This letter evaluates the consistency of rainfall drop size distribution (DSD) parameters that were estimated from attenuation-corrected X-band dual-polarization (XPOL) radar measurements with estimates from a colocated S-band dual-polarization radar (S-Pol). The DSD retrieval technique uses reflectivity and differential reflectivity, and a constrained relationship to estimate the three parameters of a ldquonormalizedrdquo gamma distribution model. The more definitive S-Pol DSD parameter estimates are used as a reference to assess the performance of the corresponding XPOL estimates for different rain-path attenuation values. Results show that XPOL attenuation-corrected profiles can provide rainfall DSD estimations that are consistent to an S-band dual-polarization radar, even in cases of moderate to high rain-path attenuation. 相似文献

On the basis of the systematic variation and the appearance and disappearance of some metamorphic minerals in metapelitic assemblages, the metamorphic terrain of Leros can be divided into chlorite, biotite, garnet and staurolite-kyanite zones of progressive regional metamorphism. The matapelites are interbedded with blueschists containing magnesioriebeckite in Fe3+-rich mafic assemblages in the chlorite zone and more normal greenschist and amphibolite facies in higher grade zones. Combining the observed mineral assemblages in pelitic and mafic schists with the available experimental or calculated relevant phase equilibria, one can deduce temperature conditions of metamorphism ranging from about 350° C up to about 700° C and pressures ranging between a minimum value defined by the pressure of the triple point of the Al2SiO5 polymorphs and a possible minimum around 7 kb.The observed metamorphic sequence may be interpreted as the result of progressive transportation of the original sediments and the interbedded mafic rocks from a regime typified by low temperatures and relatively high pressures, to regimes characterized by higher temperature and medium pressures. 相似文献

Laser ablation multi-collector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) has become a valuable tool for the in situ measurement of the boron isotope composition of geological samples at high (tens to hundreds of μm) spatial resolution. That said, this application suffers from significant analytical challenges. We focus in this study on the underlying processes of two of the main causes for inaccuracies using this technique. We provide empirical evidence that not only Ca ions (Sadekov et al. 2019, Standish et al. 2019, Evans et al. 2021) but also Ar ions, that are reflected within the flight tube of the mass spectrometer, are the source for previously reported issues with spectral baselines. We also address the impact of plasma conditions on the instrumental mass fractionation as a source for matrix- and mass-load-related analytical biases. Comparing experimental data with the results of a dedicated release and diffusion model (RDM) we estimate that a close to complete (~ 97%) release of boron from the sample aerosol is needed to allow for consistently accurate LA boron isotope measurement results without the need for corrections. 相似文献

We reconstruct the Holocene shore displacement of the Västervik-Gamlebyviken area on the southeast coast of Sweden, characterised by a maritime cultural landscape and archaeological significance since the Mesolithic. Sediment cores were retrieved from four lake basins that have been raised above sea level due to the postglacial land uplift and eustatic sea level changes after the melting of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet. The cores were radiocarbon dated and analysed for loss on ignition and diatoms. The isolation thresholds of the basins were determined using LiDAR data. The results provide evidence for the initiation of the first Littorina Sea transgression in this area at 8.5 thousand calibrated years before present (cal. ka BP). A relative sea level rise by ∼7 m a.s.l. is recorded between 8.0 and 7.5 cal. ka BP with a highstand at ∼22 m a.s.l. between 7.5 and 6.2 cal. ka BP. These phases coincide with the second and third Littorina Sea transgressions, respectively, in the Blekinge area, southern Sweden and are consistent with the final deglaciation of North America. After 6.2 cal. ka BP, the relative sea level dropped below 22 m a.s.l., and remained at ∼20 m a.s.l. until 4.6 cal. ka BP coinciding with the fourth Littorina Sea transgression in Blekinge. From 4.6 to 4.2 cal. ka BP, the shore displacement shows a regression rate of 10 mm a−1 followed by a slowdown with a mean value of 4.6 mm a−1 until 1.6 cal. ka BP, when the relative sea level dropped below 3.3 m a.s.l. The Middle to Late Holocene highstand and other periods of minor sea level transgressions and/or higher salinity between 6.2 and 1.7 cal. ka BP are attributed to a combination of warmer climate and higher inflow of saline waters in the southern Baltic Sea due to stronger westerlies, caused by variations in the North Atlantic atmospheric patterns. 相似文献

