As a step towards resolving the genesis of inclusions in diamonds, a new technique is presented. This technique combines cathodoluminescence
(CL) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) using a focused ion beam–scanning electron microscope (FIB–SEM) instrument
with the aim of determining, in detail, the three-dimensional diamond zonation adjacent to a diamond inclusion. EBSD reveals
that mineral inclusions in a single diamond have similar crystallographic orientations to the host, within ±0.4°. The chromite
inclusions record a systematic change in Mg# and Cr# from core to the rim of the diamond that corresponds with a ~80°C decrease
of their formation temperature as established by zinc thermometry. A chromite inclusion, positioned adjacent to a boundary
between two major diamond growth zones, is multi-faceted with preferred octahedral and cubic faces. The chromite is surrounded
by a volume of non-luminescent diamond (CL halo) that partially obscures any diamond growth structures. The CL halo has apparent
crystallographic morphology with symmetrically oriented pointed features. The CL halo is enriched in ~200 ppm Cr and ~80 ppm
Fe and is interpreted to have a secondary origin as it overprints a major primary diamond growth structure. The diamond zonation
adjacent to the chromite is complex and records both syngenetic and protogenetic features based on current inclusion entrapment
models. In this specific case, a syngenetic origin is favoured with the complex form of the inclusion and growth layers indicating
changes of growth rates at the diamond–chromite interface. Combined EBSD and 3D-CL imaging appears an extremely useful tool
in resolving the ongoing discussion about the timing of inclusion growth and the significance of diamond inclusion studies. 相似文献

Major and trace element data for ultramafic and mafic metavolcanic rocks from the volcano-sedimentary belts at Holenarsipur and Shigegudda are presented. Although the Holenarsipur belt has been regarded as representing two stratigraphic groups separated widely in time — the Sargur (pre-3,4 Ga) and Dharwar (post-3,4 Ga) Groups — and Shigegudda is clearly younger than the 3.4 Ga gneisses, representative samples from all three suites are part of the same geochemical population. This comprises komatiitic to tholeiitic lavas which are genetically related by progressive fractional crystallization of olivine + pyroxene ± Cr-spinel. Some of the variability in the high-MgO rocks may reflect differential, partial melting of the mantle. There are two sub-populations, separable into light rare-earth-enriched and light rare-earth-depleted, which may reflect different depths of melting of compositionally homogeneous mantle. Many of the geochemical characteristics of the population bear a strong resemblance to modern basic volcanics formed in destructive plate margin environments. 相似文献

Nearshore benthic habitats of Biscayne Bay fit the prediction of communities at risk due to their location adjacent to a large metropolitan center (Miami) and being influenced by changes in hydrology through the activities of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). We examine whether the proposed programmatic expansion of mesohaline salinities through the introduction of additional fresh water would result in: (1) increases in seagrass cover; (2) expansion in the distribution and cover of Halodule; and (3) a reduction in the dominance of Thalassia, as hypothesized by CERP. Seagrasses were present at 98 % of sites where they covered 23 % of the bottom. Salinity was the only physical variable with a significant relationship to the occurrence of all SAV taxa. Occurrence of Thalassia, Halimeda, and Penicillus increased significantly with increasing salinity, but Halodule, Syringodium, Laurencia, Udotea, Batophora, Caulerpa, and Acetabularia showed a significant negative relationship with salinity. Mesohaline habitats had higher cover of seagrass and Halodule, and reduced dominance by Thalassia. Thus, we expect increases in the extent of mesohaline habitats to achieve the established CERP goals. We also examined the nutrient content of seagrass blades to evaluate whether: (1) nutrient availability is higher in areas close to canal discharges; and (2) tissue nutrient levels are related to seagrass abundance. The low abundance of Thalassia along the shoreline is not only due to its exclusion from low-salinity environments but also by higher nutrient availability that favors Halodule. Percent N and P, and N:P ratios in seagrass tissue suggest that Biscayne Bay receives high N inputs and is P-limited. Thus, increased P availability may facilitate an expansion of Halodule. The data presented suggest that increased mesohaline salinities will increase seagrass abundance and support co-dominance by Halodule and Thalassia as hypothesized, but raise concerns that current high N availability and increases in P may prompt a shift away from seagrass-dominated to algal-dominated communities under scenarios of enhanced fresh water inputs. 相似文献

