The development and application of geochemical techniques to identify redox conditions in modern and ancient aquatic environments has intensified over recent years. Iron (Fe) speciation has emerged as one of the most widely used procedures to distinguish different redox regimes in both the water column and sediments, and is the main technique used to identify oxic, ferruginous (anoxic, Fe(II) containing) and euxinic (anoxic, sulfidic) water column conditions. However, an international sediment reference material has never been developed. This has led to concern over the consistency of results published by the many laboratories that now utilise the technique. Here, we report an interlaboratory comparison of four Fe speciation reference materials for palaeoredox analysis, which span a range of compositions and reflect deposition under different redox conditions. We provide an update of extraction techniques used in Fe speciation and assess the effects of both test portion mass, and the use of different analytical procedures, on the quantification of different Fe fractions in sedimentary rocks. While atomic absorption spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma‐optical emission spectrometry produced comparable Fe measurements for all extraction stages, the use of ferrozine consistently underestimated Fe in the extraction step targeting mixed ferrous–ferric minerals such as magnetite. We therefore suggest that the use of ferrozine is discontinued for this Fe pool. Finally, we report the combined data of four independent Fe speciation laboratories to characterise the Fe speciation composition of the reference materials. These reference materials are available to the community to provide an essential validation of in‐house Fe speciation measurements.  相似文献

Trade-wind cumuli constitute the cloud type with the highest frequency of occurrence on Earth, and it has been shown that their sensitivity to changing environmental conditions will critically influence the magnitude and pace of future global warming. Research over the last decade has pointed out the importance of the interplay between clouds, convection and circulation in controling this sensitivity. Numerical models represent this interplay in diverse ways, which translates into different responses of trade-cumuli to climate perturbations. Climate models predict that the area covered by shallow cumuli at cloud base is very sensitive to changes in environmental conditions, while process models suggest the opposite. To understand and resolve this contradiction, we propose to organize a field campaign aimed at quantifying the physical properties of trade-cumuli (e.g., cloud fraction and water content) as a function of the large-scale environment. Beyond a better understanding of clouds-circulation coupling processes, the campaign will provide a reference data set that may be used as a benchmark for advancing the modelling and the satellite remote sensing of clouds and circulation. It will also be an opportunity for complementary investigations such as evaluating model convective parameterizations or studying the role of ocean mesoscale eddies in air–sea interactions and convective organization.  相似文献

Attenuation of seismic waves, quantified by the seismic quality factor Q, holds important information for seismic interpretation, due to its sensitivity to rock and fluid properties. A recently published study of Q, based on surface seismic reflection data, used a modified spectral ratio approach (QVO), but both source and receiver responses were treated as isotropic, based on simple raypath arguments. Here, this assumption has been tested by computing apparent attenuation generated by frequency-dependent directivity of typical marine source and receiver arrays and acquisition geometries. Synthetic wavelet spectra were computed for reflected rays, summed over the first Fresnel zone, from the base of a single interval, 50–3000 m thick and velocity 2000 m/s, overlying a 2200 m/s half-space, and for offsets of 71–2071 m. The source and receiver geometry were those of an actual survey. The modelled spectra are clearly affected by directivity, most strongly because of surface ghosts. In general, the strong high-frequency component, produced by the array design, leads to apparently negative attenuation in individual reflection events, though this is dependent on offset and target depth. For shallow targets (less than 400–500 ms two-way traveltime (TWT) depth), apparent Q-values as extreme as ?50 to ?100 were obtained. For deeper target depths, the directivity effect is far smaller. The implications of the model study were tested on real data. QVO was applied to 20 true-spectrum-processed CMPs, in a shallow (405–730 ms TWT) and a deeper (1000–1300 ms TWT) interval, firstly using a measured far-field source signature (effectively isotropic), and secondly using computed directivity effects instead. Mean interval Q?1-values for the deeper interval, 0.029 ± 0.011 and 0.027 ± 0.018 for conventional and directional processing, respectively, suggested no directivity influence on attenuation estimation. For the shallow interval (despite poor spectral signal-to-noise ratios and hence scattered attenuation estimates), directional processing removed directivity-generated irregularities from the spectral ratios, resulting in an improvement from Q?1int = ?0.036 ± 0.130 to a realistic Q?1int = 0.012 ± 0.030: different at 94% confidence level. Equivalent Q-values are: for the deeper interval, 35 and 37 for conventional and directional processing, respectively, and ?28 and 86 for the shallow interval. These results support the conclusions of the model studies, i.e. that source/receiver directivity has a negligible effect except for shallow targets (e.g. TWT depth ≤ 500 ms) imaged with conventional acquisition geometry. In such cases directivity corrections to spectra are strongly recommended.  相似文献

