A finite element analysis of a reinforced embankment-foundation system has been conducted using a coupled formulation and elastoplasticity theory. Such important factors as type of reinforcement, the type of clay, depth of foundation and drainage condition affecting the system have been systematically investigated using appropriate constitutive models to depict various components of the system and material parameters of two typical soft clay deposits found in India. The displacements, reinforcement force and maximum heights of the embankments are among the aspects presented and discussed. It is shown that the effectiveness of the reinforcement is dependent on its stiffness and the shear strength of the clay deposit. The foundation depth has significant effect on the nature and magnitude of displacement, the reinforcement force and the height of embankment. Drainage conditions are shown to markedly influence the effectiveness of reinforcement. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study presents a modeling framework for quantifying human impacts and for partitioning the sources of contamination related to water quality in the mixed-use landscape of a small tropical volcanic island. On Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa, production wells in the most populated region (the Tafuna-Leone Plain) produce most of the island’s drinking water. However, much of this water has been deemed unsafe to drink since 2009. Tutuila has three predominant anthropogenic non-point-groundwater-pollution sources of concern: on-site disposal systems (OSDS), agricultural chemicals, and pig manure. These sources are broadly distributed throughout the landscape and are located near many drinking-water wells. Water quality analyses show a link between elevated levels of total dissolved groundwater nitrogen (TN) and areas with high non-point-source pollution density, suggesting that TN can be used as a tracer of groundwater contamination from these sources. The modeling framework used in this study integrates land-use information, hydrological data, and water quality analyses with nitrogen loading and transport models. The approach utilizes a numerical groundwater flow model, a nitrogen-loading model, and a multi-species contaminant transport model. Nitrogen from each source is modeled as an independent component in order to trace the impact from individual land-use activities. Model results are calibrated and validated with dissolved groundwater TN concentrations and inorganic δ15N values, respectively. Results indicate that OSDS contribute significantly more TN to Tutuila’s aquifers than other sources, and thus should be prioritized in future water-quality management efforts.  相似文献

In this study, the spatio-temporal evolution of Yellowstone deformation between 1992 and 2009 is monitored using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data acquired by the European Remote-Sensing Satellites (ERS-1 and ERS-2) and the Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT). These data are combined with continuous global positioning system (GPS) measurements to identify four discrete episodes of caldera subsidence and uplift, these episodes are: 1992–1995 (subsidence of 2.7 cm/year), 1996–2000 (subsidence of 0.5 cm/year, with local uplift of 1.7 cm/year at Norris), 2000–2004 (subsidence of 0.7 cm/year, with local uplift of 0.6 cm/year at Norris), and 2004–2009 (uplift of 3–8 cm/year, with local subsidence of 1–4 cm/year at Norris). We construct the full three-dimensional velocity field of Yellowstone deformation for 2005–2006 from ascending and descending ENVISAT orbits. The InSAR three-dimensional velocity field and three-component GPS measurements indicate that the majority of the observed deformation (3–8 cm/year) across the Yellowstone caldera and near Norris Geyser Basin (NGB) occurred in the vertical direction between the summers of 2005 and 2006. During this time, significant lateral displacements of 3–7 cm/year also occurred in the east–west direction at the southeastern and western rims of the Yellowstone caldera and in the area between Hebgen Lake and NGB. Minor north–south displacements of about 0.2 cm/year also occurred, however, in the southwestern section of the caldera and near Yellowstone Lake during the same period. The calculated three-dimensional velocity field for 2005–2006 implies the existence of two pressure-point sources, beneath the two structural resurgent domes in the Yellowstone caldera, connected by a planar conduit, rather than a single, large sill as proposed in previous studies. Furthermore, no measurable displacements occurred along any fault zone across the caldera during the entire period of observation (1992–2009). Therefore, we infer that magmatic and hydrothermal processes beneath the Yellowstone caldera and NGB were the main sources of deformation.  相似文献

Data of geomagnetic indices (aa, Kp, Ap, and Dst) recorded near 1 AU over the period 1967–2016, have been studied based on the asymmetry between the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) directions above and below of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). Our results led to the following conclusions: (i) Throughout the considered period, 31 random years (62%) showed apparent asymmetries between Toward (\(\mathbf{T}\)) and Away (\(\mathbf{A}\)) polarity days and 19 years (38%) exhibited nearly a symmetrical behavior. The days of \(\mathbf{A}\) polarity predominated over the \(\mathbf{T}\) polarity days by 4.3% during the positive magnetic polarity epoch (1991–1999). While the days of \(\mathbf{T}\) polarity exceeded the days of \(\mathbf{A}\) polarity by 5.8% during the negative magnetic polarity epoch (2001–2012). (ii) Considerable yearly North–South (N–S) asymmetries of geomagnetic indices observed throughout the considered period. (iii) The largest toward dominant peaks for \(aa\) and \(Ap\) indices occurred in 1995 near to minimum of solar activity. Moreover, the most substantial away dominant peaks for \(aa\) and \(Ap\) indices occurred in 2003 (during the descending phase of the solar cycle 23) and in 1991 (near the maximum of solar activity cycle) respectively. (iv) The N–S asymmetry of \(Kp\) index indicated a most significant away dominant peak occurred in 2003. (v) Four of the away dominant peaks of Dst index occurred at the maxima of solar activity in the years 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2013. The largest toward dominant peak occurred in 1991 (at the reversal of IMF polarity). (vi) The geomagnetic indices (aa, Ap, and \(Kp\)) all have northern dominance during positive magnetic polarity epoch (1971–1979), while the asymmetries shifts to the southern solar hemisphere during negative magnetic polarity epoch (2001–2012).  相似文献

