The effect of artificial viscosity on a hydrodynamic simulation of stellar radial pulsation is examined for the purpose of studying the dependence of the modal coupling on the sharpness of the shock front. The model used in our study is a 2.5-d first-overtone pulsator in the Cepheid instability strip. By increasing the parameters in the von Neumann–Richtmyer formula of artificial viscosity, we obtained a low growth rate together with a small pulsation amplitude. The time-scale related to pulsation mode-switching is also increased.  相似文献

A genetic algorithm inversion of receiver functions derived from a dense seismic network around Iwate volcano, northeastern Japan, provides the fine S wave velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle. Since receiver functions are insensitive to an absolute velocity, travel times of P and S waves propagating vertically from earthquakes in the subducting slab beneath the volcano are involved in the inversion. The distribution of velocity perturbations in relation to the hypocenters of the low-frequency (LF) earthquakes helps our understanding of deep magmatism beneath Iwate volcano. A high-velocity region (dVS/VS=10%) exists around the volcano at depths of 2–15 km, with the bottom depth decreasing to 11 km beneath the volcano’s summit. Just beneath the thinning high-velocity region, a low-velocity region (dVS/VS=−10%) exists at depths of 11–20 km. Intermediate-depth LF (ILF) events are distributed vertically in the high-velocity region down to the top of the low-velocity region. This distribution suggests that a magma reservoir situated in the low-velocity region supplies magma to a narrow conduit that is detectable by the hypocenters of LF earthquakes. Another broad low-velocity region (dVS/VS=−5 to −10%) occurs at depths of 17–35 km. Additional clusters of deep LF (DLF) events exist at depths of 32–37 km in the broad low-velocity zone. The DLF and ILF events are the manifestations of magma movement near the Moho discontinuity and in the conduit just beneath the volcano, respectively.  相似文献

Measurements of perturbations in the atmospheric potential gradient around volcanic plumes at multiple (from two to five) sites, and measurements of the charge-mass ratio of ash particles falling from volcanic plumes, were carried out at Sakurajima Volcano, Japan. Results from 28 and 29 October 1995, show that the nature of the perturbations depends on the intensity of plume activity. Although plume activity was vigorous on 28 October, negative perturbations were predominant. As plume activity peaked, the magnitude of negative perturbations decreased just below the plume and increased at an off-axis site. During the peak period, positively charged ash particles fell out from the plume. This suggests that the active plume dominantly contained negatively charged materials, and that positively and negatively charged materials were added to the lower and upper parts of the plume, respectively, during the peak period. On the other hand, as plume activity became less vigorous on 29 October, the perturbations were characterized by a positive anomaly followed by a negative anomaly. Because wind velocity increased with altitude that day, we infer that positive and negative charges were distributed in the upper and lower parts of the plume, respectively. The differences in perturbations observed on 28 and 29 October suggest that volcanic plumes are generally composed of three parts: an upper part with positively charged gas and aerosol, a middle part with negatively charged fine ash particles, and a lower part with positively charged coarse ash particles. The compilation of present and previous results from Sakurajima and other volcanoes indicates that the effect of the negative charge in the middle part was predominant in most cases, although positive perturbations caused by the upper part were observed around some weak plumes. The effect of positively charged particles in the lower part was observable only when plume activity was sufficiently strong because positively charged coarse particles tended to fall out near the vent.  相似文献

Summary The decrease in elastic constants due to dilatancy in the earth's crust may bring about changes of its loading response to ocean tides. The amount of change is estimated by two-dimensional finite element analysis. The results show that if a dilatant zone of thicknessd underneath a coastline extends seaward and under the land, then amplitude changes will be detectable at distances 3d andd inland for strain and tilt tides, respectively. An anisotropic decrease of elastic constants in the vertical direction only will reduce the range by one half at most for strain tides especially.  相似文献

In order to investigate the genetic nature of the polymict breccia howardite Melrose-b, a whole-rock sample was separated into four fractions after pulverization and the rare earth element (REE) abundances were precisely determined by isotopic dilution in those fractions. Such an investigation shows that the three precipitated fine-particle fractions are depleted in Ce by the same factor (0.62 ~ 0.64) in spite of differences in mineralogy, while the corresponding factor of Ce depletion for the suspended-matter fraction is 0.462; the smaller value indicates a greater depletion in Ce.The weight fraction values of four fractions calculated from the REE abundances are in satisfactory agreement with the actual values. The concentration ratios between plagioclase and mainly pigeonite fractions accord with those observed in similar phases of the Juvinas eucrite [1]. Moreover, the bulk pattern synthesized from the three fine-particle fractions is similar in absolute level to that for the Zmenj howardite [1]. It is concluded that the negative Ce anomaly reflects the effect predating the igneous activity in the parent planetary body.  相似文献