The relation between gravity anomalies, topography and volcanism can yield important insights about the internal dynamics of planets. From the power spectra of gravity and topography on Earth, Venus and Mars we infer that gravity anomalies have likely predominantly sources below the lithosphere up to about spherical harmonic degree l=30 for Earth, 40 for Venus and 5 for Mars. To interpret the low-degree part of the gravity spectrum in terms of possible sublithospheric density anomalies we derive radial mantle viscosity profiles consistent with mineral physics. For these viscosity profiles we then compute gravity and topography kernels, which indicate how much gravity anomaly and how much topography is caused by a density anomaly at a given depth. With these kernels, we firstly compute an expected gravity-topography ratio. Good agreement with the observed ratio indicates that for Venus, in contrast to Earth and Mars, long-wavelength topography is largely dynamically supported from the sublithospheric mantle. Secondly, we combine an empirical power spectrum of density anomalies inferred from seismic tomography in Earth’s mantle with gravity kernels to model the gravity power spectrum. We find a good match between modeled and observed gravity power spectrum for all three planets, except for 2?l?4 on Venus. Density anomalies in the Venusian mantle for these low degrees thus appear to be very small. We combine gravity kernels and the gravity field to derive radially averaged density anomaly models for the Martian and Venusian mantles. Gravity kernels for l?5 are very small on Venus below ≈800 km depth. Thus our inferences on Venusian mantle density are basically restricted to the upper 800 km. On Mars, gravity anomalies for 2?l?5 may originate from density anomalies anywhere within its mantle. For Mars as for Earth, inferred density anomalies are dominated by l=2 structure, but we cannot infer whether there are features in the lowermost mantle of Mars that correspond to Earth’s Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs). We find that volcanism on Mars tends to occur primarily in regions above inferred low mantle density, but our model cannot distinguish whether or not there is a Martian analog for the finding that Earth’s Large Igneous Provinces mainly originate above the margins of LLSVPs.  相似文献

The magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars of the upper main sequence are well‐suited for investigating the impact of magnetic fields on the surface layers of stars, which leads to abundance inhomogeneities (spots) resulting in photometric variability. The light changes are explained in terms of the oblique rotator model; the derived photometric periods thus correlate with the rotational periods of the stars. CP2 stars exhibiting this kind of variability are classified as α2 Canum Venaticorum (ACV) variables. We have analysed around 3850000 individual photometric WASP measurements of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars and candidates selected from the catalogue of Ap, HgMn, and Am stars, with the ultimate goal of detecting new ACV variables. In total, we found 80 variables, from which 74 are reported here for the first time. The data allowed us to establish variability for 23 stars which had been reported as probably constant in the literature before. Light curve parameters were obtained for all stars by a least‐squares fit with the fundamental sine wave and its first harmonic. Because of the scarcity of Strömgren uvbyβ measurements and the lack of parallax measurements with an accuracy better than 20%, we are not able to give reliable astro‐physical parameters for the investigated objects. The geochemical and mineralogical study of the Quiulacocha tailings impoundment has shown that the hydrological connection of the three studied mine-waste systems at Cerro de Pasco (Pyrite-rich waste-rock dump Excelsior, old tailings impoundment Quiulacocha, and the active tailings impoundment Ocroyoc) is a critical concern for effective acid mine drainage (AMD) control and mine-waste management. The Quiulacocha tailings covered 114 ha, comprising 79 Mt of tailings, which contained  50 wt.% pyrite, and are located at 4340 m altitude in a tropical puna climate with about 1025 mm/a rainfall and 988 mm/a of evaporation. The tailings were partially overlain by the Excelsior waste-rock dump, which contains about 26,400,000 m3 of waste rocks that cover 94 ha and contained  60 wt.% of pyrite, which origin from a massive pyrite-quartz replacement body. Therefore, these two mine-waste deposits had a direct hydrological connection, resulting in the export of AMD produced at Excelsior towards Quiulacocha. In the Quiulacocha impoundment there are two different types of tailings recognized, that interact with the AMD from Excelsior: 1) Zn–Pb-rich tailings and 2) Cu–As-rich tailings. During the sampling, the Zn–Pb-rich part of Quiulacocha was not producing important excesses of AMD from the oxidation zone, since the pH increased to near neutral values at 1 m depth. The underlying tailings were still able to neutralize the acidity produced in the oxidation zone through sulfide oxidation by the carbonates (mainly dolomite and siderite) contained in the Zn–Pb mineral assemblage. The main source of AMD in this mine-waste system is the Excelsior waste-rock dump. Its acid seepage infiltrates into Quiulacocha forming a Fe–Zn–Pb plume with a pH 5.5–6.1 and containing up to 7440 mg/L Fe, 627 mg/L Zn, and 1.22 mg/L Pb. The plume was detected at 10–13 m depth in the stratigraphy of Quiulacocha tailings. Additionally, the AMD seepage outcropping at the base of the Excelsior waste-rock dump was channeled on the tailings surface into the Quiulacocha pond (pH 2.3), which covered the Cu–As-rich tailings. Infiltration of this Fe(III)-rich AMD increased tailings oxidation in the southwestern part of the impoundment, and subsequently liberated arsenic by enargite oxidation. Additionally, the AMD collected in the Quiulacocha pond was pumped into the active Ocroyoc tailings impoundment, where sulfide oxidation was strongly enhanced by the input of dissolved Fe(III). Therefore, the AMD management and a hydrological separation of the different mine-waste systems could be a first step to prevent further extension of the AMD problem in order to prevent increased sulfide oxidation by Fe(III)-rich solutions.  相似文献