We report here for the first time the occurrence of relics of majoritic garnet within orogenic garnet peridotites from Otrøy, Western Gneiss Region, Norway. The microstructural evidence consists of two-pyroxene exsolution from garnet. Majoritic garnets are only stable at depths greater than 150 km. Estimates of the initial composition of the majoritic garnets imply pressures of 6–6.5 GPa indicating that the Otrøy peridotites were derived from depths > 185 km.
Mineral-chemical data indicate that the present mineral compositions equilibrated at mantle conditions around 805 ± 40 °C and 3.2 ± 0.2 GPa.
Estimates of the initial pressure temperature (PT) conditions and PTtime ( t ) path are consistent with a multistage, multiorogenic exhumation history with upwelling of hot asthenosphere up to ≈ 100 km in the Pre-Cambrian followed by subsequent crustal emplacement and exhumation during the Caledonian orogeny. 相似文献

The Younger Dryas impact hypothesis suggests that multiple airbursts or extraterrestrial impacts occurring at the end of the Allerød interstadial resulted in the Younger Dryas cold period. So far, no reproducible, diagnostic evidence has, however, been reported. Quartz grains containing planar deformation features (known as shocked quartz grains), are considered a reliable indicator for the occurrence of an extraterrestrial impact when found in a geological setting. Although alleged shocked quartz grains have been reported at a possible Allerød‐Younger Dryas boundary layer in Venezuela, the identification of shocked quartz in this layer is ambiguous. To test whether shocked quartz is indeed present in the proposed impact layer, we investigated the quartz fraction of multiple Allerød‐Younger Dryas boundary layers from Europe and North America, where proposed impact markers have been reported. Grains were analyzed using a combination of light and electron microscopy techniques. All samples contained a variable amount of quartz grains with (sub)planar microstructures, often tectonic deformation lamellae. A total of one quartz grain containing planar deformation features was found in our samples. This shocked quartz grain comes from the Usselo palaeosol at Geldrop Aalsterhut, the Netherlands. Scanning electron microscopy cathodoluminescence imaging and transmission electron microscopy imaging, however, show that the planar deformation features in this grain are healed and thus likely to be older than the Allerød‐Younger Dryas boundary. We suggest that this grain was possibly eroded from an older crater or distal ejecta layer and later redeposited in the European sandbelt. The single shocked quartz grain at this moment thus cannot be used to support the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis. 相似文献

Upper mantle peridotite bodies at the earth's surface contain relict structures and microstructures which provide direct information on the role and the mechanisms of shear localisation in the upper mantle. Deformation which occurred at high temperatures (T>950±50°C) is relatively homogeneous within domains ranging in scale from a few kilometres to a few tens of kilometres. Below 950±50°C strain is localised into centimetre to several hundred metre wide shear zones which commonly contain hydrated mylonitic peridotites. The microstructures developed in the peridotites suggest there is a correlation between the occurrence of shear localisation and the occurrence of strain softening and brittle deformation processes. The most important strain softening processes are inferred to be structural and reaction induced softening. Structural softening processes include dynamic recrystallisation and strain-induced transitions from dislocation creep to some form of grain-size-sensitive (GSS) creep. Reaction induced softening is related to the formation of fine grained polyphase reaction products which deform by GSS creep and the formation of weak sheet silicates such as phlogopite, chlorite, talc and antigorite. From experimental studies these softening processes and brittle deformation processes are inferred to occur mainly at temperatures less than about 910±160°C. This temperature range is inferred to be a significant rheological transition in the upper mantle. Below 910±160°C deformation during orogenesis may be accommodated by an anastomosing network of hydrated mylonitic shear zones with a distinct, perhaps weak, rheology. At higher temperatures strain is accommodated in much wider deformation zones. On the scale of the lithosphere the degree of localisation may be different to that determined at the scale of the periodotite massif. An anastomosing network of hundred metre wide mylonitic shear zones forming 0.05–0.3 by volume fraction of the mantle lithosphere atT<950°C could accommodate inhomogeneous or homogeneous bulk deformation depending on the spatial distribution and ordering of the mylonite zones. The higher temperature deformation at deeper levels in the mantle could be markedly inhomogeneous being concentrated in shear zones with widths in the range of 2–20 km, alternatively these zones may widen significantly during deformation, resulting in a decrease in the degree of localisation with increasing bulk strain. 相似文献

