ABSTRACT

The southern coast of the Caspian Sea in northern Iran is bordered by a mountain range with forested catchments which are susceptible to droughts and floods. This paper examines possible changes to runoff patterns from one of these catchments in response to climate change scenarios. The HEC-HMS rainfall–runoff model was used with downscaled future rainfall and temperature data from 13 global circulation models, and meteorological and hydrometrical data from the Casilian (or “Kassilian”) Catchment. Annual and seasonal predictions of runoff change for three future emissions scenarios were obtained, which suggest significantly higher spring rainfall with increased risk of flooding and significantly lower summer rainfall leading to a higher probability of drought. Flash floods arising from extreme rainfall may become more frequent, occurring at any time of year. These findings indicate a need for strategic planning of water resource management and mitigation measures for increasing flood hazards.

Kaolin deposits of the Swat District in Pakistan are indicated to have derived by hydrothermal alteration of more feldspathic parts of felsic intrusives, which occur enclosed in orthoamphibolites and orthogneisses of the Cretaceous Kohistan Island Arc terrane. These latter “country rocks” formed under epidote–amphibolite conditions that prograde northwards to amphibolite facies, and locally manifest slight metamorphic differentiation. The felsic intrusives exhibit a general decrease in siliceous character from west to east, but are less siliceous than most hosts of world kaolins. They are composed of chemically allied quartz diorite, tonalite, trondhjemite and pegmatoids, which evolved mainly by an orthomagmatic crystal fractionation. These parental rocks are calc-alkaline in nature, and kaolinization has proceeded in Ca-richer environment. This is in variance with the occurrence of most known kaolin deposits over potassic granites or rhyolites. Ca-metasomatism of the “host rocks” is in evidence. Kaolin formation by a supergene process is not displayed.The raw kaolin with contained unaltered plagioclase is characterized by a rather low silica (46.54–50.93%) and potash (<1%), and high alumina (23.54–26.77%), Fe2O3 (1.73–5.45%) and lime (8.13–16.93%) content. Kaolinization proceeded with a decrease in SiO2 and concomitant increase in Al2O3. The same trend is followed with fineness of grain size of washed fractions, in resemblance to other known kaolin deposits of primary as well as secondary origin.  相似文献

Amphibolite layers of the Hamedan area (Sanandaj-Sirjan zone, west Iran) contain amphibole crystals with strong optical zoning. These amphibolites occur as interlayers in middle Jurassic, Buchan-type andalusite-garnet-staurolite and sillimanite-garnet-andalusite schist of the area that were intruded by late Jurassic magmatic bodies of the Alvand plutonic complex. Electron microprobe analyses results show that the zoned amphiboles have ferrohornblende cores that change to ferroedenite toward the rims. The core-to rim increase of Al, Fe, Na, and K and decrease of Si and Mg along with edenitic substitution in amphiboles is consistent with increase in metamorphic grade. Thermobarometry calculations based on amphibole composition and hornblende-plagioclase thermometry provided 492 to 508 o C and 4.3 to 4.9 kbar for the inner cores, 495 to 514 o C and 4.5 to 5.1 kbar for the outer cores, 538 to 564 o C and 5.3 to 5.8 kbar for the inner rims and 552 to 573 o C and 5.5 to 5.9 kbar for the outer rims, respectively. These results point to a nearly isobaric prograde P-T path for the Hamedan area amphibolites, compatible with a metamorphic evolution dominated by the thermal perturbation associated with the late Jurassic magmatism of the northern Sanandaj-Sirjan zone.  相似文献

The Gour Oumelalen area exposes Paleoproterozoic (1.9 Ga) marbles and calc-silicate granulites. Some marbles show a specific mineralogy characterized by the presence of a highly aluminous clinopyroxene with Al2O3 content exceeding16 wt%. This clinopyroxene shows a marked zoning with a hedenbergitic core rimmed by fassaite. Phase relations are expressed by spectacular reaction textures in calc-silicate granulites as Opx + Cpx + Pl + H2O  == > Grt + Qtz ± Am and Cpx + Ilm + Pl ± Mt = > Grt + Qtz + Spn. In olivine-bearing marbles, clinopyroxene and dolomite occur around olivine and calcite. According to thermodynamic modeling in the Na2O–CaO–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–Fe2O3 (NCFMASHTO) system, the first stage of metamorphism is located at 800 °C and 6–7 kbar, which is followed by an increase in pressure at 9–10 kbar and 800 °C and an isobaric cooling at 680 °C. The deduced anticlockwise P–T path is consistent with a granulitic metamorphism occurring in an active continental margin context.

