Soil and Soil Conservation surveys for watershed management were conducted using aerial photos of 1:60,000 scale in parts of North Cachar and Karbi-Anglong districts of Assam. The area was divided into different river catchments and sub-watersheds. The erosion, slope, landuse and soils in relation to physiogrphy were studied in each sub-watershed. The different physiographic units identified in the area were high, medium, low and very low hills; pediplains; alluvial plain and the valleys. These units were further subdivided based on slope, landuse and erosion etc. The soils were classified according to Soil Taxonomy. For priority determination, weightage was alloted to each of the sub-watersheds considering their physiography, slope, landuse, erosion,soil texture, depth and delivery ratio and sediment yield was calculated for each subwatershed. It has been found that out of 122875 ha, an area of 1745 ha had very high priority, 30590 ha high, 37290 ha medium, 51957 ha low and 1294 ha very low priority for soil conservation purposes. 相似文献

A composite xenolith of olivine-bearing garnet clinopyroxenite wall rock intruded by two spinels + garnet veins is described. Vein minerals exhibit textural evidence of a reaction relationship with the mineral phases in the wall rock. Wall rock clinopyroxene contains exsolved blebby garnet and very fine lamellar exsolution of orthopyroxene, indicating that this xenolith had undergone considerable subsolidus cooling. Garnet-clinopyroxene thermometry suggests that the xenolith last equilibrated in the mantle at a temperature of about 1,060 (ᆭ °C). The spinels in the veins are of two kinds: pleonaste (that occurs with vein garnet) and a high-Mg, high-Al titanomagnetite (MAT spinels). Intriguingly, the MAT spinels are chemically very similar to the spinels found as groundmass in kimberlites, are moderately subhedral to euhedral, have a weakly developed cumulate texture, and, at places, show a reaction relation with the pleonaste + garnet (cumulate?) assemblage in the vein. Based on petrographic, chemical, and phase equilibrium considerations, we propose the following evolutionary history of this composite xenolith. (1) In the first stage the olivine-bearing garnet clinopyroxenite formed as crystal extracts (cumulates) as a result of high pressure fractionation of an alkaline melt in the deepest levels of Hawaiian lithosphere/uppermost asthenosphere (100-110 km). (2) In the second stage, igneous veining (the melt composition of this vein is not precisely known but could be kimberlitic) occurs in the already existing wall rock resulting in the precipitation of pleonaste + garnet. A reaction relation between the igneous veins and the wall rock also characterizes this stage. (3) The last igneous episode in this xenolith is recorded by MAT spinels in the wall rock and their precipitation close to the previous pleonaste + garnet veins. The last igneous stage could well be due again to high pressure fractionation of a kimberlitic melt (the residual melt after precipitation of pleonaste + garnet). The time relationship between exsolution and the later igneous veining stages is not known. The MAT spinels are not a result of sub-solidus solvus processes as partial reaction (melt present) between the pleonaste + garnet (from the second igneous stage) and MAT spinel exists, pointing to the igneous nature of the MAT spinel. Based on striking similarity between the MAT spinels in our xenolith and those found as groundmass in kimberlites, we propose that the veining stages could well have been kimberlitic. Thus, even though kimberlitic melts are not seen on the Koolau shield, this particular xenolith clearly shows the existence of such melts at great depths beneath Hawaii. We also propose that the initial wall rock, which represents crystal extracts (even though it does not exhibit definitive cumulate texture) as a result of high-pressure fractionation of an alkaline melt and subsequent veining episodes, are of pre-Koolau age. The Planet Formation Imager (PFI, www.planetformationimager.org) is a next-generation infrared interferometer array with the primary goal of imaging the active phases of planet formation in nearby star forming regions. PFI will be sensitive to warm dust emission using mid-infrared capabilities made possible by precise fringe tracking in the near-infrared. An L/M band combiner will be especially sensitive to thermal emission from young exoplanets (and their disks) with a high spectral resolution mode to probe the kinematics of CO and H2O gas. In this paper, we give an overview of the main science goals of PFI, define a baseline PFI architecture that can achieve those goals, point at remaining technical challenges, and suggest activities today that will help make the Planet Formation Imager facility a reality. 相似文献

