Precipitation: Measurement,remote sensing,climatology and modeling   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This review paper deals with four aspects of precipitation: measurement, remote sensing, climatology and modeling. The measurement of precipitation is summarized in terms of the instruments that count and measure drop sizes (defined as disdrometers) and the instruments that measure an average quantity proportional to the integrated volume of an ensemble of raindrops (these instruments are normally called rain gauges). Remote sensing of precipitation is accomplished with ground based radar and from satellite retrievals and these two approaches are separately discussed. The climatology of precipitation has evolved through the years from the traditional rain gauge data analyses to the more sophisticated data bases that result from a coalescence of data and information on precipitation that is available from several sources into amalgamated products. Recently, rain observations from both ground and space have been assimilated into regional and global numerical weather prediction models aiming at improved moisture analysis and better forecasts of extreme weather events. The current status and the main outstanding issues related to precipitation forecasting are discussed, providing a basic structure for research coordination aimed at the improvement of modeling, observation and data assimilation applicable to global and regional scales.  相似文献

A hybrid method for the vulnerability assessment of R/C and URM buildings   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:6  
The methodology followed by the Aristotle University (AUTh) team for the vulnerability assessment of reinforced concrete (R/C) and unreinforced masonry (URM) structures is presented. The paper focuses on the derivation of vulnerability (fragility) curves in terms of peak ground acceleration (PGA), as well as spectral displacement (s d), and also includes the estimation of capacity curves, for several R/C and URM building types. The vulnerability assessment methodology is based on the hybrid approach developed at AUTh, which combines statistical data with appropriately processed (utilising repair cost models) results from nonlinear dynamic or static analyses, that permit extrapolation of statistical data to PGA’s and/or spectral displacements for which no data are available. The statistical data used herein are from earthquake-damaged greek buildings. An extensive numerical study is carried out, wherein a large number of building types (representing most of the common typologies in S. Europe) are modelled and analysed. Vulnerability curves for several damage states are then derived using the aforementioned hybrid approach. These curves are subsequently used in combination with the mean spectrum of the Microzonation study of Thessaloniki as the basis for the derivation of new vulnerability curves involving spectral quantities. Pushover curves are derived for all building types, then reduced to standard capacity curves, and can easily be used together with the S d fragility curves as an alternative for developing seismic risk scenarios.  相似文献

S-wave spectral analysis is applied to 174 strong motion accelerationrecords to obtain the source parameters of 27 aftershocks(3.1 ML 4.3) of the May 13, 1995, Mw 6.6,Kozani-Grevena (NW Greece) earthquake. The data are derived from atemporary network, of three-component digital accelerographs, deployedwithin the strongly affected area some days after the mainshock occurrence.Site effects were evident in the strong motion records at 3 out of the 4stations used, and a correction was applied to account for theoverestimation of seismic moment due to amplification of thelow-frequency part of the spectrum. The data from this analysis arecomplimented with previously obtained source parameters for earthquakesin Greece, in order to study the applicability of the empirical scalingrelations used so far, towards smaller magnitudes. In general, a goodcorrelation was observed in most cases, validating the use of empiricalrelations that are applicable to the Aegean area. Empirical relations aredetermined between seismic moment and seismic slip, as well as, betweenseismic moment and stress drop, applicable to small magnitude earthquakes(ML < 4.3). Stress drop values were found to be relatively small,ranging from 2 to 41 bars, indicative of inter-plate environments. Thevalues of fc and of fmax were found in good agreement withrelations based on observations from larger worldwide earthquakes.  相似文献

