The dynamics of primary production and particulate detritus cycling in the Columbia River Estuary are described, with particular reference to mechanisms that account for patterns within the water column, on the tidal flats, and in the adjacent wetlands. Analysis of patterns in phytoplankton flora and biomass and in distribution of detrital particulate organic matter (DPOC) in the water column indicated that salinities of 1–5 delineated an essentially freshwater flora from a marine or euryhaline flora, and that living phytoplankton was converted to DPOC at the freshwater-brackishwater interface. Similarly, the benthic diatom assemblages on tidal flats reflected either the fresh or the brackish nature of the water inundating the flats. Emergent vascular plants were grouped into six associations by cluster analysis, the associations being separated mainly on the bases of different relative abundances of freshwater, euryhaline or brackishwater species, and on whether samples occurred in high or low marsh areas.Annual rates of net areal 24-hr production averaged 55, 16, and 403gC m−2y−1 for phytoplankton, benthic algae, and emergent vascular vegetation, respectively. Total production over the whole estuary was 17,667 metric tons C y−1 for phytoplankton, 1,545mt C y−1 for benthic algae, and 11,325mt C y−1 for emergent vascular plants, for a grand total to 30,537mt C y−1. Phytoplankton biomass turned over approximately 39 times per year on average, while benthic algae turned over about twice and emergent plants once per year.Budgets for phytoplankton carbon (PPOC) and DPOC were developed based on PPOC and DPOC import and export, grazing loss, and in situ production and conversion of PPOC to DPOC. It is suggested that 36,205mt y−1 of PPOC is converted to DPOC in the estuary, principally at the freshwater-brackishwater interface. About 40,560mt y−1 of PPOC is exported to the ocean, and 159,185mt y−1 of DPOC is transported into the marine zone of the estuary (no data are available on DPOC export to the ocean). Thus, the estuary acts principally as a conduit for the transport of particles to the sea, and only secondarily as a converter of viable phytoplankton cells to detrital carbon and as a trap for DPOC.  相似文献

Detailed measurements of bubble composition, dissolved gas concentrations, and plume dynamics were conducted during a 9-month period at a very intense, shallow (22-m water depth) marine hydrocarbon seep in the Santa Barbara Channel, California. Methane, carbon dioxide, and heavier hydrocarbons were lost from rising seep bubbles, while nitrogen and oxygen were gained. Within the rising seawater bubble plume, dissolved methane concentrations were more than 4 orders of magnitude greater than atmospheric equilibrium concentrations. Strong upwelling flows were observed and bubble-rise times were ~40 s, demonstrating the rapid exchange of gases within the bubble plume.  相似文献

Potential flow based vortex numerical methods have been widely used in aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. In these methods, vortices shed from lifting bodies are traced by using vortex filaments or dipole panels. When the wake elements encounter a downstream body, such as a rudder behind a propeller or a stator behind a rotor, a treatment is necessary to divert the wake elements to pass by the body. This treatment is vital to make wake simulations realistic and to satisfy the non-penetration condition during wake body interaction. It also helps to avoid pure numerical disturbances such as when a vortex filament or an edge of a dipole panel passes through the collection point of a body element; this is a singularity for induced velocity and it will introduce a large numerical disturbance. This necessary treatment for three-dimensional problems with geometrical complexity has not been found to date. In this study, a wake impingement model was developed to divert wake elements to slip over the body surface, model the vortex/body interaction, and predict forces on fluctuating components. The model was also tested on configurations of oscillating foils in tandem with an existing panel method code. Simulation results with the wake impingement model are shown to be in closer agreement with limited published experimental data than those without the model. With the established wake impingement model, force fluctuations on the after body due to the wake vortex impingement were investigated based on a series of simulations. The series varied several parameters including distance between two foils, oscillating frequency, span, rear foil pitch angle, swap angle and vertical position.  相似文献

On 21 May 1989, a major earthquake swarm on the Reykjanes Ridge at59°44 N, 29°32 W at a water depth of about 1000 m andabout 500 km southwest of Iceland was detected on both the WorldwideStandard Seismic Network (WWSSN) and Icelandic seismic networks. As part ofa multi-institutional response to this swarm, the Naval ResearchLaboratory arranged for a P3 Orion Aircraft to deploy sonobuoys and AXBTs inthe immediate vicinity of the swarm activity. The detection of the swarmmotivated a survey of the region in 1990, using the towed SeaMARC IIside-looking sonar system. In 1990–1991 the Russian ShirshovInstitute of Oceanology offered the use of its MIR deep-divingsubmersibles to investigate the rise axis for recent volcanism. During 1992,a scientific team comprised of five US and ten Russian scientists mobilizedthe twin, deep diving Russian submersibles to study the spreading axis ofthe Reykjanes Ridge. The resulting data analyses allows us to conclude thatthe 1989 seismic swarm event occurred adjacent to and east of the largeaxial high in the center of our survey area. The length, width and depthrange of the earthquakes were very similar to major seismic swarm eventsconfined to fissure systems in the Krafla region of Iceland. It is likelythat the earthquake swarm was located on a fresh, well-defined systemof fissures and faults extending south of the northernmost axial highstudied. The earthquake swarm was probably associated with an emanation oflava creating a region of high backscatter, located just to the east of thecentral axial high. In addition, the region of high-backscatterremains unsampled because it lay underneath the nadir of the processedSeaMARC tracks used to plan the submersible survey. However many sampleswere taken and structural studies of the evolving Reykjanes Ridge werecarried out.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

