Groundwater samples collected from the East Bokaro coalfield of Jharkhand state, India during the dry and rainy seasons of the year 2012. Samples were analyzed for the assessment of groundwater quality in the study area. The results of the chemical analysis indicate that the pH values were found alkaline in nature during both the season. The major cations in groundwater was in the order of Na+>Ca2+>Mg2+>K+ during the dry season while Ca2+>Na+>Mg2+>K+ during the rainy season. The abundance of the major anions was of HCO3->SO42->Cl->NO3->F- did not change on the seasonal basis. The average NO3-concentration was exceeded the desirable limit for drinking water as per Indian standard in the rainy season. Silicate weathering was inferred to be a dominant process, controlling the groundwater chemistry in both seasons, with lesser contributions by carbonate weathering and ion exchange. Leaching of salts from the unsaturated zone also has a major impact on groundwater quality during the rainy season. The water quality data indicate that groundwater is generally suitable for irrigation. However, higher salinity and residual sodium carbonate values at some sites may limit groundwater use and therefore an adequate drainage and water management plan for the study area is required.  相似文献

In this article, the interannual variability of certain dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics of various sectors in the Asian summer monsoon domain was examined during the onset phase over the south Indian peninsula (Kerala Coast). Daily average (0000 and 1200 UTC) reanalysis data sets of the National Centre for Environmental Prediction/National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) for the period 1948–1999 were used. Based on 52 years onset date of the Indian summer monsoon, we categorized the pre-onset, onset, and post-onset periods (each an average of 5 days) to investigate the interannual variability of significant budget terms over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the Indian peninsula. A higher difference was noticed in low-level kinetic energy (850 hPa) and the vertically integrated generation of kinetic energy over the Arabian Sea from the pre-onset, onset, and post-onset periods. Also, significant changes were noticed in the net tropospheric moisture and diabatic heating over the Arabian Sea and Indian peninsula from the pre-onset to the post-onset period. It appears that attaining the magnitude of 40 m2 s−2 and then a sharp rise in kinetic energy at 850 hPa is an appropriate time to declare the onset of the summer monsoon over India. In addition to a sufficient level of net tropospheric moisture (40 mm), a minimum strength of low-level flow is needed to trigger convective activity over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. An attempt was also made to develop a location-specific prediction of onset dates of the summer monsoon over India based on energetics and basic meteorological parameters using multivariate statistical techniques. The regression technique was developed with the data of May and June for 42 years (1948–1989) and validated with 10 years NCEP reanalysis from 1990 to 1999. It was found that the predicted onset dates from the regression model are fairly in agreement with the observed onset dates obtained from the Indian Meteorology Department.  相似文献

Udumbanchola Taluk, located in the fragile zone of Western Ghats in the Idukki District of Kerala has undergone severe land use changes in the past century. The changing land use scenario of Udumbanchola Taluk was assessed using remote sensing technique. The historic land use map was derived from topographic maps of Survey of India, surveyed in 1910 and published during 1912–14. The land use map of 1997 was generated through the visual interpretation of IRS—1 C LISSIII images supported by ground truths and was observed that the original land use system was highly modified. The comparative study shows that the settlement areas that occupied hardly 0.73 % in 1910 were increased to 30.57 % in 1997 by transferring forest lands, grassland and cardamom plantations. Due to the depletion of natural vegetation and grassland system by the establishment of houses, cash crops and infrastructure facilities, combined with the absence of sufficient land management measures in the side slopes resulted severe land degradation and the present status of degraded lands is about 14.12 % of the total geographical area. It is also observed that the prevailing agro-climatic conditions favorable for the sustenance of sensitive crops like cardamom has undergone changes mainly due to the impact of large-scale land use modifications.  相似文献

