For the 1980–2003 period, we analyzed the relationship between crop yield and three climatic variables (minimum temperature,
maximum temperature, and precipitation) for 12 major Californian crops: wine grapes, lettuce, almonds, strawberries, table
grapes, hay, oranges, cotton, tomatoes, walnuts, avocados, and pistachios. The months and climatic variables of greatest importance
to each crop were used to develop regressions relating yield to climatic conditions. For most crops, fairly simple equations
using only 2–3 variables explained more than two-thirds of observed yield variance. The types of variables and months identified
suggest that relatively poorly understood processes such as crop infection, pollination, and dormancy may be important mechanisms
by which climate influences crop yield. Recent climatic trends have had mixed effects on crop yields, with orange and walnut
yields aided, avocado yields hurt, and most crops little affected by recent climatic trends. Yield-climate relationships can
provide a foundation for forecasting crop production within a year and for projecting the impact of future climate changes. 相似文献

Seagrasses are indicators of ecosystem state because they are sensitive to variations in water composition and clarity resulting from watershed-level impacts. A simulation model designed to studyZostera marina (eelgrass) habitat dynamics in a variable littoral zone environment was used to address the potential ecological responses to eutrophication in lower Chesapeake Bay. The adjacent channel boundary environment is a source of dissolved and particulate materials to the littoral zone. In the simulations, concentrations of key water quality variables in the adjacent estuarine channel boundary were either halved or doubled relative to the base case to investigate light versus nitrogen effects. The role of the seagrass meadow in littoral zone carbon and nitrogen dynamics was evaluated when meadow size was changed in the model. Particulate and dissolved organic carbon accounted for 83% of the submarine light attenuation in the seagrass meadow. In all model runs, the water column concentrations of chlorophylla and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were below the habitat criteria proposed as critical to seagrass survival. Eelgrass community production was carefully regulated by the interactive effects of light, nitrogen, and grazing on epiphyte growth. Increased eelgrass coverage in the littoral zone led to a simulated doubling of ecosystem primary production but reduced the fraction of production by planktonic and sediment microalgae. The simulation model presented here demonstrated the importance of material input from the channel in littoral zone biogeochemical dynamics. Submarine ligh regulated primary production more strongly than inorganic nitrogen concentrations in the model. External DIN concentrations influenced seagrass survival indirectly: enrichment stimulated growth of epiphytes and phytoplankton and promoted shading of the seagras leaf. The model was based upon a unimpacted ecosystem and deteriorated water quality negatively influenced primary production greater than the increases triggered by improved condition. Increased material loading to the littoral zone reduced submarine light availability, increased phytoplankton production, lowered ecosystem production, and reduced subtidal vegetated habitat. This simulation model of the estuarine littoral zone model combines hydrodynamics, biogeochemical sources and sinks, and living resources in order to better understand structure, function, and change in aquatic ecosystems. 相似文献

Echelle spectra have been obtained of the Ca II H and K lines for a sample of metal-poor subdwarf stars as well as for a number of nearby Population I dwarfs selected from among those included in the Mount Wilson HK survey. The main conclusion of this paper is that Ca II H- and K-line emission does occur among subdwarfs. It is particularly notable among those subdwarfs with colours of B − V ≥0.75; all such stars observed exhibit chromospheric emission, although emission is observed among some subdwarfs bluer than this colour. The Ca II K emission profile in most subdwarfs exhibits an asymmetry of V / R >1, similar to that seen in the integrated light of the solar disc. Two quantitative indicators of the contrast between the peaks in the emission profile and the neighbouring photospheric line profile are introduced. Measurements of these indicators show that the level of Ca II emission among the subdwarfs is similar to that among low-activity Population I dwarfs. 相似文献

We discuss the formation of spectral features in the decelerating ejecta of gamma-ray bursts, including the possible effect of inhomogeneities. These should lead to blueshifted and broadened absorption edges and resonant features, especially from H and He. We present a method of determining lower limits on the masses of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars and so constraining the PMS evolutionary tracks. This method uses the redshifted absorption feature observed in some emission-line profiles of T Tauri stars, indicative of infall. The maximum velocity of the accreting material measures the potential energy at the stellar surface, which, combined with an observational determination of the stellar radius, yields the stellar mass. This estimate is a lower limit owing to uncertainties in the geometry and projection effects. Using available data, we show that the computed lower limits can be larger than the masses derived from PMS evolutionary tracks for M 0.5 M. Our analysis also supports the notion that accretion streams do not impact near the stellar poles but probably hit the stellar surface at moderate latitudes. 相似文献