National-scale analyses of land cover effects on water quality can aid in directing environmental policy. We compiled a coastal water quality database for New Zealand comprising 320 estuarine and coastal sites with records between 2013 and 2018. Previous literature had shown strong effects of agricultural and urban land cover on the quality of New Zealand’s rivers, so we examined their effects on estuaries, while controlling for marine dilution and freshwater flushing. Sites with greater freshwater influence had higher nutrient and faecal indicator bacteria concentrations, and turbidity, indicating that open coast and estuarine water quality is reduced predominantly via flows from the land. Nitrate, ammonium, total and dissolved reactive phosphorus, and water column chlorophyll-a concentrations were greater in estuaries with higher urban land cover and total phosphorus concentrations were greater with higher agricultural land cover. There was a marginally significant increase in turbidity as agricultural land cover increased. This is the first national-scale compilation and analysis of New Zealand coastal water quality data, and the first national analysis of land cover effects on water quality in New Zealand estuaries.  相似文献

In 6 of the 7 instances where posteclipse brightening of Io has been reported by observers using blue filters, a major solar flare occurred within 10° of the sub-Jovian longitude in the 100-day interval prior to observation. In none of the 18 instances where no posteclipse brightening was observed did such a flare occur. It is proposed that a phenomenon associated with a major solar flare causes an increase in the trapped particle flux at Io's orbit by an order of magnitude. The posteclipse brightening may be caused by thermoluminescence of Io's surface material upon emergence. Alternatively, it is possible that the increase in trapped particle flux would warm the surface, creating a temporary atmosphere which would precipitate during eclipse cooling and vaporize in the period of warming after reemergence.  相似文献

The January 17, 1994 Northridge earthquake (Mw = 6.7, 34.213° N, 118.537° W, depth = 18.4 km) was recorded extensively in the immediate source region by strong, ground motion accelerometers. The resulting seismograms show complex S wave patterns. Nevertheless, visual correlations of the strong-ground-motion velocity and displacement time-histories clearly identify two significant wave pulses: a secondary S pulse (called S2) arriving 3–5 seconds after the initial S wave pulse (called S1). A plausible assumption is that these phases are generated at areas on the rupturing thrust fault that experienced especially large slip. Conventional travel-time computations, relating the relative arrival times between the onsets of the primary S1 and secondary S2 phases, yield a hypocenter of the initiation point, constrained to a independently etimated fault plane, of the secondary wave source (called H2) at 34.26°N, 118.54° W, with a depth of 14.1 km; the 68% confidence error in depth is 1.3 km. This location is about 6 km up-dip and north from the estimated hypocenter, on the fault plane of the initial principal seismic source (called H1). The seismic moment for both the initial H1 and secondary source H2 was estimated from the SH displacement pulse. Values averaged over eight stations were 8.61 ± 9.56 × 1024 dyne-cm and 2.49 ± 2.31 × 1025 dyne-cm respectively. Reasons why the sum of the two seismic moments is smaller than the total estimated seismic moment of 1.2 × 1026 dyne-cm for the Northridge earthquake are discussed. The location of the initiation point of a second source H2 in the Northridge thrust faulting is consistent with independent computations of the fault slip pattern. The estimated stress drop for the initial and secondary sources are 1 = 150 ± 15 bars and 2 = 110 ± 11 bars, respectively.  相似文献

The abundance of pyrite and other sulfide minerals in mine rock piles is a potentially significant if not a determinative factor in terms of the geochemical and geomechanical evolution of the dumps as oxidation produces acid solutions that drive hydrolysis reactions. A technique is presented here that supports the quantitative determination of pyrite abundance in mine rock dumps by heavy liquid mineral separation to concentrate pyrite for powder X-ray diffraction and then Rietveld method refinement of the diffraction data on a large number of samples using commonly available laboratory equipment. In order to improve and constrain the accuracy of XRD results, binary (pyrite-quartz) and 6-part mineral mixtures (pyrite and rock-forming andesite minerals) spanning a wide range of pyrite concentrations were prepared gravimetrically and run as standards. These standards were then used to minimize errors in pyrite abundance data by constraining key input parameters in the Rietveld refinement. A new polynomial relationship was derived between diffracting crystallite size and the Brindley microabsorption correction input size. This method provides a means to determine uncertainties in pyrite abundance, whereas conventional Rietveld refinement techniques done without the use of standards yield only statistical measures of the least-squares fit, rather than absolute uncertainties in mineral constituent weight percentages. The technique was applied to a number of mine rock pile samples and the uncertainty in the results determined by applying the relationship derived from the 6-part gravimetric standards to the results of the Brindley corrected Rietveld refinements. Uncertainties determined by this method are found to be on the order of ±10% for samples with pyrite content greater than 10 wt% and ±30% for samples with pyrite content less than 10 wt%. In order to evaluate the technique’s improvement upon traditional visual mineral abundance estimation the quantitative results are compared to manual volumetric estimates.  相似文献
