Evidence for a delayed acceleration process in solar flares is presented in the form of an analysis of simultaneous observations in microwaves, decimetre and metrewaves, and hard X-rays of six delayed gradual bursts which appear 0.5–1 hr after the strong main bursts have faded. The observed characteristics of the delayed bursts are: (a) similarity of flux time profiles at all the wavelengths, (b) low turn-over frequency (4 GHz) of the microwave spectrum, (c) moderately strong circular polarization (30–40%) and low altitude of the microwave source (which is displaced toward the disk centre by a projected distance of 10–20 from that of the preceding main burst), and (d) low spectral index of the energy spectrum of hard X-rays.From these observations it is suggested that (i) electrons are accelerated up to MeV even some tens of minutes after the impulsive phase acceleration has almost ceased, (ii) the delayed acceleration occurs in a large magnetic structure extending to a height of at least 2 × 105 km, and (iii) the radio source has columnar structure with the microwave source predominantly near a leg or legs and the metrewave source near the top of the magnetic structure. We present a new method of estimating the energy of microwave-emitting electrons from the observed rate of increase of the microwave flux relative to the hard X-ray flux measured at various energies during the rising phase of solar flares. A total of 22 flares observed simultaneously in hard X-rays (20–400 keV) and in microwaves (17 GHz) were analyzed in this way and the results are as follows:
  1. The observed energy of X-rays which vary in proportion to the 17 GHz emission concentrates mostly below 100 keV with a median energy of 70 keV. Since the mean energy of electrons emitting 70 keV X-rays is ?130 keV or ?180 keV, depending on the assumed hard X-ray emission model (thin-target and thick-target, respectively), this photon energy strongly suggests that the 17 GHz emission comes mostly from electrons with an energy of less than a few hundred keV.
  2. Correspondingly, the magnetic field strength in the microwave source is calculated to be 500–1000 G for the thick-target case and 1000–2000 G for the thin-target case. Finally, judging from the values of the source parameters required for the observed microwave fluxes, we conclude that the thick-target model in which precipitating electrons give rise to both X-rays and microwaves is consistent with the observations for at least 16 out of 22 flares examined.

We have measured helium isotopic ratios of thirty-seven Pacific water samples from various depths collected in adjacent regions of Honshu, Japan. The 3He/4He ratios vary significantly from 0.989 R atm to 1.208 R atm where R atm is the atmospheric ratio of 1.39 × 10−6. The mid-depth (750–1500 m) profile of 3He/4He ratios at ST-1 located Northwestern Pacific Ocean east of Japan (Off Joban; 37°00′ N, 142°40′ E) is significantly different from that at ST-2 of the Northern Philippine Sea south of Japan (Nankai Trough; 33°07′ N, 139°59′ E), suggesting that these waters were separated by a topographic barrier, the Izu-Ogasawara Ridge. Taking 3He/4He data of the Geosecs expeditions in the western North Pacific, an extensive plume of 15% excess 3He relative to the air may be traced at ST-1 over 12,000 kilometers to the northwest of the East Pacific Rise where the mantle helium may originate. The 20% excess found at ST-2 may be attributable to the additional source of the subduction-type mantle helium in the Okinawa Trough. A 15% excess of 3He has also been discovered at a depth of about 1000∼1500 m at ST-3 adjacent to Miyakejima Island (33°57′ N, 139°22′ E) and ST-4 of Sagami Bay (35°00′ N, 139°22′ E). It is confirmed that mid-depth all over the western North Pacific water is affected by the mantle helium with a high 3He/4He ratio. The physical processes responsible for microwave emission in solar flares are outlined, and examples of how microwave observations have been interpreted in terms of physical parameters are described. Selected results obtained during Solar Cycle 21 with the microwave observatories dedicated to synoptic observations of the Sun are summarized. The status and future plans for these facilities at Bern and in Japan are presented. Also discussed are the instrument capabilities required at microwave frequencies to achieve the objectives of a future facility for high-energy solar physics.  相似文献

The change of source characteristics during the transition from the impulsive phase to the post-burst phase is investigated for cm bursts on a statistical basis. The results are the following: (1) The sudden decrease of the circular polarization degree is found almost invariably at the transition; typically from 20–30% down to a few percent. (2) Some bursts show remarkable source expansions in the post-burst phase. There are no cases in which impulsive bursts have larger source size than the associated post-burst increases. (3) Type III bursts which are indicative of non-thermal phenomena are associated with the impulsive phase but not with the post-burst phase.