Because of their sensitive structure, earth dams might face failure due to seepage phenomenon. In order to prevent such failure, some equipment like piezometers are installed in the body or foundation of earth dams. This study investigated the importance of piezometer installation level in dam body or foundation using mutual information–wavelet–Gaussian process regression. 27 Piezometers in three section along with reservoir level were employed to predict one-step-ahead seepage discharge of Zonouz earth dam. The daily data of 1 year of piezometer level and reservoir level were collected for this purpose. In order to find the best possible input combination, three groups of modeling scenarios were defined using piezometers and reservoir level time series. As some input combinations had more than two variables, decomposed time series were imposed into mutual information (MI) tool in order to decrement input variables and find the most correlated input–output features. Afterward, mentioned features were imposed into optimized Gaussian process regression (GPR) to be predicted. Different kernels were selected as core tool of GPR, but results demonstrated the capability of radial basis function (RBF) kernel. GPR–RBF structure were optimized using cross-validation technique. Results indicated that input combination including piezometer level and reservoir level of section II, especially piezometer 203 time series led to the best result among all scenarios.  相似文献

Two-dimensional, elastic, plane-strain, finite element model are generated to investigate the extensional structures mainly normal fault in the Annapurna region, central Himalaya. The numerical study was performed on the Miocene geologic profile considering both of the convergent displacement and rock layer properties in the regime. Results show that the normal fault primarily influenced by model geometry, rheology (layer properties) and boundary condition (applied convergence displacement). Simulated normal fault density exhibits very high intensity in Lesser Himalaya then in the Tethys Himalaya and low intensity in the Higher Himalaya, suggesting the vulnerability of fault development to low-grade metamorphic rock than the high-grade rocks. The location of normal fault predicted by the numerical model analysis is consistent to the position of normal fault segments by Kaneko (J Geol Soc Jpn 103(3):203–226, 1997). In this studies, it also believed that the presence of these normal faults and underthrusting of the sub-Himalayan sequence with associated tectonic forces, the Himalayan Metamorphic belt has been exhumed and differentially domal uplifted and then segmented into several blocks.  相似文献

This paper deals with the analysis of gravity anomaly and precise levelling in conjunction with GPS-Levelling data for the computation of a gravimetric geoid and an estimate of the height system bias parameter No for the vertical datum in Pakistan by means of least squares collocation technique. The long term objective is to obtain a regional geoid (or quasi-geoid) modeling using a combination of local data with a high degree and order Earth gravity model (EGM) and to determine a bias (if there is one) with respect to a global mean sea surface. An application of collocation with the optimal covariance parameters has facilitated to achieve gravimetric height anomalies in a global geocentric datum. Residual terrain modeling (RTM) technique has been used in combination with the EGM96 for the reduction and smoothing of the gravity data. A value for the bias parameter No has been estimated with reference to the local GPS-Levelling datum that appears to be 0.705 m with 0.07 m mean square error. The gravimetric height anomalies were compared with height anomalies obtained from GPS-Levelling stations using least square collocation with and without bias adjustment. The bias adjustment minimizes the difference between the gravimetric height anomalies with respect to residual GPS-Levelling data and the standard deviation of the differences drops from 35 cm to 2.6 cm. The results of this study suggest that No adjustment may be a good alternative for the fitting of the final gravimetric geoid as is generally done when using FFT methods.  相似文献

The Karak mudstone interbedded in an Eocene evaporite sequence, is dominated by R-1 ordered illite-smectite with a 20 to 30% expandable component. Minor phases include kaolinite, chlorite, illite/muscovite, plagioclase, potash feldspar, quartz, dolomite and pyrite. The present illite-smectite was probably originally smectite or highly expandable illite-smectite which underwent conversion to illite-smectite with a low expandable component in a comparatively low-temperature (ca. 100°C) closed-system sedimentary basinal diagenetic environment at a depth of ca. 5 km. Al3+ and K+ necessary for the conversion reaction were provided through the breakdown of potash feldspar. Burial under a 5 km thick pile of sediments produced some of the observed structures. Whole-rock chemistry presented here suggests that the mudstone formed by severe weathering of acidic source rocks. The influx of freshwater probably flushed out Ba, Rb, Ca and Mn from the restricted basin.  相似文献

In this paper maximum response of a single degree of freedom system resting on a flexible base is determined under consistent earthquakes and the results are presented as acceleration spectra including soil–structure interaction (SSI). Flexibility of base is modeled using frequency-dependent springs and dampers. The spring–damper coefficients are calculated for the desired natural mode of vibration of a multi-degree-of-freedom system. Consistency of earthquakes is maintained considering their magnitude, distance, local soil type, and return period. The latter parameter is accounted for by the use of earthquake categories identified by their similar spectral values. Ratio of spectral acceleration modification factors with SSI from this study to those calculated using the ASCE 7-10 procedure are determined for each case. Examination of the resulting curves shows that the mentioned code is conservative/non-conservative in estimation of spectral responses with SSI in certain cases for the lower/higher modes of vibration. The code’s procedure is modified using the developed curves for a conversion factor.  相似文献
