Streaming‐potentials are produced by electrokinetic effects in relation to fluid flow and are used for geophysical prospecting. The aim of this study is to model streaming potential measurements for unsaturated conditions using an empirical approach. A conceptual model is applied to streaming potential measurements obtained from two drainage experiments in sand. The streaming potential data presented here show a non‐monotonous behaviour with increasing water saturation, following a pattern that cannot be predicted by existing models. A model involving quasi‐static and dynamic components is proposed to reproduce the streaming potential measurements. The dynamic component is based on the first time derivative of the driving pore pressure. The influence of this component is investigated with respect to fluid velocity, which is very different between the two experiments. The results demonstrate that the dynamic component is predominant at the onset of drainage in experiments with the slowest water flow. On the other hand, its influence appears to vanish with increasing drainage velocity. Our results suggest that fluid flow and water distribution at the pore scale have an important influence on the streaming potential response for unsaturated conditions. We propose to explain this specific streaming potential response in terms of the behaviour of both rock/water interface and water/air interfaces created during desaturation processes. The water/air interfaces are negatively charged, as also observed in the case of water/rock interfaces. Both the surface area and the flow velocity across these interfaces are thought to contribute to the non‐monotonous behaviour of the streaming potential coefficient as well as the variations in its amplitude. The non‐monotonous behaviour of air/water interfaces created during the flow was highlighted as it was measured and modelled by studies published in the literature. The streaming potential coefficient can increase to about 10 to 40 when water saturation decreases. Such an increase is possible if the amount of water/air interfaces is increased in sufficient amount, which can be the case.  相似文献

The basement of Montagne Noire (South France), as represented by the orthogneisses of the axial zone, has been dated by means of whole rocks isochron at 530 m.y. This age is discussed with the assistance of petrographic observations and compared to similar results obtained by other authors in the Massif Armoricain and eastern Pyrénées ranges. The high initial ratio 87Sr/86Sr allows one to hypothesize that these igneous masses were originated from a segment of a preexisting crust.

We determined the Nd isotopic composition and the Sm/Nd ratios in a series of Australian shales ranging from 0.2 Gy to 3.3 Gy. The first result of this study is the constancy of the Sm/Nd ratio in these shales, as in granitoids. Secondly, the initial (143Nd/144Nd) ratio gives a regular curve decreasing through geological time. Both results confirm that shales are representative samples of the continental crust, when insoluble elements, like REE, are studied.We calculated their Nd model ages of crustal differentiation. The model ages regularly decrease with the stratigraphic ages and after 2 Gy, the curve flattens and tends to an asymptotic value at around 1.8 Gy. The significance of the shales is that they represent a mixture of continental materials and we consider the model age of such a mixture directly linked with the mean age of the continental portion feeding the sedimentary basin.From these results, we deduce a quantitative model of the growth curve of the continental source of the shales taking into account the effects of erosion which selectively sample recent mountains relative to shield areas. We propose that the results obtained here are representative of the whole Gondwana continent.Having studied the case of the Australian shales, we try to extend our study. First we applied our quantitative approach to the recent results obtained by O'Nions et al. on North Atlantic provinces. The continental growth curves obtained by our inversion procedure are quite distinct from the Australian shales showing the regional character of shales.With these two cases studied we try to compare our results with the already developed model for continental growth. The consideration of the surface conservative versus surface non-conservative models clearly show the non-uniqueness of the geological interpretation of the growth curve. On the other hand, we have calculated for each case the recycling rate versus geological time by comparing the growth curve with the Hurley-Rand province age curve. Such recycling increases with time in agreement with the data obtained on Nd and Sr initial ratios on granitoids.  相似文献

UPb analyses of fractions of zircon and monazite (3–8 grains each) and of single zircon grains resolve a lower Ordovician age of 470 ±4m.y. for the Palung granite which occurs in the High Himalayan nappes south of Kathmandu. Its thrusting during the Alpine orogeny under lower greenschist facies conditions did not affect the UPb systems in zircon and monazite. The granite crystallized from a magma which was mainly generated by anatexis of Precambrian continental crust. The magma was heterogeneous with respect to primary ages and/or metamorphic histories of the magma source rocks. This indicates either a derivation from (meta-) sediments or an intense mixing of different crustally derived magmas. The genesis of the Palung granite is possibly related to an orogeny which affected the Indian shield in lower Palaeozoic times. The detected inherited radiogenic lead in the Palung zircons occurs in perfectly homogeneous, transparent crystals; i.e. this radiogenic (“excess”) lead is not related to the presence of old, microscopically visible, overgrown zircon cores. The minimum ages of the inherited lead components range from about 800 to 1700 m.y.  相似文献

This paper develops an application of the inverse method proposed by Allégre et al. (1977) and Minster et al. (1977). Using a set of trace element data in a suite of primary lavas, it is possible to statistically test whether the data can be described by batch partial melting. Once this is achieved, one can inverse the problem and calculate the parameters which govern the process, that is: the degrees of melting corresponding to each lava, the initial source concentrations and partition coefficients for each element. This is a non-linear, strongly underdetermined problem, but when the set of trace elements is restricted to REE, taking advantage of the fact that their properties are smoothly related, the problem can be overconstrained by assuming a set of poorly constrained model parameters. Information contained in the data and in the external constraints can then be estimated and used to build a strategy of data acquisition. From a table of mineral-liquid partition coefficients, the mineralogies of the source and of the material entering the liquid can be calculated. The method has been tested on synthetic data sets representing natural cases, and proved to converge towards the real solution even when a very poor definition of the external constraints is introduced.The calculations have been applied to REE data on Grenada basanitoids (Shimizu and Arculus, 1976). It is confirmed that these lavas can be derived by 4 to 17% batch partial melting of a garnet lherzolite source (7% gt, 23% cpx) that is relatively enriched in light REE. This result is discussed in relation with Nd and Sr isotopic composition data.  相似文献

This paper describes an extended application of the Rayleigh distillation law to trace element behavior in a fractional crystallization sequence. Using a trace element with a very low bulk partition coefficient as a reference (as suggested by Anderson and Greenland, 1969, and extended by Treuil and Varet, 1973), we can derive bulk partition coefficients for other elements and, in turn, the mineralogical composition of the cumulates. Trace elements with large D, such as Ni and Cr, further constrain the system, and we can deduce the initial composition of the magma. Pb isotopic compositions and U-Pb abundances were determined in the metal phase of six iron meteorites: Canyon Diablo IA, Toluca IA, Odessa IA, Youndegin IA, Deport IA and Mundrabilla An. Prior to complete dissolution, samples were subjected to a series of leachings and partial dissolutions. Isotopic compositions and abundances of the etched Pb indicate a contamination by terrestrial Pb which is attributable to previous cutting of the meteorite. Pb isotopic compositions measured in the decontaminated samples are identical within 0.2% and essentially confirm the primordial Pb value defined by Tatsumotoet al. (1973). These data invalidate more radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions published for iron meteorites, which are the result of terrestrial Pb contamination introduced mainly by analytical procedure. Our results support the idea of a solar nebula which was isotopically homogeneous for Pb 4.55 Ga ago. The new upper limit for U-abundance in iron meteorites, 0.001 ppb, is in agreement with its expected thermodynamic solubility in the metal phase.  相似文献
