The technique involves continuous monitoring of apparent loss of weight of a body suspended in settling slurries. Turbulent fluxes have been evaluated for clear sunny days over the Indian Antarctic station, Maitri, using the basic meteorological data recorded at four levels of a 28 m tower. The data are supplemented with radiation data. The surface layer over Maitri remains thermally stratified during the hours of minimum solar insolation, the so-called nighttime period. The surface winds during this period are generally very strong resulting in high momentum fluxes. In particular, for high winds (>12 m s–1), the temperature gradient is found to be less positive than for moderate winds (4 to 7 m s–1). Solar insolation provided the daytime heating necessary for the diurnal variation of atmospheric stability, and hence, for the turbulent fluxes. Thus, on clear days daytime conditions are marked by upward transport of heat with reduced momentum flux, while stable nighttime conditions are marked by a downward heat flux with increased momentum fluxes. 相似文献

Shear flow instability is studied in the Earth’s magnetotail by treating plasma as compressible. A dispersion relation is derived from the linearized MHD equations using the oscillating boundary conditions at the inner central plasma sheet/outer central plasma sheet (OCPS) interface and OCPS/plasma-sheet boundary layer (PSBL) interface, whereas the surface-mode boundary condition is used at the PSBL/lobe interface. The growth rates and the real frequencies are obtained numerically for near-Earth (\midX\mid\sim10-15 RE) and far-Earth (\midX\mid\sim100 RE) magnetotail parameters. The periods and wavelengths of excited modes depend sensitively on the value of plasma-sheet half thickness, L, which is taken as L=5 RE for quiet time and L=1 RE for disturbed time. The plasma-sheet region is found to be stable for constant plasma flows unless MA3>1.25, where MA3 is the Alfvén Mach number in PSBL. For near-Earth magnetotail, the excited oscillations have periods of 2–20 min (quiet time) and 0.5-4 min (disturbed time) with typical transverse wavelengths of 2–30 RE and 0.5-6.5 RE, respectively; whereas for distant magnetotail, the analysis predicts the oscillation periods of \sim8-80 min for quiet periods and 2–16 min for disturbed periods. 相似文献

A careful survey of quarter-hourly ionograms for the year 1969 has shown that blanketing layer type ionization irregularities occur on many occasions in the E-region of the ionosphere over Trivandrum (dip ~ 0.6°S). It is shown that horizontal shears of horizontal neutral winds are the most likely sources of such layer type irregularities at the magnetic equator. The horizontal wind shears of required magnitude are shown to be provided by internal gravity waves of short period. The rarity of Es-layer occurrence is attributed to the stringent requirements on the amplitude and wave vector orientation of the relevant gravity waves generating the Es-layers. 相似文献

Summary A numerical mesoscale model (COAMPS) is used to study some of the features associated with the evolution of the kinematic,
thermodynamic, and physical structure of the Alabama sea and bay breeze circulations and convections in weak shear environments
based on five cases from Medlin and Croft (1998). The general and expected features and evolution of sea and bay breeze circulations
are captured by the model simulations, including horizontal and vertical wind shifts, thermal contrast between land and water
surface, vertical stability over water and land, return currents and moisture increase. The relationship of the circulations
to specific synoptic flow regimes and local physiographic features was investigated. The sea breeze triggered convective cells
are confirmed to have a preferred location according to the flow regime and local conditions. This result can assist the forecasters
in understanding the anticipated convective cell initiation and development on a given day as related to sea and bay breeze
cells as well as improve the short-term forecast accuracy of the location of thunderstorm initiation based on routine observations
and subsequent convective activity. If local NWS office model a selective subset of cases then they can better visualize and

The thermodynamical and microphysical characteristics of monsoon clouds in the Poona, Bombay and Rihand regions were investigated using extensive aircraft in-cloud observations. The number of clouds sampled at Poona, Bombay and Rihand is 2199, 169 and 104 respectively. The temperatures inside the cloud are colder than its environment at Poona and Rihand. The maximum difference is about 3°C at the cloud base level and the difference decreased with height. At Bombay the difference is less than 1°C and at some levels the temperatures inside the cloud are warmer than its environment. The lapse rates of temperatures inside the cloud are slightly less than those in the immediate environment of the cloud. The environmental lapse rates are nearly equal to the saturated adiabatic value. The positive increments in liquid water content (LWC) are associated with the increments in temperature inside the cloud. Similarly positive increments in temperatures inside the cloud are associated with the increments in temperature of its immediate environment at the same level or the layer immediately above. The maximum cloud lengths observed at Poona and Bombay respectively are 14 and 3 km. The horizontal cross-section of LWC showed a maximum number of 13 peaks in clouds at Poona while only 7 peaks were observed at Bombay. The location of maximum LWC in the horizontal cross-section is more or less at the centre of the cloud. The LWC profile showed an increase with height from the base of the cloud at Poona and Bombay. There is no marked variation of LWC with height at Rihand. The total droplet concentration at different altitudes at Poona and Bombay is in the range 28–82 cm?3. The size distribution of cloud droplets experienced a broadening effect with increase in height from the cloud base at Poona. The broadening effect at Bombay is not as marked as that at Poona. 相似文献
