Chemical and mineralogical compositions of granitic rocks of the French Massif Central enable us to classify them into two distinct groups: (i) leucogranites, (ii) granodiorites or quartz-monzonites, separated by a natural gap. The differences between these two groups are not only chemical and mineralogical, but are also reflected by: conditions of crystallization as deduced from compositions and from thermal metamorphism of xenoliths. nature of inclusions and, especially, the occurrence of basic fine-grained igneous xenoliths restricted to the granodiorite — quartz-monzonite group relations between intrusive and autochtonous migmatitic masses; levels of formation and of intrusion; the granodioritic and quartz-monzonitic magmas have originated at deeper horizons of the earth's crust than the leucogranitic one, but have risen higher. In our opinion these differences are linked, and the specific characteristics of the granodiorites and quartz-monzonites are related to the presence of basic igneous inclusions. These inclusions are relics of deep basic intrusions in the earth's crust, which have overheated the surrounding acid rocks beyond the minimum temperature of melting. Thus granodioritic or quartz-monzonitic melts were produced and were able to rise to superficial levels. These inclusions are missing in leucogranites. The compositions of the latter and their poor mobility suggest a wet anatectic origin in minimal PT conditions. 相似文献

In deltas, subsidence leads to a relative sea-level rise (RSLR) that is often much greater than eustatic rise alone. Because of high RSLR, deltaic wetlands will be affected early by an acceleration of eustatic sea-level rise. If there is sufficient vertical accretion, wetlands can continue to exist with RSLR; however, lack of sediment input eventually leads to excessive water logging and plant death. Areas with low tidal range, such as the Mediterranean and Gulf of Mexico, are especially vulnerable to rising water levels because the elevational growth range of coastal vegetation is related to tide range. Reduction of suspended sediments in rivers and prevention of wetland flooding by river dikes and impoundments have reduced sediment input to Mediterranean and Gulf of Mexico deltaic wetlands. This sediment deficit will become more important with an acceleration in sea-level rise from global warming. Most sediment input occurs during strong pulsing events such as river floods and storms, and management policies and decisions are especially designed to protect against such events. Management approaches must be reoriented to take advantage of pulsing events to nourish marsh surfaces with sediments. We hypothesize that deltas can be managed to withstand significant rates of sea-level rise by taking advantage of pulsing events leading to high sediment input, and that this type of management approach will enhance ecosystem functioning. 相似文献

Cenomanian paralic deposits of Charentes (southwestern France) have yielded abundant vertebrate microremains, including rather diversified continental taxa (e.g., frogs, turtles, crocodilians, dinosaurs, pterosaurs, lizards, and mammals). In this short report, the succession of faunal assemblages observed is briefly described in relation to palaeoenvironmental change resulting from the Cenomanian-early Turonian transgressive episode. Continental forms occur commonly in estuarine and shallow marine rocks of the lower part of the Cenomanian stage, but seem to be lacking in younger strata deposited in more open marine settings. Among an unexpected biodiversity, several non-marine groups (e.g., ziphodont crocodilians, carcharodontosaurid and troodontid dinosaurs, marsupial-like mammals) are recorded for the first time in the lower Upper Cretaceous of Europe, thus providing new palaeobiogeographical indications for this poorly documented part of the world. 相似文献

Levels of spatial segregation in Western European cities are persistent over space and time. To demonstrate the degree or appearance of spatial segregation, most studies on urban residential patterns still rely on fixed spatial units, aspatial measures and single scales. However, a spatial or temporal comparison of patterns and levels of segregation based on such units or metrics is not without problems. To that end, this paper takes an explicit geographic approach and considers individualized neighborhoods using EquiPop-software, allowing various scales. Using the k-nearest neighbors for all individuals increases international comparability and facilitates interpretation, so far often hampered in segregation research. This multiscalar, multigroup comparative approach on ethnic urban geographies – using Belgium as a case study – provides an empirical illustration of a valuable method and tool applicable in segregation research, thereby furthering the comprehension of the increasingly diverse urban geographies and building on emerging work in the US, Europe and beyond. 相似文献

Abrupt climatic oscillations around the North Atlantic have been identified recently in Greenland ice cores as well as in North Atlantic marine sediment cores. The good correlation between the Dansgaard-Oeschger events in the ice and the Heinrich events in the ocean suggests that climate, in the North Atlantic region, underwent several massive reorganizations in the last glacial period. A characteristic feature of these events seems to be their hierarchical structure. Every 7 to 10-thousand years, when the temperature is close to its minimum, the ice-sheet undergoes a massive iceberg discharge. This Heinrich event is then followed by an abrupt warming, then by several other oscillations, each one lasting between one and two thousand years. These secondary oscillations do not have a clear signature in marine sediments but constitute most of the Dansgaard-Oeschger events found in the ice. Here we use a simplified model coupling an ice-sheet and an ocean basin, in order to illustrate how the interactions between these two components can lead to such a hierarchical structure. The ice-sheet model exhibits internal oscillations composed of ice-sheet growing phases and basal ice melting phases that induce massive iceberg discharges. These massive fresh water inputs in the ocean stop for a moment the thermohaline circulation, enhancing the temperature contrast between low- and high-latitudes. Just after this event, the thermohaline circulation restarts and an abrupt warming of high-latitude regions is observed. For some parameter values, these warmer temperatures have in turn some influence on the ice-sheet, inducing secondary oscillations similar to those found in paleoclimatic records. Although the mechanism presented here may be too grossly simplified, it nevertheless underlines the potential importance of the coupling between ice-sheet dynamics and oceanic thermohaline circulation on the structure of the climatic records during the last glacial period. 相似文献