The subsurface information gathered during exploration for oil and gas in the Cambay basin shows it as a deep graben with 5 km or more of Tertiary and Quaternary sediments resting on the Deccan Trap floor. The Trap floor of this graben extends from Lat. 24° N to about Lat. 19° N and possibly further south. The basin is divisible into separate morphotectonic blocks as a result of block differentiation in the Trap basement, reflected in the structural attitudes of the overlying sediments. This differentiation is believed to have originated in the Paleocene. The dominant structural grain of the area to south of the Narmada river is ENE-WSW with block faulting in the Traps along the older Satpura trend. North of the Narmada river, the trend is longitudinal upto the Meshwa river while further north the trends veer to a NNW-SSE alignment. These latter trends, in the greater part of the Cambay basin, were impressed early during its subsidence and are the result of reactivation along the old Dharwarian trends in post-Delhi times. Maximum thickness of the Traps penetrated so far is near Mechsana and Cambay where more than 1000 meters thickness has been drilled through. The drilling and gravity-magnetic evidence shows the thickness of Deccan Traps in this trough to be of the order of 2.5 km and points to the possibility of active subsidence of Cambay basin, concomitant with the outpouring of the basaltic lavas. The age of the Traps in the Cambay basin, as evidenced by the available data, is Upper Crealaceous. The influence of the structural grain of the basaltic floor on the overlying sedimentary sequence is evidenced during all the stages in the evolution of the Cambay Tertiary basin. Conglomerates, wackes and reddish brown clays of exclusive Trap derivation predominate in the sedimentary section in the initial stage of the basin evolution during Paleocene. General absence of well developed terrigenous reservoirs on a regional scale in the Paleogene section is due to predominance of Trap terrain as the provenance of clastic detritus, contributing essentially argillaceous matter.  相似文献

The present study aims at assessing water quality of river Yamuna in one of the world’s most polluted and populated megacities, Delhi. Conductivity, salinity and sodium content were within the permissible categories. Chloride concentration exceeded acceptable levels of drinking water guidelines. Water quality was poor at all locations with respect to heavy metal contamination, especially along the lower section of the Delhi stretch. Heavy metal concentrations were manifold higher than the acceptable limits of drinking water according to the BIS guidelines and reached ~29, 4.9, 10, 31, 27, 83, 7.3 and 27 times higher, respectively, for metals aluminum, copper, chromium, cadmium, iron, lead, manganese and nickel. The Najafgarh and the Shahdara drains are major point sources. Low oxidation–reduction potential reflected high organic loads and traces of eutrophication together with significant levels of nitrate and total phosphate. Discharges from agriculture, sewage and power plants could be important sources of high metal concentration. This calls for urgent measures to be taken for prevention of metal contamination in the river, through both, technology as well as implementation of regulations in order to sustain huge populations in megacities like Delhi. Waste water treatment from point sources needs tremendous improvement on the city. Treatment of the entire waste generated up to the tertiary level is required for minimizing dissolved solids, especially toxic metals, and rendering reuse in agriculture suitable. Treatment plants need proper operation, maintenance, uninterrupted power supply and regular monitoring. Various measure and programmes need to be undertaken to ensure safe reuse of wastewater.  相似文献

Flood hazards are the most destructive among all natural disasters and are a constant threat to human’s life and property. Effective disaster risk reduction strategies can be improved by geospatial approach in the way of producing information and knowledge that are useful to plan truly effective actions for the protection from floods. This research aims to develop a quantified predictive model of flood susceptibility in the Ghatal and Tamluk subdivision of Medinipur district of West Bengal, India, by means of empirically selected and weighted spatial predictors of flood. The weighted prediction model is used to quantify the spatial associations between individual geospatial factors within the flood inundated study area. Yule’s coefficient and distance distribution analysis are used to assign weights to individual geo-factors, and finally weighted spatial predictors are integrated to a multi-class index overlay analysis to derive the spatially explicit predictive model of flood susceptibility. The resultant susceptibility model reveals that approximately 32.35 and 52.99% of the total study areas (3261.45 km2) are under the category of high-to-moderate flood susceptible zone. Quantitative results of this study could be integrated into the policy process in the formulation of local and national government plans for the future flood mitigation management and also to develop appropriate infrastructure in order to protect the lives and properties of the common people of the Medinipur district.  相似文献

