The paper analyses the statistical parameters of the sand grain size distribution of Al-Ubaylah barchan dunes applying the sieving technique and Folk and Ward, and Trask's equation. The results of the sieving analysis divulged that nearly over 90% of the sand particles fall in the size ranging between 1.50ø and 3.ø. Insignificant amount of sand grains also fall in the size ranging from 0.0ø to 1.50ø and from 3.0ø to 4.0ø respectively. The statistical analysis reveals that the sand is characteristically fine grained, moderately to moderately well sorted with an average diameter of 2.4ø and a standard deviation of 0.64ø. The sand distribution is positively fine skewed and mesokurtic to leptokurtic in nature. No significant variation in the statistical parameters (median, mean, sorting, skewness and kurtosis) of the sand grains samples used in this research is detected. The sand grain size distribution of all the samples can also be considered symmetrical and unimodal in nature. Those abovementioned characteristics are found to be nearly similar to that of other Saudi dune deserts. The miscroscopic investigation undertaken by this researcher displays that quartz represents often more than 99% of the samples. Felsic, mafic and calcium carbonates minerals represent less than 1% of the mineralogical constituents. The sand grains are subrounded to subangular and iron and calcium carbonates coated.  相似文献

A comparative study of methane recovery by co-digesting kitchen waste and saline sewage sludge is performed to evaluate its feasibility for waste minimization. The experiment is performed at 37 °C having a mixing speed of 100 rpm and pH of 6.49–7.5 in anaerobic mixed batch reactors. The higher salinity level of the saline sewage sludge reduces the degradation rate of kitchen waste causing an enhancement in soluble chemical oxygen demand by 133% compared with 280% when co-digesting with the non-saline sample. The inhibitory behavior is in line with the low volatile solid elimination efficiency of 31% of saline against 55% of non-saline sludge. The Gompertz modeling, based on the outcomes, fits the cumulative methane generation trends quite well, with a strong correlation coefficient (>0.994). Besides, use of the non-saline sludge results in three times more methane production than the saline sample digestion. Sludge recovery is 0.07 m3 sludge m−3 wastewater, and water recovery is 0.84 m3 m−3 wastewater. The liquid produced from the fermentation of the slurry can be used for irrigation as well as fertilization. Kitchen waste co-digestion with both sludge samples has been proven to be a practical method for exploiting the extra digestion capacity of wastewater treatment plants currently in operation, but it is more practical for non-saline sludge.  相似文献

This work investigates the seasonal, long-term and time-dependence properties of the precipitation process using daily precipitation amount records in Calgary and develops occurrence–amount models which capture the complex properties of the process. Data show that: (a) the probability of precipitation occurrence not only depends on the occurrence of the previous days, but also depends on the amount values. Moreover this dependence varies with season. (b) The expected amount and its volatility depend on the occurrence as well as the amount on the previous days—these dependencies reveal seasonal patterns. (c) There is a strong long-term dependence in Calgary’s data. The proposed models in this work satisfy these properties. A large set of covariates is built to capture the complexity of various properties of the precipitation process. A grouped sequential model selection approach is used to pick the appropriate covariates which works by assigning the predictors to various groups and sequentially exploring them. This framework is assessed by comparing the simulations from the models to the observed data. This confirms a satisfactory agreement.  相似文献

The construction of a Giant Sea Wall (GSW) complex in Jakarta Bay has been proposed to protect Jakarta against flood in the Master Plan for National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD). However, these large-scale hydraulic structures could significantly change the tidal dynamics in Jakarta Bay. This research investigates the potential impacts of a GSW on the tidal dynamics, including tides, currents, and residual currents in Jakarta Bay using a validated numerical model (Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM)). Results show that the bay is diurnal with a maximum tidal range of ~0.9 m. The flow is mainly in an east-west direction with a maximum depth-mean current speed of up to 0.3 ms?1. The construction of a GSW would modulate the tidal dynamics by changing the bathymetry, tidal prism, wind effect, and tidal choking effect in the bay. The maximum tidal range would be slightly increased due to the reduced tidal prism of the bay and the increased tidal choking effect. The current would penetrate into the west reservoir through the gates and channels between the artificial islands, with peak speed jets appearing at the gates (~0.3 ms?1), due to tidal choking. A similar peak current speed appears near the right wing of the GSW due to the pressure gradient would be created by the wing of the GSW. Closing the gates would mainly affect the currents inside the west reservoir. The residual current would be slightly increased after the construction of the GSW. An eddy would be formed at the bottom level near the right wing of the GSW. The direction of the residual current is landward instead of seaward at the surface level outside the GSW. The impact of wind on surface currents would be much reduced due to the decreased water surface area. Although this study is site specific, the findings may have a wider applicability to the impacts of large-scale hydraulic structures on tidal dynamics in open-type bays.  相似文献

Two formulae are developed for estimating horizontal permeability directly from maps of 4D seismic signatures. The choice of the formula used depends on whether the seismic is dominated by changes of pressure or saturation. However, pressure derived from time‐lapse seismic, or seismic amplitudes controlled predominantly by pressure are to be preferred for optimal ‘illumination’ of the reservoir. The permeability is predicted to be dependent on porosity but weighted by a 4D term related to the magnitude and spatial gradient of the 4D signature. Tests performed on model‐based synthetic seismic data affirm the validity and accuracy of this approach. Application to field data from the UK continental shelf reveals a large‐scale permeability variation similar to the existing simulation model, but with additional fine‐scale detail. The technique thus has the potential of providing extra information with which to update the simulation model. The resultant permeability estimates have been successfully ground‐truthed against the results of two well tests. As non‐repeatable noise in the time‐lapse seismic data diminishes with improved 4D‐related acquisition, it will become increasingly possible to make robust permeability estimates using this approach.  相似文献
