A major task in developing a management strategy for the Baltic Sea will be the establishment of a program that adheres to the philosophy of sustainable use and is capable of implementation. For many nations this has proven to be a very difficult task marked with successes and failures. This paper discusses North Carolina's attempts to move toward sustainability in its Albemarle and Pamlico estuaries. Abstract— Laboratory comet simulation experiments are discussed in the context of theoretical models and recent ground-based and spacecraft observations, especially the Giotto observations of P/Halley. The set-up of various comet simulation experiments is reviewed. A number of small-scale experiments have been performed in many laboratories since the early 1960s. However, the largest and most ambitious series of experiments were the comet simulation experiments known as KOSI (German = Kometen Simulation). These experiments were prompted by the appearance of Comet P/Halley in 1986 and in planning for the European Space Agency's Rossetta mission that was originally scheduled to return samples. They were performed between 1987 and 1993 using the German Space Agency's (DLR) space hardware testing facilities in Cologne. As with attempts to reproduce any natural phenomenon in the laboratory, there are deficiencies in such experiments while there are major new insights to be gained. Simulation experiments have enabled the development of methods for making comet analogues and for exploring the properties of such materials in detail. These experiments have provided new insights into the morphology and physical behavior of aggregates formed from silicate grains likely to exist in comets. Formation of a dust mantle on the surfaces and a system of ice layers below the mantle caused by chemical differentiation have been identified after the insolation of the artificial comet. The mechanisms for heat transfer between the comet's surface and its interior, the associated gas diffusion from the interior of the surface, and compositional, structural, and isotopic changes that occur near the surface have been described by modeling the experimental results. The mechanisms of the ejection of dust and ice grains from the surface and the importance of gas-drag in propelling grains have also been explored. 相似文献

We analyze the chemical composition and abundances of comets based on in situ measurements of Comet 1P/Halley and remote sensing observations of several recent bright comets including Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) and Hyakutake (C/1996 B2), in light of the elemental abundances of the solar system. Nitrogen is underabundant in comets relative to the solar system because nitrogen tends to be in N2, which is chemically relatively inert. While many details remain uncertain, some gross features are emerging. The abundance of water : silicates: carbonaceous molecules (CO, CO2, and hydrocarbons) by mass is approximately 1 : 1 : 1. Furthermore, the mass abundance of ice : dust (silicates and hydrocarbon polycondensates) is about1 : 1. We compare a list of identified comet molecules with molecules detected in the interstellar medium, although a comparison with their relative abundances, particularly in the ice phase, would be more meaningful. However, ice-phase abundances are not yet available. One can expect a variation of the abundances of carbon-bearing molecules in comets to be associated with their place of origin in the solar nebula. However, we also note that comets are heterogeneous. Thus, observed differences may be related to the place of origin, heterogeneity of the nucleus, or acquired through evolution. The molecular and elemental compositions of the coma are most likely not the same as those in the nucleus. This is particularly true for volatile ices and their gases and for the dust-to-ice and dust-to-gas ratios. Analyses must carefully consider the three sources of gas: Water from the surface of the nucleus, gases more volatile than water from the interior of the nucleus, and gases from the sublimation of the dust distributed in the coma. Topography on the surface of the nucleus may cause important evolutionary differences in the dust-to-gas mass ratio. Relatively inactive areas on the surface of the nucleus are probably associated with convex topography. Gas sublimated from convex areas (hills and mountains) diverges more strongly relative to gas sublimated from concave areas, which can entrain dust more efficiently. Thus, the entrainment of dust from convex areas is poor and dust may fall back to the surface of the nucleus creating a dust mantle, which further inhibits outgassing. 相似文献

In mafic granulites, garnet can form by reactions such as Opx + Pl = Cpx + Grt + Qtz; Opx + Pl = Grt + Qtz. As a result of isothermal decompression (ITD), garnet can then break down to a characteristic orthopyroxene-plagioclase symplectite. Mafic, iron-rich garnet-pyroxene granulite from the Guaxupé Massif has symplectite that formed by near-isothermal decompression, as a consequence of uplift of the granulite facies terrane. This symplectite was found to consist of vermicular clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene-plagioclase, with clinopyroxene clearly growing from the garnet that is breaking down, modal amounts of clinopyroxene being less than orthopyroxene. Electron probe analyses show clear differences between core (Cpx1), rim, and symplectite clinopyroxene (Cpx2). Considering also the presence of magnetite in the symplectite texture, garnet breakdown is thought to be better represented by a reaction such as Cpx1 + Grt + O2 = Cpx2 + Opx + Pl +Mt + Qtz. 相似文献