Structural, morphological, magnetic, and thermal properties have been investigated for a novel post-perovskite oxide CaPtO3 synthesized under high pressure. By comparing obtained structural parameters with those for known post-perovskite compounds, we argue that the chemical bond has a strong covalent character. Precise measurements of the Langevin susceptibility χ 0 = −9.6 × 10−5 emu/mol and Debye temperature θ ∼ 470 K provide a good opportunity to confirm the reliability of first-principle calculations on predicting physical properties of the Earth’s D” layer.  相似文献

The present study aims to develop a hybrid multi‐model using the soft computing approach. The model is a combination of a fuzzy logic, artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic algorithm (GA). While neural networks are low‐level computational structures that perform well dealing with raw data, fuzzy logic deal with reasoning on a higher level by using linguistic information acquired from domain experts. However, fuzzy systems lack the ability to learn and cannot adjust themselves to a new environment. Moreover, experts occasionally make mistakes and thus some rules used in a system may be false. A network type structure of the present hybrid model is a multi‐layer feed‐forward network, the main part is a fuzzy system based on the first‐order Sugeno fuzzy model with a fuzzification and a defuzzification processes. The consequent parameters are determined by least square method. The back‐propagation is applied to adjust weights of network. Then, the antecedent parameters of the membership function are updated accordingly by the gradient descent method. The GA was applied to select the fuzzy rule. The hybrid multi‐model was used to forecast the flood level at Chiang Mai (under the big flood 2005) and the Koriyama flood (2003) in Japan. The forecasting results are evaluated using standard global goodness of fit statistic, efficient index (EI), the root mean square error (RMSE) and the peak flood error. Moreover, the results are compared to the results of a neuro‐genetic model (NGO) and ANFIS model using the same input and output variables. It was found that the hybrid multi‐model can be used successfully with an efficiency index (EI) more than 0·95 (for Chiang Mai flood up to 12 h ahead forecasting) and more than 0·90 (for Koriyama flood up to 8 h ahead forecasting). In general, all of three models can predict the water level with satisfactory results. However, the hybrid model gave the best flood peak estimation among the three models. Therefore, the use of fuzzy rule base, which is selected by GA in the hybrid multi‐model helps to improve the accuracy of flood peak. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The hydrochemical behaviour of catchments is often investigated by inferring stream chemistry through identification of source areas involved in hydrograph separation analysis, yet its dynamic evolution of hydrologic pathways has received little attention. Intensive hydrometric and hydrochemical measurements were performed during two different storms on March 29, 2001 and August 21–22, 2001 to define hydrochemical evolution under the dynamic of flow pathways in a 5·2 ha first‐order drainage of the Kawakami experimental basin (KEB), Central Japan, a forested headwater catchment with various soil depths (1·8 to 5 m) overlying late Neogene of volcanic bedrocks. The hydraulic potential distribution and flow lines data showed that the change in flow direction, which was controlled by rainfall amount and antecedent wetness of the soil profile, agreed well with the hydrochemical change across the slope segment during the storm. Hydrograph separation predicted by end‐member mixing analysis (EMMA) using Ca2+ and SiO2 showed that near surface riparian, hillslope soil water and deep riparian groundwater were important in stream flow generation. The evidence of decrease in solutes concentration at a depth of 1 m in the hillslope and 0·6 m in the near surface riparian during peak storm suggested a flushing of high solutes concentration. Most of the solutes accumulated in the deep riparian groundwater zone, which was due to prominent downward flow and agreed well with the residence time. The distinct flow pathways and chemistry between the near surface riparian and deep riparian groundwater zones and the linkage hillslope aquifer and near surface riparian reservoir, which controls rapid flow and solutes flushing during the storm event, are in conflict with the typical assumption that the whole riparian zone resets flow pathways and chemical signature of hillslope soil water, as has been reported in a previous study.
