Most reinforced concrete structures are damaged due to corrosion of reinforcements in concrete. In normal conditions the pH near the reinforcements is around 12–13 which means that steel is in a passive state. But aggressive species, such as chloride ions or carbon dioxide, may penetrate into concrete and promote active corrosion. As a consequence (hydro)oxides are produced leading to degradation of concrete structures. For instance cracking of the concrete is generated due to the pressure induced by rust. In this paper, we study the inception and the propagation of cracking on reinforced mortar plates with rebars located either in the middle or at the corner. Additional experiments have been performed on cylindrical specimens to determine the local effect of rust pressure at the interface rust/mortar. The specimens have been subjected to imposed current density in order to enhance the corrosion and digital image intercorrelation has been used to determine displacement fields. We aim to constrain the lower mantle geotherm and average composition from 1D seismic models and experimental mineralogy data, explicitly accounting for possible sources of uncertainty. We employ an isentropic third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state, which is in excellent agreement with recent ab initio calculations of density and bulk modulus for Mg-perovskite. Furthermore, ab initio and experimental data are reasonably consistent with each other. Modelling the shear modulus is not as straightforward, but is needed because density and the bulk modulus alone do not sufficiently constrain temperature and composition. To correctly predict ab initio calculations for the shear modulus of Mg-perovskite, we needed to prescribe a cross-derivative at zero pressure, which we determined by trial and errors. Unless this ad hoc cross-derivative is confirmed by further experimental results, there seems to be an inconsistency between ab initio and experimental data. Purely experimental data most likely require a non-adiabatic temperature profile, but it is difficult to infer the number and location(s) of the non-adiabatic increase(s). If ab initio data are used, at least one thermal boundary layer seems reasonable, but its location depends on the modelling of the iron content. A strong chemical density contrast in the mid-mantle (≥2%) is not supported by ab initio data, but is possible with experimental data. Other major sources of uncertainty are the trade-off between thermal and compositional effects, the possible influence of aluminium perovskite, and poorly understood frequency effects.  相似文献

Collapses that affect cave speleothems have frequently been attributed to earthquakes, although this has not been proved. Observations after an earthquake and laboratory tests indicate that only slender speleothems break under coseismic solicitation. Other causes as subsidence, decompression and creeping of ice or cave sediments explain most of the breaks. Tectonics is also a major cause of speleothems breakages and it is possible to detect minute movements of faults. It seems possible to make the difference between brutal coseismic movements and aseismic slow ones. This work relates to the debate on the fossil organic carbon (FOC) input in modern environments and its possible implication for the carbon cycle, and suggests the use of Rock‐Eval 6 pyrolysis as a relevant tool for tracking FOC in such environments. Considering that such a delivery is mainly due to supergene processes affecting the continental surface, we studied organic matter in different reservoirs such as bedrocks, alterites, soils and rivers in two experimental catchments at Draix (Alpes de Haute Provence, France). Samples were subjected to geochemical (Rock‐Eval 6 pyrolysis) investigations and artificial bacterial degradations. After comparing the geochemical fingerprint of samples, geochemical markers of FOC were defined and tracked in the different reservoirs. Our results confirm the contribution of FOC in modern soils and rivers and display the various influences of weathering and erosional processes on the fate of FOC during its exchange between these pools. In addition, the contrasting behaviour of these markers upon the supergene processes has also highlighted the refractory or labile characters of the fossil organic matter (FOM). Bedrock to river fluxes, controlled by gully erosion, are characterized by a qualitative and quantitative preservation of FOM. Bedrock to alterite fluxes, governed by chemical weathering, are characterized by FOC mineralization without qualitative changes in deeper alterites. Alterite to soils fluxes, controlled by (bio)chemical weathering, are characterized by strong FOC mineralization and qualitative changes of FOM. Thus weathering and erosional processes induce different FOM evolution and affect the fate of FOC towards the global carbon cycle. In this study, gully erosion would involve maintenance of an ancient sink for the global carbon cycle, while (bio)chemical processes provide a source of CO2. Finally, this study suggests that Rock‐Eval 6 pyrolysis can be considered as a relevant tool for tracking FOC in modern environments. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Electrophoretic variation in proteins encoded by seven presumptive gene loci was analyzed in four populations of the stygobiont amphipodNiphargus rhenorhodanensis. The four populations occur in different habitats, including one in drainage canals, another from sediments of the Ain River, a tributary of the Rhône River, and the remaining two occur in a karstic massif (Dorvan, Ain, France) in the epikarstic and at the base level of the massif, respectively. Six of the seven loci were polymorphic within or among populations, with as many as three electromorphs segregating at the most variable loci. Significant deficiencies in the frequency of heterozygotes were common. Genetic divergence between the two populations of the Dorvan Massif and between the two of the Ain River (forest and sediment habitats) was large. This was highly unexpected, particularly in the case of the two hydrologically connected populations of the Dorvan Massif. It is suggested that either low migration rates or the presence of ecological barriers to gene flow may result in strong genetic differention among local populations ofNiphargus.  相似文献

