We examined changes at the community and population level of sedimentary diatoms over a wide temporal and spatial gradient
of metal pollution encountered in cores from three lakes in the Abitibi mining region (Québec, Canada). Diatom communities
on the whole appeared to be very tolerant of metal contamination, as shown by diatom cell accumulation rates decreasing only
under the most severe conditions of contamination, which were found from the 1930s to the 1980s in Lac Dufault (cadmium, up
to 94 μg/g dry sediment; Cu, up to 8600 μg/g; Zn, up to 9000 μg/g). Under the moderate conditions of contamination observed
in the other two lakes and in the most recent sediment of Lac Dufault, diatom cell accumulation rates tended to increase over
values typical of the pre-mining period. However, there were increasing rearrangements of the community composition along
the contamination gradient. Under moderate metal enrichment, the diatom community of Lac Vaudray experienced only subtle changes,
with Cyclotella stelligera, albeit decreasing, remaining the dominant taxon. In the intermediately contaminated Lac Caron, several benthic taxa, noticeably
Cymbella silesiaca and several Fragilaria species, rose in taxonomic importance. The most extreme contamination observed in Lac Dufault led to a severely impoverished
community almost entirely represented by Achnanthes minutissima and Brachysira vitrea. With increasing levels of contamination, there was a shift from planktonic to benthic taxa and morphotypes and a consistent
decrease in the siliceous stomatocysts/diatom frustules ratio. These trends suggest that littoral zones may represent an
important refugium under conditions of high contamination. Responses to metal stress were in general more evident at the population
than at the community level. Cyclotella stelligera and B. vitrea had a consistent negative and positive response, respectively, along the gradient and are the most promising indicators of

The Italian strong-motion database was created during a joint project between Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia
(INGV, Italian Institute for Geophysics and Vulcanology) and Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (DPC, Italian Civil Protection). The aim of the project was the collection, homogenization and distribution of strong motion data acquired in Italy in the
period 1972–2004 by different institutions, namely Ente Nazionale per l’Energia Elettrica (ENEL, Italian electricity company), Ente per le Nuove tecnologie, l’Energia e l’Ambiente (ENEA, Italian energy and environment organization) and DPC. Recently the strong-motion data relative to the 23th December 2009, Parma (Mw = 5.4 and Mw = 4.9) and to the April
2009 L’Aquila sequences (13 earthquakes with 4.1 ≤ Mw ≤ 6.3) were included in the Italian Accelerometric Archive (ITACA) database
(beta release). The database contains 7,038 waveforms from analog and digital instruments, generated by 1.019 earthquakes
with magnitude up to 6.9 and can be accessed on-line at the web site . The strong motion data are provided in the unprocessed and processed versions. This article describes the steps followed
to process the acceleration time series recorded by analogue and digital instruments. The procedures implemented involve:
baseline removal, instrumental correction, band pass filtering with acausal filters, integration of the corrected acceleration
in order to obtain velocity and displacement waveforms, computation of acceleration response spectra and strong motion parameters.
This procedure is applied to each accelerogram and it is realised to preserve the low frequency content of the records. 相似文献

Current computational resources and physical knowledge of the seismic wave generation and propagation processes allow for reliable numerical and analytical models of waveform generation and propagation. From the simulation of ground motion, it is easy to extract the desired earthquake hazard parameters. Accordingly, a scenario-based approach to seismic hazard assessment has been developed, namely the neo-deterministic seismic hazard assessment (NDSHA), which allows for a wide range of possible seismic sources to be used in the definition of reliable scenarios by means of realistic waveforms modelling. Such reliable and comprehensive characterization of expected earthquake ground motion is essential to improve building codes, particularly for the protection of critical infrastructures and for land use planning. Parvez et al. (Geophys J Int 155:489–508, 2003) published the first ever neo-deterministic seismic hazard map of India by computing synthetic seismograms with input data set consisting of structural models, seismogenic zones, focal mechanisms and earthquake catalogues. As described in Panza et al. (Adv Geophys 53:93–165, 2012), the NDSHA methodology evolved with respect to the original formulation used by Parvez et al. (Geophys J Int 155:489–508, 2003): the computer codes were improved to better fit the need of producing realistic ground shaking maps and ground shaking scenarios, at different scale levels, exploiting the most significant pertinent progresses in data acquisition and modelling. Accordingly, the present study supplies a revised NDSHA map for India. The seismic hazard, expressed in terms of maximum displacement (Dmax), maximum velocity (Vmax) and design ground acceleration (DGA), has been extracted from the synthetic signals and mapped on a regular grid over the studied territory. 相似文献