Environmental concerns regarding the potential for drinking water contamination in shallow aquifers have accompanied unconventional energy development in the northern Appalachian Basin. These activities have also raised several critical questions about the hydrogeological parameters that control the naturally occurring presence and migration of hydrocarbon gases in shallow aquifers within petroliferous basins. To interrogate these factors, we analyzed the noble gas, dissolved ion, and hydrocarbon gas (molecular and isotopic composition) geochemistry of 98 groundwater samples from south‐central New York. All samples were collected ?1km from unconventional drilling activities and sample locations were intentionally targeted based on their proximity to various types of documented fault systems. In agreement with studies from other petroliferous basins, our results show significant correlations between elevated levels of radiogenic [4He], thermogenic [CH4], and dissolved ions (e.g., Cl, Br, Sr, Ba). In combination, our data suggest that faults have facilitated the transport of exogenous hydrocarbon‐rich brines from Devonian source rocks into overlying Upper Devonian aquifer lithologies over geologic time. These data conflict with previous reports, which conclude that hydrodynamic focusing regulates the occurrence of methane and salt in shallow aquifers and leads to elevated levels of these species in restricted flow zones within valley bottoms. Instead, our data suggest that faults in Paleozoic rocks play a fundamental role in gas and brine transport from depth, regulate the distribution of their occurrence in shallow aquifers, and influence the geochemistry of shallow groundwater in this petroliferous basin. 相似文献

This study used gridded daily maximum temperature data (1°?×?1°) for 1951–2014 period to analyze the trend in monthly extreme warm days (ExWD) and changes in its probability distribution in each grid. It also analyzed the trend in spatial spread of annual ExWD over the study period at four exceedance levels and further related the number of ExWDs with cereal crop productivity of India. Extreme warm days have increased throughout India but were statistically significant in 42% grids. The increase was consistent over all the months in north-eastern region, southern plateau and both the coastal plains. It also increased significantly over north-western and central India during April to June summer period. The probability distribution of ExWD also changed significantly in many grids, especially in southern plateau and both the coastal plains. The changes indicated increased frequency in the existing levels of extremes and new occurrences of higher frequency of extremes. The analysis of land area affected by different levels of extremes indicated significant increase, with the rate being highest for higher extremes. In terms of extreme warm day temperatures, the study identified southern plateau, east and west coast plains, and north-eastern India as highly vulnerable. Using copula probability model, study showed that increase in ExWD from 20 to 60% may increase the probability of 5% or more yield loss from 17 to 53% for Kharif cereals, 11 to 43% for Rabi cereals and 19 to 63% for wheat crop. Accurate estimation of aquifer parameters, especially from crystalline hard rock area, assumes a special significance for management of groundwater resources. The aquifer parameters are usually estimated through pumping tests carried out on water wells. While it may be costly and time consuming for carrying out pumping tests at a number of sites, the application of geophysical methods in combination with hydro-geochemical information proves to be potential and cost effective to estimate aquifer parameters. Here a method to estimate aquifer parameters such as hydraulic conductivity, formation factor, porosity and transmissivity is presented by utilizing electrical conductivity values analysed via hydro-geochemical analysis of existing wells and the respective vertical electrical sounding (VES) points of Sindhudurg district, western Maharashtra, India. Further, prior to interpolating the distribution of aquifer parameters of the study area, variogram modelling was carried out using data driven techniques of kriging, automatic relevance determination based Bayesian neural networks (ARD-BNN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy neural networks (ANFIS). In total, four variogram model fitting techniques such as spherical, exponential, ARD-BNN and ANFIS were compared. According to the obtained results, the spherical variogram model in interpolating transmissivity, ARD-BNN variogram model in interpolating porosity, exponential variogram model in interpolating aquifer thickness and ANFIS variogram model in interpolating hydraulic conductivity outperformed rest of the variogram models. Accordingly, the accurate aquifer parameters maps of the study area were produced by using the best variogram model. The present results suggest that there are relatively high value of hydraulic conductivity, porosity and transmissivity at Parule, Mogarne, Kudal, and Zarap, which would be useful to characterize the aquifer system over western Maharashtra. 相似文献