Most applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) make only use of the amplitude information in just one image. Interferometric SAR (InSAR) makes use mainly of the phase measurements in two or more SAR images of the same scene, acquired at two different moments and/or at two slightly different locations. By interference of the two images, very small slant-range changes of the same surface can be inferred. These slant-range changes can be related to topography and/or surface deformations. InSAR thus has the potential of mapping centimeter-scale ground displacements over a region many tens of kilometers in size at a resolution of a few meters making it one of the most promising space-geodetic techniques for monitoring Earth's surface deformations. The goal of this paper is to discuss some of the potential new applications of InSAR for the monitoring of deformations, and to show its major limitations. Some potential new applications of InSAR related to surface-change detection including earthquake and crustal studies, the monitoring of volcanoes and anthropogenic effects, and the monitoring of glaciers and ice sheets are presented. The discussion on the limitations of InSAR for surface-change detection focuses on atmospheric perturbations and the problem of temporal decorrelation. 相似文献

A new three-scale model to describe the coupling between electro-chemistry and hydrodynamics in non-swelling kaolinite clays
in steady-state conditions is proposed. The medium is characterized by three separate nano-micro and macroscopic length scales.
At the pore (micro)-scale the portrait of the clay consists of micro-pores saturated by an aqueous solution containing four
monovalent ions (Na+, H+, Cl−, OH−) and charged solid particles surrounded by thin electrical double layers. The movement of the ions is governed by the Nernst–Planck
equations and the influence of the double layers upon the hydrodynamics is modeled by a slip boundary condition in the tangential
velocity governed by the Stokes problem. To capture the correct form of the interface condition we invoke the nanoscopic modeling
of the thin electrical double layer based on Poisson–Boltzmann problem with varying surface charge density ruled by the protonation/deprotonation
reactions which occur at the surface of the particles. The two-scale nano/micro model is homogenized to the macroscale leading
to a precise derivation of effective governing equations. The macroscopic model is discretized by the finite volume method
and applied to numerically simulate desalination of a clay sample induced by an external electrical field generated by the
placement of electrodes. Numerical results indicate strong pH-dependence of the electrokinetics. 相似文献

Deep faunal assemblages were observed on cold seeps, between 1000 and 2000m depth, along the southern termination of the Barbados accretionary prism, during the Caracolante II and Diapicar cruises. Faunal composition and microdistribution of a cold seep community were analyzed at one site using deep-sea photographs and seismic (3.5 Kz) profiles. The community is dominated by large mussels up to 20cm long (possibly related to the genus Bathymodiolus), tiny vesicomyid clams, and vestimentiferan clusters in which animals are up to 2m long. There is a high density of sponges (three species), bryozoans and gorgonians. Other taxa occasionally associated with this assemblage include galatheid crabs, anemones, holothurians and possibly pennatulaceans which are numerous at boundaries of the site. A typical deep-sea fauna of fish, asteroids and ophiuroids is also scattered about the vicinity. This seep community is distributed as a band of discontinuous colonies, 40–50m in width and more than 10km in length. Living colonies alternate with accumulations shells and bare areas. The substratum is hard mud covered by a ferrugineous crust and cemented by carbonates. The early diagenetic character of the bottom and the occurrence of biological assemblages indicate that seepages of sulphur and/or methane, which have been revealed along the decollement zone of the Barbados prism, must diffuse through the sea floor. These biological and geological features are located on the crests of NE-SW anticlinal ridges and mud volcanoes which have been built by diaprism. 相似文献

Decompression experiments of a crystal-free rhyolitic liquid with ≈ 6.6 wt. % H2O were carried out at a pressure range from 250 MPa to 30–75 MPa in order to characterize effects of magma ascent rate and
temperature on bubble nucleation kinetics, especially on the bubble number density (BND, the number of bubbles produced per
unit volume of liquid). A first series of experiments at 800°C and fast decompression rates (10–90 MPa/s) produced huge BNDs
(≈ 2 × 1014 m−3 at 10 MPa/s ; ≈ 2 × 1015 m−3 at 90 MPa/s), comparable to those in natural silicic pumices from Plinian eruptions (1015–1016 m−3). A second series of experiments at 700°C and 1 MPa/s produced BNDs (≈ 9×1012 m−3) close to those observed at 800°C and 1 MPa/s (≈ 6 × 1012 m−3), showing that temperature has an insignificant effect on BNDs at a given decompression rate. Our study strengthens the theory
that the BNDs are good markers of the decompression rate of magmas in volcanic conduits, irrespective of temperature. Huge
number densities of small bubbles in natural silicic pumices from Plinian eruptions imply that a major nucleation event occurs
just below the fragmentation level, at which the decompression rate of ascending magmas is a maximum (≥ 1 MPa/s). 相似文献
