This paper presents laboratory experiments and numerical simulations of effects of submerged obstacles on tsunami-like solitary wave and its run-up. This study was carried out for the breaking and non-breaking solitary waves on 1:19.85 uniform slope which contains a submerged obstacle. New laboratory experiments are performed to describe the mitigation of tsunami amplitude and run-up under the effect of submerged obstacles. We are based on experimental results obtained to validate the numerical model. The numerical modeling using COULWAVE aims essentially to show the effect of the obstacle on the shape of solitary wave and the limit of this effect. Using a multiple nonlinear regression, we have determined a model to estimate height of run-up according to the amplitude of the wave and the obstacle peak depth.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to investigate the behaviour of rainbow trout (n=30), Oncorhynchus mykiss, in small raceways when either self-feeders (T2) or hand-feeding (t2) were used. The method of food delivery in T2 was defensible while that of t2 was indefensible. Fish in both raceways were subjected to restricted feeding (RF) for 25 days. Food was available in the morning (09:00–10:00) in the downstream area and in the afternoon (16:00–17:00) in the upstream area of the raceways. The results showed that the behaviour of rainbow trout was significantly different under interference competition (T2) for food compared with that under scramble competition (t2). RF in T2 fish limited food availability to meal times when feeding rewards were available while t2 fish only responded to the location of food delivery. The aggressive fish in T2 were dominant, and t2 fish at high densities showed intense social interactions under the indefensible pattern of food distribution; these interactions did not dampen to a minimum level to suppress the development of dominance hierarchies. Further, the stocking density did not break down the dominance hierarchies between the T2 fish. This suggests that decreased efficiency in the search for food or inefficient foraging, induced by interference competition at high densities, affected the behaviour of rainbow trout.  相似文献

We evaluated tools and methods for in situ freezing of cores in unconsolidated subsurface media. Our approach, referred to as cryogenic core collection (C3), has key aspects that include downhole circulation of liquid nitrogen (LN) via a cooling system, strategic use of thermal insulation to focus cooling into the core, and controlling LN back pressure to optimize cooling. Two cooling systems (copper coil and dual‐wall cylinder) are described. For both systems, the time to freeze a single 2.5‐foot (76‐cm) long by 2.5‐inch (63‐mm) diameter core is 5 to 7 min. Frozen core collection rates of about 30 feet/day (10 m/day) were achieved at two field sites, one impacted by petroleum‐based light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) and the other by chlorinated solvents. Merits of C3 include (1) improved core recovery, (2) potential control of flowing sand, and (3) improved preservation of critical sediment attributes. Development of the C3 method creates novel opportunities to characterize sediment with respect to physical, chemical, and biological properties. For example, we were able to resolve water, LNAPL, and gas saturations above and below the water table. By eliminating drainage of water, gas and LNAPL saturations in the range of 6 to 23% and 1 to 3% of pore space, respectively, were measured in LNAPL‐impacted intervals below the water table.  相似文献

Locating additional drillholes based on information gathered from the initial drilling is a very difficult decision-making step in the process of detailed explorations. The most appropriate locations for additional drillholes are those wherein the information gathered from drilling has more value compared to that from other locations. From among the common methods proposed in information systems for measuring the information value, use of the “realistic value” is a very practical one. The realistic value of information is derived from measuring the differences in the decision makers’ performances when provided with different information sets. On this basis, a mathematical model has been proposed in this paper for optimal location of additional drillholes where the information gathered from drillholes has the highest possible value. Due to the combinatorial nature of this model, use has been made of a simulated annealing-based algorithm for its solution. The proposed model has been applied in Sungun copper deposit for locating additional drillholes; results have revealed that the model is valid.  相似文献

