Summary In this study, we have analyzed the temporal oscillations of precipitation in meso-scale zones of Sri Lanka to examine potential existence of periodic oscillatory behavior in rainfall. Only a few statistically significant cycles were identified: a 3.5-year cycle in most of central Sri Lanka during the January–March rainfall regime and a cycle of the same length in southwestern Sri Lanka during the October regime. A 2.1-year cycle marks the northeastern parts of Sri Lanka during the December/April contrast rainfall regime. This cycle is shown to be strongly related to Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. October and November rainfall are found to be coupled with ENSO fluctuations, and on average, more than 900 mm more rainfall is observed per month over all stations during El Ni?o than during La Ni?a years. Analysis of relationships between the observed meso-scale rainfall regions and the Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) in the Indian Ocean north of the Equator showed that the northern Indian Ocean can be divided into three particular regions based on similarity in the SST fluctuations: (a) a region with cool upwelling water, (b) non upwelling water, and (c) the Indian Ocean Warm Pool. We found that there are no statistically significant relationships between the observed SST regions in the Indian Ocean and the meso-scale precipitation patterns in Sri Lanka.  相似文献

A methodology to estimate a methane emission in a waste landfill site was developed. The methane flux at a waste landfill site in summer, autumn, and winter was within the following ranges: from −1.3×10−2 to 16, from −6.4×10−2 to 7.5, and from −1.6×10−3 to 1.5×10−2 g-CH4 m−2 h−1, respectively. In those seasons, the mean methane emission rate and coefficient of variation were 1.1 g-CH4 m−2 h−1 ±290%, 0.57 g-CH4 m−2 h−1 ±347%, and 5.4×10−2 g-CH4 m−2 h−1 ±370%, respectively. These results simultaneously showed that fluctuations of methane emission from the landfill surface were both of spatial and temporal variability. In each season, an exponential relationship was observed between the methane flux density and the ground temperature. Total methane emissions were estimated to be 5.7×10−2, 7.1×10−3, and 1.7×10−3 g-CH4 m−2 h−1 in the summer, autumn, and winter surveys, respectively, using a temperature surrogated-kriging method. The results of this study would improve upon the labor-intensive closed-chamber method, and could be a more practical way to estimate methane emissions from waste landfills.  相似文献

This paper presents a new formulation for critical damping of structures with elastically supported visco‐elastic dampers.Owing to the great dependence of damper performance on the support stiffness, this model is inevitable for reliable modelling of structures with visco‐elastic dampers. It is shown that the governing equation of free vibration of this model is reduced to a third‐order differential equation and the conventional method for defining the critical damping for second‐order differential equations cannot be applied to the present model. It is demonstrated that the region of overdamped vibration is finite in contrast to that (semi‐infinite) for second‐order differential equations and multiple critical damping coefficients exist.  Phase transitions in MgAl2O4 spinel have been studied at pressures 22–38 GPa, and at temperatures up to 1600 °C, using a combination of synchrotron radiation and a multianvil apparatus with sintered diamond anvils. Spinel dissociated into a mixture of MgO plus Al2O3 at pressures to 25 GPa, while it transformed to the CaFe2O4 (calcium ferrite) structure at higher pressures via the metastably formed oxide mixture upon increasing temperature. Neither the e-phase nor the CaTi2O4-type MgAl2O4, which were reported in earlier studies using the diamond-anvil cell, were observed in the present pressure and temperature range. The zero-pressure bulk modulus of the calcium-ferrite-type MgAl2O4 was calculated as K=213 (3) GPa, which is significantly lower than that reported by Yutani et al. (1997), but is consistent with a more recent result by Funamori et al. (1998) and that estimated by an ab initio calculation by Catti (2001).  One well-defined OH Raman band at 3651 ± 1 cm−1 and one weak feature near 3700 ± 5 cm−1 are recognized for the hydrous γ-phase of Mg2SiO4. Like the hydrous β-phase, the H2O content in the γ-phase shifts most of the corresponding silicate modes towards lower frequencies. Variations in Raman spectra of the hydrous γ-phase were investigated up to about 200 kbar at room temperature and in the range 81–873 K at atmospheric pressure. Unlike the anhydrous γ-phase, which remains intact up to at least 873 K, the hydrous γ-phase sometimes converts to a defective forsterite structure above 800 K. Although the hydrous γ-phase remains intact up to at least 800 K, Raman signals of the OH bands disappear completely above 423 K. The Raman frequency of the well-defined OH band decreases linearly with increasing temperature between 81 and 423 K. In the region of the silicate vibrations, the Raman frequencies of the two most intense bands increase nonlinearly with increasing pressure, and decrease with increasing temperature. The frequencies for all other weak bands, however, decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The latter most likely reflects the larger scatter of the data for the weak bands. High-frequency measurements of dibromomethane (CH2Br2) and bromoform (CHBr3) at Hateruma Island, in the subtropical East China Sea, were performed using automated preconcentration gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Their baseline concentrations, found in air masses from the Pacific Ocean, were 0.65 and 0.26 ppt, respectively, in summer and 1.08 and 0.87 ppt, respectively, in winter. Air masses transported from Southeast Asia were rich in bromocarbons, suggesting strong emissions in this area. The passage of cold fronts from the Asian continent was associated with sharp increases in observed concentrations of bromocarbons derived from coastal regions of the continent. Comparison of the relationships between [CH2Br2]/[CHBr3] and [CHBr3] in the Hateruma Island data with those in monthly mean data from 14 globally distributed U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ground stations suggested that these gases are produced primarily from a common process on a global scale.  相似文献

