniform, a fairly complex spatial structure is observed. A simple monotonically decaying autocorrelation function may not adequately represent the spatial continuity. Statistical anisotropy is observed in both the extent of the spatial autocorrelation and in its functional form. Summary In a modification of the distributed hydrological model, LISFLOOD-WB, a two-source canopy scheme is used to predict both the canopy transpiration and soil evaporation. A revised soil storage capacity curve from the Xinanjiang model is applied to take into account the sub-grid heterogeneity. The modified model is used to estimate the long-term (1980–1997) water budget of the Lushi basin (4423 km2), China. All the input data fields are integrated in a four-dimensional GIS data structure with a raster grid spacing of 1-km. The basin channel network is determined from digital elevation data, and the spatial pattern of canopy leaf area index (LAI) is retrieved from NOAA/AVHRR NDVI images. Generally, the model efficiency for discharge prediction is acceptable, but the discharges are overestimated in the driest years and underestimated in the wettest years. The results indicated that the influence of inter-annual variation of spatial patterns of LAI detected by NOAA/AVHRR NDVI on the estimates of annual evapotranspiration is negligible. Annually averaged ratios of overland flow, infiltration and canopy interception to precipitation are 24±7%, 56±10% and 20±2%, respectively. The inter-annual variations of precipitation and predicted evapotranspiration are relatively high with standard deviations of 5.1 mm day−1 and 2.4 mm day−1, respectively, whereas the inter-annual variation of the net radiation is much less. Monthly temporal patterns of soil moisture follow precipitation strongly. Spatially precipitation and LAI are both significantly correlated with evapotranspiration, although precipitation has a slightly more dominant control. The linear relationship between water yield and LAI is weak on a grid by grid basis. 相似文献

Statistical signal processing techniques have shown progress in discriminating UXO from clutter when the objects occur in isolation. Under this condition, only a single object contributes to the measured sensor data. For multiple closely spaced subsurface objects, however, the unprocessed sensor measurement is a mixture of the responses from several objects. Consequently, the unprocessed measurements cannot be used directly to discriminate UXO from clutter. In this paper, we implement independent component analysis (ICA), a well-established blind source separation (BSS) technique, to recover the unobserved object signatures from the mixed measurement data obtained by simulating electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensor data, and then use the recovered signatures for UXO/clutter discrimination. Discrimination performance depends on multiple factors, including the number of clutter objects in proximity to the UXO, the separation distance between the UXO and clutter, and the number of mixed measurements available.
