In fact,the popular semi-implicit time difference scheme of spectral model still includes someimportant linear terms using time explicit difference scheme,and the major terms are directlyrelated to fast internal-and external-gravity waves in the atmospheric forecasting equation.Additionally,due to using time difference on two terms at different time.the popular schemeartificially introduces unbalance between pressure gradient force and Coriolis force terms whilenumerically computing their small difference between large quantities.According to thecomputational stability analysis conducted to the linear term time difference scheme in simpleharmonic motion equation,one improved semi-implicit time difference scheme is also designed inour study.By adopting a kind of revised time-explicit-difference scheme to these linear terms thatstill included in spectral model governing equations,the defect of spectral model which only partlyusing semi-implicit integrating scheme can be overcome effectively.Moreover,besides all spectralcoefficients of prognostic equations,especially of Helmholtz divergence equation,can be workedout without any numerical iteration,the time-step (computation stability) can also be enlarged(enhanced) by properly introducing an adjustable coefficient. 相似文献

Lanai is the third smallest of the fifteen principal subaerial shield volcanoes of the Hawaiian hotspot. This volcano apparently became extinct during the shield-building stage of volcanism, as shown by the absence of both alkalic cap and post-erosional lavas. Major and trace element analyses of 22 new samples collected primarily from 3 stratigraphic sections show that Lanai tholeiites span a large range in composition. Some Lanai lavas are unique geochemically among Hawaiian tholeiites in having the lowest abundances of incompatible trace elements of any Hawaiian lavas and well-developed positive Eu anomalies. The geochemical characteristics of these low-abundance Lanai tholeiites are not the result of alteration, differences in mantle source modal mineralogy, the presence of residual accessory mantle phases or fractional crystallization of such phases, assimilation of depleted [MORB] wall-rock, or accumulation/resorption of phenocrysts or xenocrysts. Incompatible trace element ratios (e.g., Nb/La, Nb/Th, La/Th, La/Hf, Ce/Pb) in Lanai tholeiites span considerable ranges and form coherent trends with each other and with absolute abundances of these elements. Large variations in La/Sm, La/Yb, and absolute REE abundances at constant MgO suggest that Lanai tholeiites formed by variable amounts of partial melting. However, large ranges in incompatible element ratios cannot be explained solely by variations in partial melting of a geochemically homogeneous source, but must reflect geochemical heterogeneities in the Lanai source. Partial melting modeling indicates that the mixed Lanai source is probably LREE-enriched [i.e., (La/Yb)CN>1]. One component in the Lanai source, exemplified by the low-abundance tholeiites, has markedly lower REE/HFSE, Th/HFSE, alkali/HFSE, and Ce/Pb ratios than other Lanai or Hawaiian tholeiites and may indicate the presence of recycled residual subduction zone materials in the Hawaiian plume source. The positive Eu anomalies that characterize the low-abundance Lanai tholeiites are not the result of plagioclase accumulation or assimilation but are a feature of this source component. Progressive temporal geochemical variations in Lanai tholeiites from 2 stratigraphic sections indicate that the source composition of these lavas probably evolved over time. This change could have resulted from a progressive decrease in the extent of partial melting of the Lanai source. The compositional variability of Lanai tholeiites suggests that geochemical heterogeneities in their source are larger than the scale of partial melting. Lanai tholeiites could not have formed by smaller degrees of partial melting of plume material than did the larger-volume Hawaiian shields. Therefore, volume differences between Hawaiian shields must be controlled primarily by differences in the volume of supplied plume material rather than by differences in the degree of partial melting. The premature cessation of eruptive activity at Lanai may be attributed to relatively large degrees of partial melting of a small plume. 相似文献

Archaean volcanic rocks and volcanogenic sediments exposed in a regional syncline south of Meekatharra, Western Australia are described. Initial volcanic activity produced a suite of high-Mg basalts containing 10–19% MgO. Pillowed tholeiitic basalts overlie the high-Mg basalts. These lower units are thought to have been derived from a central fracture zone. The uppermost units consist of volcanogenic sediments interlayered with andesite and dacite flows which appear to have been derived from a marginal andesite pile to the east. The Archaean sequence has been tightly folded, cross-faulted and intruded by post-Archaean dykes.The central succession is predominantly submarine, although the marginal andesite pile may be in part subaerial. Whilst there are some similarities with the Marda complex to the southeast (Hallberg et al., 1976), the rocks near Meekatharra are more analogous to those associated with modern island arcs. 相似文献