The mixing processes in the Mixed Water Region (MWR) that lead to changes in the properties of North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) have been studied using observational data sets obtained in May–June 1998. Neutral surfaces, the equation of water mass conversion rate on neutral surfaces and the equation of vertical velocity across neutral surfaces have been used to distinguish dominant processes by assuming the horizontal scale to be the streamer scale (under 100 km). The possibility of double diffusive convection is also discussed in relation to the density ratio. These results may be summarized as follows: (1) the difference between the potential density surface and the neutral surface may rise to −0.04 kg/m3 around the source water of NPIW; (2) horizontal diffusion causes strong modifications of the source water of NPIW; (3) the density range within which strong modification of the source water of NPIW occurs becomes dense from the northern part of MWR near the Oyashio Front to the southern part near the Kuroshio Front, and to the eastern part. Our modeling of these processes shows that cabbeling has effects on the density increment of the source water of NPIW in the northern and southern part of MWR. Double diffusive convection has effects on the density increment of the source water of NPIW, mainly in the northern part of MWR. The possible density increment due to cabbeling in these areas is estimated to be 0.01≈0.03 kg/m3. The possible density increment due to double diffusive convection is 0.01≈0.03 kg/m3. The total density increment due to cabbeling and double diffusive convection amounts to 0.06 kg/m3. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We observed the partial pressure of oceanic CO2, pCO2 sea, and related surface properties in the westernmost region of the subarctic North Pacific, seasonally from 1998 to 2001. The pCO2 sea in the Oyashio region showed a large decrease from winter to spring. In winter, pCO2 sea was higher than 400 μatm in the Oyashio region and this region was a source of atmospheric CO2. In spring, pCO2 sea decreased to extremely low values, less than 200 μatm (minimum, 139 μatm in 2001), around the Oyashio region with low surface salinity and this region turned out to be a strong sink. The spatial variations of pCO2 sea were especially large in spring in this region. The typical Oyashio water with minimal mixing with subtropical warm water was extracted based on the criterion of potential alkalinity. The contribution of main oceanic processes to the changes in pCO2 sea from winter to spring was estimated from the changes in the concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon and nutrients, total alkalinity, temperature and salinity observed in surface waters in respective years. These quantifications indicated that photosynthesis made the largest contribution to the observed pCO2 sea decreases in all years and its magnitude was variable year by year. These year-to-year differences in spring biological contribution could be linked to those in the development of the density stratification due to the decrease in surface salinity. Thus, the changes in the surface physical structure could induce those in pCO2 sea in the Oyashio region in spring. Furthermore, it is suggested that the direction and magnitude of the air-sea CO2 flux during this season could be controlled significantly by the onset time of the spring bloom.