(Marseille–Cassis–Bouches–du-Rhône). The salinity of the karstic submarine spring of Port-Miou has sometimes been attributed to the leaching of continental evaporites. Our recent chemical and isotopic analyses indicate a simple mixing between fresh karstic water and seawater. In the main gallery, the contamination by seawater, still present up to 2.2 km from the entrance at a depth of 147 m below the sea level, forces us to think about a general geometry that allows mixing of waters, at a great depth, in the karstic system. The measurements of the discharge of the spring indicate an excess of water compared with its supposed watershed, whereas a succinct evaluation of the aquifers of the Lower Provence indicates a deficit of discharge. Consequently, it seems possible that parts of the calcareous areas of the Lower Provence feed the springs of Port-Miou with a total catchment area of 1200 km2. This deep and large karstic system was probably installed during the Messinian period, when the important lowering of the level of the Mediterranean Sea provoked an important gradient between Provence and the seashore. Recent very high-resolution seismic profiles ground-truthed by vibrocores allow us to evidence an atypical incised valley fill in a drowned valley segment, the ‘Pertuis Breton’ (Bay of Biscay, France). The sedimentary valley-fill architecture mainly includes five superimposed progradational wedges composed by marine sands. Sandbodies show a landward migration of their depocentres upward and are topped by almost flat unconformities extended by submarine terraces. This sedimentary infill pattern is similar to backstepping wedges, described on continental shelfs. It suggests that this valley fill records sea-level rise during the last transgression. On the basis of radiocarbon ages obtained on wood burned by base surges and tephrochronological observations, it has been possible to assess that the Puy Chopine, aged ca 9700 yr is older by a few centuries than both the Vasset and Kilian volcanoes. The last two have nearly the same age, ca 9300–9400 yr. Layers of trachytic tephra, most probably originated from Kilian or Vasset, can be observed overlapping those from the Pariou. This last volcano had been previously thought to be the younger of the area on the basis of the observation of trachytic tephra beneath its own tephra. However, new observations allow us to assume that those trachytes originated from the acid phase of the Pariou itself. Therefore, it can be assessed that the four volcanoes erupted according to the following sequence: Chopine/Pariou/?Vasset?/Kilian; the chronological situation of Vasset lies on poor arguments and it should be confirmed. The results of our new paleomagnetic investigations on 21 sites in the Cévennes and Lure regions as well as previous studies demonstrate that all Mesozoic marly limestones of SE France exhibit similar paleomagnetic behavior with remagnetization disputed in age. The studied areas have the particularity to have been folded before (Late Eocene), the Alpine folding (Oligo–Miocene). Samples (201 marly limestones) dated from Lower Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous have been demagnetized by thermal treatment. They all present a well-defined component with a normal polarity which was mostly obtained between 200 and 350 °C. Numerous arguments lead from pretectonic to syntectonic widespread remagnetization related to orogenic fluid circulation affecting the whole basin. An Eocene age (between 35 and 40 Ma) is obtained for this remagnetization thanks both to the comparison of the average inclination of all regional paleomagnetic studies (+54.9°/−1.5°) with the expected paleomagnetic inclination and the syntectonic character of remagnetization.  相似文献

During blasting operations in a competent rock mass without open joints or faults, the structure of the wave fields generated by the detonation of a cylindrical charge depends mainly on the relation between the velocity of detonation ( c d ) and the velocity of the P and S waves, c P and c S , respectively, in the medium. If c d is larger than c P , detonation is supersonic and Mach P and S waves appear. If c d is between c P and c S , detonation is transonic, and only an S Mach wave is generated. If c d is less than c S , subsonic detonation occurs. In this paper, we describe an experiment conducted at the Andina mine (Chile) in order to demonstrate the differences between the wave fields generated by supersonic and transonic detonation. We also present a simulation of the detonation of a cylindrical charge using the finite differences Itasca software FLAC3.4. In particular, we show how important it is to secure a good adjustment of the rheological behaviour of the medium, in our case, a strain softening elasto-plastic model.  相似文献