A deformed composite peridotite-pyroxenite xenolith in Pliocene alkali basalts from the Pannonian Basin (Szentbékkálla, Bakony—Balaton Highland Volcanic Field) has been studied in detail. A narrow shear zone of intense deformation marked by porphyroclast elongation and recrystallization runs along the peridotite-pyroxenite contact. The xenolith contains a large volume of euhedral olivine neoblasts and tablet grains of olivine away from the shear zone interpreted as products of annealing and recrystallization in the presence of grain boundary fluid. Estimates of the time required for growth of recrystallized olivine grains suggest that the annealing took place in situ in the mantle and not during transport of the xenolith in the basalt magma. The grain boundary fluid present during recrystallization was a vapor rich silicate-melt different from the host basaltic melt that entrained the xenolith. This study demonstrates that high-stress deformation zones and associated fluid-assisted recrystallization, which are common features in kimberlite mantle xenoliths, also occur in some mantle xenoliths from alkali basalts. The suggested high-stress deformation zones in the mantle beneath the Pannonian Basin may be produced by paleoseismic events in the lithosphere associated with faulting related to the ascent of basalt magma.Editorial responsibility: J. Seventeen rocks from the Lewisian Gneiss of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, which represent three distinct lithological types at granulite to greenschist facies of metamorphism show rare-earth element patterns which seem not to have been disturbed by their complex metamorphic history. Some indication of their origin can be obtained by simple geochemical models.Three tonalitic pyroxene gneisses are characterized by: (1) light REE enrichment and heavy REE depletion; (2) low total REE contents; (3) moderate Eu enrichment. Their REE chemistry can be approximated by a model involving 10% partial melting of various garnet-bearing basaltic source materials. Alternatively, they may be some form of crystal cumulate, preserving their original anhydrous mineralogy, representing 30% crystallization of a parent tonalitic magma.Three tonalitic to granodioritic hornblende-biotite gneisses are characterized by: (1) light REE enrichment and heavy REE depletion; (2) significantly higher total REE contents than the pyroxene gneisses; (3) moderate Eu depletion. Their REE patterns can be approximated by a residual silicic melt in a model involving 30% fractional crystallization of solids with the modal mineralogy of the pyroxene gneisses or 40% removal of pure anorthosite from a parent dacitic magma. Two strongly metasomatised diopside-actinolite gneisses and one highly sheared epidote-chlorite gneiss have REE patterns which are not significantly different from the hornblende-biotite gneisses which were their precursors before metasomatism and late greenschist-facies shearing. This suggests that strong alteration has not enciphered the REE systematics of the gneisses.Basic gneisses of quartz tholeiite composition occurring as early dykes, which shared the same metamorphic history as the tonalitic to granodioritic gneisses, are characterised by: (1) slight enrichment in light REE relative to heavy REE; (2) variable total REE contents; (3) little difference between granulite and amphibolite facies types. Their REE patterns can be matched by models involving 5–15% partial melting of ultrabasic mantle with 3 times chondritic REE abundances, leaving a residue of olivine and orthopyroxene. 相似文献

The metamorphism and geochemistry of the major components of a small area of granulite facies rock are described and discussed, and a chemical model for the evolution of anomalous trace element distributions in such materials is suggested. The local complex was subjected to medium to high pressure granulite facies metamorphism between 2,900 and 2,600 m.y. All the analysed granulite facies rocks from Tiree; acid to intermediate gneisses, basic metamorphic rocks, and granitic rocks, have anomalous chemistries, being depleted in K, Rb, Nb, Y and Th, and have high K/Rb, Ba/Rb and Ca/Y ratios, and very low K/Ba and Rb/Sr ratios relative to normal portions of the upper continental crust. The gneisses seem to have been enriched in Ba and Sr.The chemical features of the rocks are considered to reflect their stable mineral assemblages in the granulite facies, and to be representative of deep-level crustal materials. The geochemical peculiarities of the complex may have been largely controlled by an upward intergranular diffusion, or “degassing” caused by high-grade metamorphism. It is suggested that such diffusion may have been active at the crust/upper mantle interface, some diffused material of mantle origin accounting for certain chemical oddities typical of Lewisian and some other Precambrian granulite facies rocks. 相似文献