A comparative analysis of repeated geodetic leveling data was made along nine subparallel, E—NE-trending leveling lines located in the central to northern Sierra Nevada and the eastern Central Valley. The analysis was made to identify relative changes of elevation and evaluate these changes with respect to the regional geology and tectonics. The analysis used National Geodetic Survey first- and second-order, unadjusted, observed elevations.The relative changes in elevation indicate that crustal deformation is continuing to occur in the Sierra Nevada along pre-existing zones of crustal weakness and that this deformation is localized along some strands of Late Cenozoic faulting within the Mesozoic Foothills fault system. This deformation is characterized by variable and nonunifor westward tilt of the Sierran block west of the Melones fault zone, and relatively consistent eastward tilt of the Sierran block east of the Melones fault zone. Variable elevation changes occur within the Foothills fault system and are often associated with prominent geological or structural contacts. In addition, subsidence in the Central Valley appears to be of small magnitude and localized in extent, indicating nontectonic changes in elevation problably due to compaction of unconsolidated sediments. 相似文献

From August to October, 1976, La Soufrière de Guadeloupe was observed, and recorded with an automated sequence camera and numerous handheld cameras. During the period of observation, the nature of volcanic activity ranged from mild steam emission to moderately energetic phreatic eruptions. Background fumarolic activity (steam emission) was characterized by the emission of generally tephra-free steam clouds 50 to 150 m above the summit. The clouds rose buoyantly above the vent and were blown downwind at prevailing wind velocities. Phreatic eruptions were well-documented on September 22, October 2, and October 4. In the latter two eruptions, small bursts of tephra-laden steam erupted at intervals of 30 to 45 min, and rose from 350 to 500 m above the summit. In the largest observed eruption, that of October 2, the steam and tephra cloud rose to a maximum height of 600 to 650 m in 20 min. A white vapor cloud and a medium gray, tephra-laden cloud were erupted simultaneously from the summit vent and both were surrounded by a vapor collar: the clouds were thoroughly mixed within 1 km downwind of the summit. The concurrent growth of clouds from separate vents (summit and flank) implies a common source. Simultaneous eruption of tephra-free and tephra-laden clouds from the same vent is puzzling and implies: (i) lateral changes in the degree of alteration of dome rocks along the elongate vent, hence erodability of the dome lavas, or (ii) differences in the gas velocities. These «mixed» clouds moved westward, downwind and downslope as a density current, along the watersheds of the R. Noire and R. des Pères with an approximate velocity of 10 to 25 m/sec. Upon reaching the sea the clouds continued to move forward, but at a decreased velocity, and spread laterally, having left behind the restrictions of valley walls. A thin gray veneer of moist tephra, ranging from several cm thick near the dome to less than 1 mm thick several km downwind, was deposited along a narrow corridor southwest of the summit. Tephra from the phreatic eruptions consisted mostly of hydrothermally altered lithic, mineral, and glass fragments derived from dome lavas; no fresh (juvenile) pyroclasts were present in the tephra. Absence of juvenile tephra at La Soufrière supports the view that activity was due to groundwater circulating in a vapor-dominated geothermal system, probably driven by a shallow heat source. At La Soufrière, most vapor-dominated systems are located in elevated areas of groundwater recharge where groundwater movement is downward and outward. The sporadic phreatic eruptions may be related to the rate of recharge of meteoric waters within the dome, the decrease in pore pressure during fortnightly tidal minimums or both. Whatever the triggering mechanism, vapor-dominated fluids eroded vent walls during phreatic eruptions and carried out fine-grained, hydrothermally altered, pre-existing dome material as tephra. 相似文献

Experiments have been carried out to determine the effect of joints on the propagation of P-waves in specimens of both weak and strong rocks; in particular the effect of normal stress on the transmission of P-waves in jointed rock was studied. These experiments were supported by measurements of seismic wave velocity carried out in tunnels driven in Lower Chalk and Carboniferous strata. The laboratory tests showed that relatively small normal stresses are sufficient to close joints acoustically and this was confirmed by the tunnel site observations. The results show that the interpretation of seismic data for the exploration of engineering sites may be improved by allowing for effects which result in the acoustic closure of joints. 相似文献

The ubiquitous occurrence of charcoal in the forest soils of the Upper Rio Negro region of Colombia and Venezuela indicates the presence of frequent and widespread fires in the Amazon Basin, possibly associated with extremely dry periods or human disturbances. Charcoal ranged from 3.12 to 24.76 mg/cm3 in the upper 50 cm of soil and was more abundant in Oxisols and Ultisols than in other soil types. Charcoal dates range from 6260 yr B.P. to the present. Several dates coincide with dry phases recorded during the Holocene. Ceramic shards were found at several sites, and thermoluminescence analysis indicates that their ages range from 3750 to 460 yr B.P. The age of charcoal and shards confirms that this region has been subjected to fire and human disturbances during the past 6000 yr. 相似文献