Diatom remains were analysed in two short sediment cores from a subalpine Italian lake (Lake Orta), known for its major industrial pollution dating from the late 1920s, which has only recently been stopped. Copper was recognised as the main toxic agent for diatoms during the first 30 years of pollution (peak value: 100 g l-1 in the late 1950s). A diatom community similar to other deep subalpine lakes existed in the past, and was disrupted by the pollution events. Acute and long-term effects of Cu contamination were tracked by changes in three distinct groups of species around the sharp boundary corresponding to the onset of the pollution. These groups were respectively composed of: (1) Species quickly extirpated by the discharge, mostly belonging to Fragilaria and Cyclotella and never reappearing; (2) Species apparently not affected, or not immediately affected, by the pollution, showing no definite trends with time. Synedra species, with various deformities, were conspicuous among these; (3) Species with accumulation rates increasing with time irrespective of pollution, mostly belonging to Achnanthes. We introduce a new method based on the analysis of the topographical alignments and used to delineate the structural boundaries of the nodes, which permits the definition of relatively narrow earthquake-prone areas by the pattern recognition approach. The structurally bounded nodes capable of earthquakes with M ≥ 6.0, identified with pattern recognition, in fact, cover a significantly smaller area of the study region as compared with that defined by Gorshkov et al. A general coastal retreat affects almost all the beaches of the Apulia region (southern Italy). In particular, the coastal strip of the Gulf of Manfredonia shows an evident retreat due to human activity. To control coastal erosion, several defence interventions have been realised: breakwaters, shore parallel defences, and, above all, several types of groynes (rectilinear, hook-shaped, T-shaped) were built along the shoreline in accordance with local request. Nowadays, there are about 300 coastal defences built up to protect against human activities. A laser scanner survey of these defences, using a Leica Geosystems HDS3000, was carried out between April 2006 and September 2008 to collect data about the beach profiles and changes occurring in the defence framework. The survey work consists of 3D rendering of defences in order to make comparisons between scans of different periods. Overlap between the points cloud of the whole coastline showed that defences preserved their own profile when no human interventions took place. Moreover, throughout the length of the investigated area, not a single trend occurred in the beach profile: according to the defence framework, some stretches of coast display advancing trend, while others are stable or retreating. Therefore, this preliminary study indicated that the changes that occurred in the beach profiles and defence structures are mainly due to human interventions. 相似文献

The present study identified and quantified dinoflagellate cysts in surface sediments from three Mediterranean lagoons. Sediment samples were recovered from 11 stations in May 2009 at Cabras Lagoon, eight stations in May 2010 at Corru S'Ittiri Lagoon, and five stations in May 2011 at Santa Giusta Lagoon. Fifty-three dinoflagellate cyst morphotypes were identified. Sixteen species are first reports for the lagoons, and two for the Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, a new Scrippsiella species was discovered in Cabras. Seven harmful algal species were identified, primarily belonging to the potentially toxic genus Alexandrium. Total cyst abundance, number of morphotypes, and assemblages varied among lagoons, and each lagoon showed a distinct morphotype composition. A degree of heterogeneity was also detected within lagoon. Cabras and Santa Giusta cyst assemblages were characterised by morphotypes belonging to the autotrophic genus Scrippsiella, whereas Corru S'Ittiri assemblages showed dominance of heterotrophic morphotypes, including Protoperidinium cf tricingulatum. Differentiation among lagoons was also evident according to environmental conditions. Salinity proved to be a fundamental variable in determining total cyst abundance, morphotype number, and composition. This study was among the first to examine dinoflagellate cyst composition in coastal lagoons, especially from the Mediterranean region, and contributed data that increased our knowledge of cyst-producing dinoflagellates in these environments. 相似文献

This paper presents the results of analyses measuring variations in anthropic pressure and the influence of anthropic pressure on the variations in subsidence rates from 1954 to 2005 in the Tivoli-Guidonia area, located to the East of Rome, Italy. In the last 60 years, this area underwent exceptional demographic growth, as well as an increase in the quarrying and hydrothermal industries. The calculation of the increase in anthropic pressure was based on two factors: the expansion of built-up areas and the increase in quarrying. Photogrammetric techniques permitted a multi-temporal analysis of aerial photos taken in 1954, 1985, 1993, 1998 and 2005. The aim of this analysis was to estimate the increase in both urban surface area and travertine quarrying. Non-conventional techniques, such as the reconstruction of photograms using photo retouching software, allowed for the use of aerial photos from 1954. These photos were fundamental for establishing a medium-term evaluation of anthropic activity in the area. The results of the photogrammetric analysis were compared to the phases of acceleration and stabilization in subsidence phenomena, deduced from a RADAR interferometry study published by the Italian Ministry of the Environment. This comparison showed a close relationship between the rise and temporary halt of anthropic development and the rise and fall of subsidence rates. Furthermore, data on the distribution of private wells in the study area, variations in the groundwater table level and the precipitation regime were analyzed, but, although helpful in defining the geological context and considerable transformations of the territory, they were considered as qualitative data due to the lack of systematic measures or an unclear relationship to the variations in subsidence rate. Despite the difficulties involved in evaluating both the amount of anthropic pressure and the role of different human activities on environmental change, it was possible to estimate the variations in anthropic pressure and their influence on potentially dangerous geological processes. 相似文献