Abstract

The European Commission is mandated to consider the inclusion of credits from land-use projects under the clean development mechanism (CDM) and joint implementation (JI), beginning with the second period of the European Union's emission trading scheme (ETS) in its report due in July 2006. Temporary credits from afforestation and reforestation under the CDM are seen by many as posing a technical problem for their use under the ETS. This article summarizes three feasible, efficient and environmentally sound alternatives for achieving the integration of such temporary credits in the European emissions trading market starting in 2008. The first proposal integrates tCERs and lCERs (temporary credits) into the EU ETS by allowing for their direct use for compliance purposes. The second proposal builds on the idea of swapping temporary credits for EU allowances (EUAs) by Member States. The third proposal would not require a political decision at the EU level. Instead supportive Member States or private carbon fund operators would agree to swap temporary credits for the CERs or ERUs they hold in their accounts. All three solutions would be linked to a risk-mitigation strategy based on levying a fee or fixing an exchange rate, which would allow governments to hedge the risk of losing temporary credits.  相似文献

Abstract

This article collates definitions of some key terms commonly used in greenhouse gas reporting and accounting for the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector, and highlights areas of ambiguity and divergent interpretations of key concepts. It uses the example of harvested wood products to demonstrate the impact of different interpretations. The objective is to facilitate clear communication amongst negotiators and practitioners in relation to the terms emissions, removals, sources and sinks. Confusion and misunderstandings that have arisen in the past are rooted in diverging interpretations of the terms ‘emissions’ and ‘removals’ in the context of land use and wood products. One interpretation sees emissions and removals to be approximated by a change in carbon stocks in a number of selected carbon pools that may include or exclude harvested wood products. Another interpretation views emissions and removals as gross fluxes between the atmosphere and the land/wood products system. The various alternative approaches that have been proposed for reporting for harvested wood products are applicable to one or the other of these interpretations: the stock-change and production approaches, focused on stock changes, are applicable to the first interpretation; whereas the atmospheric flow and simple decay approaches focus on fluxes, as in the second interpretation. Whether emissions/removals are approximated by stock change or from gross fluxes, it is critical that a consistent approach is applied across the whole LULUCF/AFOLU sector. Approaches based on stock change are recommended over those based on fluxes.  相似文献

The radial viscosity structure of the Earth is explored on the basis of the geoid observations. The variations of uncertainty in seismic tomography models are accounted for when finding the radial viscosity structure. The new methodology we propose attempts to fit more closely those features of the geoid that are better constrained by tomography models and avoids to fit those features that are poorly constrained. This approach is particularly important because the error of geoid predictions caused by uncertainties in seismic tomography models is overwhelmingly larger than the noise in the geoid measurements. The synthetic tests indicate that the viscosity structures obtained by disregarding the uncertainty variations in seismic tomography models can be biased depending on the geoid spectral band and on the ‘input’ seismic tomography model. When the uncertainty variations in seismic models are considered in the inversion process, results do not indicate a viscosity in the transition zone lower than in the upper mantle. A robust feature found with the new method is a viscosity in the upper mantle two orders of magnitude smaller than in the lower mantle. The error covariance of seismic tomography models is critical for the method we suggest. A covariance matrix rigorously derived by seismologists should help to even more reliably infer the viscosity structure and relation between anomalies in density and seismic velocities from surface observations such as the geoid, and thus lead to a better knowledge of the Earth interior.  相似文献

For more than 150 years gravity anomalies have been used for the determination of geoidal heights, height anomalies and the external gravity field. Due to the fact that precise ellipsoidal heights could not be observed directly, traditionally a free geodetic boundary-value problem (GBVP) had to be formulated which after linearisation is related to gravity anomalies. Since nowadays the three-dimensional positions of gravity points can be determined by global navigation satellite systems very precisely, the modern formulation of the GBVP can be based on gravity disturbances which are related to a fixed GBVP using the known topographical surface of the Earth as boundary surface. The paper discusses various approaches into the solution of the fixed GBVP which after linearization corresponds to an oblique-derivative boundary-value problem for the Laplace equation. Among the analytical solution approaches a Brovar-type solution is worked out in detail, showing many similarities with respect to the classical solution of the scalar free GBVP.  相似文献