The temporal and spatial variability of winter total cloud cover in southern Europe and the Mediterranean region and its connection to the synoptic-scale features of the general atmospheric circulation are examined for the period 1950–2005, by using the diagnostic and intrinsic NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data sets. At first, S-mode factor analysis is applied to the time series of winter cloud cover, revealing five factors that correspond to the main modes of inter-annual variability of cloudiness. The linkage between each of the five factors and the atmospheric circulation is examined by constructing the 500 hPa and 1,000 hPa geopotential height anomaly patterns that correspond to the highest/lowest factor scores. Then, k-means cluster analysis is applied to the factor scores time series, classifying the 56 years into six distinct clusters that describe the main modes of spatial distribution of cloudiness. Eventually, canonical correlation analysis is applied to the factor scores time series of: (1) 500 and 1,000 hPa geopotential heights over Europe and the North Atlantic Ocean and (2) total cloud cover over southern Europe and the Mediterranean, in order to define the main centers of action in the middle and the lower troposphere that control winter cloudiness variability in the various sub-regions of the area under study. Three statistically significant canonical pairs are revealed, defining the main modes of atmospheric circulation forcing on cloudiness variability. North Atlantic oscillation and European blocking activity modulate the highest percentage of cloudiness variability. A statistically significant negative trend of winter cloudiness is found for central and southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. The impact of sub-grid variability of precipitation and canopy water storage is investigated by applying a new canopy interception
scheme into the Community Atmosphere Model version 3 (CAM3) coupled with the Community Land Model version 3 (CLM3). Including
such sub-grid variability alters the partitioning of net radiation between sensible heat flux and latent heat flux on land
surface, which leads to changes in precipitation through various pathways/mechanisms. The areas with most substantial changes
are Amazonia and Central Africa where convective rain is dominant and vegetation is very dense. In these areas, precipitation
during December–January–February is increased by up to 2 mm/day. This increase is due to the enhanced large-scale circulation
and atmospheric instability caused by including the sub-grid variability. Cloud feedback plays an important role in modifying
the large-scale circulation and atmospheric instability. Turning off cloud feedback mitigates the changes in surface convergence
and boundary layer height caused by inclusion of sub-grid variability of precipitation and water storage canopy, which moderate

We use covariant techniques to study the non-linear evolution of self-gravitating, non-relativistic media. The formalism is first applied to imperfect fluids, aiming at the kinematic effects of viscosity, before extended to inhomogeneous magnetized environments. The non-linear electrodynamic formulae are derived and successively applied to electrically resistive and to highly conductive fluids. By nature, the covariant equations isolate the magnetic effects on the kinematics and the dynamics of the medium, combining mathematical transparency and physical clarity. Employing the Newtonian analogue of the relativistic 1 + 3 covariant treatment also facilitates the direct comparison with the earlier relativistic studies and helps to identify the differences in an unambiguous way. The purpose of this work is to set the framework and take a first step towards the detailed analytical study of complex non-linear systems, like non-relativistic astrophysical plasmas and collapsing protogalactic clouds. 相似文献

A thorough spatiotemporal analysis of the intense seismic activity that took place near the Aegean coast of NW Turkey during January–March 2017 was conducted, aiming to identify its causative relation to the regional seismotectonic properties. In this respect, absolute and relative locations are paired and a catalog consisting of 2485 events was compiled. Relative locations are determined with high accuracy using the double-difference technique and differential times both from phase pick data and from cross-correlation measurements. The spatial distribution of the relocated events revealed a south-dipping causative fault along with secondary and smaller antithetic segments. Spatially, the seismicity started at the westernmost part and migrated with time to the easternmost part of the activated area. Temporally, two distinctive periods are observed, namely an early period lasting 1 month and a second period which includes the largest events in the sequence. The investigation of the interevent time distribution revealed a triggering mechanism, whereas the ETAS parameters show a strong external force (μ?>?1), which might be attributed to the existence of the Tuzla geothermal field. 相似文献
