This study developed a standard methodology for identifying spatial trends using satellite-based raster datasets. It involves the novelty of exploring the capabilities of a geographic information system in implementing the procedures of three trend tests, the Spearman rank order correlation (SROC) test, the Kendall rank correlation (KRC) test and the Mann-Kendall (MK) test, on raster datasets of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission at 0.25° × 0.25° resolution. Comparative evaluation of the three tests revealed fair agreement of a major part of the test results for pre-, post- and non-monsoon and one-day maximum rainfall. Also, similar results from KRC and MK tests were obtained over a considerable area for annual, monsoon and monthly maximum rainfall. These findings suggest the importance of selecting the appropriate test depending on rainfall magnitudes at the chosen time scale and emphasize the robustness of the KRC and MK tests. 相似文献

Life cycle of glaciers in the Himalayan region has notably changed due to the climatic variability since last few decades. Glaciers across the world and specially the Himalayan glaciers have shown large scale degeneration in the last few decades. Himalayan glaciers serve as an important fresh water resource for the downstream communities, who are dependent on this water for domestic and other purposes. Therefore, glacier shrinkage and the associated hydrological changes pose a significant problem for regional-scale water budgets and resource management. These issues necessitate the regular and rigorous monitoring of the wastage pattern of the Himalayan glaciers in field and using satellite remote sensing data. In this work, we report rapid and enhanced degeneration of the frontal part of the Kangriz glacier, Jammu and Kashmir (J & K), in terms of surface melting, debris cover, snout characteristics and meltwater discharge. Ablation data acquired during 2016–2017 shows the average lowering of the frontal part of the glacier to be ~148 ± 34 cm, one-third of which was found to have occurred within a 13 day time period in September, 2017. Also, the quantum of ice melt was found to be inversely influenced (r = -0.84) by the debris thickness. 15 day meltwater discharge measurement revealed its strong relationship with snout disintegration pattern, evidenced twice during the said time period. Volume of water discharged from the glacier was estimated to be 7.91×106 m3 for the measurement duration. Also, mean daily discharge estimated for the 15 days interval showed good positive correction (r = 0.78) with temperature indicating the direct dependency of the former on land surface temperature conditions of the region. Besides the lowering and discharge observations, the frequent ice-block break-offs at the glacier snout further enhance its overall drastic degeneration. The study suggests that, being the largest glacier in the Suru basin, the Kangriz glacier needs to be continuously monitored in order to understand its glacio-hydrological conditions. 相似文献

Using high-resolution Google EarthTM images in conjunction with Landsat images, the glaciers and lakes in the Baspa basin are classified to explore the recent changes. A total number of 109 glaciers (187 ± 3.7 km2) are mapped and subsequently classified as compound valley glaciers, simple valley glaciers, cirques, niches, glacieretes and ice aprons. The compound and simple valley glaciers contribute 67.1 ± 1.3% and 19.8 ± 0.3% to the total glacier cover of the basin. Similarly, a total number of 129 glacial lakes (0.360 ± 0.007 km2) are identified. From 1976 to 2011, the compound valley glaciers have lost a small area of 10.3 ± 0.03% at a rate of 0.41 ± 0.002 km2 a-1, whereas the niche glaciers have lost higher area of 40.1 ± 0.001% at a rate of 0.04 ± 0.0001 km2 a-1. Change detection of two benchmark glacial lakes revealed a progressive expansion during recent decades. The Baspa Bamak proglacial lake has expanded from 0.020 ± 0.0004 km2 (2000) to 0.069 ± 0.001 km2 (2011). Due to the complete loss of source ice, another glacial lake has expanded from 0.09 ± 0.001 km2 (1994) to 0.10 ± 0.002 km2 (2011). During the study period, the mean annual temperature that is Tavg, Tmin and Tmax have increased significantly at the 95% confidence level by 1.5 oC (0.070 °C a-1), 1.8 oC (0.076 °C a-1) and 1.6 oC (0.0071 °C a-1) from 1985 to 2008.
