Matsuno and Nagata (1987) showed numerically that the spreading characteristics of the discharged heated water from power plants of existing scale is significantly influenced by the earth's rotation effect. Although the effect of the enhancement of the Coriolis parameter on the spreading characteristics of the formed warm water mass was discussed in order to demonstrate the rotation effect, other parameters such as the density difference between the discharged heated water and ambient water and the vertical eddy viscosity and diffusivity were fixed. In this paper, the dependence of the spreading characteristics on these parameters is examined. Then, it is shown that the overall shape of the formed warm water mass and density and velocity structure strongly depend on these parameters. Also, it is indicated that the behavior of the warm water mass under the rotation effects is too complicated to be described with a few parameters. For example, the internal radius of deformation seems to be one of the determinative parameters, and the increase of the density difference between discharged water and ambient water has a similar effect on the shape of the formed warm water mass as a decrease of the Coriolis parameter. However, a change of the two values has different effects on the detailed density structure and current structure of the warm water mass. The Prandtl number seems to determine some aspects of the veloczty field such as velocity magnitude and width of the southward flowing current zone. The most plausible scenarios for seasonal to interannual variabilities and their possible causes are investigated for the Tsushima Current system passing through the Japan Sea. The study is based on the north and south two-box model across the polar front in an idealized upper ocean of the Japan Sea. The boxes are connected by lateral diffusive heat transport and cooled by atmospheric forcing at the annual mean state. The south box, i.e. the Tsushima Current region, only interacts with the outside warmer box in the East China Sea and has an eastward thermal-driven current originating in the outside box. The magnitude of this current depends on the strength of the thermal gradient between the north and south boxes; the inflow of warm waters can therefore be maintained by net heat loss through the sea-surface. I call such a thermal-driven inflow process a "Cooling-Induced Current" system in the present study. Under periodical heat forcing, the perturbation response of the model to water temperature fields and inflow transport were examined. It is shown that the lateral diffusion time across the polar front (over a period of 10 years) is crucial to the interannual modeled response. An analysis of the seasonal heat budget suggests that the heat transported into the Japan Sea from the East China Sea in summer is stored mainly within the Tsushima Current region and contributes to heat loss by the sea-surface cooling in winter. 相似文献

The mechanism by which nutrient is supplied to a warm-core ring (WCR) was investigated in order to understand the greater
productivity of WCR than that of the Kuroshio, where the WCR originattes. A single WCR was observed in January and May, 1997.
The thermostad (a layer of isothermal and isohaline water) of the WCR had different properties from January to May, the differences:
Δwater temperature: −0.698°C, Δsalinity: −0.048, Δsigma θ: +0.072, Δnitrite+nitrate-N: +1.83 μM, Δphosphate: +0.011 μM and
Δsilicate: +3.2 μM. We examined three possible mechanisms for nutrient supply to WCR in winter, namely: 1) inflow of the Oyashio
surface water into WCR; 2) isopycnal mixing with Oyashio water; 3) entrainment of the water below the WCR into the WCR. The
results were as follows: 1) When the decrease of salinity was due to the inflow of the Oyashio surface water, the increase
of nutrients (nitrite+nitrate-N, phosphate-P and silicate-Si) was estimated to be only 17–27% of the observed increase. 2)
When the decrease of salinity was due to isopycnal mixing, the increase of nutrients was estimated to be 30–42% of the observed
increase. 3) When the decrease of salinity in the WCR in May was due to entrainment of the water below the WCR in winter by
convection, the mixing depth was calculated be 620 m according to the salt budget. The increase of nutrients in this case
was calculated to be 82–95% of the observed increase. The main mechanism of nutrient supply to WCR was concluded to be due
to the entrainment of the water below the WCR by winter mixing.

Distributions and taxonomy of phyllosoma larvae were examined in Taiwanese waters, based on ichthyoplankton samples collected
from May 1990 to July 1995. Phyllosoma larvae belonged to the two families Scyllaridae and Palinuridae representing 6 genera
and 13 species. Of the collected phyllosoma larvae, those of Scyllarus and Panulirus species were most abundant, forming 90% of total numbers. Early stage Scyllarus and Panulirus phyllosoma larvae were abundant in Taiwanese waters. Middle to late stages (except the final stage) of Panulirus phyllosoma larvae were absent from the waters throughout the year, while those of Scyllarus phyllosoma larvae were collected in the waters. This suggests that all stages of Scyllarus phyllosoma larvae may be retained in the northern part of the waters around northern Taiwan while middle to late stages of
Panulirus phyllosoma larvae may be flushed out from the waters, the sub-final and final stages then possibly returning to the waters.
An anticlockwise eddy existed in the waters off northeastern Taiwan, which may be closely related to flushing out and returning
of Panulirus phyllosoma larvae through a much longer planktonic period.

