Sulfate reducing conditions are widely observed in groundwater plumes associated with petroleum hydrocarbon releases. This leads to sulfate depletion in groundwater which can limit biodegradation of hydrocarbons (usually benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes [BTEX] compounds) and can therefore result in extended timeframes to achieve groundwater cleanup objectives by monitored natural attenuation. Under these conditions, sulfate addition to the subsurface can potentially enhance BTEX biodegradation and facilitate enhanced natural attenuation. However, a delivery approach that enables effective contact with the hydrocarbons and is able to sustain elevated and uniform sulfate concentrations in groundwater remains a key challenge. In this case study, sulfate addition to a groundwater plume containing predominantly benzene by land application of agricultural gypsum and Epsom salt is described. Over 4 years of groundwater monitoring data from key wells subjected to pilot‐scale and site‐wide land application events are presented. These are compared to data from pilot testing employing liquid Epsom salt injections as an alternate sulfate delivery approach. Sulfate land application, sulfate retention within the vadose zone, and periodic infiltration following ongoing precipitation events resulted in elevated sulfate concentrations (>150 mg/L) in groundwater that were sustained over 12 months between application events and stimulated benzene biodegradation as indicated by declines in dissolved benzene concentration, and compound‐specific isotope analysis data for carbon in benzene. Long‐term groundwater benzene concentration reductions were achieved in spite of periodic rebounds resulting from water table fluctuations across the smear zone. Land application of gypsum is a potentially cost‐effective sulfate delivery approach at sites with open, unpaved surfaces, relatively permeable geology, and shallow hydrocarbon impacts. However, more research is needed to understand the fate and persistence of sulfate and to improve the likelihood of success and effectiveness of this delivery approach.  相似文献

One of the key tasks to enable a regional risk assessment is to group structures with similar seismic performances and generate fragility curves representative of the grouped structures. The grouping has been traditionally performed based primarily on engineering judgment and prior experience. This paper (i) presents an overview of various statistical techniques such as analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, and Kruskal–Wallis test for grouping the bridges of similar performance; (ii) compares the groupings that emerge from the various grouping techniques; and (iii) identifies the method that has more statistical power in creating bridge sub‐classes of distinct structural performance. The grouping is achieved by comparing the structural responses of bridge classes obtained from the non‐linear time history analysis of bridges. The relative merits of these grouping techniques are discussed with the case study of box‐girder bridges in California. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Aeolian processes – the erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment by wind – play important geomorphological and ecological roles in drylands. These processes are known to impact the spatial patterns of soil, nutrients, plant-available water, and vegetation in many dryland ecosystems. Tracers, such as rare earth elements and stable isotopes have been successfully used to quantify the transport and redistribution of sediment by aeolian processes in these ecosystems. However, many of the existing tracer techniques are labor-intensive and cost-prohibitive, and hence simpler alternative approaches are needed to track aeolian redistribution of sediments. To address this methodological gap, we test the applicability of a novel metal tracer-based methodology for estimating post-fire aeolian sediment redistribution, using spatio-temporal measurements of low-field magnetic susceptibility (MS). We applied magnetic metal tracers on soil microsites beneath shrub vegetation in recently burned and in control treatments in a heterogeneous landscape in the Chihuahuan desert (New Mexico, USA). Our results indicate a spatially homogeneous distribution of the magnetic tracers on the landscape after post-burn wind erosion events. MS decreased after wind erosion events on the burned shrub microsites, indicating that these areas functioned as sediment sources following the wildfire, whereas they are known to be sediment sinks in the undisturbed (e.g. not recently burned) ecosystem. This experiment represents the first step toward the development of a cost-effective and non-destructive tracer-based approach to estimate the transport and redistribution of sediment by aeolian processes. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Sliding isolators with curved surface are effective base isolation systems incorporating isolation, energy dissipation and restoring mechanism in one unit. However, practical utility of these systems, such as friction pendulum system (FPS) has limitations due to constant isolator period and restoring force characteristics. A new isolator called the variable frequency pendulum isolator (VFPI) that overcomes these limitations while retaining all the advantages has been described in this paper. VFPI has oscillation frequency decreasing with sliding displacement, and the restoring force has an upper bound so that the force transmitted to the structure is limited. The mathematical formulations for the response of a SDOF structure and energy balance are also described. Parametric studies have been carried out to critically examine the behaviour of structures isolated with VFPI, FPS and PF system. From these investigations, it is concluded that the VFPI combines the advantages of both FPS and PF system, without their undesirable properties. The VFPI performance is also found to be stable during low‐intensity excitations, and fail‐safe during high‐intensity excitations. VFPI is found to exhibit robust performance for a wide range of structure, isolator and ground motion characteristics clearly demonstrating its advantages. Mars is the only extraterrestrial body which could host primitive lifeforms and also has the potential to host a human base in the near future. Towards fulfilling these objectives, several remote sensing missions and rover based missions have been sent to Mars. Still, confirmation of existing or extinct life on this planet in any form has not been achieved and possibly human missions at selected sites in the future are the key to addressing this problem. Here, we have used remote sensing data from Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter(MRO; NASA), Mars Global Surveyor(MGS; NASA), Mars Odyssey(NASA) and Mars Express(MEX; ESA) to devise an exploration strategy for one such area known as Hebrus Valles, which is a potential site for human exploration of the surface of Mars. A geological context map of the Hebrus Valles and Hephaestus Fossae region has been prepared and a candidate landing site has been proposed in the Hebrus Valles region. Suitable rover paths have been worked out from the proposed landing site for harnessing the science and resource potential of the region. The proposed landing site is located in the equatorial region at(20?40′N, 126?23′E) and due to its proximity to the Potential Subsurface Access Candidates(PSACs) in the region, such as sinkholes and skylights and also other resources such as crater ejecta, silicate material and fluvial channels, the site is appropriate for exploration of the region.  相似文献