Frequency analysis of climate extreme events in Zanjan, Iran   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
In this study, generalized extreme value distribution (GEV) and generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) were fitted to the maximum and minimum temperature, maximum wind speed, and maximum precipitation series of Zanjan. Maximum (minimum) daily and absolute annual observations of Zanjan station from 1961 to 2011 were used. The parameters of the distributions were estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation method. Quantiles corresponding to 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years return periods were calculated. It was found that both candidate distributions fitted to extreme events series, were statistically reasonable. Most of the observations from 1961 to 2011 were found to fall within 1–10 years return period. Low extremal index (θ) values were found for excess maximum and minimum temperatures over a high threshold, indicating the occurrence of consecutively high peaks. For the purpose of filtering the dependent observations to obtain a set of approximately independent threshold excesses, a declustering method was performed, which separated the excesses into clusters, then the de-clustered peaks were fitted to the GPD. In both models, values of the shape parameters of extreme precipitation and extreme wind speed were close to zero. The shape parameter was less negative in the GPD than the GEV. This leads to significantly lower return period estimates for high extremes with the GPD model.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of indoor radon concentration measurements in 120 dwellings of district Sudhnuti of Azad Kashmir. Measurements were taken with CR-39 passive alpha track detector. CR-39 based box type radon detectors were installed in a bedroom and living rooms of each house. The detectors were retrieved after exposing to indoor radon for period of 6 months and then etched in 6 M NaOH at 80°C for 16 h, the observed track densities were converted in to the indoor radon concentration. Indoor radon concentration varied from 20 ± 12 to 170 ± 4 Bq m−3 for the houses of the district Sudhnuti. Arithmetic mean (AM), geometric mean (GM) and geometric standard deviations (GSD) were found to be 82 ± 6, 77 ± 6 and 1.51, respectively. The minimum value of weighted average radon concentration was recorded in one of the house of Mang town, whereas the maximum value was found in the Pattan Sher Khan region. Doses due to indoor radon exposure vary from 0.50 ± 0.31 to 4.28 ± 0.11 mSv year−1 AM, GM and GSD. of mean effective doses were found to be 2.06 ± 0.13, 1.95 ± 0.18 and 1.51, respectively. According to the recommendations made by the Health Protection Agency, UK (200 Bq m−3) all the houses surveyed are within the safe limits.  相似文献

Rainfall threshold (RT) method is one of the evolving flood forecasting approaches. When the cumulative rainfall depth for a given initial soil moisture condition intersects the threshold rainfall curve, the peak discharge is expected to be equal or greater than the threshold discharge for flooding at the target site. Besides the total rainfall depth, spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall impacts the flood peak discharge and the time to peak. To revisit a previous study conducted by the authors, in which spatially independent rainfall pattern was assumed, the spatial distribution of rainfall was simulated following a Monte Carlo approach. The structure of the spatial dependence among sub‐watersheds' rainfalls was taken into account under three different scenarios, namely independent, bivariate copula (2copula) and multivariate Gaussian copula (MGC). For each set of generated random dimensionless rainfalls, the probabilistic RT curves were derived for dry moisture condition. Results were evaluated with both historical and simulated events. For the simulated events, threshold curves were assessed by means of categorical statistics, such as hit rate, false rate and critical success index (CSI). Results revealed that the best performance based on the CSI criterion corresponded to 50% curve in 2copula and MGC scenarios as well as 90% curve in the independent scenario. The recognition of 50% curve in 2copula and MGC scenarios is in agreement with our expectations that the mean probable curve should have the best performance. Moreover, the proposed inclusion of spatially dependent rainfall scenario improved the performance of RT curves by about 25% in comparison with the presumed spatially uniform rainfall scenario. Unlike other branches of geosciences, exploratory drilling has not been investigated within the framework of an information system; so, the expression “value of exploratory drilling information” (despite its common usage) is vague. This article presents a model for the evaluation of value of the information gathered from exploratory drilling after studying different mineral exploration and exploratory drilling systems within the framework of an “information system.” Although this model does not present the economic value of information, it is a suitable tool for comparing different drilling patterns. The model was verified on the basis of drilling data for the Gol-Gohar XIIA anomaly.  相似文献