The seasonal variations of water properties and the baroclinic flow pattern in the upper layer of Toyama Bay, where the shelf
breaks in the passway of the eastward coastal branch of the Tsushima Warm Current, have been examined using temperature and
salinity data from 26 local stations collected in the 32 years from 1963 through 1994. The results show that the flow pattern
around the bay, as inferred from the distributions of the geopotential anomaly at 300 dbar and saline core water, changes
remarkably from summer to autumn. There are two obvious inflows into Toyama Bay in a year. One is the surface inflow of less
saline water from east of the Noto Peninsula as the coastal-trapped density-driven flow of the coastal branch during the transition
from May to July. In September, this inflow is abruptly weakened by a transient northwestward reversal flow in the intermediate
layer around 100 m depth. This reversal flow is accompanied by the temporary shallowness of the pycnoclines inside the bay.
At that time, another inflow with more saline water of the year occurs in the intermediate layer. From November until January,
this reversal flow disappears and a southeastward passing through-flow gradually intensifies across the bay mouth, accompanied
by deepening of the pycnoclines inside the bay. According to our interannual analysis over the 32-year study period, this
reversal flow has been a stable seasonal phenomenon, except for only 4 years, in which a local warm region or warm eddy developed

Contents of90Sr,137Cs and60Co in surface sediments were investigated in and around Urazoko Bay, Fukui Prefecture, where a nuclear power plant has been operating since 1969 and the waste effluent has been released into the sea. The main source of90Sr and137Cs was recognized to be radioactive fallout, whereas60Co was considered to originate from the nuclear power plant. Using the137Cs concentration as an indicator of sorption capacity of the sediment, the behaviour of60Co was investigated. No seasonal variation was observed in the distribution pattern of60Co/137Cs ratio and the retention of the heavy initial discharge in 1969 was considered to dominate the radionuclide level in the sediment. Correlation of60Co/137Cs ratio in the sediment and the distance from the discharge outlet was expressed by a simple exponential function of the distance. Vertical distributions of phyllosoma larvae were examined in waters east of the Philippines or west of the Mariana Islands
(18°56′ N to 19°04′ N; 129°10′ E to 129°35′ E) based on zooplankton samples collected with an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl on
September 22–24, 1986. Phyllosoma larvae belonged to the two families Scyllaridae and Palinuridae comprising 4 genera and
9 species. Of the collected phyllosoma larvae, those of Scyllarus cultrifer and Panulirus longipes were most abundant and showed similar vertical distributions: (1) both species were collected from the mixed layer at night
but not in the day, (2) their vertical distributions did not change with their stages, and (3) the upper limit of their vertical
distributions during the day accorded with the base of mixed layer. Furthermore, their vertical distributions were similar
to those of lepthocephalus larvae which were collected using the same sampling stations and gear in the present study. Vertical
distributions of phyllosoma larvae were discussed in relation to their horizontal distributions.

Physicochemical, mineralogical, and geochemical characteristics of 279 highly calcareous lacustrine sediment samples obtained from a 30 m drilling core in the western part of the Great Konya Basin, Turkey were studied. The sediments have a predominance of silt and clay fractions with a median diameter of 3–5 μm. Vertical changes of the amounts of water soluble components, gypsum, carbonates, and non-salt minerals such as quartz, feldspars, and layer silicates in the sediments suggest that there were climatic changes in the Konya Basin. The dominant clay mineral is smectite followed by kaolinite, illite, and palygorskite. The oxygen isotopic (δ18O) ratios of six quartz samples from the Konya sediments, a terra rossa soil beside Lake Bey
ehir gölü and paleosols at the foot of Mt. Erciyes Da
ranged from +18.1 to +20.6‰. The dominant clay minerals and δ18O ratios suggest that part of quartz and coexisting layer silicates is of long-range transported and/or local aeolian dust origin from arid and semi-arid regions such as North Africa, Israel, and the surroundings. The relatively high deposition rate might be due to aeolian dust input and/or the sediment input introduced by the rivers such as the Çar
amba river from the Toros (Taurus) mountains. The vertical distributions of electro-conductivity, amounts of water soluble and non-salt components, and the gypsum content of the sediments suggest that gypsum-rich layers were formed under shallow, saline waters, possibly associated with warm to hot and dry environments such as the Last Interglacial epoch and the Early Holocene. The sediments characterized by relatively high amounts of non-salt sediments, in which gypsum did not accumulate, could be deeper water phases formed under the cold and/or wet environments such as the Glacial epochs. 相似文献