This paper reviews current techniques on rainfall estimation from satellite sensor observations. The sensors considered in this study are the Precipitation Radar (PR) and radiometer (TMI) onboard TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Missio) satellite, the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) onboard Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) platforms, and infrared (IR) sensors onboard geostationary satellites. We present the physical basis and mathematical formulation of a newly developed combined radar-radiometer (PR/TMI) retrieval for TRMM and its application for overland rain estimation. Subsequently we discuss the current state-of-the-art in overland passive microwave (TMI and SSM/I) rain estimation techniques, and outstanding issues associated with the inverse problem. The significance of lightning information in advancing high-frequency rainfall estimation from passive microwave-calibrated IR retrieval techniques is discussed on the basis of newly developed techniques. Finally, current approaches are presented on merging the infrequent passive microwave-based rainfall estimates with the high-frequency, but lower accuracy, rainfall fields derived from proxy parameters (e.g., lightning and IR). The paper provides useful insights on satellite rainfall estimation and discusses issues and applications.  相似文献

We present an integrated study of subsurface and surficial karst landforms to unravel the uplift history of karst landscape in a tectonically-active area. To this end, we apply a multidisciplinary approach by combining cave geomorphology and Th/U dating of speleothems with remote sensing plus geophysical imaging of surface landforms. We use as an example Mt. Menikio in northern Greece where four caves share well-defined epiphreatic/shallow phreatic characteristics that are related to the distribution of surface and buried doline fields and provide evidence for three distinct water table stillstands (e.g. expressed as cave levels) now lying at ~130 m, ~800 m and ~1600 m a.m.s.l. Our dating constraints delimit the age of the lower water table stillstand prior to 77 ka ago and imply a maximum rate of relative base level drop of 0.45 mma-1, which is consistent with relative tectonic uplift rate estimates along currently active normal faults. We interpret the elevation of the higher water table stillstands to reflect earlier phases of uplift related to the regional tectonic events associated with the development of the North Anatolian Fault and the Northern Aegean area. Our analysis shows that the combined study of epiphreatic/shallow phreatic caves and surficial karst landforms together, is a robust way to investigate the uplift history of a karst landscape in a tectonically-active setting. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This letter presents the first assessment of a newly developed polarity retrieval scheme augmenting a very low frequency (VLF) long-range lightning detection network (named ZEUS). The polarity scheme uses extremely low frequency (ELF) in conjunction with the VLF waveform. The measured ELF signal is compared with the simulated ELF signal to extract the polarity sign. This comparison also produces correlation coefficients that are used to assign four confidence index categories on the polarity sign. This letter presents polarity results for a period of ZEUS network operation from November 26 to December 15, 2004. Assessment of the polarity measurements is conducted through comparisons against the Brazilian lightning network Rede Integrada Nacional de Detecccedilatildeo de Descargas Atmosfeacutericas (RINDAT) that uses a well-established lightning location technology. Contingency test analysis shows that algorithm performance is consistent with the assigned confidence level, e.g., at medium confidence level, the algorithm has a 5% bias, whereas at high level, perfect agreement is shown with RINDAT. A list of nearly 350 flares accompanied by type IV radio bursts by Krüger et al. (1971), which covers a period of 14 yr (1956–1969), was expanded to include all PCA and solar cosmic ray events during this entire period. This list, which includes practically all of the most energetic events during the maxima of two consecutive solar cycles, was used to investigate the latitudinal distribution of the above-mentioned flares, as well as of all PCA events, solar cosmic ray events and plage regions associated with them.Histograms of these occurences show clearly the appearance of two peaks in both solar maxima, which confirm the observations of Gnevyshev (1967). Latitudinal analysis of these histograms shows that in cycle 20 the two peaks are independent and their relative strength varies strongly with latitude. In cycle 19, however, this effect is not clearly evident, possibly because of the extremely high level of activity during this cycle. New evidence of statistically significant circulation changes in the lower stratosphere and in the middle and upper troposphere following Type IV Proton and Ground Level Events confirms some earlier findings of a relationship between solar activity and weather. The maximum 24-hr circulation changes appear to occur in the North Pacific-Alaskan area. A comparison between the effects that followed the flare sample used in this study with earlier results reported for less intense solar particle emission flare samples, implies that if these particles are responsible for triggering the atmospheric circulation in times of enhanced solar activity, their atmospheric effect is enhanced as we move to the more energetic solar proton events. The physical explanation of the results may possibly be found in numerical-experimental models. Some possible causes of the results are discussed.  相似文献