Lattice preferred orientations (LPOs) of quartz were used to establish differences in deformation geometry, finite strain, and temperature within a transpressional collision zone within the Panafrican Orogen in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Metamorphic and/or magmatic core complexes in the area are bordered in the NW and SW by ductile sinistral NW-trending strike-slip zones and low angle normal faults (LANFs). Simultaneous activity of both fault systems suggests bulk W–E shortening coeval with orogen-parallel extension. Displacement partitioned into orogen-parallel sinistral strike-slip faults and LANFs. This study compares both quartz-LPOs in shear-zones and normal faults.From south to north, quartz c-axis data show a continuous evolution along orogen-parallel strike-slip faults from maxima in Y, with a slight tendency to oblique single girdles at the margins of the Wadi Beitan and Hafafit complexes, to asymmetric crossed girdles and oblique single girdles along the margins of the Sibai and Meatiq complexes. The NW-directed LANFs to the NW of the Hafafit and the SE-directed LANFs to the SE of the Sibai show maxima in Y. The SE-directed LANF at the SE margin of the Meatiq complex shows symmetric crossed girdles, indicating coaxial deformation geometry.Oblique single girdles and maxima in Y occur in the southern part of the orogen, whereas crossed girdle distributions dominate in the northern part. The variation in quartz c-axis patterns is explained in terms of decreasing metamorphic grade during deformation from the S (medium to high grade) to the N (low grade), and decreasing finite strain. This is in accordance with the general progression of transpressional tectonics and exhumation of core complexes from S to N. 相似文献

Greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector account for only 4% of the total production, with wastewater management accounting for accurately 8 to 10% of this contribution. Wastewater disposal and treatment activities, mainly contributes to non‐CO2 gases such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Capturing or avoiding these emissions is thus both a concern and an opportunity. The clean development mechanism (CDM) offers an instrument to internalize global climate concerns into the design of wastewater treatment facilities. Properly designed facilities could improve effluent quality and optimize the abatement of greenhouse gas emissions, thus ensuring additional revenues to pay for capital, operation and maintenance costs and possibly justify higher levels of wastewater treatment. This document summarizes the experience of the “Rio Frio CDM project” in Colombia, as an example of what is achievable through the CDM application in wastewater treatment upgrade in developing countries. This study evaluates the on use of crushed rocks(remineralizers)to increase soil fertility levels and which contributed to increase agricultural productivity,recovery of degraded areas,decontamination of water,and carbon sequestration.The use of these geological materials is part of the assumptions of rock technology and,indirectly,facilitates the achievement of sustainable development goals related to soil management,climate change,and the preservation of water resources.Research over the past 50 years on silicate rocks focused on soil fertility management and agricultural productivity.More recently,the combined use with microorganisms and organic correctives have shown positive results to mitigate soil degradation;to expand carbon sequestration and storage;and to contribute to the adsorption of contaminants from water and soil.In this article we show results obtained in several countries and we show that this technology can contribute to the sustainability of agriculture,as well as to reverse global warming.Although mineral nutrients are released more slowly from these types of inputs,they remain in the soil for a longer time,stimulating the soil biota.In addition,they are a technology to soluble synthetic fertilizers replace,since the few nutrients derived from such inputs not consumed by plants are lost by leaching,contaminating groundwater and water resources.In addition,conventional methods rely heavily on chemical pesticides which cause damage to soil’s microfauna(responsible for the decomposition of organic matter and nutrient cycling)and the loss of organic carbon(in the form of dioxide),which is quickly dispersed in the atmosphere.Silicate rock powders are applied in natura,have long-lasting residual effects and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 相似文献

The ceramics industry,resulting from developments of modern compounds,is a segment of great influence in worldwide sustainability.Artisanal ceramic factories based on wood combustion have significant risks for the creation and discharge of atmosphere nanoparticles(NPs)and ultra-fine particles(UFPs).At present,there is insufficient recognition on the influence of engineered-NPs on the atmosphere and health.Real improvements are indispensable to diminish contact with NPs.The present study demonstrates the main NPs and UFPS present in an area of intense artisanal wood-combustion ceramic manufacturing.Particulate matter was sampled for morphological,chemical,and geochemical studies by sophisticated electron microbeam microscopy,X-Ray Diffraction,and Raman spectroscopy.From NPs configuration(<10 nm)we identify nucleation.Several amorphous NPs(>10 nm)were produced around the studied artisanal ceramic factories.This study presents an indication of the recent information on population and work-related contact to NPs in the artisanal ceramic factories and their influence on health. 相似文献

Physical modelling of cracked/fractured media using downscaled laboratory experiments has been used with great success as a useful alternative for understanding the effect of anisotropy in the hydrocarbon reservoir characterization and in the crustal and mantle seismology. The main goal of this work was to experimentally verify the predictions of effective elastic parameters in anisotropic cracked media by Hudson and Eshelby–Cheng's effective medium models. For this purpose, we carried out ultrasonic measurements on synthetic anisotropic samples with low crack densities and different aspect ratios. Twelve samples were prepared with two different crack densities, 5% and 8%. Three samples for each crack density presented cracks with only one crack aspect ratio, whereas other three samples for each crack density presented cracks with three different aspect ratios in their composition. It results in samples with aspect ratio values varying from 0.13 to 0.26. All the cracked samples were simulated by penny‐shaped rubber inclusions in a homogeneous isotropic matrix made with epoxy resin. Moreover, an isotropic sample for reference was constructed with epoxy resin only. Regarding velocity predictions performed by the theoretical models, Eshelby–Cheng shows a better fit when compared with the experimental results for samples with single and mix crack aspect ratio (for both crack densities). From velocity values, our comparisons were also performed in terms of the ε, γ, and δ parameters (Thomsen parameters). The results show that Eshelby–Cheng effective medium model fits better with the measurements of ε and γ parameters for crack samples with only one type of crack aspect ratio. 相似文献