The attenuation properties of the crust in the Chamoli region of Himalaya have been examined by estimating the frequency-dependent relationships of quality factors for P waves (Qα) and for S waves (Qβ) in the frequency range 1.5–24 Hz. The extended coda normalization method has been applied on the waveforms of 25 aftershocks of the 1999 Chamoli earthquake (M 6.4) recorded at five stations. The average value of Qα is found to be varied from 68 at 1.5 Hz to 588 at 24 Hz while it varies from 126 at 1.5 Hz to 868 at 24 Hz for Qβ. The estimated frequency-dependent relations for quality factors are Qα = (44 ± 1)f(0.82±.04) and Qβ = (87 ± 3)f(0.71±.03). The rate of increase of Q(f) for P and S waves in the Chamoli region is comparable with the other regions of the world. The ratio Qβ/Qα is greater than one in the region which along with the frequency dependence of quality factors indicates that scattering is an important factor contributing to the attenuation of body waves in the region. A comparison of attenuation relation for S wave estimated here (Qβ = 87f0.71) with that of coda waves (Qc = 30f1.21) obtained by Mandal et al. (2001) for the same region shows that Qc > Qβ for higher frequencies (>8 Hz) in the region. This indicates a possible high frequency coda enrichment which suggests that the scattering attenuation significantly influences the attenuation of S waves at frequencies >8 Hz. This observation may be further investigated using multiple scattering models. The attenuation relations for quality factors obtained here may be used for the estimation of source parameters and near-source simulation of earthquake ground motion of the earthquakes, which in turn are required for the assessment of seismic hazard in the region.  相似文献

A new hydrostatic mapping function is proposed by modifying the analytical solution of the Chapman grazing incident (Chi) function. Applicability of this mapping function is evaluated over the Indian region by comparing it with the true value of mapping function estimated through ray-tracing the refractivity profile of neutral atmosphere as well as by comparing it with the Niell and Global Mapping Functions. This comparison shows that the new mapping function, agrees very well with the ray-traces values and it is in par with if not better than the other global mapping functions for very high zenith angles up to ~88°.  相似文献

In the frame of the third CAWSES tidal campaign in June–August 2007, lidar and satellite data were collected and compared with numerical models. Continuous nocturnal middle atmospheric temperature measurements performed with a Rayleigh lidar located at La Reunion Island (20.8°S–55.5°E) were obtained for three subsequent nights. The results clearly show the presence of tidal components with a downward phase propagation. Comparisons with SABER satellite data show good agreement on tidal amplitude; however, some differences on the structures are reported probably due to the zonal nature of the retrieval provided by the SABER data. The observed tidal components are compared with two different numerical models such as the 2D global scale wave model and the 3D-GCM LMDz-REPROBUS. Both models reveal good agreement with temperature lidar patterns, while simulated tidal amplitudes are smaller by a factor of around 2–2.5 K.  相似文献

2-D shallow velocity structure is derived by travel-time inversion of the first arrival seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection data along the E–W trending Narayanpur–Nandurbar and N–S Kothar–Sakri profiles, located in the Narmada–Tapti region of the Deccan syneclise. Deccan volcanic (Trap) rocks are exposed along the two profiles. Inversion of seismic data reveals two layered velocity structures above the basement along the two profiles. The first layer with a P-wave velocity of 5.15–5.25 km s?1 and thickness varying from 0.7–1.5 km represents the Deccan Trap formation along the Narayanpur–Nandurbar profile. The Trap layer velocity ranges from 4.5 to 5.20 km s?1 and the thickness varies from 0.95 to 1.5 km along the Kothar–Sakri profile. The second layer represents the low velocity Mesozoic sediments with a P-wave velocity of 3.5 km s?1 and thickness ranging from about 0.70 to 1.6 km and 0.55 to 1.1 km along the E–W and N–S profiles, respectively. Presence of a low-velocity zone (LVZ) below the volcanic rocks in the study area is inferred from the travel-time ‘skip’ and amplitude decay of the first arrival refraction data together with the prominent wide-angle reflection phase immediately after the first arrivals from the Deccan Trap formation. The basement with a P-wave velocity of 5.8–6.05 km s?1 lies at a depth ranging from 1.5 to 2.45 km along the profiles. The velocity models of the profiles are similar to each other at the intersection point. The results indicate the existence of a Mesozoic basin in the Narmada–Tapti region of the Deccan syneclise.  相似文献