Two lumped conceptual hydrological models, namely tank and NAM and a neural network model are applied to flood forecasting in two river basins in Thailand, the Wichianburi on the Pasak River and the Tha Wang Pha on the Nan River using the flood forecasting procedure developed in this study. The tank and NAM models were calibrated and verified and found to give similar results. The results were found to improve significantly by coupling stochastic and deterministic models (tank and NAM) for updating forecast output. The neural network (NN) model was compared with the tank and NAM models. The NN model does not require knowledge of catchment characteristics and internal hydrological processes. The training process or calibration is relatively simple and less time consuming compared with the extensive calibration effort required by the tank and NAM models. The NN model gives good forecasts based on available rainfall, evaporation and runoff data. The black‐box nature of the NN model and the need for selecting parameters based on trial and error or rule‐of‐thumb, however, characterizes its inherent weakness. A new analytical formulation of entrainment and detrainment in the Tiedtke's mass flux cumulus parameterization is presented

tested in GCM for long-term simulation and are evaluated in the light of the results from the original Tiedtke's scheme and
another mass flux scheme due to Emanuel. The variations of Indian monsoon rainfall have been examined with these schemes in
a general circulation model. Evaluation of the simulated rainfall against observations is done by empirical orthogonal function
(EOF) analysis for the Indian Monsoon region. It is noted that the spatial and temporal variations of the all-India monsoon
rainfall are sensitive to the formulation of entrainment and detrainment in a mass flux scheme, and that the new formulation

Magnetostratigraphic research, undertaken within the past 15 years in the Siwaliks distributed along 400 km of the Sub-Himalaya in central Nepal, has proved that the sediments possess highly reliable hematite-based primary detrital remanent magnetization suitable to determine depositional chronology. In order to bring out the polarity sequences in a common chronological frame, all available data are newly correlated to the latest global magnetic polarity time scale of Cande and Kent (S.C. Cande, D.V. Kent (1995) Revised calibration of the geomagnetic polarity timescale for the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic. Journal of Geophysical Research 100, 6093–6095). Chronological data presented are referred, in relation to the diverse lithological nomenclature, to the formations whose ages are not constrained by isotopic or paleontologic ages. The age of the sections dated by magnetostratigraphy ranges between 14 and <2 Ma. Sediment accumulation rates average to 32–50 cm kyr−1. Rock-magnetic parameters, e.g. initial susceptibility and isothermal remanent magnetization ratios, allow correlation with an accuracy of up to a few hundred meters among several kilometers thick adjacent sections. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data reveal a well-defined fabric contributed to by paramagnetic (k=10−5 to 3×10−4 SI) as well as ferromagnetic minerals (k=3×10−4 to 10−2 SI). AMS ellipsoids are mainly oblate along with some prolate ones and the degree of anisotropy is mostly low (P′<1.2). The magnetic fabric is of pre-folding origin with tilt-corrected sub-vertical magnetic foliation poles. The magnetic lineations do not show parallelism to the expected paleocurrent directions. Rather, sub-parallelism between the clusters of magnetic lineation and the fold axes/bedding strikes/thrust fronts is observed. A superimposed fabric consisting of a sedimentary-compactional and an overprint induced by a mild deformation process is suggested. The latter process was active during, and subsequent to, the deposition in the compressive tectonic setting of the foreland basin. The magnetic lineations for Tinau Khola and Surai Khola sections cluster around N80°W and N88°W respectively, whereas N27°W trend characterizes the Amiliya-Tui area south of Dang. The peak clusters in lineations are probably orthogonal to the true shortening axes. Their variation along the Sub-Himalaya, together with the fold axes or thrust front trends, may be used for accurate tectonic reconstruction. It is especially important when the orthogonality of the latter to the shortening axes may not hold true in the sectors with imbricate fold-and-thrust structures. 相似文献
