This work aims to provide a dynamic assessment of flood risk and community resilience by explicitly accounting for variable human behaviour, e.g. risk-taking and awareness-raising attitudes. We consider two different types of socio-hydrological systems: green systems, whereby societies deal with risk only via non-structural measures, and technological systems, whereby risk is dealt with also by structural measures, such as levees. A stylized model of human–flood interactions is first compared to real-world data collected at two test sites (People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the city of Rome, Italy) and then used to explore plausible trajectories of flood risk. The results show that flood risk in technological systems tends to be significantly lower than in green systems. However, technological systems may undergo catastrophic events, which lead to much higher losses. Furthermore, green systems prove to be more resilient than technological ones, which makes them more capable of withstanding environmental and social changes.

Riverbank retreat along a bend of the Cecina River, Tuscany (central Italy) was monitored across a near annual cycle (autumn 2003 to summer 2004) with the aim of better understanding the factors influencing bank changes and processes at a seasonal scale. Seven flow events occurred during the period of investigation, with the largest having an estimated return period of about 1·5 years. Bank simulations were performed by linking hydrodynamic, fluvial erosion, groundwater flow and bank stability models, for the seven flow events, which are representative of the typical range of hydrographs that normally occur during an annual cycle. The simulations allowed identification of (i) the time of onset and cessation of mass failure and fluvial erosion episodes, (ii) the contributions to total bank retreat made by specific fluvial erosion and mass‐wasting processes, and (iii) the causes of retreat. The results show that the occurrence of bank erosion processes (fluvial erosion, slide failure, cantilever failure) and their relative dominance differ significantly for each event, depending on seasonal hydrological conditions and initial bank geometry. Due to the specific planimetric configuration of the study bend, which steers the core of high velocity fluid away from the bank at higher flow discharges, fluvial erosion tends to occur during particular phases of the hydrograph. As a result fluvial erosion is ineffective at higher peak discharges, and depends more on the duration of more moderate discharges. Slide failures appear to be closely related to the magnitude of peak river stages, typically occurring in close proximity to the peak phase (preferentially during the falling limb, but in some cases even before the peak), while cantilever failures more typically occur in the late phase of the flow hydrograph, when they may be induced by the cumulative effects of any fluvial erosion. The partitioning of Fe and Mg between the M1 and M2 octahedral sites of olivine has been investigated by in situ time-of-flight
neutron powder diffraction. The degree of M-cation order was determined from direct measurements of site occupancies in a
synthetic sample of Fo50Fa50 heated to 1250 °C at the Fe-FeO oxygen buffer. Fe shows slight preference for M1 at temperatures
below about 600 °C, progressively disordering on heating to this temperature. Above 630 °C, the temperature at which site
preferences cross over (T
cr), Fe preferentially occupies M2, becoming progressively more ordered into M2 on increasing temperature. The cation-ordering
behaviour is discussed in relation to the temperature dependence of the M1 and M2 site geometries, and it is suggested that
vibrational entropy, crystal field effects and changes in bond characteristics play a part in the cross-over of partitioning
behaviour. The temperature dependence of site ordering is modelled using a Landau expansion of the free energy of ordering
of the type ΔG = −hQ + gTQ + (T − T
c)Q

4, with a/h = 0.00406 K−1, b/h = 2.3, T
c = 572 K and g/h = 0.00106 K−1. These results suggest that the high-temperature ordering behaviour across the forsterite-fayalite join will have a bearing

The continental shelf and the upper slope of the Gulf of Palermo (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) in the depth interval ranging from 50 to 1,500 m were mapped for the first time with Multi Beam echosounder and high resolution seismic. Seven submarine canyons are confined to the upper slope or indent the shelf-edge and enter the Palermo intraslope basin at a depth of around 1,300 m. The canyons evolved through concurrent top-down turbiditic processes and bottom-up retrogressive mass failures. Most of the mass failure features of the area are related to canyon-shaping processes and only few of them are not confined to the upper slope. In general, these features probably do not represent a significant tsunami hazard along the coast. The geological element that controls the evolution of the canyons and induces sediment instability corresponds to the steep slope gradient, especially in the western sector of the Gulf, where the steepest canyons are located. The structural features mapped in the Palermo offshore contributed to the regulation of mass failure processes in the area, with direct faults and antiform structures coinciding with some of the canyon heads. Furthermore, the occurrence of pockmarks and highs that probably consist of authigenic carbonates above faulted and folded strata suggests a local relationship between structural control, fluid escape processes and mass failure. This paper presents a valuable high-resolution morphologic dataset of the Gulf of Palermo, which constitutes a reliable base for evaluating the geo-hazard potential related to slope failure in the area. 相似文献

We study, by numerical simulations, the propagation of an axisymmetric supersonic jet in an isothermal King atmosphere and we analyse the evolution of the resulting X-ray properties and their dependence on the jet physical parameters. We show the existence of two distinct regimes of interaction, with strong and weak shocks. In the first case shells of enhanced X-ray emission are to be expected, whereas in the second case we expect deficit of X-ray emission coincident with the cocoon. Analysing the results of our simulations we find that the jet kinetic power is the main parameter controlling the transition between the two regimes. We also discuss, in the same scheme, the ICM heating induced by the jet propagation, considering its effects on the observed relations between the cluster X-ray luminosity and temperature and between cluster entropy and temperature. 相似文献

Extragalactic radio sources are separated in two classes according to their specific luminosity: Fanaroff-Riley I and II. The origin of this dichotomy can be due either to intrinsec different properties of the AGN or to interaction of the jet with different enviroments. We assume that jets are always relativistic and supersonic close to their source, as recent observations suggest, and we explore the conditions in which the jets decelerate assuming FR I morphology. The thermal expansion, structural changes and the site partitioning of Co and Mg in synthetic CoMgSiO4 olivine have been studied by in situ time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction as a function of temperature, between 25 and
1,000°C. Thermal expansion of the unit cell dimensions and volume are linear within this temperature range and give no indications
of a phase transition, although the thermoelastic behaviour indicates a slight strain minimum around 700°C. Co2+ shows a strong preference for the M1 site throughout this temperature range with an oscillatory behaviour; it decreases slightly
at about 300°C, climbing up to nearly its original value at around 800°C and then decreasing by about 30% at 1,000°C. This
behaviour is in contrast with that of (Fe, Mg)2SiO4 olivine, in which the initial Fe2+ site preference for the M1 site switches to the M2 site beyond a cross-over temperature. The oscillatory site preference
in (CoMg)-olivine as a function of temperature is reflected in the M–O polyhedral volume changes and M–O bond lengths, as
well as, thermoelastic strain and atomic thermal displacement parameters. The imbalance between the increasing vibrational
and decreasing configurational entropy contributions, together with covalent bonding effects rather than crystal field contributions,
seem to drive the cation partitioning in (CoMg)-olivine. 相似文献