Rb-Sr whole-rock analyses yield a Cambro-Ordovician (495 ± 11 m.y.) sedimentation age for the supposed Precambrian Greenland Group and a late Precambrian age, 680 ± 21 m.y., for parts of the Constant Gneiss, the first confirmation of Precambrian rocks in New Zealand. A Precambrian age for the Greenland Group is thus unlikely and the large area of Upper Cambrian-Lower Ordovician rocks now established can be considered as a lateral equivalent of the fossiliferous Lower Palaeozoic succession of northwest Nelson to the east. The Greenland Group, especially in the Paparoa Range has been affected subsequently by a thermal metamorphic overprint about 360 m.y. ago during the Tuhuan Orogeny. Although the Constant Gneiss must form the local basement to the Greenland Group in north Westland, the former does not appear to be the source of the sediments and the true provenance must lie elsewhere. 相似文献

Spherical aggregates of orthopyroxene are reported from some parts of the Bushveld Complex in a variety of host rocks.Detailed mapping has shown that these spherical aggregates, comprising pyroxenite spheroids in a quartz-norite matrix, are contact phenomena and not stratigraphic markers. Orthopyroxene, biotite and amphibole are enriched in spheroids relative to matrix; their mineral chemistry showing a fairly constant orthopyroxene and plagioclase composition through the spheroids and into the matrix, indicating in-situ formation.Bulk chemistry shows spheroid to matrix tie-lines orthogonal to those generally accepted for silicate liquid immiscibility, but other chemical information is consistent with the occurrence of immiscibility.The formation of the aggregates may be related to the industrial process of spherical agglomeration, by which spheroids are formed by the introduction of an immiscible “bridging liquid” to the melt — probably derived from the floor rocks in this case. The mechanism accounts for the field relationships, petrography and chemistry of the aggregate-matrix system. The petrology of the process equates with a special case of silicate liquid immiscibility induced by local contamination and ageing of the original magma.A similar “bridging liquid” mechanism could also account for the formation of the so-called “boulder bed” beneath the Merensky Reef. 相似文献

Errors are considered in the outer zone contribution to oceanic undulation differences as obtained from a set of potential
coefficients complete to degree 180. It is assumed that the gravity data of the inner zone (a spherical cap), consisting of
either gravity anomalies or gravity disturbances, has negligible error. This implies that error estimates of the total undulation
difference are analyzed. If the potential coefficients are derived from a global field of 1°×1° mean anomalies accurate to
εΔg=10 mgal, then for a cap radius of 10°, the undulation difference error (for separations between 100 km and 2000 km) ranges
from 13 cm to 55 cm in the gravity anomaly case and from 6 cm to 36 cm in the gravity disturbance case. If εΔg is reduced to 1 mgal, these errors in both cases are less than 10 cm. In the absence of a spherical cap, both cases yield
identical error estimates: about 68 cm if εΔg=1 mgal (for most separations) and ranging from 93 cm to 160 cm if εΔg=10 mgal. Introducing a perfect 30-degree reference field, the latter errors are reduced to about 110 cm for most separations. 相似文献

Summary Direct access to the crust and the upper portion of the mantle may be achieved by letting a high temperature (>1100°C) reactor core melt the rock in which it is placed and fall through the resulting magma. Data gathering and retrieval seem feasible. A schematic design of the proposed instrument is given.There are many problems concerning the composition and conditions of the interior of the earth which will not be solved upon completion of the projectedMohole Project. Comparison of the continental crust with the oceanic crust, relative distribution of radioactivity under continents and oceans, and the investigation of the mantle itself require access to greater depths than the present drilling techniques permit. To achieve these aims, it is recommended that a dense, heatgenerating object (such as a nuclear reactor core) be placed in the top of a salt dome. The hot object would melt the salt and fall downward through the moten salt. The sinking object would pass out of the source salt bed into rock at such a depth, say 35 000 feet, that if a few percent of H2O is present at that depth, then a granitic rock would melt at about 700°C. However, encounter with SiO2 containing no water would require a much higher temperature of about 1700°C. The type of rock that actually exists immediately below the source salt bed is unknown, but it is probably not a granitic rock.Thermal considerations indicate that the hole will freeze shut after downward passage of the tool, leaving the tool inside a liquid bubble. If the tool can generate heat long enough to melt its way up, as well as down, it may be possible to obtain magma samples.