A new empirical equation to estimate hydraulic conductivity is proposed, based on a large set of measured data for hydraulic properties of soil. The equation is simpler and more accurate than the series-parallel model. Under conditions of insufficient data, the new equation provides a good estimation of hydraulic conductivity for sands. For the same class of soils, another empirical equation is proposed to estimate the power N in the Averjanov-Irmay function.  相似文献

The studied Carboniferous flysch and molasse sediments from the Intra-Sudetic Basin correspond to the period from Middle Visean to Early Autunian. Main magnetic minerals carrying the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) are goethite, magnetite, maghemite and hematite, all usually secondarily formed and/or remagnetized due to several tectonometamorphic events. In most samples several NRM components were isolated. One of them is usually a Jurassic-Triassic overprint. Some others define the Westphalian-Early Permian segment of the declination and inclination trajectory for the Sudetes calculated according to the reference apparent polar wander path for the Baltica plate. The Sudetic path is slightly shifted to the east compared to the reference path, suggesting the possibility of independent movements of the Sudetes during this time. The majority of isolated NRM components are secondary and related to the Sudetic orogenic phase and later tectonometamorphic activity.  相似文献

In order to extend our knowledge of the performance of long-span bridges under earthquake loading the effects of spatial variability of ground motion on the structural response of cable-stayed bridges are studied; the result can be useful to practising bridge engineers. The multiple-support excitation analysis is described, and two three-dimensional models representing the modern and future trends in cable-stayed bridge design are utilized to shed some light on salient features of the seismic response characteristics of these modern bridges. In addition, models of steel- and concrete-design alternates of an existing bridge are considered. Differential ground motion records (obtained from dense instrument arrays) are used as synchronous and non-synchronous support motions; in addition, non-dispersive seismic waves travelling along the bridge are considered. The bridge response to non-uniform ground motion is compared to its response to uniform input. An overview of the unique dynamic characteristics of these cable-supported bridges is also presented. Finally, the study, which was used in the seismic design of several existing cable-stayed bridges in U.S. and Canada, indicates that the response quantities may increase substantially from the non-uniform input ground motion, especially for more rigid bridges and for bridges having different dynamic properties of the local soils at the supporting points, but the degree of increase depends upon the specific problem, in particular upon the aspects of span length, rigidity and structural redundancy. Thus, the response to non-uniform input ground motion should be examined for these bridges.  相似文献

Some useful properties of a finite energy, constant-α, force-free magnetic field B α occupying a half-space D are presented. In particular:
  1. Fourier and Green representations of B α are obtained and used to derive conditions for the existence and uniqueness of a B α having a given normal component B z on the boundary ?D.
  2. The asymptotic behaviour of B α at infinity as well as stability results against changes in the boundary condition on ?D and in the value of α are established.
  3. The energy of B α is shown to be smaller than the energy of the open field having the same B z on ?D, thus confirming an earlier conjecture (Aly, 1984).
  4. B α is proved to not be a Taylor-Heyvaerts-Priest state, in spite of the fact that its relative helicity H is finite and that it is the only solution of the Lagrange-Euler equation associated with the problem of minimizing the energy among all the fields having the same value of H and the same B z on ?D.

Using orbital imaging radar, we have detected a large number of circular structures in the southwestern Egyptian desert, covering more than 4500 km2 close to the Gilf Kebir plateau in sandstones of Upper Cretaceous. Fieldwork confirmed that it is a new impact crater field: 13 craters from 20 m to 1 km in diameter were studied. The impact origin is confirmed by the observation of shock-related structures, such as shatter cones and planar fractures in quartz grains of breccia. Considering the extension of the crater field, it was possibly created by several meteorites that broke up when entering the atmosphere. To cite this article: P. Paillou et al., C. R. À partir d'images satellites issues de systèmes radar, nous avons détecté un grand nombre de structures circulaires dans le Sud-Ouest du désert égyptien, s'étendant sur plus de 4500 km2 à l'est du plateau du Gilf Kebir, dans des grès du Crétacé supérieur. Une étude sur le terrain a permis de vérifier qu'il s'agit d'un champ d'impacts météoritiques jusque là inconnu : 13 structures, d'un diamètre compris entre 20 m et 1 km, ont été reconnues comme cratères d'impact. La présence d'un grand nombre de cônes de percussion et de brèches dans lesquelles des quartz choqués à structures planaires ont été observés confirment l'hypothèse de l'impact. Considérant l'extension du champ d'impact, il a probablement été créé par plusieurs météorites qui se sont fragmentées dans l'atmosphère terrestre. Pour citer cet article : P. Paillou et al., C. R. Models of the magnetic field in the solar chromosphere and corona are still mainly based on theoretical extrapolations of photospheric measurements. For the practical calculation of the global field, the so-called source-surface model has been introduced, in which the influence of the solar wind is described by the requirement that the field be radial at some exterior (source) surface. Then the assumption that the field is current-free in the volume between the photosphere and this surface allows for its determination from the photospheric measurement. In the present paper a generalization of the source-surface model to force-free fields is proposed. In the generalized model the parameter( = ×B·B/B 2)must be non-constant (or vanish identically) and currents are restricted to regions with closed field lines. A mathematical algorithm for computing the field from boundary data is devised.  相似文献
